SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Blibourgh, Monday after Ascension day, 50 Edward III.
Wathe. The manor, held of the king in chief in free socage by service of rendering 4s. yearly of blanch farm at the king’s castle of Norwich.
Somerleton. The manor, with the advowson of the church thereof and the advowson of the church of Bradewell, held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of Mary Seynt Poal, countess of Pembroke, by service of 20s. yearly in free socage.
Horham. The manor, with the advowson of the church thereof, held jointly as above of William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, by knight’s service.
He died on Monday before the Annunciation last. John his son, aged 12 years at the Annunciation last, is his heir.

Middelton. A toft, 25a. arable, 1a. meadow, 3 1/2a. wood and 19s. rent, held of the bishop of Winchester, as of his manor of Drokenesford, in right of his church, by service of a third part of 32s. 8d. yearly rent and a third part of a quarter of wheat yearly called ‘cherchet,’ and also by ploughing a third part of 4a. of land as ‘beynhurth’ and giving pannage of pigs for his men.

He held the following by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Margaret his first wife:—
Herehethe (Erthe). A messuage, 109a. arable and 20a. meadow of gavelkind tenure, held of the earl of March, as of his manor of Herehethe, by service of 43s. yearly. The meadow is worth nothing because it is flooded by the Thames.
57a. arable, held of the same earl by knight’s service.
10a. wood, worth nothing because cut every year at the proper time (seisonam) for the repair of the wall of the Thames, held of the same earl in gavelkind.
3a. meadow of gavelkind tenure, worth nothing because flooded, held of the same earl.
26a. arable of gavelkind tenure, held of Thomas Seynt Jon, knight, by service of 15s. 10d. yearly and other services unknown.

Milstede. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee, to her and the said Thomas, her late husband, and the heirs of their bodies.
She died on 3 September last. Edmund son of the said Thomas and Emmeline, aged 3 years and more, is their heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at Houdan, Saturday the eve of the Holy Trinity, 50 Edward III.
Spaldyngton. Lands worth 13s. 4d. yearly, held of the heir of the baron of Graystok, late a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service; a messuage, 2 cottages and a carucate of land, held of John Haye of Aghton by knight’s service and charged with 8 marks yearly in favour of William Boteler; and a messuage and a carucate of land, held of William Dayvill of Birlonde by service of 40s. yearly. Ever since his death Walter Frost has taken the profits of the lands held of the said heir by the king’s grant, and John Haye and William Dayvill have had possession of the lands held of them.
He died on the eve of St. James the Apostle, 43 Edward III. Peter del Hay, his son, aged 21 years at the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra last, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. (indented) taken at Cawode, 6 October, 50 Edward III.
Cawode. A messuage and 2a. land, held of the king in chief as parcel of the king’s serjeanty of Cawode by service of 2d. yearly.
He died on 8 February, 27 Edward III. Richard his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir. Immediately after his death the premises were seized into the king’s hand by the escheator, and so remain; and answer has been made to the king for the issues.

261. WILLIAM DE HUNTYNGFELD, knight.
Writ, 20 November, 50 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Wytham, 6 December, 50 Edward III.
Mokelyngton. The manor, held by parcels of the respective heirs of John Filiol, John Fitz Walter, Thomas de Ponyngges, John de Haudelo, Robert Visdelew, Thomas atte Merssch, John de Ultyng, Thomas Fabel and John de Crok, services not known. Long before his death the said William enfeoffed thereof John de Stykeford and John de Lynstede, clerks, Richard Fraunceys of Tathewell, John Bate of Kirketon and Thomas son of Robert de Toft; and afterwards, by a fine levied at Westminster in the octave of Hilary, 48 Edward III, between the said feoffees, querents, and the said Sir William, deforciant, the manor was settled on him for life, with reversion to them and the heirs of John Bate. Afterwards John de Stykeford, John Bate and Thomas son of Robert de Toft released their right therein to the other two feoffees, who by a fine levied at Westminster in a month from Michaelmas, 48 Edward III, between William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, querent, and themselves, deforciants, conveyed the said reversion to the earl for life, with successive remainders in tail male to Thomas, William and Edward, his sons, and with ultimate remainder to his right heirs. William de Huntyngfeld attorned to the earl by virtue of the said fine. The said Thomas, William and Edward are dead without heirs male of their bodies. William de Huntyngfeld held the manor for life at the time of his death, the reversion belonging to the earl.
He died on Sunday after St. Martin in the Winter last. Alice late the wife of John de Norwico, knight, of co. Cambridge, aged 30 years and more, is his kinswoman and heir.
Writ, 20 November, 50 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Swafham Market, Monday the feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin, 50 Edward III.
Estbradenham. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. It was settled and conveyed as above (Mokelyngton manor).

SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Huntyngfeld, Friday before St. Nicholas, 50 Edward III.
Huntyngfeld. The manor, with the advowson of its church.
Bengges. The manor and the advowson of the church of Petristre.
All held of William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, as of the honor of Eye, by service of 7 knights’ fees and 11s. for ward of the castle of the said honor.
Mendham. The manor and the advowson of the priory, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of 10s. yearly for ward.
Cokeleye. The advowson of the church.
All the above were settled on the said William for life, with reversion to his feoffees, by the above fine of the octave of Hilary, 48 Edward III; and subsequently the reversion of the manor of Huntyngfeld and the advowsons of the churches of Huntyngfeld and Cokeleye and of the priory of Mendham was settled on the earl of Suffolk &c. by the above fine of a month from Michaelmas, 48 Edward III (Essex inquisition). So William died seised of all the premises for life, with remainder of the last named manor and advowsons to the earl as above, and of the residue to his own feoffees.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Swynesheved, Tuesday after St. Andrew, 50 Edward III.
Toft by Freston. The manor, whence a rent of 25s. 1d. is paid to Walter Pedwardyn and …. . for sheriff’s aid.
Frampton and Biker. The manors.
Frampton. The advowson of the church.
All the above are held severally of Walter Pedwardyn, knight, by knight’s service. The said William de Huntyngfeld, long before his death, enfeoffed thereof John de Stikeford and John de Lynsted, clerks, John de Repynghale and Thomas Claymond; and afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Hilary, 47 Edward III, between the said feoffees, querents, and himself, deforciant, he quitclaimed them to the said feoffees and the heirs of John de Repynghale. Afterwards the said John by his writing released his right therein to the other three feoffees, who by their writing granted the premises to the said William for life, with remainder for life to Margery late the wife of John his son, and with ultimate remainder to the said three feoffees and their heirs. John de Stikeford then released his right to the remaining two feoffees, who by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 48 Edward III, conveyed the reversion of the premises after the deaths of the said William and Margery to William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, for life, with successive remainders in tail male to Thomas, William and Edward, his sons, and with remainder over to his right heirs. By virtue of the said fine William de Huntyngfeld attorned to the said earl, and by virtue of the above feoffment and grants all the tenants of the manors duly attorned. The earl’s said sons are dead without heirs male of their bodies. The said Margery is now married to Stephen le Scrop, knight.
Pynchebek. The manor called ‘Russell maner,’ held of Walter Pedwardyn, knight, by knight’s service, and not as parcel of any other manor; and 40a. land and 20s. rent, held of the same Walter, services not known. The said William enfeoffed thereof John de Stikeford, John de Lynsted and Thomas Home, clerks, and Thomas Claymond, to whom all the tenants duly attorned. Afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Hilary, 47 Edward III, he quitclaimed them to the said feoffees and the heirs of Thomas Horne. John de Stikeford and Thomas Horne by their writings released their right to the other two feoffees, who by their writing granted the premises to the said William for life, with reversion to themselves and their heirs. Afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 48 Edward III, they granted the said reversion to the earl of Suffolk for life, with successive remainders as above.
Toft. The manor called ‘Hiptoft halle,’ held of Walter de Pedwardyn, knight, by knight’s service.
Toft and Freston. 36a. land and 4a. meadow, held of Sir Thomas de Roos of Hamelak, as the jurors understand, service not known.
John de Hagh was seised of both the above items in his demesne as of fee, and granted them to William de Huntyngfeld, knight, for life, with remainder to John de Lynsted, clerk, for life, and with reversion to himself and his heirs. All the tenants attorned in due form. Afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Hilary, 47 (?) Edward III, he granted the reversion of the premises after the death of the said William and John de Lynsted to the earl of Suffolk for life, with remainders as above.

