529.	RICHARD DE AMOUNDEVILE, knight.
	Writ, after the death of the said Richard, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Ralph son of Ralph son of Ralph Basset of Drayton, a minor in the king’s wardship, [6] June, 24 Edward III.
DORSET.	Inq. taken at Dorchester, Monday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 24 Edward III.
	Upmelecombe. Ralph Basset of Drayton, grandfather of the Ralph now a minor in the king’s wardship, who held the manor of the earl of Warwick, gave it to Richard de Amondeville, father of the deceased, and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the said Ralph and his heirs by service of 10l. yearly; and so the deceased held the manor as heir of the aforesaid Richard, of the heir of Ralph son of Ralph son of the aforesaid Ralph Basset of Drayton. The manor should revert to this heir because the deceased died without heir male of his body. The rent of 10l. was assigned in dower to Alesia, late the wife of Ralph Basset, father of the said heir, now married to Hugh de Menyl, and so the said manor is worth nothing to the guardian or heir during her life. The jury know not on what day he died because he did not die within the county.

530.	ELEANOR, LATE THE WIFE OF RALPH DE WYLYNGTON.

BERKS.	Inq. taken at Wanetyng, 20 June, 24 Edward III.
	Stalput. The manor (extent given) held for her life of the gift of Walter de Langeleye and Richard Cros, who enfeoffed the said Ralph and Eleanor thereof jointly, to hold to them and the heirs of Ralph, with remainder to Henry de Wylyngton and his heirs. The said manor, with a quarter of the hundred of Shryvenham, is held of the countess Warenne, lady of the manor of Olde[bou]rn by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 20 July, 23 Edward III. John son of Henry de Wylyngton, aged seven years and more, is her heir.

531.	WILLIAM BIKERNOLL.
	Writ, after the death of William Bikernoll, who held by knight’s service of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, late a minor in the king’s wardship, 7 October, 24 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Pokelyngton, 18 October, 24 Edward III.
	Medelburn. Two tofts and three bovates of land held by the law of England of the inheritance of Alice his wife, sometime deceased, of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, time out of mind by fealty and by service of rendering yearly 26s. 8d. and 2lbs. cummin, and not by knight’s service. The said rent is parcel of the manor of Storthwayt, the whole of which manor is assigned among other lands to Margery, late the wife of the said William de Roos, in dower. From the time of the assignment she had, and still has, the said rent. The premises do not suffice to pay the said rent. Lathum. Tenements (unspecified) worth 13s. 4d. yearly, held as above of John de la Haye by fealty and by service of 1d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 24 August, 23 Edward III. Hugh Bikernoll, son of the said William and Alice, aged 40 years and more, is their heir.

532.	JOAN AND ELIZABETH, DAUGHTERS AND HEIRS OF NICHOLAS LE WALSSH.
	Writ, after the deaths of the said Joan and Elizabeth, who died while minors in the king’s wardship. 26 November, 24 Edward III.
SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Somerton, Monday after St. Matthias, 26 Edward III.
	By reason of their dying without heirs of their bodies, there came to the king’s hand:— Athelardeston. 26s. 8d. yearly rent in Athelardeston, which Nicholas their father held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Hywysshchamfloure. A moiety of certain lands &c. which the said Nicholas held of Robert de Novo Burgo by knight’s service. Joan died on 10 August, 24 Edward III, at even (hora vespertina), and Elizabeth on the same day about the first hour (circa horam primam). Simon, son of Maud, a sister of the said Nicholas, now deceased, aged 19 years, Alice, another sister of the said Nicholas, aged 30 years, married to Walter Malet, Joan third sister of the said Nicholas, aged 26 years, John, son of Elizabeth, one of the daughters of Edith, fourth sister of the said Nicholas, now deceased, aged 7 years, and Joan, another of the daughters of the said Edith, aged 18 years, married to William le Swon, Lucy, third daughter of the said Edith, aged 14 years, married to John Chriket, and Christina, fourth daughter of the said Edith, aged 12 years, married to John atte Hulle, are living and of them there is not as yet any offspring, and they are the heirs of the said Joan and Elizabeth.
DORSET.	Inq. taken at Cerne, Thursday after St. Matthias, 26 Edward III.
	By reason of the death of the said Joan and Elizabeth, there came to the king’s hand:— Podyton. A messuage, a curtilage, 60a. arable and 4a. meadow and 3s. 4d. rent held of Nicholas de Poynz as of his manor of Sutton Poynz by knight’s service. Westchykerel. A messuage, 27a. land, 2a. meadow, 3a. pasture and 2s. rent held of the lord of Wynterbournheryng by knight’s service. Date of death and heirs as above.

