552.	RICHARD BEAUCHAUMP or DE BEAUCHOMP.
	Writ, after the death of Richard Beauchaump, who held by knight’s service of the heir of John de Beauchaump of Ryme, a minor in the king’s wardship, 24 June, 24 Edward III.
DEVON.	Inq. taken at Teghervy, Wednesday after St. Bartholomew, 24 Edward III.
	Teynghervy. John Beauchomp of Ryme, knight, lately deceased, father of John Beauchamp of Ryme, who held of the king in chief by knight’s service, held the manor of Teynghervy (extent given) of Nicholas Martyn by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee and gave it to Richard de Beauchomp for life. Afterwards John de Beauchomp, knight, died, and after him the said Richard de Beauchomp died, so that the manor descended to John de Beauchomp, as son and heir of John Beauchomp, knight. This John the son died, and then the manor descended to one Thomas de Beauchomp his brother and heir. The said Thomas is now in the king’s wardship. Richard de Beauchomp died on 3 May, 24 Edward III. The said Thomas, aged 2 1/2 years, is his heir.

553.	ELEANOR, LATE THE WIFE OF NICHOLAS DE CHEYNY or CHEYNE.
	Writ of amotus, 4 November, 24 Edward III.
HERTFORD.	Inq. taken at Coddreth, Saturday after St. Martin, 24 Edward III.
	Coddreth. 40s. rent held by way of dower after the death of Nicholas her husband, of the inheritance of Edmund son and heir of William de Cheyny, son and heir of the said Nicholas, which said rent, with other lands &c. which descended by inheritance to the said Edmund after the death of the said William, is held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 18 May, 23 Edward III. The aforesaid Edmund, aged 24 years and more, is her heir.

554.	ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE WELLES.

	Tottesmull in Westdeone. A messuage, 30a. land, 9a. meadow and two water-mills, whereof she was enfeoffed jointly with William her husband and his heirs, held of Joan, late the wife of Roger Lestraunge, and Laurence de Sancto Martino, lords of Westdeone, by service of a fifteenth part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 12 June, 24 Edward III. Henry de Welles, son of the said William and Alice, aged 18 years, is her heir.

BEDFORD.	Inq. taken at Wymynton, Thursday after St. Ambrose, 25 Edward III.
	[Wymynton.] A messuage with a dovecot, 248a. land, 1 1/2a. meadow in demesne and 11s. 3 1/4d. yearly rent in service held of the king in chief by serjeanty of finding a footman for seven days in the king’s army in conjunction with Sayer Harecourt of Wymynton, when there should be war in Normandy or Scotland, and by service of 20s. 8d. yearly for hidage, suit, ward, view and payment for beaupleader. He held nothing of others. He died on 21 June, 23 Edward III. Clemence his daughter, aged two years and more, is his heir.

556.	GEOFFREY LE ARCHER of Archerstoke.

GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Gloucester, Thursday after St. Luke, 24 Edward III.
	Archerstoke. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of finding for the king an archer (hominem sagittarium) in his war, at his own costs, for 40 days. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 8 October last. His daughter Joan, wife of Sir Thomas de Berkeley of Coburleye, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

557.	JOAN DE WYKE.
	Writ, 8 March, 24 Edward III.
SURREY.	Inq. taken at Wyke in the parish of Worplesdon, 28 March, 24 Edward III.
	Wyke in the parish of Worplesdon. A capital messuage, 100a. arable, dry, sandy and lying on the heath, 40s. rent of free tenants, 2a. meadow in a marsh often flooded, a wood called Highegrof, another wood of 20a. and woods called Lyghegrof and Garston, held for life of the heir of Hugh le Despenser, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. She died on 24 July last. The daughters of Peter de Wyke, son of the said Joan, are her heirs, viz. Katherine aged 14 years at St. Edmund the King next, Joan aged 12 years at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, and Christina, aged two years at St. Gregory next.

558.	MAUD, LATE THE WIFE OF BENET DE FULSHAM.

RUTLAND.	Inq. taken at Exton, 6 March, 24 Edward III.
	Exton. The manor, held for life of the inheritance of Agnes and Joan daughters and heirs of Bernard son of John de Bruys of Conyngton, because the jury say that John de Hothom, late bishop of Ely, gave the said manor to a certain Bernard son of Bernard de Bruys, and the said Maud, his wife, and the heirs of the said Bernard son of Bernard, and, because the said Bernard died without heir of his body, the right of the said manor descended to John de Bruys his brother and heir, and, after the said John’s death, the right descended to Bernard his son and heir, and after his death to Agnes and Joan, Bernard’s sisters and heirs. The manor is held of the king in chief as of the honour of Huntyngdon by service of half a knight’s fee. She died on Tuesday after the Conversion of St. Paul last. The jury know not at present who her heir is. The said Agnes is ten years old and the said Joan nine years.

