RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Wissenden, Saturday before Mid-Lent, 29 Edward III.
Wissenden. A third part of a manor (extent given) held in dower of the inheritance of John de Wittelbury, late her husband, of the king in chief as of the manor of Huntyngdon, viz. of the pourparty of Robert de Brus, which is in the king’s hand by the forfeiture of the said Robert, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a chief messuage of which the buildings are very ruinous; 44a. arable, of which 30 can be sown yearly, and are worth 3d. an acre and no more since the time of the pestilence through the paucity of labourers; 5a. meadow, worth 4d. an acre yearly and no more, because the meadow is watery and inundated and the whole of the hay there is frequently carried away by floods; 1a. meadow at Estmore, which is held of the prior of St. Andrew’s, York, by no service however so far as is known; a pasture called Perotmessh held of John de Haryngton by service of 1d.; 4a. pasture in le Westmerssh held of the same John by service of 1d.; and the third part of a windmill worth nothing beyond the miller’s stipend.
She held no other lands &c. in the county in dower.
She died on Monday before the Epiphany last. John, son of Aubrey de Wittelbury, aged 21 years on the feast of St. Margaret last, is her heir.

Tycchefeld. A liberty called ‘Crofton’ within the hundred, held of the earl of Rychemond, service not known.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Nottingham, Monday after St. John before the Latin Gate, 29 Edward III.
Willay. The whole soil of the hay within the forest of Schirwod held of the king in chief by service of 10l. yearly.
He held no more tenements in cos. Nottingham and Derby.
He died on Monday after St. Laurence, 28 Edward III. Thomas de Metham his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 9 May, 29 Edward III.
Metham. The manor (extent given), including 8a. meadow in Houeden and a ferry across the river Ouse, held of the bishop of Durham by fealty and by service of rendering 30l. 11s. yearly.
Thornore. Two parts of two parts of the manor (extent given) which, together with the residue of the manor, which Isabel, late the wife of Simon de la Roche, and Alice, late the wife of Simon son of Simon de la Roche, hold in dower of the inheritance of the deceased, are held of Henry, duke of Lancaster, by knight’s service.
Mar. The manor (extent given) held of John de Tibtoft by fealty and by service of 12d. yearly.
Polyngton. A moiety of the manor (extent given, including a close called ‘le Park’ without deer) held of Henry, duke of Lancaster, by fealty and by service of 26s. 8d. yearly.
Northcave. A messuage and a carucate of land held of John del Haye by fealty.
Birsay. Tenements held of John de Hothom by service of 1d. yearly and by fealty.
He held no other lands in the county on the day he died, but formerly he was seised of certain tenements in Hirst Courtenay and Laxton by Metham, which, a year and more before his death, he gave to Thomas de Metham, knight, his son, who survives, and his heirs, and the said son still holds them. The said tenements in Laxton are held of the bishop of Durham by fealty and by service of 13s. 4d. yearly. The said tenements in Hirst Courteney are held of Henry, duke of Lancaster, by fealty only.