533.	JOHN LE FORESTER or LE FORSTER.

SALOP.	Inq. taken at Welynton, 10 January, 24 Edward III.
	Welynton. A messuage and a nook (nocatam) of land held of the king in chief by a moiety of the service of being forester (per servitium custodiendi medietatem forestarie) of the hay of la Wrekene; and a plot of land held of the king in chief by service of rendering 2s. yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Salop. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 10 September last. William le Forster, his brother, aged 24 years on the Gule of August last, is his heir.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Burtonstather, Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 24 Edward III.
	Salcliff. The manor, often inundated, held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. Flixburgh. 40a. land held of the heirs of Norman Darcy by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee and by service of 1lb. cummin and 3s. 1d. yearly. (fn. 1) The said heirs of Norman de Swynford (sic) hold them of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. (fn. 1) He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Tuesday in Easter week last. Robert de Insula, his son, aged 50 years and more, is his heir.

	Hempstede. The manor, with the market of Holte [added in the enrolment], held for life, of the inheritance of William Caly, of Thomas Bacoun by service of 12d. yearly. He died on Friday after SS. Peter and Paul last. William Caly, his kinsman, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

536.	JOHN BERNAK.
	Writ, after the death of John Bernak, who held by knight’s service of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, a minor in the king’s wardship, 20 February, 24 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Northdalton, Saturday after the Ascension, 24 Edward III.
	Northdalton. A moiety of a capital messuage, 6 bovates in demesne, a moiety of a windmill, unoccupied through the pestilence, 2 messuages and 4 bovates in the hands of tenants and 3 messuages and 4 bovates now let after being untenanted for some time, held of the above heir by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and by homage. He held no other lands &c. in the county in demesne or in service. He died on 19 July last. William Bernak, his son, aged 28 years and more, is his heir.

537.	BARTHOLOMEW DE INSULA.
	Writ. Whereas it was found by an inquisition made by the then escheator in the Isle of Wight that the said Bartholomew held no lands &c. there of the king in chief, but that he held, jointly with Elizabeth his wife, then surviving, divers lands &c. of the king in chief by divers services and that his heir is a minor; now the king understands that the said Bartholomew held of the king in chief by knight’s service divers other lands &c. there, of which no mention is made in the said inquisition, whereby the wardship of the same lands &c. and the marriage of the heir ought of right to be the king’s. The escheator is to inquire thereinto and as to who has been in possession since the death of the said Bartholomew. 10 June, 24 Edward III.
SOUTHAMPTON; ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Neuport, Tuesday, 22 June, 24 Edward III.
	Holeweye in the township of Wroxhale. Five messuages and 40a. land held of the king in chief by knight’s service as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrok. Five bondmen of the said Bartholomew hold the same in bondage and no mention was made thereof in the inquisition above referred to. The aforesaid Elizabeth has been in possession since the said Bartholomew’s death with no title save reasonable dower.

SUFFOLK.	Stanton. A messuage, 52a. land, 1/2a. meadow held of the abbot of St. Edmund’s in free socage by service of 3s. 4d. yearly. She died on 16 August last. Thomas her son, aged 14 years and more, is her heir.

