HEREFORD. Inq. Thursday the feast of St. Thomas, 6 Edw. II.
Hereford City. 5 tenements held of the king in free burgage as other citizens hold, paying 5s. yearly in part payment of the farm of the city, which city the citizens hold of the king at fee farm by his charter for 40l. yearly at his exchequer; and 98a. land and 2a. meadow, held of the bishop of Hereford, and 7a. land held of the prior of Lanton Prima, paying 2d. yearly per acre.

William Roed, his kinsman, aged 40 and more, is his next heir.
Writ de melius inquirendo, to William de Mortuo Mari and Richard de Baskervill, because the king understands that John, son of Robert le Crump, and William Reod each claim to be the heir, and that Hugh Hakelut the sub-escheator, is kinsman of the said William, and maintains him in the matter, 18 March, 6 Edw. Soterle. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, together with the manors of Stoke and Harche, co. Chester, as of the honour of Chester, by service of finding a barded horse in the army of the earl of Chester in Wales in time of war for forty days; which honour is now in the king’s hand, and the manors of Stoke and Harche on the day when the said Roger died were held by Edmund de Soterle, son and heir of the said Roger, by his gift with the king’s licence.
Edmund his son, aged 26 and more, is his next heir.

Blaxhale. A moiety of the manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the manor of Donnyngworthe, which sometime was of Roger Bygot, earl of Norfolk and Suffolk and marshal of England, but is now in the hand of Sir Thomas de Brotherton and Sir Edmund his brother by the king’s assignment, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, and the other moiety held of Robert de Ufford in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
Assch. The manor held of Alice Bygot, countess of Norfolk and Suffolk and marshal of England, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, which service was assigned to her in dower by the king, to be held of the castle of Framelingham by the same service.

Writ of certiorari, on the petition of Roger le Somenour seeking the lands, &c. of the said Walter, who died in the time of the king’s father, as his brother and heir, 22 Feb. 6 Edw. II.

Asswelle in Fynchingefeld. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty, by service of finding spits for roasting flesh (brochias at assandum carn ..) at the king’s coronation; which service is rated in the exchequer at 1/2 mark yearly rent: the manor was taken into the hand of the late King Edward by the death of the said Walter, and is still in the king’s hand.
Fynchingefeld. 40a. arable held of John de Nortoft by service of 9s. yearly, and similarly in the king’s hand.
Of all which Agnes late the wife of Henry le Somenour holds a third part in dower, dowered by the king: they were acquired jointly by the said Henry and Walter of Nicholas son of Simon de Asswell by fine levied in the king’s court, to them and the heirs of the body of the said Walter, with remainder to the right heirs of said Henry: the said Walter died without heir of himself, and the said Roger is right heir of the said Henry.
Roger le Somenour his brother, aged 42, is his next heir.

396. ROBERT DE ROS OF WERK, a Scotch rebel, deceased.
Writ of extent and partition, on the petition of John Salveyn and John de Knoches and Margaret and Isabel their wives, daughters and heirs of the said Robert, that his lands, &c. may be rendered to them in accordance with the late King Edward’s grant to John Comyn of Badenoch and other men of Scotland who were at war against him, the said Margaret and Isabel having been born in Scotland, and having proved their ages before William de Bevercotes, the king’s chancellor of Scotland, 28 Sept. 6 Edw. II.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. Thursday after St. Scolastica, 6 Edw. II.
Belestre and Playnemelore in Tyndale. The manors (full extents given), including a right of pasture (herbagium) called Le Haukstrothre, and shielings (scalinge) called Lynchele, Todholes, and Ramcshawes, were held by Margaret mother of the said Robert, on the day of his joining the king’s enemies, viz.—part by way of dower and part in lieu of her third part of lands in Le Senewhare in Scotland, and ought now to revert to the said Margaret and Isabel. Whereupon John de Alaynechales, the sub-escheator, came to give seisin of the said manor of Belestre to the attorney of John Salvayn and Margaret his wife, as their pourparty of the said manors, but Thomas son of Eustace the forester of Belestre, with others unknown, held the capital messuage by force so that he could not execute his office.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Morpeth on Thursday after St. Hilary, 6 Edw. II.
John de Aleincheles the sub-escheator, having made extent and partition of the lands, &c. of the said Robert and assigned his pourparty to John Salvayn, came near the castle of Werk to deliver him seisin in the king’s name, and there Simon le Warenner of Werk and others (specified), by the counsel of Richard del Fermorie of Werk, arrested him on the king’s highway, violently led him towards the Twede, and took from him all the king’s writs, the extent, partition, and other warrants and letters found upon him and his clerk, and returned to the castle of Werk, so that he cannot and dares not execute the king’s mandate further.

