130. SIMON DE CRAUCOMBE.
Writ, 12 July, 23 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Somerton, Monday the feast of St. Margaret, 23 Edward III.
Craucombe. A moiety of the manor (extent given), including 5s. rent only, because the tenants of the manor are dead through the pestilence, held to him and the heirs of his body, by the grant of Hugh Randolf, with remainder to Simon de Craucombe the younger, his brother, and the heirs of his body. The said moiety is held of the king by reason of the minority of John, son and heir of John de Bello Campo, who is in the king’s wardship, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died, without heir of his body, on Thursday after SS. Peter and Paul last. The reversion of the said moiety belongs to Iseult, daughter and heir of the said Simon the younger, who died long before the death of the said Simon the elder. The said Iseult, aged 16 years and more, is his heir by the grant aforesaid.

131. JOHN DE BULSHAM.
Writ, 28 July, 23 Edward III.
SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Cicestre, 21 November, 23 Edward III.
Bulsham, in the parish of Yabeton. The manor (extent given), held by the grant of Richard de Bredeford to the said John and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Roger, brother of the said John, who survives, and the heirs of his body, by a fine levied in 19 Edward III. There is no rent this year because the tenants are all dead, who used to render 20s. yearly, and no one will rent their tenements or have anything to do with them. The manor is held by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, as of the fees sometime of Robert de Tatteshale, and are in the king’s hand because the heirs of the said Robert have not sued their right out of the king’s hand.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 1 July, 23 Edward III. Roger de Bulsham, his brother, aged 30 years and more, is his heir as well in blood as in tail.

132. WILLIAM BARDE, of Osgodby.
Writ to the escheator in co. York, 18 November, 23 Edward III.
YORK. Inq.] …(Top torn away.)
[Osgodby?] Twenty bovates of land … four tofts … lie waste from the time of the said William Bard’s death … 10a. poor meadow … and l1s. 6d. rents of free tenants for fines of the wapentake there and in Lebreston, Bryniston and Cayton. The said bovates render nothing for want of tenants and because of the pestilence (mortalitatem).
Osgodby and Cayton. Six tofts and nine bovates of land, held of Henry earl of Lancaster, as of the castle and honour of Pikryng, by service of rendering 10s. yearly, as of the socage of Pikeryng. The said tofts lie waste for want of tenants and because of the pestilence aforesaid since the said William’s death. Each of the said nine bovates used to be worth yearly before the pestilence, viz. for five or six years last past 7s., but now nothing.
Westlutton. The manor (extent given), including a capital messuage in ruins, held of Ralph de Hastynges by knight service. There are twelve bovates of land, each of which used to be worth, before the pestilence, 8s., and now but three are in culture and are let for 15s. this year; and of seven cottager’s tofts there, four only are in occupation (in tenura).
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 24 August last. Robert Barde, son of Thomas Barde son of the said William, aged 13 years and more, is his heir.

133. JOHN DE ELYNGGE.
Writ, 2 May, 23 Edward III.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Elyngge, Saturday after St. Dunstan, 23 Edward III.
Elyngge. A messuage, three cottages, 51a. land, 7a. meadow lying on the sea-shore, worth only 4s. 8d. yearly because often inundated and the said John receives nothing but the first crop of grass, 7a. wood of oakling (querculos), the profit whereof cannot be estimated because the said wood is common and there are no acorns, and 16s. rent held of the king in chief by service of bringing the return of all writs delivered to him by the sheriff to the hundred-courts of Estmedenia, Westmedenia, Fresshwatere and Sweneston, in the Isle of Wight, and Cristchurch Twynham, Ryngwode, Forde, Rudbrigg and the New Forest, and of exercising the office of bailiff itinerant in the said hundreds in default of bailiffs, and of executing all writs and precepts of the king directed to him by the sheriff, except the three cottages and 4a. land, which are held of Hugh le Camoys by service of 18d. yearly.
He died on Sunday before St. Mark last. John de Elyngge his son, aged a year and a half, is his heir.