539.	LORA, LATE THE WIFE OF RICHARD DE BEYVYLL.
	Writ, after the death of the said Lora, who held by knight’s service of John son and heir of Edmund, late earl of Kent, a minor in the king’s wardship, 16 September, 24 Edward III.
WARWICK.	Inq. taken at Coventre, 7 October, 24 Edward III.
	She held no lands in demesne as of fee of the said heir or of any other in the county, but she held jointly with Richard her husband, deceased:— Wappenbury. A capital messuage &c., 60a. arable, 4a. meadow and a wood and 3 messuages, 3 cottages and 20a. land in the common fields without tenants through the late pestilence. Esenhull. 100s. rent. All held of the said heir by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. She died on 2 September last. Robert de Beyvyll, son of the said Richard and Lora, aged five years and more at St. Peter’s Chains last, is their heir. Endorsed:—The within-written lands and tenements are leased to William de Pook’ for ten marks yearly.

CUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Penereth, 10 January, 24 Edward III.
	Hoton in the Forest. Three messuages and 20a. land held jointly with the said Ralph, now deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies of the king in chief by service of 3s. 4d. yearly payable at Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff of Cumberland. Gaytschales. Two acres of land held in the same manner of the king in chief, as of arrented purpresture in the forest of Ingelwode, by service of 10d. yearly payable as above. Burgh on the Sands. Three acres of land held in the same manner of Margaret de Dacre by service of 6d. yearly. Thurstanfeld. 60a. land held in the same manner of Robert de Burgh by service of 18s. yearly; and 14a. land held in the same manner of Robert de Bampton by service of 8s. yearly. She held no other lands &c. in demesne or service in the county. She died on 18 September, 23 Edward III. William son of the said Ralph and Elizabeth, of full age, is her heir. He is decrepit and not competent to labour through weakness of body and limbs.

	Writ to John Waleys, escheator in co. Derby, 24 November, 24 Edward III. Annexed is the following:—
DERBY.	Inq. taken at le Castelton before Henry de la Pole, escheator and keeper of the fees of Philippa, queen of England, of the High Peak, Wednesday, the feast of St. Hilary, 23 Edward III.
	Hugh de Stredleye held at the time of his death:— Brough (de Burgo). The mill held of the king in chief by homage and fealty and by service of finding a man to carry a heroner (falconem heronium) every year in season before the king, when forewarned by the king, receiving for the said service, at the king’s expense, every year two robes, and, if his horse shall die in the said service, the king shall restore him the price of the horse or a horse of that price. Haselbache. The manor held of Robert de Strelley by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
NOTTINGHAM.	(Unspecified.) A plot of pasture held of the lord of Henouer by service of a pair of spurs yearly.
DERBY.	Adlastre. Two bovates of land held of the lord of Marketon by service of 16d. yearly; two bovates of land held of the abbot of Derley by service of 18d. yearly; two bovates of land held of Richard son of Richard de Adlastre by service of 6d. yearly. He died on Monday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III. William his son, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

542.	ROBERT DE YOULTON or DE YOLTON.
	Writ, after the death of the said Robert, who held by knight’s service of William son and heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, a minor in the king’s wardship, 1 September, 24 Edward III.

