161. ROBERT WYARD, knight.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Wanteyng, 29 June, 28 Edward III.
Ordeston. A carucate of land held of Gilbert Sotesbrok, knight, by service of 1d. yearly.
Kyngeston Wendesclyve and Chapelwyk. 4l. yearly rent held of John Archer by homage and divers other services (not specified).
The aforesaid land and rent the said Robert gave on Thursday after St. Pancras, 28 Edward III, to John Lanceleve and John atte Hull, chaplains, on condition that they should re-enfeoff him and Joan his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The said John and John still have seisin without transferring their estate to the said Robert or to anyone else. Seven years ago the deceased gave a cottage in Asshebury and two cottages and three virgates of land in Edwyneston to the said John Lanceleve, chaplain, to hold in aid of his maintenance for celebrating masses (divina) for the soul of the said Robert and for the souls of all the faithful departed, as long as he should be able to celebrate, and the said John asserted that he had an estate in the said lands &c. for life for such celebration. The aforesaid tenements are held of the earl of Hereford by service of 2s. yearly rent.
Date of death and heir not known.
Memorandum (undated). Robert Wyard was seised of a messuage and a carucate of land in Ordestone, co. Berks, and 4l. rent in Kyngeston and Chapeswyk, all of which he gave to John Lanceleve and John ate Hull, chaplains, as appears by an inquisition taken before the escheator by a diem clausit extremum on Robert’s death, to the intent that they might re-enfeoff him and the heirs male of his body. He died without heir male and had three daughters under age, who are his heirs. The said chaplains never re-enfeoffed Robert or his heirs, but wish to retain the said messuage, land and rent in their hands during the minority of the said Robert’s heirs, in derogation of the estate of the king, of whom the said Robert held other tenements by knight’s service. The king is seised of the custody of those lands and of the wardship of the heirs aforesaid. Robert Wiard, notwithstanding the feoffment made to the said chaplains, continued his estate in the premises and took the profit and the account of the bailiffs and dismissed the servants and took all the profits and continued such estate until his death, without the said chaplains ever having any profits of the same. It is also found before the escheator that the said Robert, seven years ago, enfeoffed one of the said chaplains for the term of his life, as part of his maintenance, of a messuage and land. The said Robert at that time had nothing in Ordestone or elsewhere, but John Wyard, his father, was seised of all the lands that now are descended to the said Robert’s heirs and was so seised until the year of the pestilence, so that Robert could in no wise enfeoff thereof: wherefore the king has right to the custody, and let a writ be directed to the escheator of Berks to seize the said messuage, land and rent into the king’s hand, so that the heirs aforesaid be not hereafter compelled to sue (autrefoiz mys a lour accioun), nor the king lose the profit of his custody of the lands which the said chaplains, against law and reason, claim to hold by the feoffment aforesaid. Stauntone Harecourt. A manor (extent given, including 20s. for a customary aid yearly, a rent called ‘Churcset,’ and 12a. wood) held of the king in chief by service of keeping a falcon at the king’s costs, viz. receiving 12d. daily for the said custody.
He died on Saturday after St. Barnabas last. Elizabeth, aged 3 years, Margery, aged 2 years, and Joan, aged one year, are his heirs. Margaret his wife is pregnant.

WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Clyfton on Temede, Tuesday before St. Kenelm the King, 28 Edward III.
Cure Wyard. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of the gift of Walter le Deen and John Launceleve, chaplain, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Robert. The manor is held of Geoffrey, son and heir of Richard de Cornewayle, as of the manor of Bereford, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Date of death as above. His daughters, Elizabeth, aged 3 years and more, Isabel, aged 2 years and more, and Juliana, aged one year, are his heirs. Joan his wife is pregnant.

162. JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF RICHARD DE MUSGRAVE, knight.
Writ after the death of the said Joan, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Robert de Clifford, a minor in the king’s wardship. 13 May, 28 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Appelby, 2 July, 28 Edward III.
Crosbygarard. Three parts of the manor held for life of Roger de Clifford, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of 8s. 6 3/4d. yearly for cornage.
Little Musgrave. The manor held for life of the same Roger by service of 11s. 4d. yearly for cornage.
Soulby. A moiety of the manor held for life of Robert de Swynburn, by service of 6s. 8d. yearly for cornage.
All by virtue of a fine between the said Joan and Thomas de Mounteny, sometime her husband, of the one part and Thomas de Quitfeld of the other part, by which the said Thomas de Mounteny and Joan acknowledged the said tenements to be the right of the said Thomas de Quitfeld as of their gift, and for this acknowledgment Thomas de Quitfeld granted them the manor of Soulby for their lives, and all the remaining tenements for the life of Joan only, with remainder to Robert, son of Richard de Musgrave, and the heirs of his body, and reversion to the right heirs of Joan. Thomas de Mounteny died in the lifetime of Joan.
She had no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
She died on 26 April, 28 Edward III. Robert de Musgrave, her son, aged 40 years, is her heir.

163. JOHN DE COLCESTRE, citizen and vintner of London.
Writ to Thomas Leggy, mayor of London and escheator, 26 November, 28 Edward III.
Endorsed by the escheator that he had, on 9 December, 28 Edward III, taken into the king’s hand two contiguous tenements in the parish of St. Martin in the Vintry, London, of which the said John died seised. The said tenements are empty and no one lives in them.
LONDON. Inq. held at London before the mayor, 9 December, 28 Edward III.
London. Two contiguous tenements in the parish of St. Martin in the Vintry, which Henry le Gauger, late citizen and vintner, gave by his charter to the said John de Colcestre and Joan his wife, the said Henry’s daughter. The said John outlived the said Joan. The said tenements are worth yearly 4l., less 33s. 4d. yearly to a chaplain in the church of St. Michael of Paternostercherche, for support of a chantry there, which quit rent one Lawrence Duket, late a citizen of the said city, bequeathed in his testament, proved and enrolled in the hustings of London, in aid of making a chantry in the said church, and charged the premises therewith; also 20s. yearly for repairs. The premises are held of the king in chief, as is the whole city of London.
He died on Monday before SS. Simon and Jude, 28 Edward III. He has no heir, so far as the jury can ascertain.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, Wednesday before St. Edmund the King, 28 Edward III.
Bromfeld. A moiety of the manor of ‘Belstedehalle’ therein held of William de Wauton, knight, by service of 20s. yearly.
Foxhirde. The manor held jointly by the deceased and Katherine his wife, who survives, of the gift of Andrew de Bures, knight, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the said Andrew and his heirs. The said John and Katherine have no issue of their bodies. A parcel of the said manor, called …, is held of the prior of Stoke, by service of 100s. yearly; and a parcel called ‘Merseyes’ is held of the manor of Pentelowe, service not known; and a parcel called ‘Bradefeld’ is held of Sir John Fitz Wauter, service not known, and is charged with 4l. yearly to William Botevyleyn; and the rest of the manor is held of the lady of Clare by knight’s service. The said manor is charged with 30l. yearly to John de Goldyngton during the lives of the deceased and Katherine his wife, and also with 20s. yearly to William de Geddyng.
Berle. The manor held jointly by the deceased and Katherine his wife for their lives, with reversion to the aforesaid Andrew de Bures, they rendering to him yearly 20l. during their lives.
Spryngefeld. A tenement called ‘Olyvers’ held jointly by the said John and Katherine for their lives, of the manor of S[pryngefeld?], service not known. The reversion belongs to William de Wenden.
Spryngefeld. The manor held in right of Katherine his wife by joint purchase thereof with John de Goldyngton, sometime her husband, of the king as of the honour of Boulogne by knight’s service.
Little Badewe, Ryngers, … erlyng …, Sturmere and Trendeye. The manors, tenures and value not known.
He held no other lands &c. in the county; but he held the manor of Pentelowe by the king’s letters patent at a rent of 16l. into the king’s wardrobe, this manor being in the king’s hand through the death of Roger Normand and the minority of his heir.
He died on Friday, the eve of All Saints last. Nicholas Fermer, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Thele, Thursday the feast of St. Edmund the King, 28 Edward III.
Thele. The manor held in right of his wife Katherine, who survives.