559.	ROBERT DE RIBY.
	Writ, after the death of Robert de Riby, who held by knight’s service of Henry son and heir of John de Bello Monte, a minor in the king’s wardship, 25 October, 24 Edward III.
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Folkyngham, Monday after the octave of St. Mary, 25 Edward III.
	Hekyngton. A capital messuage, a toft and three crofts, eight bovates of arable, 30a. meadow and a marsh held of the said heir, of the fees of Gaunt belonging to the manor of Folkyngham, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. He died on Sunday after St. Mary Magdalene, 23 Edward III. Joan daughter of John de Riby, begotten in lawful marriage between him and Amabel his wife, daughter of William Durny, is kinswoman and heir of Robert de Riby, and is ten years of age.

560.	RALPH DE BEREWYK or BERWIK.
	Writ, 25 April, 24 Edward III.
LANCASTER.	Inq. taken at Warton on the octave of the Assumption, 24 Edward III.
	Berwik. The said Ralph in his lifetime gave the manor of Berwik to Henry de Gristhwayt, chaplain, John son of Henry de Carleton, and Robert son of Richard de Berwik. Robert son of Richard immediately died, and Henry and John enfeoffed John, son of the said Ralph de Berewik, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to Thomas, brother of the said John, and the heirs of his body, Margaret, sister of the said Thomas, and the heirs of her body, and the right heirs of the said Ralph de Berwik. The said John son of Ralph, Thomas and Margaret survive. The manor is held of the king, as of the lands late of William de Coucy, which are in the king’s hand, by service of 6d. yearly and by suit at the court of Mourholm every three weeks. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on the feast of St. Bartholomew last. John his son, aged ten years, is his heir.

561.	RALPH FITZ OURS, knight.

SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Wylyton, Wednesday after the Exaltation of the Cross, 24 Edward III.
	Wylyton. The manor, with the borough of Wechet, held for a term in fee tail, jointly with Maud his wife, who survives, of the gift of Robert fuiz Ours, parson of the church of Baudrip, to them and the heirs of the body of the said Ralph, of the heir of the earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. Brumpton Rauf. The manor, held jointly, as above, of the gift of William Cras and Gilbert de Chilton by fine levied in the king’s court, to the said Ralph and Maud and the heirs of their bodies, of Simon Meriet by knight’s service. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick. He died on Monday after St. Blaise last. His daughters, Hawise aged 20 years and more, married to Hugh de Durburgh, and Joan, aged 16 years and more, are his heirs.

SUFFOLK.	Inq. taken at Cleydon, 22 March, 25 Edward III.
	Cleydon with Thurliston. The manor held of John de Mortuo Mari, as of his manor of Oteleye, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee and 5s. ‘Wardefee.’ (Unspecified.) A rent called ‘le Skarviston Rente’ is held of William de Beuchaump as of his manor of Bludhall, service not known. Beylham, Little Blakenham and Great Blakenham. 26s. rent held in socage of Oliver de Boun, knight, as of his manor of Coldenorton, co. Essex, service not known. Pharnham. The manor, held of Edward de Monte Acuto as of his manor of Pesenhal by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Orfford. The manor, held in socage of the heirs of Richard Sturmyn and the prior of Ely, service not known. Westilton. The manor, held of Robert de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 8 July, 7(?) Edward III. Eleanor his daughter, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

563.	RICHARD, SON OF HUGH DE LUTRYNGTON.
	Writ, after the death of the said Richard, who held of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, 8 May, 24 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken in the castle of Northampton, Friday after Holy Trinity, 24 Edward III.
	Hakelynton, Horton, Pydyngton [Pytyngton in Exchequer Inquisition] and Quenton. The said Hugh was seised of divers lands, tenements, rents, customs and services, all which he gave to John de Halughton, chaplain, who afterwards enfeoffed thereof the said Hugh and Joan his wife and Richard their son and the heirs male of the body of the said Richard, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Hugh. Joan and Richard died in the lifetime of the said Hugh without heir male of the body of Richard. Hugh, long before his death, demised all the aforesaid lands &c. to the said John de Halughton and Richard de Lotrynton, brother of the said Hugh, for their lives in survivorship. The said Richard is dead and the said John survives. Richard son of Hugh died a year ago, and Katherine daughter of the said Hugh and sister of the said Richard, aged three years, is his heir.

Joan, his daughter, wife of Ralph de Tudyrleye, of full age, and William, son of William Banastre and Elizabeth, his wife, who was the other heir of the said Philip, aged three years, are his heirs.