	Yolton. A messuage, three tofts and four bovates of land in demesne with the service of two tofts and four bovates of land held in fee by free tenants, and the service of a bovate of land, held time out of mind by the prioress of Thikheved in frank almoin, all held of the aforesaid heir by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee and by homage. Two bovates of land held of the chapter of St. Peter’s, York, by fealty and by service of 6d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 8 August, 23 Edward III. Robert de Yolton his son, aged 32 years and more, is his heir.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Maldon, Monday after St. Denis, 24 Edward III.
	Lachyngdon. 50a. land, 30a. marsh and 2a. pasture held of the king in chief as of the honour of Hagenet by service of rendering 10s. yearly to the ward of the castle of Dover; a messuage and 60a. arable held of the prior and convent of Christ Church, Canterbury, by service of 8s., one ploughshare, price 6d., and one bederep yearly and by suit of the said prior and convent’s court at their manor of Lallyng every three weeks; seven acres of enclosed marsh held of the abbess of Berkyngge by service of 1/2d. yearly. All these lands &c. are charged to pay Richard de Haveryng, knight, a yearly rent of 4l., for which cause no man will venture to depasture on the said lands for fear of distraint, the rent of the said Richard for the aforesaid year being in arrear. He held no other lands &c. of the king. Coppeford, Great Bryche and Little Bryche. A messuage, 72a. arable, 5a. pasture and 2a. wood held of Robert de Teye and of divers other lords by divers services not known to the jury. 25a. arable held of John Gernoun, knight, service not known, descended by hereditary right to John son and heir of the deceased, after the death of Hugh Sayer, whose heir the said John the son is. The said Hugh died on 18 June, 23 Edward III. John Sayer died on 24 May, 23 Edward III. John Sayer, his son, aged three years and more, is his heir.

	Hocclyve. A toft, 68a. land, 6a. 1r. meadow, services and customs of three customary tenants each holding half a virgate of land and of one holding a quarter of a virgate held of lady Isabel Botourte by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. Date of death and heir not known.

545.	AGNES, LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE WYVILL.
	Writ, after the death of the said Agnes, who held by knight’s service of the heir of William de Ros of Hamelak, a minor in the king’s wardship, 20 April, 24 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Sledmere, Monday after St. James, 24 Edward III.
	Sledmere. Ten bovates of land held for life, jointly with William de Wyvill, her husband, deceased, of the aforesaid heir by homage and by service of an eighteenth part of a knight’s fee, with remainder to Ralph de Hastynges, knight, who survives, and his heirs. Five bovates of the said land are in the hands of tenants at will and they render for the same 20s. yearly. The other five lie waste for want of tenants and because of the pestilence. Thirty bovates of land, of which 20 are in the hands of tenants at will, who render 4l. yearly, and the remainder lying waste, held for life as above, with remainder as above, of Sir John de Moubray by knight’s service, with remainder to the aforesaid Ralph and his heirs. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 20 August last. The reversion of the premises belongs to the aforesaid Ralph, who is 28 years of age and more. William de Wyvill, son of William and Agnes, aged 30 years, is their heir in blood, but no inheritance descends to him by the death of Agnes.

546.	NICHOLAS DEVENISSH or LE DEVENISSCH of Winchester.
	Writ, 18 October, 24 Edward III.
DORSET.	Inq. taken at Dorchestre, Thursday after St. Nicholas, 24 Edward III.
	Westchelburghe. The manor and the advowson of the church, held for life jointly with Edith his wife, who survives, of John de Mohun of Donsterre by knight’s service, of the gift of William de Fyfhyde and John de Alvyngton by fine levied in the king’s court. The said manor and advowson after the death of the said Nicholas and Edith should by the said fine remain to John de Edyndon and Agnes, daughter of the said Nicholas, and the heirs of the bodies of the said John and Agnes. He died on Friday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary last. Heir not known because he had none known in the county.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Winchester, Monday the morrow of SS. Philip and James, 25 Edward III.
	Westbury and Empnesworth. The manors, held jointly with Edith his wife of the gift of William de Fyfhide and John de Alvynton, to them for their lives, with remainder to Thomas, son of the said Nicholas, and Maud his wife and the heirs of the body of the said Thomas, by a fine levied at Westminster in the quinzaine of St. Martin, 16 Edward III. The manor of Westbury is held of the heir of Hugh de Sancto Johanne by service of half a knight’s fee. The manor of Empnesworth, together with the manor of Gruttham, is held of the countess of Warrenne as of the honour of Lewes by service of a pair of gilt spurs. Sutton Scoteneye. (fn. 2) The manor except 2a. land therein, and 24a. meadow and 2s. rent in Welles, together with the homage and services of John atte Moure the elder, for the tenements formerly held by him of Hugh de Hastynges, all held of the gift of the said Hugh de Hastynges, viz. the meadow and rent to the said Nicholas and his heirs and the manor to the said Nicholas for life, with remainder as above, by a fine levied at Westminster on the morrow of All Souls 17 Edward III. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee and the meadow and rent are held of the abbess of Romesye by service of 6d. Grutham. The manor (extent given) held, together with the manor of Empnesworth, of the countess of Warrenne, as of the honour of Lewes, by service of a pair of gilt spurs. Date of death as above. Thomas his son, aged 17 years, is his heir.