Mydelton Lyllebon. The manor held of John de Nevylle of Essex in chief by knight’s service.
He died on 16 June, 22 Edward III. John his son, aged 12 years and more, is his next heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Belford, 10 April, 29 Edward III.
Belford. A moiety of the manor, with a moiety of the hamlet of Yesyngton in the same manor (extents given), held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee. The extent includes three lands called ‘le Brenlandis,’ 50a. wood, rent from a land called ‘le Pleissis’ and rents from the lands of John Bate, John de Heltale and John Hauberger.
Wolloure. Three burgages in the town and 40s. rent there.
Shaweden. The manor (extent given) held of John de Monte Acuto, knight, as parcel of his barony of Werk upon Tweed, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee and rendering yearly to him for the ward of his castle of Werk 20s. and to the king 2s. at his exchequer of the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne, by the hands of the sheriff, for the custom called ‘Forissilvere,’ 19d. by the hands of the sheriff for the custom called cornage, and 10s. for a custom called ‘forestsilver’; also to the hospital of Bolton a yearly rent of 100s.
Glanton. Six husband lands and a water-mill, parcel of the manor of Shaweden.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Stene, Thursday in Easter week, 29 Edward III.
Stene and Farnyngho. The manors (extents given), with the advowson of the church of Stene, held for his life of the gift of Baldwin de Mohunt, clerk, and Robert de Brightewell, clerk, by fine levied at Westminster on the quinzaine of Easter, 22 Edward III, with remainder to John his son and Eleanor de Arundell, now dead, daughter of Richard, earl of Arundell, and the heirs of the bodies of the said John and Eleanor; with further remainders to the heirs of the body of the said John, and to Baldwin his brother and the heirs male of his body.
Stene. The manor is held in chief by knight’s service of the fee of Pynkenye, which was in the hand of John de Molyns at the time of the levying of the said fine. The extent includes a mill called ‘Clapke.’
Farnyngho. The manor (extent given) is held of John de Insula of Rougemont by knight’s service.
Neubotle. The manor (extent given, including a mill called ‘Clatke’) held for life of the demise of Richard de Grey, knight, whose heir is John de Grey of Codenore; it is held of Henry, duke of Lancaster, as of the honour of Leicester, by knight’s service.
He died on Friday before the feast of St. Michael last. Joan, late the wife of Gilbert de Ellesworth (sic), and Agnes, wife of John Mautravers, and Margaret, late the wife of James de Audele, sisters of the said Edmund, all aged 40 years and more, are his heirs.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Meysham, Wednesday after Holy Trinity, 29 Edward III.
Meysham. The manor (extent given) held for his life of Isabella, queen of England, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, with remainder to John de Berford and Eleanor his wife by fine levied in the king’s court. The extent includes a weekly market on Tuesday.
Date of death as above. Joan de Ellesfeld, John de Mautravers and Agnes his wife and Margaret de Audeley, of full age, are his heirs.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Clopcote, 7 May, 29 Edward III.
Clopcote and West Wittenham. Twenty messuages, three tofts, two carucates and twelve virgates of land, 24a. meadow, 8a. pasture, 24s. rent of the ferry across the river Thames, and a fishery in the river held of Sir Edward, prince of Wales and duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Walingford, by service of half a knight’s fee, of the gift of Philip de Englefeld, knight, by fine levied in 16 Edward III, to the deceased and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Margaret, countess of Herford, for her life, with further remainders to John de Bereford and the heirs of his body.

Derset. Two parts of the manor (extent given) held for life by demise of John de Suydle the elder by a fine with the king’s licence, with remainder to John, son of Bartholomew de Suydle, and Eleanor his wife who survives, and the heirs of their bodies, tenure not specified.
Shoteswelle, Langele and Wisshawe. The manors, with the hamlet of Stonythorp, held for life of others than the king, services not specified, with remainder to John de Bereford who survives, and the heirs of his body.

Hobrugge in Wytham. The manor held jointly as in the last, of the gift of the same John and William by fine levied in the king’s court, of Richard de Plays by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died on Saturday after Michaelmas last. John, son of the said John Talbot and Juliana, aged 19 years and more, is his heir.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken in the castle of Hereford, Saturday after St. Martin, 29 Edward III.
Richard’s Castle (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held jointly by the deceased and Juliana his wife.

Richard’s Castle. Peter Eylriche, four parts of a knight’s fee; John de Strete, four parts of a knight’s fee.
Pudlesdon. John Gour, half a knight’s fee.
Blethewagh. The manor (extent given)in the cantred of Meleneth, held jointly as above of the king in chief.

Wolferton. Six messuages, four carucates of land, 1 1/2a. meadow, held jointly with Juliana his wife and the heirs of their bodies, of the gift of John de Wotton and William Balle, as parcel of the manor of Richard’s Castle.
Overton and Bachecote. 80a. wood held jointly with the said Juliana as parcel of the manor of Richard’s Castle.
Overton, Bachecote, Hull and Wolferton. 40s. rent of free tenants, held jointly with the said Juliana as parcel of the manor of Richards Castle.
Boreford The prebend of a portion of the church held jointly with the said Juliana of the king.
He died on the feast of St. Matthias last. John his son, aged 19 years at the Invention of the Holy Cross last, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, Monday in the third week of Lent, 29 Edward III.
Killyngwyk by Watton. A fourth part of the manor held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee and by homage.
He had no other lands &c. in his demesne as of fee in the county.
Ryth in Swaldale. The manor held jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives, of Sir John de Gandavo, earl of Richemond, by knight’s service, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Peter de Malo Lacu, ‘le quart’ the elder and his heirs.
Seton. The manor held jointly as above of Sir John Darcy as of the fee sometime of Peter de Bruys, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Mulgrove. The castle and manor and the manors of Eggeton, Bridesale, Baynton, Lith and Nessyngwyk, the town of Donecastre and five mills with the fishery of the water there, and the great mill of Rosington with the fishery of the water there, with the knights’ fees, advowsons of churches &c. thereto belonging, held jointly as above by grant of John de Malo Lacu of the king rendering yearly to Peter de Malo Lacu the elder, lately deceased, during his life 300 marks, with remainder to the said Peter the elder and his heirs.