Bokesworth. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held for life by grant of William de Spaygne of Boston, John Lynsted, parson of Causton, Thomas Horne, parson of Huntyngfeld, and Richard Wright of Holbeche, clerk, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, with remainder after his death to John Knyvet, knight, and Eleanor, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and with remainder over to his own right heirs. The manor and advowson are held of the king in chief by knight’s service, other services not known.

Writ to the escheator to send into Chancery the inquisitions lately taken by him ex officio touching a third part of a fourth part of the manor of Ravenston. 16 January, 50 Edward III.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken ex officio at Neweportpaynel, Saturday the feast of St. Nicholas, 50 Edward III.
Raveneston. The said Joan, who held by hereditary right a third part of a fourth part of the manor, as of the manor of Whitcherch, by knight’s service and suit to the court of the said manor every three weeks, died in 45 Edward III, day not known. During her lifetime she gave the said third part to John Cave, Adam, vicar of Raveneston, and John Wicombe, in fee simple, whether fraudulently or not the jurors know not. The said Thomas Bosyate, who held a second third part (secundam partem tercie partis) of a fourth part of the manor by the like service by the courtesy of England after the death of Elizabeth his wife, died in 49 Edward III, day not known. After his death his share fell to Thomas son of the said Joan, now aged 8 years and more, as kinsman and heir of the said Elizabeth.

He died while a minor in the king’s wardship on Thursday in the second week of Lent last. Joan his sister, aged 13 years and more, is his heir.

He died on Saturday after St. John before the Latin Gate last. Beatrice Langele, his daughter, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

266. ROBERT DE LANGELE.
Writ of precipimus, 30 May, 50 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 11 June, 50 Edward III.
He died on 2 October, 22 Edward III, seised of:—
Parish of St. Sepulchre without Neugate. A tenement worth 20s. yearly. By his testament proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London for pleas of land held on Monday after St. Edmund the King, 22 Edward III, by the name of Robert de Langele, citizen and butcher of London, he bequeathed the said tenement, after the death of Edmund de Ware, butcher, then dwelling therein, to Joan his daughter and Walter Nettleswell, her husband, and the heirs of their bodies. Walter and Joan were seised thereof accordingly, and Joan died in 35 Edward III, day not known, without heir of her body. Afterwards the said Walter had possession of the tenement and received the issues thereof until Saturday after St. John before the Latin Gate last, when he died. Since his death Edith his wife has had possession and received the issues without lawful title.
[Parish not specified]. A shop opposite the gate of the Friars Minors. By his said testament he bequeathed it, by the name of his shop which he acquired from Henry le Bokeler and Joan his wife and wherein Adam le Spicer dwelt, to Robert his son, who had possession until the Purification, 23 Edward III, when he granted it by charter to Robert de Huntyngdon, citizen and butcher of London, and his heirs. Robert de Huntyngdon gave it to Walter de Nettleswell, alias Langelee, citizen and butcher of London, and his heirs. Afterwards, by a charter dated on Tuesday the feast of St. Matthias, 40 Edward III, the said Walter gave it to Richard Stonham, citizen and butcher of London, and Margery his wife, who held it and received the issues until Tuesday after Michaelmas, 44 Edward III, when they gave it by charter to John Wancy, citizen and girdler of London, and Juliana his wife, and their heirs. The said John and Juliana are now in possession.
All the premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
Robert de Langele has no heirs now surviving, so far as the jurors can ascertain at present.

