1354.	(f. 10d.) John de Bothuyll, clerk of the king of Scotland. For confirmation of the provision made to him by Clement VI. of the canonry and prebend of Kynnor in Moray, void by the death of Thomas de Lythton, which he has held for four years, notwithstanding that he has the rectory of Kynkell, in the diocese of Aberdeen. Granted, if no one else has a lawful claim to them. Avignon, 15 Kal. Feb.
	(f. 13.) Alexander Bure, a Scot, licentiate in canon and civil law of Orleans, and examined and approved by the doctors of canon law of Paris, for a canonry of Ross, with reservation of a prebend, notwithstanding that he has the archdeaconry of Moray, and a prebend of Dunkeld, value 5 marks. Granted. Avignon, 15 Kal. Feb.
	(f. 20.) Whereas William de Henrech, rector of Wallingford, and William de Brom, perpetual vicar of Cotesdon, resigned their benefices in order to exchange them, the pope is prayed to make provision of the same. Granted. Avignon, 7 Kal. Feb.
	(f. 25d.) Henry, duke of Lancaster. Whereas by papal indult the prior or master of the hospital of St. Mary, Leicester, where the duke's father is buried, was allowed to hear confessions and absolve those who visited it at Michaelmas and during eight days before and eight days after; and whereas so great a number of people come that the prior is unable to hear the n all, the pope is prayed to give him faculty to take with him ten other priests of the same college to hear confessions during the said time. 	(f. 27d.) Henry de Smalham, M.A. scholar of canon law. For a canonry of Glasgow, with expectation of a prebend, he having long and fruitlessly expected a prebend of Dunkeld under a provision of Clement VI. notwithstanding that he has the perpetual vicarage of Fogou, in the diocese of St. Andrews, from which, on account of the war, he gets nothing. Whereas David de Mar, papal chaplain, prebendary of Deer, and Adam Flayl, prebendary of Owyn, canons of Aberdeen, resigned their canonries and prebends in order to exchange them, the pope is prayed to make provision of the same, notwithstanding that David has a canonry, prebend, and treasurers hip of Moray. 	(f. 41d.) William Falconis, clerk, of the diocese of Agen. Whereas he, when the pope and Anibaldus, cardinal of Naples, were nuncios to France and England, was sent with a, companion to carry papal letters touching the muster-roll, and crossed the sea to present them to the archbishop of Canterbury and other prelates of the realm, his companion was, on account of this mission, basely seized and for two years imprisoned at Calais, when he died on being turned out of prison, and William, in fear of the like fate, returning to the place of the muster-roll, related what bad fallen out, to the pope, in the presence of cardinal Anibaldus, the prelates of England, and the barons at the siege of Calais. He prays therefore for a benefice value 100 pounds of Tours with cure of souls, or 60 without, in the gift of the archbishop of Auch, notwithstanding that he has benefices in France. Granted. 	(f. 51d.) Guy de Briene, baron. Whereas while the suit about the church of Tynebey (Tenby), in the diocese of St. Davids, between his clerk and secretary, John Seys and Thomas Melyn was pending, Thomas died at the Roman court, he prays the pope to transfer to John whatever right Thomas had in the same, notwithstanding that he has canonries and prebends of St. Davids and Aberwyly, and the church of Hanney, in the diocese of Salisbury, which he is prepared to resign on obtaining Tenby. For the canonry and prebend of Exeter, void by the resignation of his kinsman, William de Cusancia, notwithstanding that John has the church of Martheley and a canonry and prebend of Glaseney (Periyn), in the dioceses of Worcester and Exeter. 	(f. 103.) William, earl of Huntingdon. Whereas the pope made provision to Thomas de Merston of a canonry of Chichester, with expectation of a prebend, notwithstanding that he had a parish church, and he, on the strength of such dispensation, obtained another church, of which no mention was made in the earl's petition, the earl prays the pope to make provision of the canonry and prebend to Thomas, who is ready to resign the church. 	(f. 106d.) John called ‘Macadam,’ of the diocese of Limerick, a poor student. For a benefice without cure of souls, in the gift of the bishop of Limerick, if there is one void in the city or diocese of Emly, so that he may pay the expenses of living at an university. Granted. On behalf of her clerk and envoy, Master John de Holand, skilled in canon and civil law, for a canonry and prebend of Exeter, notwithstanding that he has the church of Tisbury, and canonries and prebends of St. Karentoce, value 3l. about which he has a suit, and of Cholmeleigh, value 1l. 5s. in the diocese of Exeter. 	(f. 120.) John de Wellewyk, B.C.L. the king's notary. For the canonry and prebend of Munketon in Ripon, on their voidance by the consecration of Michael, bishop elect of London, notwithstanding that he has the church of Fornessete, in the diocese of Norwich, and a canonry and prebend of Cloyne, which last he is prepared to resign. 	