The manors (extents given), including the marsh of Flikesburgh and 22s. 6d. rent in Flikesburgh Stather, held of Philip son and heir of Norman de Arcy in chief by service of 2 1/2 knights’ fees. SOUTHAMPTON [; ISLE OF WIGHT].	Inq. made at Winchester on Monday before the Epiphany, 27 Edw. I.
	Kauleborne. The manor (extent given), which one Maud de Gadecombe gave to William le Estur, her son and heir, and the said Agnes in free marriage, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the said Maud by service of doing three attendances yearly at her court of Gatecombe. The said William and Agnes died without heir of their bodies, and the manor ought to revert to Baldwin de Insula, aged 24 and more, son and heir of Geoffrey de Insula, brother and heir of the said William le Estur; and the said Baldwin holds the manor, together with all other manors within the island of the king in chief for 5 1/2 fees, and he has done homage for the same. Wytewell. The manor (full extent given) held by the said Agnes in dower, of the inheritance of the said Baldwin.

	Great Brumlegh. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held of the earl of Oxford by service of 1/2 knight’s fee. Thomas de Grelley is her son and next heir, but not yet of full age.

	Casterton. The manor (full extent given), including 11s. (yearly) called ‘streyeld,’ held in dower of the inheritance of Robert de Grelle, sometime her husband, of the earl of Lancaster in chief, as of the honour of Lancaster, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, rendering 10s. for the guard of Lancaster. Heir as first above.

SURREY.	Inq. made at Guldeford, 11 Feb. 27 Edw. I.
	Guldeford. 4a. meadow, a water-mill, messuages, lands and rents (full extent given with names of tenants), held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty by service of 25s. to be paid yearly at the king’s exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. John his son, aged 25, is his next heir.
OXFORD.	Inq. Sunday after the Epiphany, 27 Edw. I.
	Hamptone Stevene. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, by reason of Alice de Hampton his wife, who survives, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, doing scutage for half a fee to the king for all service; which Alice, long before the said Walter married her, held the manor and advowson aforesaid alone of the king in chief, and did homage for the same, and the said Walter had no right therein but for his life, and thus the same ought to remain after his death to the said Alice as her inheritance. He held nothing of others in the county. John, son of the said Walter and Alice, aged 22, is his next heir.
MIDDLESEX.	Inq. Monday after the Epiphany, 27 Edw. I.
	La Poyle. He held nothing in the county on the day he died, for five years before his death he enfeoffed John de la Poyle his son and Isabel his wife of the manor of La Poyle (extent given with names of tenants), to hold of Sir Thomas de Hunterkumbe in chief by knight’s service, rendering 1/2 mark yearly, viz.—40d. for twenty-four weeks, and 40d. for other twenty-four weeks; and the said Walter died in the manor as a guest at the will of his said son. Stanwelle. The said John by the enfeoffment of his father as abovesaid holds 40a. land in fee farm of Sir Richard de Wyntleshouere alias de Wyndeshouere in the precinct of the manor (in precincto manerio) of Stanwelle, rendering 40s. yearly. Heir as first above, aged 24.
SURREY; HUNDRED OF FARNHAM.	Inq. made at Guldeford on Tuesday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 27 Edw. I.
	Twangham. The manor (extent given with names of free tenants) held of the bishop of Winchester by service of 1/8 knight’s fee, and rendering him 11s. 4d. (yearly); and 13a. held of the abbot of Certes[e] rendering 6d. Heir as first above.
SURREY; HUNDRED OF COPPEDETHORN.	Inq. Thursday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 27 Edw. I.
	Cudeford. 535.	ROGER LE SAUVAGE of the Peak alias of Steynesby.

SURREY.	Inq. 28 April, 27 Edw. I (defective).
	Gomushulve, Gumshulve alias Gumeshulve. The manor (full extent given with names of sokmen) held of William de Breuhouse by service of 1/20 knight’s fee. John his son, aged 20 (?), is his next heir. Endorsed: Before the Treasurer &c. of the exchequer and the king’s council. In the parliament at Lincoln on the octave of St. Hilary, 29 [Edw. I] at the suit of William de Brewose and John le Savage, it was answered that whereas it was found by the inquisitions &c. that Roger le Sauvage held the manor of Staynesby of the king in chief by service of a sore sparrow-hawk, by which service no wardship pertains to the king, and that he held the manor of Gumschell of William de Brewose by knight’s service; therefore let the king’s hand be removed from the manor of Gumschell and let the issues be surrendered, let the manor of Staynesby be restored to the said John son and heir of the said Roger, with all the issues &c., he first doing fealty to the king, and let the king have reasonable relief.

DERBY.	Inq. made at Cestrfoul on Saturday after St. Augustine, 27 Edw. I.
	Steynesby. The manor (extent given), including a park, held of the king in chief by service of a sore sparrow-hawk, to be rendered at the king’s exchequer. He held no other tenements in the county. Heir as above, aged 19 at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist next. Petition from William de Breuse, showing that whereas Roger le Savage held the manor of Gumeshulve, co. Surrey, of him by knight’s service, and the manor of Steynesby, co. Derby, of the king by service of a sore sparrow-hawk, he has been ousted by the escheator from the wardship of the manor of Gumeshulve, whereof he prays remedy. (French, undated.) Endorsed:—Answer appears on the back of the inquisition. Petition from John, son and heir of Roger le Sauvage, for seisin of his manor of Staynesby, which he holds of the king by service of a sore sparrow-hawk, whereby no wardship pertains to the king, together with the issues &c. (French, undated.) Endorsed:—Answer appears on the back of the inquisition.
	Writ to the Treasurer &c. of the exchequer, transmitting the inquisitions made concerning the lands &c. of Roger le Sauvage, deceased, and commanding them to examine the same and the rolls and memoranda of the exchequer, and certify if the marriage of the heir and wardship of the lands &c. ought to pertain to the king, 17 Sept. 27 Edw. I.
	Return:—In the rolls of the exchequer it is found amongst the serjeanties &c. that William son of Walklin held the manor of Staynesby rendering a sore sparrow-hawk, of the gift of king Henry; also in Originalia, 37 of king Henry, it is found that Robert le Sauvage rendered to John his son all the lands &c. which he held of the king in chief, the king took the said John’s homage, and the sheriff of Derby was commanded to take security for his relief; also in the account of the king’s escheator, 3 Edw. I. it is found that he did not answer for the issues of the manor of Staynesby, because he had rendered the manor to Hawis, late the wife of John le Savage by the king’s writ containing that the king understood by inquisition that the said John held that manor of the king by socage, rendering a sore sparrow-hawk, and held nothing else of the king &c., and that the said Hawis claimed wardship of the heirs &c. as next (friend), which was committed to her saving to the king the marriage of the heirs. Endorsed: Afterwards at the parliament at Lincoln on the octave of St. Hilary, 29 [Edw. I] …… answer to the petitions of William de Breouse and John le Sauvage (was made) as appears on the back of the inquisition.

The manor (very full extent given with names of tenants), including a wind-mill by Sakereslund and another at ‘le Rusesfeld,’ and tenements called Littlehaweoutgong and ‘le Qwiteknicht,’ held of the king in chief by service of 5 knights’ fees, and 17s. 4d. yearly for the guard of the castle of Norwich.