Writ of precipimus, 28 May, 50 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. taken at Sydyngbourne, Tuesday after St. Peter’s Chains, 50 Edward III.
Bradgare. 38a. land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Milstede. 16s. yearly rent, parcel of the manor, which manor is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Long before his death he acquired the said rent without the king’s licence from Thomas de Hogshawe, knight, and alienated it without the king’s licence to Adam Daubour, Thomas Brigham, Elisha Cole and Simon de Berowe, and their heirs, conditions unknown, but the tenants never attorned to the said feoffees during John’s life.
Bikenore. 80a. land, 20a. wood and 8s. rent in the manor, held of Sir Luke de Ponyngges, as of his wife’s right, by knight’s service.
He died on the feast of St. James, 46 Edward III. Joan his daughter, aged 4 years and more, is his heir.
The said Elisha Cole had possession of the premises from the time of John’s death until Michaelmas following, since when John Kelsham has had possession, by what title the jurors know not.

KENT. Inq. taken at Rochester, Monday before St. Matthew, 50 Edward III.
Bradgare. 74a. arable, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; and 4s. rent of divers tenants, held of the king in chief.
Bradgare, Milton and Bordenne. 24 quarters of palm-barley, called ‘fermebere,’ issuing from divers lands of gavelkind tenure.
Bradgare. 16s. rent of divers tenants, parcel of the manor of Milstede, which manor and rent are held of the king in chief.
Bykenore. The manor (extent given), held of Sir Luke de Ponyngges, knight, as of his wife’s right.
Long before his death he divested himself of all the premises in favour of Adam Daubour and others (as above), on condition that they should enfeoff Joan his daughter and heir thereof when she should come of age, and should meanwhile answer to her for all the profits thereof. Thus the feoffment was colourably made to deprive the king and other lords of the wardship and marriage of the heir. The tenants never attorned to the feoffees.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Fakenham, Saturday the feast of St. Lucy, 50 Edward III.
Keteleston. 15a. arable and 2a. meadow, held of the king in chief by serjeanty, rendering 12d. yearly to Norwich castle.
Little Snoryng. 15a. land, held of Thomas de Felton, knight, services not known.
He died on Saturday after the Annunciation, 49 Edward III. Margaret daughter of William de Milham his brother, aged 16 years and more, is his next heir. She is married to Nicholas atte Chirche.
Since George’s death the lands in Keteleston have been in the possession of Richard de Waterden, late escheator, and John Rokewode, now escheator, who have answered for the profits in the Exchequer, because it was found by an inquisition taken ex officio before the said Richard that George died seised of them and that they are held of the king as above; but no one has had possession of the lands in Little Snoryng.

He died on 12 November last. Alice his daughter, aged 25 years and more, wife of Walter Frome, by whom she has no issue, is his heir.

Hyntes. Two-thirds of the manor, held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of Robert, bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, by knight’s service, by gift and feoffment of Hugh de Meynill, knight, to the said Richard and Joan and the heirs of their bodies.
Kyngesleye. The manor, held jointly with Joan his wife for their lives, with remainder to William his son for life, and with ultimate remainder to his right heirs, by gift and feoffment of Hugh in the Lane, parson of Langeley, and Richard Biroun. The manor is held of the lord de Furnivale by knight’s service.
He died on 10 February last. Ralph his son by the said Joan, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.
Writ, 15 February, 50 Edward III.
WARWICK. Inq. (indented) made at Atherston, Tuesday before St. Gregory, 50 Edward III.
Kynges Neuton. Two-thirds of a moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, with the reversion of the other third part of the said moiety expectant on the demise of Hawise late the wife of Hugh de Meynell, who holds it in dower, and with the advowson of the church at every other turn, starting with the second presentation from now.

LEICESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Leycestre, Thursday before the Annunciation, 50 Edward III.
Burton Noverey and Upton. The manors, held of Henry de Ferrariis of Groby, a minor in the king’s wardship. Long before his death the said Richard enfeoffed thereof Richard de Bevercotes, Richard Byroun, Hugh in the Lane, parson of Longeleye, William othe Lee and Thomas de Hyntes, and their heirs.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Langeleye Meynill, Saturday after St. Matthew, 50 Edward III.
Langeleye Meynill. The manor, held of Ralph de Ry by knight’s service, except 6 bovates of land which are held of Robert Twyford by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. yearly.
Yiveleye. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Holynton. A carucate of land, held of the same duke, services not known.
All the above he held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, for their lives, by gift and feoffment of Hugh in the Lone, parson of Langeleye, and Richard Byron, with remainder of the manor of Langeleye to his right heirs, and of the rest of the premises to William his son, for life, and then to his own right heirs.

YORK. Inq. taken at Thresk, 14 January, 49 Edward III.
Thresk. The manor (extent given), held for her life of the king in chief by knight’s service, except the site thereof, a garden called ‘Castelgarth,’ the park of Thresk and 14l. 10s. yearly rent, which Ralph Basset, knight, holds in wardship, by the king’s grant, of the inheritance of John son and heir of John de Moubray of Axiholm, to whom the reversion of the manor belongs after her death. The extent includes a common oven, a market every Monday, and a fair on the feast of St. Laurence.
Kirkebymalasart. The manor (extent given), held in like manner, except the site thereof, a warren and a wood called ‘Bagwyth,’ which Ralph Basset holds as above. The extent includes pastures called ‘Angrome’ and ‘Staynmore.’
Burton in Lonesdale. The manor (extent given), held in like manner, except the site thereof and the parks. The extent includes a piece of land called ‘le Rodedales,’ a pasture called ‘Apiltrethwayt,’ an office called ‘barounbayliff,’ a market, a fair, and a rent called ‘burghessilver.’
Joan late the wife of Roger de Weston receives a yearly rent of 20 marks out of the manors of Thresk and Kirkebymalasart by grant of John de Moubray of Axiholm, father of John de Moubray, deceased, to her and the said Roger for their lives. Blanche de Ponyngges receives 42s. yearly from the manor of Thresk. The prior of Newburgh receives 5s. yearly from the same manor, and 20s. yearly from the manor of Kirkebymalasart, as he and his predecessors have done from time immemorial. William de Nesfeld receives 6l. yearly for life from the manor of Kirkebymalasart by grant of John de Moubray, lord of the island of Axiholm, with the king’s licence. The said John granted to Cuthbert Capoun for life a rent of 8 marks yearly out of the manors of Thresk and Kirkebymalasart, to wit, 5 marks out of the manor of Thresk and 3 marks out of that of Kirkebymalasart; Cuthbert granted his life estate therein to Ralph Pygot, knight; and Ralph granted the same to William de Nesfeld; but whether these grants were made with the king’s licence or not the jurors know not.
Elizabeth died on the morrow of the Assumption last. The earl of Oxford, her brother, aged 14 years and more, is her next heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Hawens, 16 May, 50 Edward III.
Wyliton. The manor (extent given), held for life by grant of John de Newmerche and others, whether with the king’s licence or not the jurors know not, with remainder to the right heirs of the aforesaid John de Moubray. It is held of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Bedford, by knight’s service and service of 19s. of sheriff’s aid and 13s. 4d. of common fine for a certain view of frankpledge. The extent includes 6l. 6s. 8d. rent of assise of free tenants in Wyliton, Maldon, Kerdyngton, Bromham, Cowpol and Berford, the site of the castle of Bedford with a court held therein and a fishery in the water there, and 2a. meadow in Bydenham; but excludes 155a. wood in the possession of Ralph Basset, knight, as above (last inquisition).
Hawens. The manor, held for life in form aforesaid of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Bedford, by knight’s service. The park is held by Ralph Basset, as above.
Stotfold. The manor, held for life in form aforesaid of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Bedford, by knight’s service and service of 10s. 6d. yearly as ‘hedborghsilvere.’ It is worth 13l. 6s. 8d. yearly exclusive of a rent of 40s. which the prior of Newenham used to render thereto.
She died about the feast of the Assumption last, day not known. John son of the aforesaid John de Moubray, aged 16 years by estimation and in the king’s wardship, is next heir to the said manors.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Lynchelade, 15 May, 50 Edward III.
Lynchelade. Divers lands, rents and services, with the liberty of a court, held for life as above (manor of Wyliton), of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Bedford, by knight’s service and service of 11s. 4d. yearly for hidage and ‘beuplee.’

