254. PETER DE SCALLEBY.
Writ of certiorari, on the petition of William son of the said Peter, whether or not the said Peter held a messuage and land in Scalleby, which are in the king’s hand, of the heir of Walter late bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, who has lately proved his age, by what service, and who is his next heir &c. 20 October, 3 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. Thursday after St. John the Evangelist, 3 Edward III.
Scalleby. A messuage and a moiety of a bovate of land, held of the heir of Walter late bishop of Coventre and Lichefeld, then under age, by service of a hundredth part of a knight’s fee.
William his son, aged 26 years and more, is his next heir.

255. JOHN SON OF FULK DE ORREBY.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Joan late the wife of the said John, that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Dalby of which she was enfeoffed jointly with her said husband, 14 April, 3 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. Friday after the Invention of Holy Cross, 3 Edward III.
Dalby. The said Joan was jointly enfeoffed with the said John of the manor, by fine levied in the king’s court, in 10 Edward II, of the gift of John son of Peter de Burtone, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the earl of Lancaster as of the fee of earl of Ferrers, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee, and she continued her seisin for some time after the said John’s death, until the said manor was taken into the king’s hand by the sub-escheator ex officio as he said.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. 20 December, 3 Edward III.
Croulee. The manor held for his life of the inheritance of John de Pateshull, lord of Bletnesho, of Joan Botetorte, lady of Neuport Painel, by service of 2s. yearly and two arrow-heads, and suit at the court of Neuport every three weeks.
John his son, aged 5 years, is his next heir.

257. GILBERT DE CULEWENNE.
Writ, 31 December, 3 Edw. III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. Monday after the octave of the Purification, 3 Edward III.
Thornthwait and Heppe. The manors held of Robert de Clifford, lord of Westmoreland, by homage, fealty, and service of 10s. 10d. for cornage yearly, and suit at the county [court] of Appelby every month. The said Gilbert, eight years before his death, gave the said manors to Thomas de Preston to hold to him and his heirs, who, after having seisin for 14 weeks, enfeoffed the said Gilbert and Eda his wife of the same, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Gilbert, of which estate the said Gilbert died seised, and the said Eda still survives.
Gilbert his son, aged 33 years and more, is his next heir.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. Saturday before the Purification, 3 Edward III. (defective.)
Wirkyngton. The manor (extent given) including [a fishery?] in the water of Derwent, held of the heir of Thomas de Multon, who is under age and in the king’s wardship, as of the honour of Egremond, by homage, fealty, service of 43s. 4d. yearly for cornage, and suit of court every three weeks.
Seton. The manor (extent given), held of Anthony de Lucy by homage, fealty, and service of 10s. for cornage yearly, and suit of court every three weeks.
Heir as above.

258. ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF THOMAS LE BRUN, of Burton on the Wolds.
Writ, 21 March, 3 Edward III.
LEICESTER. Inq. Wednesday the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 3 Edward III.
Burton on the Wolds. Two ruined messuages, lands and rent, held for her life of the grant of Robert le Brun made to the said Thomas and Alice, to hold to them and the heirs or assigns of the said Thomas, of the king, by reason of the forfeiture of Henry de Bello Monte, by service of a twelfth part of a knight’s fee, and 2d. yearly; a messuage, lands and rent, similarly held for her life of Reginald de Berges and his heirs for 21d. yearly; a messuage and lands held of William de (sic) Botiler by knight’s service; a ruined messuage, lands and tenements held for her life of the grant of the said Robert le Brun as aforesaid, of William de Cotes of Prestwold, by service of 12d. yearly; 13a. land held of William de Prestwold by service of an arrow yearly and 12d.; two cottages rendering 6s. yearly held of the grant of the said Robert as aforesaid, by service of a rose yearly, of John Mallore, lord of Walton; and 18a. 1r. land held for her life of the grant of the said Robert made to the said Thomas and Alice and the heirs and assigns of the said Thomas, of William le Brun, Roger Barcolf, Roger de Fryseby and Richard de Kereby, by service of 23 1/2d. yearly.
Robert, son of the said Thomas and Alice, aged 16 years and more, is her next heir of the said land.

Bereford St. Martin. A messuage and lands held of the king in chief, by service of keeping a moiety of the king’s forest of Gravele, at his own expense, and by service of rendering 10s. yearly, at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff; a capital messuage, land &c. (extent given), held of the prioress of Ambresbury by service of rendering 13s. yearly; two messuages and lands held of Thomas Cheyndut by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, and by service of rendering 12s. 1d. yearly to the said Thomas, and 3 1/2 qr. of corn, 3 1/2 qr. of barley, 1 qr. of oats, and 1/2 qr. of peas, and 6s. 6d. yearly to Joan late the wife of William de Asheleghe, for her life; a water-mill held of Thomas Cheyndut by service of rendering 20s. yearly; and a cottage and 2a. land held of Philip de Stouwe by service of rendering 1lb. of pepper yearly.
Hurdecote. 26a. land and 4a. meadow held of the heirs of Bartholomew de Badelesmere by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Foffonte. 12s. rent held of the abbess of Wilton by service of doing fealty only.
Stupellangeford. 12s. rent held of Oliver de Ingham by fealty only; and there are 9s. 3d. yearly rent of free tenants, 10s. yearly rent of free cottars, and 30s. yearly rent of other cottars who hold at will.
Henry de Chaucombe, his brother, aged 27 years on the feast of St. Denis last, is his next heir.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. Friday the feast of St. Thomas the Archbishop, 3 Edward III.
Middeltone in the hundred of Cristchurche. A quarter of the manor (extent given), held of John la Zousche by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee, and paying him 6d. yearly by the hands of William Peverel, and 6d. yearly to the said William for suit of the hundred of Christchurch Twynham.
Avene in the hundred of Cristchurche. A quarter of certain lands and tenements which sometime were of John de Lymesye, viz.—a capital messuage and lands, a several pasture in Duddemor, and rents &c. held of John la Zousche by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee.
Heir as above, aged 25 years and more.
WILTS AND SOUTHAMPTON. Extent or summary of the lands and tenements specified above, divided into two parts and a third part.

261. JOHN SON OF GEOFFREY BURDELEYS or DE BURDELEYS.
Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of Margaret, daughter of John de Crek, late the wife of the said John son of Geoffrey, that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Sculton which the said John and Margaret acquired to themselves and the heirs of their bodies, of Geoffrey Burdeleys, 10 October, 3 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. 20 November, 3 Edward III.
Schulton. The manor was acquired by the said John and Margaret, with the late king’s licence, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the said Geoffrey, and is held of the king in chief by service of being the king’s larderer (lardonarius) at his coronation; and they continued their peaceful seisin thereof from 6 October, 14 Edward II. until 30 July, 3 Edward III, when the said (John) died.

262. CHRISTIANA DE LA STANE.
Writ de diem clausit extremum, 6 January, 3 Edward III. Endorsed with return from the escheator, that he has found in the memoranda of the time of Master Richard de Clare, sometime the late king’s escheator, that the said Christiana died in 12 Edward II, after whose death by the king’s command he took her lands &c. into the king’s hand, until they were delivered to her right heirs by another mandate of the same king; wherefore he has taken no lands into the king’s hand by virtue of this writ.