Writ after the death of the said John, who died a minor in the king’s wardship. 1 March, 28 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Great Lymbergh, Tuesday after the Annunciation, 28 Edward III.
Kelebi. A messuage and 40s. yearly rent held of the king in chief by service of keeping a falcon of the king’s for half a year at the king’s wages, receiving 12d. daily; 6a. land held of Robert de Salfletby by service of 20d. yearly; 4a. land held of the prioress of Cotoun by service of 2s. 6d. yearly.
Lymbergh. Eight aeres of land held of Tecia, late the wife of John de Baumys, by service of 21d. yearly.
He died on Monday after St. Peter’s Chains, 23 Edward III. Agnes, aged 19 years at the feast of St. Mark last, and Alice, aged 16 years at the feast of St. Margaret last, daughters of Geoffrey de Keleby, are kinswomen and heirs of the said John.

LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Medburn, 6 April, 28 Edward III.
Medburne. 10s. rent held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of an eighteenth part of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died in the pestilence now past, about the feast of St. Gregory, 23 Edward III. Cecily, daughter of John Dosevill, married to Guy de Boys of the county of Hertford, is kinswoman and heir of the said Hugh, and was 24 years of age and more at Christmas last. There is no issue between the said Guy and Cecily.

Flokethorp. The manor, with the advowson of the church of Hardyngham, worth 20l. and 26l. respectively yearly, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, of the gift of Thomas de Camoys, knight, and Margaret his wife, to the said John and his heirs by fine levied in the king’s court.

A messuage in ruins, 40a. sterile land on the weald and 12a. wood, held of the king in chief as parcel of a serjeanty held by Henry de la Poile at Guldeford and Stokes, the whole of which is held of the king in chief by service of rendering 25s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff of Surrey. The premises render 12d. yearly to Henry de la Poylle.

170. MARGARET, LATE THE WIFE OF RICHARD DAMMORY, knight.
Writ, 3 December, 28 Edward III.
OXFORD. Inq. taken at Oxford without the north gate, 8 December, 28 Edward III.
Hodyndon. A third part of the manor, with a third part of the profits of the hundreds of Bolyndon and Northgate, viz. without the north gate of Oxford, held for her life of the inheritance of Richard Dammory, still surviving, and of full age. The whole manor of Hodyndon, together with the hundreds aforesaid, is held of the king in chief in perpetual fee farm by rendering yearly at the Exchequer 81l. sterling.
Stoke del Idle. Certain lands and tenements held for her life of the aforesaid inheritance of the gift of Giles de Insula, of the king by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee.
Bokenhull. The manor held for her life of the aforesaid inheritance, of Robert Plescy by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 28 March, 28 Edward III. Richard Dammory, her son, aged 35 years and more, is her heir.

Writ to Henry duke of Lancaster or to his chancellor in the duchy, after the death of the said John Flemmyng, who held of the king in chief, as of the fees of William de Coucy, which are in the king’s hand. 28 March, 28 Edward III.
Endorsed by the duke that he had given order to Alan de Raynford, his escheator in the said duchy.
LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Ulvereston before the said Alan, Thursday after St. John of Beverley, 28 Edward III.
Coningeston. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief as of the fees late of William de Coucy, by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a water-mill and a fulling-mill, and a fishery in the water of Thwrstanwater.
Clagton. Two marks rent held of John de Croft.
Le Waterend. Forty acres of land held of John de Haverington by service of a pair of white gloves.