	Cavendissh. A messuage, 50a. land, 4a. meadow, 6a. wood, 6a. pasture held of the king in chief by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. in demesne or in service on the day he died. He died on 8 October, 23 Edward III. Beatrice, aged 20 years and more, and Elizabeth, aged 18 years and more, his daughters, are his heirs.

	Neucherche. A messuage and 30a. arable, whereof 4 1/2a. land came to him by inheritance after the death of Joan his mother, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 3d. yearly to the ward of the castle of Dover and 1 1/2d. to the king’s court of Relevet. Rokyngg. A messuage and 3a. land, which came to him by inheritance after the death of William his father, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of rendering 3d. yearly. Neucherche and Bilsynton. 16a. land held of Master Nicholas de Sandwico by service of rendering 5s. 3 1/2d. yearly; 4a. land held of the abbot of Boxle by service of rendering 6d. yearly; all of which came to him after the death of his father. Neucherche. 3 1/2a. land held of the master of the poor priests of Canterbury by service of rendering 5s. yearly; 3a. land held of John de Westbery by service of rendering 3d. yearly; and 3 1/2a. land held of Thomas ate Capele by service of rendering 7s. yearly; all of which came to him after the death of his mother. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on the feast of the Decollation of St. John, 23 Edward III. Michael Galiot, his kinsman on his mother’s side, aged 30 years, is his heir of the land inherited after the death of his mother, and James de Harnhulle, his kinsman, aged three years, is his heir on his father’s side of the residue of the aforesaid lands.

	Endorsed:—The lands &c. have already been taken into the king’s hand by a writ of the exchequer directed to the escheator, returnable in the quinzaine of the Purification, as appears in the return lying there.
BUCKINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Aylesbury, 7 May, 24 Edward III.
	Draiton Passelewe. A messuage, a garden and two virgates of land. Mursle. Twelve messuages, twelve virgates of land and the wood called Murslegrove. All held of the abbot and convent of Wouborne by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Styuicle. 80a. land held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, by service of 12d. yearly as of the house of the abbess of Fontevrault (de Fonte Ebroldi). [Styuicle?] 4 1/2 virgates of land and a mill held of the heirs of Henry de Clynton by service of 3s., 1lb. pepper, 1lb. cummin and a pair of spurs, price 6d. 1 1/2 hides of land held of the same heirs, who held of William Chayndut, as of the manor of Langeleye. He held no other lands &c. in the county so far as the jury could enquire. He died on 6 May, 23 Edward III. Richard his son, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

	[Hennowe.] A messuage, 60a. land, 4a. meadow, 8a. wood, 3a. pasture and 10s. rent held of the king in chief by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee. She died on 16 July, 24 Edward III. Beatrice wife of Stephen Bacoun, her daughter, aged 21 years and more, is her heir.

A messuage, 3 bovates, 16a. land and a third part of a mill held of the king in chief, as of the lands late of Robert de Clifford, which are in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of his heir, by service of 4s. yearly for cornage, suit at the county of Westmoreland every month, and service of 12d. yearly for puture of the bailiff. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 3 October last. Christiana, Alice and Joan, daughters of Eda, one of his sisters, of full age, are his heirs as to a moiety of his inheritance; and Adam son of John son of Isabel, the other sister of the said John Cudberd, aged 8 years, is his heir as to the other moiety.