Creuker and Farlynton. The manors with the advowson of the church of Farlinton, held of Robert le Ewer, as of the manor of Warblinton, by service of three barbed arrows yearly; and immediately after the death of the said John came Roger de Upton, his yeoman, with the assent of others of the servants and intruded himself into those manors, asserting that he had a grant thereof under the name of the said John, to him, Joan his wife, and John their son, and letters patent to John Byaumond to put them in seisin; and he holds these manors still, and no one has come on behalf of the heir of the said John to claim them.

Middelton. A messuage, 40a. land, 2a. meadow, 20a. pasture, and 6s. 8d. rent, held of divers lords by divers services but nothing of the king in chief; and immediately after the said John’s death came Adam de Catfeld, his yeoman, with the assent of Hubert de Swenesford, Roger de Opton and others of the servants, by Alexander de Walecote, showing a charter of feoffment under the name of the said John, which the jury hold to have been fraudulently made, and intruded himself into the said lands and still holds them.

Westbechesworth. The manor with the hamlet of La Boxlonde, held of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, in chief by service of 12d. yearly, and suit at his court of Blehchyngeleye; and the said hamlet is charged with 40s. to Joan late the wife of John de Wautone, in the name of dower of other tenements in Westbechesworth and Conynggeleye.
Heggecourt. The manor held in chief of John de Sancto Johanne of Lageham by service of 1d. yearly.
Horne by Tanrigge. 100a. heath held of Thomas de Warbelton, knight, by service of 6s. yearly, and suit at his court of Tanrigge.
Lingefeld. 7a. land held of Thomas de Leukenore, knight, by service of 6d. yearly; 5a. meadow held of Giles de Bileserche by service of 1d. yearly; 4a. meadow held of William atte More by service of 4d. yearly; and 1a. meadow held of John de Heystede by service of 1d. yearly.
Westbechesworth. 9a. arable, 1a. meadow, and a water-mill, held of the abbess of Godestowe by service of a rose yearly.
Turbervyle. The manor held of the heirs of Philip Burnel in chief, as of the manor of Schene, rendering 18s. yearly, and doing suit at the court of Schene; and immediately after the death of the said John came Hubert de Swyneford his yeoman, with the assent of others of the servants, asserting that he had a charter of feoffment of the said John, which the jury say was made by fraud, and intruded himself into the said manor and still holds the same.
Conelingeleye alias Conynggeleye. The manor held of the earl of Gloucester by homage and service of 1/8 knight’s fee; and Roger de Upton, the said John’s yeoman, with the assent of the said Hubert and other servants, immediately after the said John’s death intruded himself into the said manor showing a charter of feoffment of the said John, which the jury say was made by fraud, and still holds the same.

Writ to the escheator, holding a former inquisition to be superfluous and impertinent, to enquire whether the said John was seised on the day he died of a water-mill and lands, &c. in Forton by the enfeoffment of Walter de Gavelacre or not, and if not, how long before his death the said Walter intruded upon them, 20 Oct. 6 Edw. II.