134. MARGARET de SWYNEFORD, of Great Styuecle.
Writ, 22 August, 23 Edward III.
HUNTINGDON. Inq. taken at Huntyngdon on Saturday after St. Martin, 23 Edward III.
Great Styucle. A ruinous messuage, 240a. arable, four bondmen (nativi) and 4a. meadow held as of her own inheritance by the said Margaret, whom Thomas Fitz Eustace, who survives, married, of the abbey of Rameseye, lately void and in the king’s hand, by service of a mark yearly. The said tenements ought, by the courtesy of England, to remain to the said Thomas for his life by reason of the procreation of Joan, daughter of the said Thomas and Margaret.
She died on Monday before St. Peter’s Chains last, on which day Isabel and Elizabeth, daughters of William de Swyneford and Eleanor his wife, kinswoman of the said Margaret, were heirs of the said Margaret; the said Eleanor then being pregnant, afterwards bore a son named Thomas, now aged 15 days, who is kinsman and next heir of the said Margaret at present.

Writ concerning the said Joan, 30 September, 23 Edward III.
Writ concerning the said John, 8 November, 23 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, according to the tenor of the two writs annexed thereto, on Sunday after St. Katherine, 23 Edward III.
Messyngge. The manor (extent given) held by the said Joan for her life, as of the inheritance of John Baynard, son and heir of the said Thomas and Joan, of the king as of the honour of Reines, by service of a knight’s fee and a half. The said John after her death entered the said manor, as his inheritance, and died seised thereof.
Knepesho and Bryche. Certain tenements, called the manors of Knepesho and Bryche, held by the said John jointly with Isabel his wife, who survives, of John Gernoun, knight, service not known, by the grant of Thomas le Rowe, chaplain, and Lucy Shaldeford to the said John and Isabel and the heirs of the said John.
Burnham. A certain marsh held jointly in the same form of John filz Wauter, service not known.
St. Lawrence. The manor, which Roger Baynard and Alice his sister hold for life, held in reversion by the said John, of Sir John filz Wauter, by knight’s service. The said Roger and Margery his wife hold for life a messuage and 24a. arable by the grant of Thomas Baynard, father of the said John, and a tenement sometime of William Olyve, a bondman of the manor of Messyngge, by the grant of the said Joan and John.
Little Reynes. A messuage, 80a. arable, 3a. meadow, 7a. pasture, 20a. wood and 6s. rent held by the said John of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Joan died on 20 September last and the said John, her son, aged 40 years and more, was her heir. He died on 4 November last and Thomas, his son, aged 12 years and more, is his heir.

Writ of amotus touching the said Maud who held for life of the inheritance of the heir of John de Wilughby, a minor in the king’s wardship, 8 October, 23 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Lodone, 25 October, 23 Edward III.
Wethacre and Great Hoboys. A moiety of the manors held for life of John de Wilughby, deceased, and Joan his wife, who survives, and the heirs of the said John; and the other moiety of the said manors held for life of the same Joan, as of her inheritance. The manors are held of John le Fitz Water by service of a knight’s fee.
She died on 8 May last, as the jurors understand. Who is her next heir they know not.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Ipswich, 7 September, 23 Edward III.
Hyntlisham. The manor (extent given) held jointly by him and Margery his wife, who survives, and the heirs male of their bodies, of the king in chief by service of a sparrowhawk (nysy) or 2s. yearly.
He died on 9 July last. Margery his daughter, aged 30 years, is his heir.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Exeter, Tuesday after St. Bartholomew, 23 Edward III (defaced).
Tettecote and Kary. The manor held of Sir William la Souche by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Lerkebeare. A carucate of land held of James de Cobeham by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
He was seised of no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Tuesday after [St. James last. Margaret, late the wife of Robert le Fitz Eliz, aged 26 years and more, and Maud, late the wife of John de Chevereston the younger, aged 24 years and more, his daughters, are his heirs. Supplied from Exchequer Enrolment].

138. ROBERT COOK, or LE COOK, of Middle Ovent or Midlovente.
Writ, 18 December, 23 Edward III.
SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Cycestre, 16 March, 24 Edward III.
Midlovente. A messuage and 16a. land held of the king in chief, as parcel of a certain serjeanty sometime of Hugh le Waleys, by service of rendering to the king 4s. 5 1/4d. yearly by the hands of the sheriff of Sussex or of the bailiffs of the liberty of Richard, earl of Arundel. The said tenements are a third part of the said serjeanty, which serjeanty renders yearly 13s. 4d. and is called in the Exchequer in the Pipe (in Scaccario in Pipa) the serjeanty of Lovente.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 6 December, 23 Edward III, a bastard and without heir of his body, and so the said tenements are the king’s escheat.

LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Boseworth, 20 August, 23 Edward III.
Boseworth. The manor, held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of the gift of Nicholas de Harecourt, late parson of the church of Shepeye, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, of the heir of John de Bello Monte by service of a knight’s fee.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Staunton Harecourt, 3 July, 23 Edward III.
Stauntone Harecourt. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, and the heirs male of their bodies, by fine levied on the octave of St. Martin, 4 Edward III, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a several fishery and lands of bondmen and cottars who used to render 30l. yearly, but they are dead through the pestilence and their lands &c. lie untilled in the lord’s hand because no one is willing to buy or hire them.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 6 June last. Richard his son, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

140. JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF ROGER DE MARYNS.
Writ, 9 October, 23 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. taken at Canterbury, 3 (sic) October, 23 Edward III.
Oterpole. A third part of the manor held in dower of the king in chief by service of rendering 40d. yearly for the ward of the castle of Dover.
Blakemannestone. A third part of the manor similarly held by the like service.
Elmestede. The manor held for life of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of paying at the said archbishop’s manor of Westgate 10s. yearly and by suit at the court there every three weeks.
Newebourgh. The manor held for life of Philippa, queen of England, in socage, of her manor of Middelton by fealty and service of 26s. 8d. yearly and suit at the court of the said manor twice a year.
Leuesham. The manor held for life of Thomas de Bacwelle, in socage, by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly.
The above premises ought, after her death, to remain to Henry de Haute, kinsman and heir of Roger de Maryns, sometime her husband, aged 30 years and more.
She died on Thursday before the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Bocstede, 6 December, 23 Edward III.
Bocstede. The manor held for life of the gift of Roger de Mareyns, late her husband, of the inheritance of Henry de Haute, who survives, of Sir John de Waleys, knight, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; and other tenements held for her life in socage of the inheritance of the said Henry of the archbishopric of Canterbury, then void and in the king’s hand by the death of John de Ufford, late archbishop elect and confirmed, by service of rendering 20s. yearly to the archbishop at his manor of Stonhamme.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.

Dudeheye in the parish of Stoghton. Certain tenements held of John Aket, service not known.