565.	ELLEN, LATE THE WIFE OF ARTHUR DE MARKESHALE.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Branketre, Thursday in Whitsun week, 24 Edward III.
	Markeshale. The manor (extent given) held in fee tail of the king in chief, as of the honour of Hagenet, by service of a knight’s fee and 10s. yearly to the ward of Dover castle, to her and Arthur, sometime her husband, long since deceased, and the heirs of their bodies. The extent includes a leet held on Tuesday in Whitsun week, which is worth nothing beyond the common fine of 12d. which the bailiff of the honour of Haule receives. She held no other lands &c. on the day of her death. She died on 15 April last. John son of the said Arthur and Ellen, aged 9 years and more, is her heir. Endorsed:—“To William de Russhebrok and John de Walsyngham, for five marks, and for the marriage 10l.”

566.	ROBERT BUSTARD.
	Writ, 3 February, 24 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at York, Monday the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 24 Edward III.
	Bisshopthorp. A third part of 14 tofts and 15 bovates of land held of the king in chief by fealty and by service of rendering 17s. 6 1/2d. and a third part of a halfpenny yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of York. Maud, late the wife of John Bustard, mother of the said Robert, holds two parts of the said tofts and land for her life by charter and licence of King Edward II. The aforesaid third part of the 14 tofts is in the hands of tenants at will, who render yearly 16s., and the third part of the said 15 bovates of land is in the hands of like tenants, who render yearly 17s. 4d. Middelthorp. A third part of a messuage and four bovates of land held of the abbot of Whiteby by service of 6s. 8d. yearly, in the hands of tenants at will, who render yearly 2s. 2 1/2d. beyond the 6s. 8d. Bustardthorp. A third part of a messuage and of a carucate of land held of Ralph de Leeke and John de Withornsee by service of 2s. 4d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the county in demesne or service. He died on 19 August last. Richard son of John de Friston, son of Joan Bustard, sister of the said Robert, aged 6 1/2 years and more, is his heir.

The manor (extent given) held of John, earl of Kent, service not specified. Roudiches by Derby, viz. 100a. arable, 4a. meadow held of Thomas Tochet by service of 3s. yearly. Walton. Two water-mills and a windmill. He died on Saturday after St. John before the Latin Gate, 24 Edward III. Isabel his daughter, wife of Sir John de Lowdam, knight, aged 26 years, is his heir.

568.	JOHN LELY.
	Writ of amotus, 20 April, 24 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Selby, Sunday before the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 24 Edward III.
	Carleton in Balne. Two tofts, 2 bovates of land and 55a. flooded most years by the river Ayre and 1a. meadow held of the king in chief as parcel of the manor of Carleton by homage and by service of a thirty-fourth part of a knight’s fee by the king’s charter of licence dated 9 July, 16 Edward III. The whole manor is held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee. Before the time of the said charter the deceased held the premises of Nicholas de Stapelton, then lord of the manor of Carleton, one of the heirs of Peter de Bruys the Third. The said Peter, ancestor of Nicholas, who held the manor in chief of King Henry III, gave the aforesaid tenements to Thomas de Usthwayt, Mareschal, and Henry son of John son of Herbert, to hold of the said Peter and his heirs, rendering yearly 3s. 5d. and 1lb. pepper, although the premises had then been parcel of the manor, and were held of King Henry III. The deceased afterwards acquired the aforesaid tenements in fee of divers feoffors, who had them by inheritance and purchase of the heirs of the said Thomas de Husthwayt and Henry son of John. Carleton. 44a. land held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of the said John, of Sir Miles de Stapelton by fealty and by service of rendering 14s. 7d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the county in demesne or in service. He died on Thursday before Whit Sunday, 23 Edward III. John Lely, his son, aged 28 years and more, is his heir.

569.	THOMAS GILES.
	Writ to Walter Turk, mayor of the city of London, 5 July, 24 Edward III.
LONDON.	Inq. Monday after the translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 24 Edward III.
	Parish of St. Bride in the suburb. Three tenements held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London; two of which descended to the said Thomas by inheritance after the death of John Giles his father, and the third the said Thomas acquired of John de Flete, son of Ralph le Cotiller. From the deceased the right of the said tenements descends to Thomas his son and heir, who survived his father by fifteen days. From this son the right resorted (resortebatur) to one Walter, as kinsman and heir, brother of John Giles the father. From the said Walter the right descends to Walter his son and heir; from him to Walter his son and heir, who entered upon the said tenements after the death of Thomas son of Thomas and gave them by charter to one Walter de Wodelond, knight. The latter gave them by charter to John de Ware, chaplain, minor canon of St. Paul’s, London, who is now seised thereof. He held no other lands &c. within the liberty of the city of London. He died on Tuesday before Palm Sunday, 23 Edward III. The aforesaid Walter, son of Walter, son of Walter, aged 23 years and more, is the heir of the aforesaid Thomas son of Thomas Giles.