Bergh. The manor, which William del Wodehall and Beatrice his wife hold for their lives.
Hexthorp and Balby. The manors, which Robert de Malo Lacu holds for his life.
Rosyngton. The manor, except the fishery and stew there, which the said Robert and Joan his wife hold for their lives.
Skynthorp. The manor which Henry le Bower holds for his life.
Leterigg. A messuage and a carucate of land which William son of Thomas and Agnes his wife hold for the life of the said Agnes.
Wolfnedaleside. Two messuages and 40a. land which William Usscher holds for his life.
‘Sletholm.’ A messuage and a carucate of land so called, which Adam de Ellerby holds for his life.
Lith. A messuage and eight bovates of land which William de Hilderwell and Anne his wife hold for their lives.
Eggeton. A messuage and a carucate of land which Alan Pecche and Agnes his wife hold for their lives; a messuage and a carucate of land which Robert de Lelom holds for his life; two messuages and a carucate of land which Maud Rodde holds for her life.
Rouceby. A toft and 12a. land which Thomas Hervy holds for his life.
Eggeton. A messuage and a carucate of land which William de Brocton holds for his life.
Rosyngton. A messuage and 8a. land which John de Houton holds for his life.
Skendelby, co. Lincoln. A third part of the manor which Aline de Furnivall holds for her life.
Iwardby, co. Lincoln. A moiety of the manor which Gilbert de Carthorp holds for his life.
These reversions belonging to the aforesaid John de Malo Lacu were granted by him to the deceased and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the aforesaid Peter the elder and his heirs, under the king’s charter of licence, dated 27 June, 1 Edward III.
Lokyngton, Etton and Bramham. The manors and the advowson of the church of Lokyngton held jointly with the said Margaret his wife of the grant of Peter de Malo Lacu the elder, to them and the heirs of their bodies in form aforesaid by the king’s charter of licence, dated 16 April, 15 Edward III.
The castle and manor of Mulgrove and following tenements held in demesne and reversion are held of the king in chief as of the crown by homage and by service of two and a quarter knights’ fees and by doing suit at the county of York every six weeks. There are no knights’ fees belonging to the manor of Killingwyk.
The deceased held no other knights’ fees in the county of York, except those pertaining to the castle and manor of Mulgreve, the manors of Eggeton, Briddesale, Baynton, Lith, Nessingwik, Lokyngton and Bramham, which said fees are held of him and Margaret his wife by knight’s service, number of fees not known.
He died on 18 January last. Peter de Malo Lacu, ‘le Sisme,’ knight, son of the said Peter and Margaret, aged 24 years and more, is his heir. The said Margaret, immediately after the death of the deceased, her husband, took the mantle, veil and ring before the suffragan of the archbishop of York and swore and vowed chastity before him and many others, to live chastely without a husband all her life.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Iwardeby on Palm Sunday, 29 Edward III.
Iwardeby. A moiety of a manor, 50a. land, 10a. meadow and 40s. yearly rent held of the prioress of Grâce Dieu (de Gracia Dei) by service of 5s. 4d. yearly.
He died on Monday the feast of St. German last. Peter his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