Writ to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Alice, 28 January, 28 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Magor, Monday after St. Valentine, 28 Edward III.
Redwyk in Magor. A third part of the manor (extent given) held in dower of the inheritance of Michael, son of Amy, daughter and one of the heirs of the said John de Knovill, Thomas Achard, son of Cecily, daughter and another heir of the said John, and John Dun, son of Eleanor, daughter and another heir of the said John. The said manor is held of the king in chief by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.
She held no more lands &c. in the bailiwick.
She died on 10 July, 20 Edward III, and the aforesaid Michael died a minor in the month of May, 26 Edward III. Alice, daughter of the aforesaid Amy, and sister of Michael, married to William de Luscote, aged 19 years, is heir of Michael, and the said William and she have issue. John Dun is son and heir of Eleanor, and on 1 August last was 21 years of age. Thomas Achard is son and heir of Cecily, and on 28 December last was 16 years of age.

Divers lands &c. in the hands of tenants at will, rendering 10 marks yearly, and the advowson of a moiety of the church of Great Bampton held for her life, of the inheritance of William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, of Margaret de Dacre by fealty and by service of 6d. yearly for free farm.
Crosseby and Walby. Divers lands &c. in the hands of tenants at will, rendering 70s. 6d. yearly, held for her life, of the inheritance aforesaid, of the bishop of Carlisle by fealty and by service of 1lb. cummin yearly.
Carlisle. Twenty shillings yearly rent from two messuages held for her life of the inheritance aforesaid, of the citizens of Carlisle by service of 4d. yearly for gabulage.

Karsyngton. The manor (extent given) held for her life by way of dower, of the inheritance of William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, who is of full age, of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and by rendering yearly to the ward of the king’s castle of Dover every 24 weeks ten shillings …
Twenty acres of arable there and 20s. yearly rent held for her life by way of dower, of the inheritance aforesaid, of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honour of Pontefract (Pontefrigide), by service of a thirtieth part of a knight’s fee.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the said mayor, 10 September, 28 Edward III.
Parish of St. Benet near Paules Warf. A messuage with garden, three contiguous shops with two solars built thereon and a brewhouse held for her life by way of dower of the inheritance of William de Mounte Acuto, now earl of Salisbury, son and heir of William de Mounte Acuto, late earl of Salisbury, son and heir of William de Mounte Acuto, late husband of the said Elizabeth. The brewhouse she demised to the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s, London, for her life. The premises are worth 10l. 3s. 4d. yearly, less 55s. yearly quit rent to the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s, and 20s. yearly quit rent to the abbot and convent of Charteseye and 60s. yearly for repairs. The premises are held of the king in free burgage as is all the city of London.
She held no other lands &c. within the liberty of the city.
She died on 27 August, 28 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 26 years and more.

YORK. Inq. taken at Roderham, Monday the feast of the Nativity of the Virigin Mary, 28 Edward III.
Whistan. The manor, with its members of Aston, Totewik, Treton, Ullay, Brampton, Catteclif and Orgrave, held for her life by way of dower, of the inheritance of Thomas de Furnivall, knight, who is of full age. She was sometime wife of Thomas de Furnivall, grandfather of the said Thomas, and had the said manor and members in dower after his death. The premises are held of Andrew Lutterel, knight, by knight’s service. The aforesaid manor and members are worth yearly 4l. 17s. 8d. and no more, because the greater part is in service and not in rent or in demesne.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on Friday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist last. Heir not known, because no tenements in the county ought to remain or descend to him through her death.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Wyrsop, Tuesday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 28 Edward III.
Wyrksop. The manor (extent given, including 240a. arable without the park, 50a. meadow without and within the park, 80a. arable within the park, a market and fair) held for her life by way of dower, of the gift of Thomas de Furnivall, sometime her husband, of the inheritance of Thomas de Furnivall, kinsman and heir of the aforesaid Thomas, viz. son of Thomas son of the aforesaid Thomas de Furnivall. Thomas that now is was of full age long before the death of the said Elizabeth. The manor is held of Philippa, queen of England, by service of three knights’ fees, by rendering 42s. yearly to the castle of Tykhull and suit of court every three weeks.
Date of death as in the last. Except the aforesaid Thomas de Furnivall, there are no heirs of the said Elizabeth of the inheritance of Thomas de Furnivall, the father.
DERBY. Inq. taken at Chapel in le Fryth, Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 28 Edward III.
Eyum. The manor (extent given) held in dower, of the inheritance of Sir Thomas de Furnivall, of Philippa, queen of England, by service of three parts of a knight’s fee; and every tenant of the manor shall plough and mow for one day with the said queen on the demesnes of Bradewell. The extent includes a lead mine and the advowson of the church, which is taxed at 20 marks.
Middelton. The manor (extent given, including a mine and the herbage ‘del Fryth’), held in dower, of the same inheritance, of Sir Thomas de Chaworth by service of a sparrowhawk.
Baunford. The manor held for her life, of the same inheritance, of Sir Nicholas de Langeford, by service of 12d. yearly and of ploughing and mowing for one day with the said Nicholas at his manor of Haverseg by tenants of the said manor of Baunford.
Brassington. The manor and ten bovates of land held in fee for her life of Sir Henry, duke of Lancaster, by knight’s service.