(f. 127d.) The abbot and Cistercian convent of Hulton, in the diocese of Lichfield, and James de Audelay, knight, whose ancestors were founders of the monastery. Whereas the endowment has been lessened by wars and other mishaps to the amount of 14l. out of which there has to be paid 4l. 13s. and whereas the said James intends to increase the endowment, the pope is prayed to appropriate the church of Audelay of James's patronage, a perpetual vicar's portion being reserved. 	(f. 141d.) William, son of Nicholas le Couper, priest, of the diocese of Norwich. Signification that he, by apostolic dispensation on account of illegitimacy, obtained a benefice, and on resigning it obtained, without dispensation, another. Whereas Clement VI. gave a canonry of Glasgow, with expectation of a prebend, to Richard de Fogow, M.A. and scholar of canon law at Paris, which provision by reason of the late pope's death and the revocations by the present pope was useless, the king prays for provision of the same anew, notwithstanding that Richard has the church of Douglas in the diocese of Glasgow, whose fruits are much lessened by the wars. Whereas John de Kinardesley, his uncle, when in his twenty-third year, obtained by authority of the ordinary the church of Kinardesley, and resigned it when twenty-five, another rector being instituted, and after some time again obtained it by institution of the bishop of Hereford, and was ordained deacon, and again resigned it, and for a third time obtained it, being instituted by the bishop as rector, without being ordained priest, out of youthful levity seduced by advice of his friends; he has now finally resigned it, twenty years or thereabouts having elapsed, and being now about seventy, and feeling his conscience burdened with the said facts, Richard prays the pope to remit the fruits received and to grant the necessary dispensation. Signification that he in his twenty-second year obtained the church of Wickham, in the diocese of London, and held it for seven weeks, receiving no fruits therefrom, and then resigned it, and then got the sinecure chapel of the bishop of London's palace, which he exchanged for the church of Blende worth, in the diocese of Winchester, which he has held for five years and more. He is now ready to resign this and to compound with the papal camera for fruits received. He prays for dispensation on account of irregularity, and for collation of the church anew. On behalf of Master John de Stretle, D.C.L. constable of Bordeaux, who obtained a canonry of Lincoln and prebend of Banbury, of which he has been despoiled by Peter de Wotton, but hopes to recover his right to them, for a patronage or office with cure of souls in Lincoln cathedral, notwithstanding that provision was made to him by Clement VI. of a canonry and prebend of Salisbury, of which he has not yet got possession. Whereas in the town of Great Yarmouth there is a hospital of St. Mary the Virgin, in which live a multitude of poor brethren and sisters, for whose sustenance a daily quest has to be made, the pope is prayed to authorise their acceptance of oblations, and to grant relaxation of a year and forty days of enjoined penance to those who visit the hospital and the sacred relics therein, and who give a helping hand to the poor inhabitants thereof. 	(f. 63.) William de Donne, D.C.L. official of Lincoln and Worcester. Whereas he obtained the archdeaconry of Leicester on the death of Henry de Chaddesden, and doubts whether it was reserved to the apostolic see, he prays for confirmation of the same, or provision anew, notwithstanding that he has the church of Queynton, which he is ready to resign, and a prebendal provision of St. Endellion. 	(f. 66.) Richard de Thormerton, advocate in the Roman court, treasurer of Wells. Signification that by authority of Clement VI. he accepted the prebend of Whitchurch in Wells, on the death of Robert de Luffinham, and has held it for six years and more, but doubts whether it was reserved by the said pope. He therefore prays for approval of the said provision, notwithstanding that he has a canonry and prebend of Exeter, value 40s. and a prebend of Westbury, in the diocese of Worcester, value 10 marks. 	(f. 69.) Whereas in a suit between John de Combe, of the diocese of Exeter, and Stephen de Rading, touching the perpetual vicarage of Yealmpton held by the latter, John obtained three sentences in his favour by divers auditors of the sacred palace, and died at the Roman Court before they were executed, Robert Gervays of Thyruneby, a poor priest of the diocese of Lincoln, prays for succession to the said John in his right to the said vicarage. 	(f. 79.) The Cistercian abbot of Whalley, in the diocese of Lichfield. Whereas the number of monks has been increased by twenty, who pray for the pope, and whereas the abbot is building the enlarged church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, he prays the pope to grant indulgences of three years and three quadragene on the four feasts of St. Mary to those who give a helping hand to the building of the same. For the canonry and prebend of Llandewybrevy, in the diocese of St. Davids, void by the death of Edmund de Grimmesby at the Roman court, notwithstanding that he has the church of Boddeley, and a canonry and prebend of Wells, about which he is litigating. 	(f. 85.) Michael, bishop elect of London. For licence to make provision to six or four clerks of churches of his patronage, or of prebends of London. Let him nominate one person in the cathedral church of London, and another to a benefice. Avignon, 6 Id. Nov.