253. BARTHOLOMEW DE BURGHERSSH THE ELDER.
Writ, 6 August, 29 Edward III.
RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Ryhale, 10 August, 29 Edward III.
Ryhale. The manor held by the assignment of John, late earl of Kent, as his fee to be received yearly from the said earl during his pleasure. The manor came into the hands of Thomas de Holande and Joan his wife, sister and heir of the said earl, as of the inheritance of the said Joan, who is of full age, and they assigned it to the said Bartholomew, to hold by way of his fee receivable from them during their pleasure, so that the heirs of the said Bartholomew could have no (fn. 1) right or claim to the said manor. It is held of the king, service not known.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 3 August last.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Clopham, Monday the feast of St. Matthew, 29 Edward III.
Clopham. The manor held of the prince, the duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Walyngford, by service of a knight’s fee and suit of court at the castle of Walyngford every month.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Sunday after St. Peter’s Chains last. Bartholomew de Burgherssh his son, aged 26 years, is his heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Steuecle, Monday before SS. Simon and Jude, 29 Edward III.
Steuicle. The manor held for his life by demise of Gilbert de Clare, late earl of Gloucester, and held by the earl of the king in chief, except two crofts, two and a half virgates of land and two cottages which are held of Sir Edward the prince, as of the honour of Walyngford, service not known. The reversion of the manor belongs to Ralph, earl of Stafford, to hold for his life by the law of England.
He died on Wednesday before St. Peter’s Chains.
Endorsed: The manor of Styuecle, in the pourparty of Margaret, late the wife of Hugh de Audele, one of the heirs of Gilbert de Clare, late earl of Gloucester, is extended at 17l.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Everesholt, Wednesday after St. Luke, 29 Edward III.
Stodham. A carucate of land held of Robert de Morle, knight, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
Clopham. The manor held of Sir Edward the prince, duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Wallyngford, by service of a knight’s fee and suit of court at the castle of Wallyngford every month, and is worth 20l. yearly as more fully appears by the above inquisition taken at Clopham.
He died on Wednesday before St. Peter’s Chains last. Heir as in the preceding.

STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Bokennale, Wednesday before All Saints, 29 Edward III.
Bokennale. Two parts of the town and a moiety of the town of Fenton Kelvert held in service, as of the right and inheritance of Elizabeth late his wife, who survives; held of the king in chief as former (ut que fuerunt) parcels of the barony of Alveton.
He held no other lands &c.
He died on Thursday before St. James last. Bartholomew de Burgherssh, of full age, is his heir.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Ancastre, 10 September, 29 Edward III.
Haydor. The manor held of the heir of John de Bello Monte by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county, so far as the jury can ascertain.
He died on 10 August last. Bartholomew de Burgherssh, his son, aged 30 years as they understand, is his next heir.

Horne and Hurle. Tenements called ‘la Byssh’ (extent given) held of the heir of Hugh le Despenser, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Kersalton. Two messuages and 60a. arable held of Walter Vaghan by foreign service, viz. doing homage and fealty and rendering 24s. yearly, as the jury understand.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, Wednesday after St. Matthew, 29 Edward III.

Richard Fish holds a husband land in Stanyngton by demise of the said Philip by service of 2s. yearly, and four husband lands there were worth 40d. each yearly, now nothing, being burnt and destroyed by the Scots. The husband lands in Tranewell are leased to John de Parys by demise of the deceased.

Pokeley Tenements held of the king in chief by homage and by service of a hundredth part of a knight’s fee, viz. a messuage wasted and a carucate of land, waste because taken from the common moor of the town, and a yearly rent of 20s. 11 1/2d. charged on two messuages, a croft and four bovates of land, so that if at any time the said tenements happen to lie waste Sir William de Roos of Hamelak and his heirs must pay the rent from their coffers to the said Thomas and his heirs. The premises were given to the said Thomas and Alice his wife, deceased, and their heirs by William de Roos, grandfather of the present lord of Roos.

Great Wilburgham. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Maud his wife, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies, of the earl of Brittany by service of doing suit every month at the said earl’s court of Badburgham, by gift of Robert de Insula, deceased.
Rampton, Cotenham, Westwyk and Coveneye. The manors held at farm for a term of 30 years, by demise of Alice, daughter of Robert de Insula, and others &c. as Pisshobury, co. Hertford. The manor of Rampton is held of the heirs of John de Burdeleys, as of his manor of Cotenham, by knight’s service; the manor of Cotenham of the bishop of Ely by knight’s service; the manor of Westwyk of the earl of Brittany by knight’s service and by service at the said earl’s tourn twice a year; and the manor of Coveneye of the prior of Ely by knight’s service.

YORK. Inq. taken at Harewod, Saturday in the second week of Lent, 30 Edward III.
Harewod. The manor with its members (extent given) held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee and by rendering 18s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff to the fines of the wapentake of Skirayk. The said members are Carleton, Neuhale, Stokton, Helthwayt and Donkesewyk, and the extent includes 120a. sour (morose) land, a small park with deer, a market every Saturday and a fair on St. Swithin’s day.
Kirkeby Orblawers. He was sometime seised of the manor, but two years and more before his death he gave it to Thomas de Walkefare, knight, for life. The said Thomas survives. It is held of Henry de Percy by knight’s service and by rendering 8s. yearly and doing suit at his court of Spofford every three weeks.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death as in preceding. Robert de Insula, knight, his son, aged 20 years and more, is his heir.
