EDITORIAL NOTE
Volume seven is the sixth to be published of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire and the fifth since the revival of the Gloucestershire History in 1958. An outline of the structure and aims of the Victoria History as a whole, as also of its origins and progress, is included in the General Introduction (1970), and the arrangements by which the Gloucestershire County Council and the University of London collaborate to produce the Gloucestershire History are indicated in the Editorial Note to Gloucestershire, Volume Six. Once again it is the General Editor's pleasure to record the University's gratitude for the generosity displayed by the County Council.
The compilation of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire has continued to be supervised by the County Council's Recreation and Leisure Committee, and since the publication of Volume Eleven in 1976 the Chairman of that committee (Cllr. P. M. Robins), the county editor of the Gloucestershire History (Dr. N. M. Herbert) and the assistant editor (Dr. A. R. J. Jurica) have remained in office.
The authors and editors of the volume, as of all similar volumes, have drawn widely on the information and advice of many people, too numerous to be mentioned individually here but named in the footnotes to the articles with which they helped. They are all most cordially thanked. For access to records in their possession grateful acknowledgement is made to the Marquess of Bath, Earl St. Aldwyn, of Williamstrip Park, Mr. H. W. G. Elwes, of Colesbourne, Mr. G. J. Phillips, of S. J. Phillips & Sons (Kemble) Ltd., Mr. John Workman, of Sheepscombe, the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester, the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, the Warden and Scholars of New College, Oxford, the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford, and the Keeper of the Oxford University Archives.