A messuage, 80a land and 5s. rent, held of the heiresses of the earl of Atholl, minors in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Holkham, by service of half a knight’s fee and 4s. rent; and 40a. land, held of John, duke of Lancaster, as of his manor of Whyton, of the priors of Walsyngham and Petirston, of the abbot of Creyk, of John Andrew, of John Holkham, and of Robert Galoun, by a yearly rent of 5s. 8 1/2d.
Wesenham. A messuage called ‘Kypton,’ 80a. land and 40s. rent, held of John duke of Brittany by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and 5s. for ward of the castle; and 80a. land, held of Edmund de Thorp, Roger Scales, and Hugh Hastyngges, knights, the prioress of Blakeberwe, and the heirs of Thomas Beaupre, knight, as of the manor of Wesenham, by a yearly rent of 7s.
He died on Thursday the eve of St. James last. Margaret and Mary, his sisters, aged respectively 24 years and 12 years and more, are his heirs.

He died on Monday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 37 Edward III. Margery his daughter, aged 18 years and more, is his heir.
Since his death Alesia late the wife of Thomas de Nerford has had possession of the premises and received the issues, by what title the jurors know not.
SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Halesworth, Tuesday after St. Dunstan, 50 Edward III.
Wysete. 12 1/2 knights’ fees, held in service as parcel of the manor, which manor, with the said fees, is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.

Perham. The manor, held by Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, by service of 5 1/2 knights’ fees. On Robert’s death it descended to William de Ufford, now earl, as his son and heir, who is of full age and owes relief.
Braunfeld. The manor, held by John de Norwico, the elder, knight, by service of 5 knights’ fees. On his death it descended to John son of Walter de Norwico, who was a minor in the king’s wardship and owed relief on coming of age.
Barsham. The manor, held by Denise de Ty for life by service of one knight’s fee. On her death it descended to Robert de Ty, her next heir, who is of full age and owes relief.
Soham Barres. The manor, held for life by Mary, late countess Marshal, of the inheritance of Joan late the wife of William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, by service of a moiety of two knights’ fees. On Mary’s death it descended to the said Joan, then a minor in the king’s wardship, as her share as one of the heirs of Thomas de Brotherton, and she owed relief on coming of age.

Netherorton. A messuage, a toft, 2 1/2 virgates of land, and 10s. 10 1/2d. rent, with a third part of a toft and of 1/2 virgate of land, held of the king in chief by service of bearing a pennon before the footmen of the hundred of Wotton in the king’s army within the realm of England, and rendering to the king 13s. 4d. yearly by the hands of the sheriff. Christiana late the wife of William Page, his father, receives 3s. 4d. yearly therefrom as her dower.
Whelcombegrove. A messuage and a virgate of land, which were parcel of the manor of Barton Sent John, held of the king in chief by service of a hundredth part of a knight’s fee.
