457. EDMUND LE BOTILLER.
Writ of certiorari on the complaint of John Pipard that whereas he enfeoffed the said Edmund of a messuage, lands, &c., in Fretewelle, by a fine levied before the justices of the bench, and the said Edmund granted him the same for life, the escheator after the death of the said Edmund took the same into the king’s hand as if held of the king, 12 June, 16 Edward II.
OXFORD. Inq. Wednesday before St. Peter ad Vincula, 17 Edward II.
Fretewell. A messuage, 80a. land, 1a. meadow, and 6 marks, 2s. 2d. rent, were acknowledged by John Pypard by fine to be the right of Edmund le Botiler, who granted them to the said John for life, and he continued his estate therein until the death of the said Edmund.
The said tenements are held of John de Grey, lord of Somerton, co. Oxford, by service of a sore sparrowhawk.

All which are in the king’s hand because the said Gerard held them of Henry de Perci then a minor and in the king’s wardship.

Brunby manor. Sixteen bovates of land, and 2s. rent, in the hands of Gerard Salveyn by the grant of the said Gerard his father.

A ruinous messuage, 6 bovates of arable land, 10a. meadow, 10a. fen de Ker, 20s. rent of assize, and pleas &c. of court, with 5s. rent in Redburn yearly, and 10s. rent in Filyngham, all held of the king in chief, by service of finding in the king’s Welsh war a crossbowman with a crossbow without a cord, and five bolts, upon a hackney, price 5s., for forty days at her own costs; but the said service is now rated at 60s. which she paid to the sheriff yearly for the king’s use.
Ralph de Nevill her son, aged 30, is her next heir.
Endorsed:—The sum of the said alienation (was) 7l. 17s. 8d., and the said Thomas made fine for himself and his tenants with their consent, viz. 60s. yearly, the tenants answering to him according to the quantity of their tenements yearly; and he and the tenants shall do service of 1/2 knight’s fee in common.

Great Bourton. A messuage, 3 virgates of land, 3a. meadow, and 56s. rent, &c. held of the manor of Bannebury, of the bishopric of Lincoln, now in the king’s hand and in the custody of Robert de Arderne by the king’s commission, for 1/3 knight’s fee and suit at the court of the hundred of Bannebury. He held no other lands &c.
John his son, aged 14, whose body remains in the hands of Robert de Arderne keeper of the manor of Bannebury, is his next heir.
Return (by the escheator) that the said Robert de Arderne will not suffer seisin to be taken of the above lands, and immediately on the death of the said John, carried the heir to the castle of Bannebury, and there detains him. (Undated.)

Writ of certiorari on the complaint of Joan, lata the wife of the said John, and John their son, that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Mammehevede by Doulesch, whereof they were seised jointly with the said John, 22 August, 18 Edward II.

Mammehevede by Doulesch. The manor held of William le Speek by service of a knight’s fee, was granted by William de Leycestre, chaplain, to the said John, Joan his wife, and John their son, to hold to them and the heirs of the body of the said John son of John, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John de Carru; and the said Joan and John the son have continued their seisin without change of their estate.
Writ of certiorari to the sheriff of Berks to enquire whether violence (vim laici) has been put upon the manor of Mullesford, 7 May, 18 Edward II.
[BERKS.] Inq. Monday after the Ascension, 18 Edward II.
The violence (vis laica) which was placed on the manor of Molesforde by Master William de Carru was removed by the said William’s order on Monday the feast of St. John ante Portam Latinam in the night, and on the following day at the first hour, Sir Richard Talbot, knight, Joan late the wife of John de Carru, John his son, and many others (specified or unknown) entered upon the said manor, and still hold it by force, against the will of the king’s escheator.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. held at ‘la Brokenecrouche’ in the suburb of London, on Thursday after St. Gregory the Pope, 17 Edward II.
Parish of St. Giles of the Lepers. A messuage called Bloemundesbury, 100a. land, 18a. pasture, and 27s. rent &c., held of the king by service of a sore sparrowhawk at the king’s exchequer.
Kentyshtown. 50a. land and 3a. pasture, held of Henry de Bydyk by service of 8s. yearly.
He held no other tenements in the county.

Writ of plenius certiorari, because from the rolls of the chancery it appears that King Henry III, in his 49th and 50th years, for the good service of William Belet granted him the said lands &c. which were of Thomas Viel sometime citizen of London, the king’s enemy, doing the services accustomed, which lands &c. the said Richard acquired of him, 8 June, 17 Edward II.
MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Westminster, on Tuesday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 17 Edward II.
Thomas Viel sometime citizen of London, held the said lands before he forfeited them to King Henry the king’s grandfather, of the said king by service, and not by any other service which ought to confer wardship and marriage; and the said Richard held no other lands by which the wardship of his lands ought to pertain to the king.

By a fine of 60l. which Walter de Waldeshef made with the king, paying 30l. at the feast of St. Michael next and 30l. at Easter following, there was granted to him the wardship of all the lands &c. which were of Richard de Glouc[ester], citizen of London, in the same city, and in Blemondesbiry, Holebourn and Kentisshtoun, now in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Richard his son and heir. Afterwards on 15 January, year 17, he paid by a tally 30l.