She died about the feast of St. Laurence last. William de Monte Acuto, son of William de Monte Acuto, son of the said William and Elizabeth, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Shirbourn, Thursday after St. Lucy, 28 Edward III.
Mersshwode. The manor and the advowson of the church held for life jointly with Ela his wife, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies, of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Wodeton. The manor and the advowson of the church similarly held, of the lord of Cokelyngton by knight’s service; both manors of the gift of Jordan de Byntre, chaplain, by fine levied in the king’s court.
Acford. The manor and the advowson of the church similarly held, of the abbot of Glastonbury by knight’s service, of the gift of the same Jordan by another fine.
Wroxhale. The manor and the advowson of the church held for life of Robert de Loundres by knight’s service, of the gift of Thomas Wygod and Robert de Sambourne, clerks, by fine levied in the king’s court; which manor and advowson ought now to remain to Master Robert, son of Richard le Grey of Codenore, and Elizabeth his wife and the heirs of the body of the said Robert son of Richard by the aforesaid fine, because Robert Fitz Payn died without heir male of himself.
He died on the feast of St. Andrew last. Isabel his daughter, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

The said manors of Ceden, Stapele, Cherleton and Cary, with the advowsons, ought now to remain to Robert, son of Richard le Grey of Codenore, and Elizabeth his wife and the heirs of the body of the said Robert son of Richard by the fine aforesaid, because Robert Fitz Payn died without heir male of himself.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Jevele, Tuesday before St. Gregory, 29 Edward III.
Kyngeston by Jevele. 6l. 7s. yearly rent from tenants dwelling in a street called Fordestret.
Walrondesmerssh. The reversion of a messuage and of a carucate of land held for life by Maud Dovre, of the demise of John Walrond, which reversion belongs to John Chidyok and Isabel his wife as daughter and heir of the deceased.
All held of John Talbot as of Richard’s Castle by knight’s service.
Alwyneshegh. The manor, and a messuage, a mill, 137a. 1r. land, 8a. meadow, 10 1/2a. pasture, 20a. aldergrove and six marks 12s. 8 1/2d. rent in Kyngestane and the advowson of the church of Kyngestane held for life, of the grant of John de Chidyok by fine levied in the king’s court, with reversion to the said John and his heirs. The said tenements are held of the heir of John de Burgo by knight’s service. Although by the inquisition previously returned into Chancery it was found that the manor of Stapele was held of John de Bello Campo by knight’s service, because the jurors of that inquisition were not well informed; yet the evidences of the bishop of Winchester having now been seen, it is held of the said bishop as of his manor of Taunton by knight’s service.
By the previous inquisition it was also found that the deceased held for his life jointly with Ela his wife, who survives, a messuage and a carucate of land called ‘Walrondesmerssh,’ because the said jurors were not then well informed; fuller information, however, having now been had, it is found that the said Robert was seised thereof in fee on the day he died, and that the said messuage and land are held of John Talbot as of Richard’s Castle by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death and heir as above. The said Isabel and John Chidyok have offspring.

176. JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF DAVID DE CAUNTON, knight.
Writ, 16 March, 28 Edward III.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Pyriton, Thursday after Easter Sunday, 28 Edward III.
Pyriton. A moiety of the manor held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. of the gift of Adam Doverton, parson of the church of Ibestok, and Henry de Sodyngton, parson of the church of Esshetesford, to the said David, now long dead, and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to William de Clynton, earl of Huntyngdon, and his heirs. The said David and Joan had issue, a daughter born in Ireland, but the jurors know not whether she survives or not.
She died on Tuesday after St. Gregory last. The aforesaid daughter, if surviving, is her heir, and aged 16 years and more.
Writ of certiorari to J. archbishop of Dublin and chancellor of Ireland, on the petition of John, son of Nicholas de Kery, that the king would restore to him the lands &c. in Ireland late of David de Caunton, knight, taken into the king’s hand through the death of the said David, and committed, until the lawful age of the heir, to the petitioner by letters patent sealed with the seal used in Ireland, and afterwards, by writ under the great seal of England directed to the chancellor and council of Ireland, reseised into the king’s hand through a false suggestion made to the king and council in England by William, son of Edmund de Caunton. 6 June, 28 Edward III.
Return by the said chancellor. Upon examination of the rolls and memoranda of the Chancery of Ireland, no writ was found sent from England to retake into the king’s hand the aforesaid lands &c. nor any process of retaking the same, and, for the sake of further information, the justiciary of Ireland was asked, by writ under the great seal of Ireland, to examine the writs and other memoranda of his place, whether anything might be found there touching such writ and process, and to certify it into the Chancery of Ireland; which certificate, together with the tenor of the writ of diem clausit extremum and of the inquisition made thereupon after the death of David de Caunton and returned into the Chancery of Ireland, the chancellor sends to the king under the foot of the said seal.
For it was said here in the council that Sir Maurice Caunton, father of the said David, whose heir the said David was said to be, either incurred forfeiture (forisfecit) towards the king by riding in war (de guerra) with his banner unfurled (explicato) against the king’s banner in Ireland, or was outlawed on that account; and it has not yet been found here by what process the said David came to the aforesaid lands &c. late of the said Maurice his father, but, as is believed, the said David did his homage in England, and there had restitution of the same, and the process thereof, if such were, should be seen in the rolls of the Chancery in England. Nevertheless, the aforesaid lands &c. were lately taken into the king’s hand and still are there by the death and by reason of the forfeiture of David, son of William de Caunton, nephew of David de Caunton aforesaid, who feloniously slew the same David de Caunton. Undated.
Writ of certiorari to the justiciary of Ireland as to the tenor of a writ under the great seal of England, directed to the said justiciary and the chancellor of Ireland, at the suit of William, son of Edmund de Caunton, as is said, to take into the king’s hand all the lands &c. late of David de Caunton, knight; which lands &c. were lately committed to John son of Nicholas as above, until the lawful age of the said David’s heir. The justiciary, after examination of the writs and other memoranda touching that business, is to certify the king in the Chancery of Ireland. Witness: Thomas de Rokeby, justiciary of Ireland. IRELAND. Inq. taken at Castellethan, Sunday after St. Luke, 15 Edward III.
He held of the king in chief:—
Balyderawyn. The castle with two carucates of land.
Moydrithan and Cornetherbrid. Two carucates of land.
Laghnaghert. Two carucates of land.
Shanclon and Kynseskyn. One carucate of land.
Coulmony and Barnefole. Half a carucate of land.
Killord. A water-mill and a rent of eight marks of the borough, half a mark’s rent of the pleas and perquisites of the hundred and court of Killord and Balyderawyn, and 20s. rent yearly of Miles son of Alan. The advowson of the church of Killord belongs to the castle of Balyderawyn.
The aforesaid castle, lands and rents are held of the king by homage.
Glendon. A knight’s fee, held of Sir Walter de Bermyngham by service of five marks yearly and suit at the court of Narlagh every fortnight.
Couldowagh. 9s. 5d. yearly rent.
Lagharlane. 30s. yearly rent.
He died on Monday after St. Michael, 14 Edward III. Elizabeth his daughter, aged 3 years on the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, is his heir.