Forton. The said John died siesed as of fee of a water-mill, 15a. land, 5a. meadow, 7a. wood, and 24s. 8d. rent, by the enfeoffment of Ralph Gavelacre and Alice his wife, and by the quit claim of the said Alice in her widowhood; but Walter de Gavelacre on the same day that the said John died, and after his death, intruded himself into the said tenements claiming an hereditary fee therein, and held them until he was ejected by Sir Hugh le Despenser, who now holds them by the king’s commission until the lawful age of the said John’s heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari, to enquire whether the said John was seised as of fee of the manor of Tylemundesdon, and 1 carucate land in Lyndelegh, and how, &c., 16 March, Edw. II. (defaced.)
SURREY. Inq. made at Suthwerk, 3 April, 7 Edw. II.
The tenement called Le Heggecourt alias Le Heycourt, which was contained in a former inquisition, is of the manor of Tylmundesdon, and of 1 carucate land in Lindelegh, of which manor and land the said John was sometime enfeoffed by Stephen de Appelderfeld, by fine levied in the late king’s court; and he was in seisin until three weeks before his death, when John de Sancto Johanne of Lageham, the elder, considering him to be dead, asserting that he only held the same for life, and claiming the reversion, entered upon the said manor, and ejected the said John de Berewyco; the said John de Berewyco held the said manor of the said John de Sancto Johanne, by service of 1d. yearly, who held of the king by knight’s service; the said John de Berewyco also died seised of the said carucate in Lindeleghe, which is now in the king’s hand in the name of wardship; John, son of the said John de Sancto Johanne, was present at the inquisition, asserting that he was enfeoffed of the said manor by his father in fee.

The manor (extent given), including a tenement in Kyrtlyngt(on), held for life only of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 6s. 8d., and doing all services due to the lords of the fee; and after her death the manor ought to revert to the said prior and his successors for ever, as a fine between them levied in the court of the late King Edward testifies. The said manor descended to the said Joan after the death of Thomas de Valoignes her father, being held of Edmund, earl of Cornwall, who held of the king in chief; and the said Joan, with the king’s licence and by confirmation of the said earl, gave it to brother William de Totale, then prior of the said Hospital, and his successors in frank almoin, and the said prior afterwards gave it to her for life as in the said fine is contained.

Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of John de Rocheford and Joan his wife, that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand certain lands, &c. in Ikeford and Estcleydon with the advowson of the church of Ikeford, which Robert de Laventon, parson of the church of Estcleydon, gave to Joan de Grey for life, with remainders to Margaret her daughter for life, and to the said Joan and the heirs of her body, 24 July, 7 Edw. II.

Est Cleydon. 8 messuages and 3 1/2 virgates land, held of the honour of Wallingford by knight’s service, were granted by the said Robert to the said Joan for life, with remainders to the said Margaret for life, and to the said Joan, daughter of the said Margaret, and the heirs of her body, and on failure of such heirs, then to one Thomas de Grey and his heirs, to be held of the chief lords of the fee by the services accustomed, viz.—of the honour of Wallingford by knight’s service. The said Joan de Gray survived the said Margaret, and after her decease the lands were taken by the escheator into the king’s hand in 6 Edw. II, who delivered them to Hugh le Despenser, the elder, and he delivered them to John de Haulo who now holds them, in what manner the jury know not.
Ikford. 5 messuages, 3 virgates and 19a. land, and 5a. meadow, with the advowson of the church, held of John son and heir of William ate Watere, were granted by the said Robert to the said Joan de Grey for life, with remainder to Thomas de Grey and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Joan, daughter of the said Joan de Grey, and her heirs. The said Joan de Grey survived the said Thomas, and immediately after her death one Joan, daughter and heir of the said Thomas, entered upon the said lands as her inheritance by the form of the said gift, and so holds them.
Fine made before the justices of the Bench, between the said Robert de Lavynton and Joan de Grey, whereby the said Joan warrants the above lands, &c. in Ikeford and Estcleydone to the said Robert against all men, dated in one month of Easter, 25 Edw. I.
Grant by the said Robert de Laventon, rector of the church of Est Claydon, to Lady Joan de Grey, the wife of Sir Robert de Gray, Margaret their daughter, late the wife of John le Fiz Bernard, and Joan daughter of the said John and Margaret, and the heirs of her body, of all the lands, &c. which he had of the gift of the said Lady Joan de Grey by a recognisance made before the justices of the Bench, in the town of Est Claydon and Bocleclaydon, to hold as abovesaid, with remainder to Thomas de Grey, son of the said Joan, and his heirs. Writ of scire facias to warn the said Hugh le Despenser and John de Haulo to be in the chancery in three weeks from Easter day next, to shew cause why the said lands should not be delivered to the said John and Joan, 1 April, 7 Edw. II.