The manor (extent given), with its member of la Moure, held of divers lords as follows, viz.:—the manor, a garden, 80a. land, a mill and 14s. rent held of the earl of Arundel by service of keeping a sparrow-hawk yearly; 2a. meadow held of John le Botelyr by service of 2s. yearly; a messuage, a garden, a dovecot, 28a. land, a mill, 8a. meadow, 4a. wood and 4s. 6d. rent at la Moure held of Nicholas le Devenyssh by service of 6s. yearly and suit at his court of Empnesworth every three weeks; and 25a. land held of the lord of the manor of Warblyngton by service of 10s. 1d. yearly.
Wellesworthe. A messuage, 105a. land, a dovecot and 17s. 5d. rent held of John Romyn by service of 16s. yearly and suit of court every three weeks.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Lurdyngton, 26 September, 23 Edward III.
Lurdyngton. The manor held for life of the gift of Henry, parson of the church of Gatecombe, with remainder to John, son of John de Insula, who died a year ago, and his heirs. The said manor is held of John Engayne, knight, by service of a knight’s fee and a pair of gloves at Easter.
Compton. Certain tenements in the town held for life of the gift of the aforesaid Henry, with remainder to John, son of John de Insula, who died as above. The said tenements are held of the heirs of Edmund de Sancto Johanne, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, and doing suit of court at the manor of Halnenaker, which is in the hand of Michael de Ponynges, every three weeks.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 27 August, 23 Edward III. John, son of John de Insula her son, aged 6 years at the feast of St. Leonard last, is her heir.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS. Inq. taken at Hedon before John Darcy, keeper of the manor of Brustewyk in the liberty of Holdernesse, Tuesday, 30 March, 24 Edward III.
Out Neuton. A messuage, seven bovates of land, 30a. pasture, a windmill and 29s. 2d. rent from divers free tenants for twenty-three bovates of land, held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a thirteenth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit at the king’s wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks.
Skeftlyng. A messuage, three bovates and three parts of a bovate of land and 8s. 2 1/2d. rent from divers free tenants for four bovates and a quarter of land, held of the king in chief as of the honour aforesaid, by service of a forty-eighth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit at the wapentake as aforesaid.
He died on Saturday, 29 August last. Stephen his son, aged 21 years at the feast of the Annunciation last, is his heir.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS. Inq. taken at Hedon, Friday, 2 October, 23 Edward III.
Redmar. A messuage and six bovates of land in demesne and two bovates of land in service held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a forty-eighth part of a knight’s fee and rendering to the abbot of Meaux 2s. yearly. Divers free tenants hold the aforesaid two bovates of land in service by service of a pair of spurs or 6d. yearly.
Northorp and Esyngton. A messuage and four bovates and a half of land in Northorp, and a plot of land called Lokholm in Esyngton, held of the king in chief as of the honour aforesaid, by fealty and by service of rendering 13s. 2d. yearly at the king’s manor of Brustwyk.
She died on 6 August last. John, son of John de Redmar son of the said Alice, aged 23 years and more, is her heir.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS. Inq. taken at Esington, Wednesday, 27 November, 23 Edward III.
Sunthorp. A messuage and two bovates of land held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a one hundred and ninetieth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit at the king’s wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks; and 7a. land held of William de Hoton by knight’s service.
Wythornse. A messuage and four bovates of land held of the heirs of Philip de Meaux by knight’s service.
Paghelflete. 6s. 8d. rent held of the king in chief as of the honour aforesaid by service of rendering 2d. yearly at the manor of Brustewyk.
He died on 15 September last. John his son, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.

Stok. A messuage and 22a. land held of the heir of Richard de Cornubia, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Burford, by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee and 10s. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. on the day he died.
He died on the feast of St. James the Apostle last. Nicholas his son, aged 12 years on the feast of All Saints last, is his heir.

Bouton in the parish of Dodyngton and Southo. A moiety of the manor (extent given), which, with the other moiety, is held of the king in chief as of the honour of Huntingdon by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and doing suit every month at a court held in Huntyngdon by the escheator, which court is in the king’s hand through the forfeiture of Robert le Bruys.
She died on Monday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Thomas de Wauton, her son, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

Stoforde. A messuage and half a hide of land held of Katherine, late the wife of John de Sancto Johanne of Lageham by service of 6s. yearly; and a grove called Bastardesgrof held of the same Katherine by service of 12d. yearly for all services except suit of the said Katherine’s court.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Wytham on Saturday after St. John before the Latin Gate, 23 Edward III.
Blunteshale. A moiety of the manor (extent given), including 200a. land, the pasture whereof, when it is not sown, is worth 2d. per acre, but it cannot be sold this year on account of the common pestilence in the country, held for her life jointly with John de Boys, sometime her husband, long since deceased, of the grant of Robert de Barnham to them and the heirs of the said John, of the king as of the honour of Peverel by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by suit at the court of the said honour monthly.
She died on 27 April last. John, son of the said John de Boys, aged 31 years and more, is the said John’s heir of the said moiety.

The said Margery was abducted against her will by John de Dalton, knight, and to whom afterwards she was married with her consent, whereby the said manor was seised into the king’s hand, according to the statute. The manor is held of the countess of Pembroke in free socage by service of 12s. 2d. yearly.

Benteleye. John de Benteleye, deceased, held of the king in chief on the day he died. After his death the manor of Benteleye (extent given) came to the king’s hands by reason of the minority of John, his son and heir; and the king by his charter granted the custody of the said manor with the marriage of the heir to William de Petlyng for a rent of two marks yearly at the exchequer; the latter granted his estate to William Chaumpion and the manor is now in his custody; it is held of the king in chief by serjeanty, viz. by service of keeping the king’s hay of Benteleye. No other lands &c. came to the king’s hands or to the hands of any others by reason of the said heir’s minority.