177. THOMAS DE WESTON.
Writ, 20 July, 28 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Donemowe, Monday after St. Peter’s Chains, 28 Edward III.
Aytrop Rothynge. The manor (extent given, including 20a. wood and five ploughshares rent at Michaelmas), with the advowson of the church, held of the gift of Richard de Tiwerisle, parson of the said church, to the said Thomas, Margery, then his wife, and the heirs male of the body of the said Thomas, with remainder to Margaret, daughter of the said Thomas, and the heirs of her body. Thomas died without heir male of his body; Margaret had issue two daughters, one, by John de Lovayne, a minor in the king’s wardship, the other, by William de Wauton, a minor, as appears below; she died in the lifetime of the said Thomas. The manor and advowson are held of the earl of Oxford by knight’s service and by suit of the earl’s court of Gelham every three weeks, because one Robert de Rothynge held the manor and advowson of Robert de Veer, then earl of Oxford, ancestor of the present earl, by the aforesaid services, and gave the said manor and advowson to King Edward I and Eleanor his consort, who by their letters patent gave the said manor and advowson to Guy de Forri and his heirs. Afterwards Edward I granted to Robert de Veer, then earl of Oxford, son of the aforesaid Robert de Veer, that the said manor and advowson might be held of him and his heirs for ever, as they were formerly held, notwithstanding that the said manor and advowson were in the king’s hand as above.
Elmested. The manor held for his life of Philippa, queen of England, as of the honour of Reylegh, by knight’s service, of the inheritance of Thomas Throkenesford, who is of full age.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Saturday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Eleanor, a daughter and heir of the aforesaid Margaret, daughter of the deceased, aged 9 years and more, and in the king’s wardship because John de Lovayne, her father, [held] lands &c. of the king in chief, and Elizabeth, the other daughter and heir of the said Margaret, aged 5 years, are the said Margaret’s heirs of the manor aforesaid.

ISLE OF WIGHT. Inq. taken at Neuport, Monday the morrow of St. Clement, 28 Edward III.
La Clyve. A messuage and a carucate of land held of the king in chief as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrok, by service of a thirteenth part of a knight’s fee and by doing suit at the court of knights of Neuport every three weeks.
Midelton and Auecheston. A messuage and a carucate of land held of Lady Elizabeth del Isle, lady of Appelderford, by service of half a knight’s fee.
He died on 27 July, 28 Edward III. He had three daughters, his co-heirs; Eleanor, who survives, aged 26 years and more, married to John de Rattlesden, knight; Margaret, who is dead and has two daughters still surviving, one named Eleanor, aged 10 years, the other Isabel, aged 7 years; the third daughter, Isabel, is dead and has a son named Roger, aged 7 years.

179. LAURENCE DE EYETE.
Writ to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Laurence, 12 May, 28 Edward III.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Ayote de St. Laurence, 9 June, 28 Edward III.
Eyete or Ayote. The manor (full extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, then surviving, of the gift of Thomas, parson of the church of Ayote Laurence, and John de Henlowe, chaplain, to hold to them and the heirs of Laurence, of the earl of Hereford and the abbot of St. Alban’s, viz. a parcel thereof of the said earl by knight’s service and another parcel of the abbot by service of rendering 11s. 8d. yearly. The extent includes 400a. of poor and stony land, a wood, and a rent of 4l. 2s. 4d. in the towns of St. Alban’s, Hatfeld, Codycote, Whethampstede, Stevenach and Wilien, and a yearly fair on the eve and the day of St. Laurence the Martyr.
He died on Tuesday before the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary last. Joan died on Tuesday before the Annunciation last. William son of the said Laurence, convicted of felony, and a clerk, and detained in the prison of the bishop of Winchester, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

Sandone, Alfladewyk and Thorkkingge. Parcel of the said lands is held of Gilbert de Ellesfeld as of the manor of Throkkingge by service of rendering yearly 7s. 6d. and 1/2lb. of pepper; parcel of Robert de Sandon by service of rendering 3s. 2d. yearly; and parcel of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem by service of rendering yearly 2s.
He had no other lands &c. in the county.