On behalf of Master John Barnet, his vicar in spirituals, elected last year to the deanery of London, for the canonry and prebend of Lichfield, value 10 marks, which the bishop elect held, notwithstanding that John has a canonry and prebend of London, the church of Westwell, in the diocese of Canterbury, and a prebend in the collegiate church of Norton, in the diocese of Durham, value 10 marks. 	(f. 94d.) Guy de Brienne, baron. Whereas while a suit was pending in the Roman court between Simon de Briselee and Richard de Kilvington touching a canonry and prebend of York, Simon, who held them, died, the pope is prayed to place Guy's intimate friend William de Dalton in the place of Simon, notwithstanding that he has the church of Houghton, and has canonries and prebends of Auckland and Bridgenorth. Whereas the late Duncan, earl of Fife, patron of the church of Ucthyrmokedi, in the diocese of St. Andrews, gave them the patronage of the same, and the bishop granted it to their uses, a perpetual vicar being instituted therein, and with the consent of the king of Scotland, the pope is prayed to confirm the said gift and grant of the earl and bishop. 	(f. 101d.) Ralph, bishop of Bath and Wells. Whereas a year ago he gave the archdeaconry of Bath and a canonry and prebend of Wells to his kinsman, John Power, skilled in the law, on the death of Walter Hull, and fears they are reserved to the apostolic see, he prays for confirmation of the same, notwithstanding that John is litigating at the papal court about the church of Pokalchurche (Pucklechurch). For the perpetual vicarage of Gamery, in the diocese of Aberdeen, void by reason that Clement VI. gave William Boyle, late vicar, the precentorship of Moray; Brice having accepted the said vicarage so void by papal provision, and now holds it. Petitions of the king:— Signification that he commended the underwritten petitions to Clement VI. by divers envoys, and lastly by his confessor, on account of the great devotion which he has to increase divine worship in the royal chapel of Windsor, in which he has endowed a college of a warden and 24 canons and as many poor knights, and in whose chapel there is a cross adorned with gems from the wood of the Saviour's cross, a piece of great length which St. Helen brought with her own hands and destined for Britain, now called England; the king having been born and proposing to be buried in the said castle. The king prays for an indulgence of three years and three quadragene to those who visit the said chapel and cross on Palm Sunday, Holy Saturday, Easter, on the feast of St. George, the Exaltation of the Cross, Whitsuntide, Christmas, St. Stephen, the four feasts of the Blessed Virgin, All Saints, and St. Edward the Confessor. Granted for two years and two quadragene. Avignon, 19 Kal. Jan.
	Ibid. The same. That his confessor may hear the confessions of his household, regular and secular, in cases not reserved to the apostolic see, and absolve them. Granted for those who sit at table with the present king. Dated as above.

Whereas provision was made to his two chaplains, namely, to John de Wendlingburgh, steward of his household, of a benefice in the gift of the abbot and convent of Ramsey, and to Geoffrey Faufox of a benefice in the gift of the abbot and convent of Peterborough, that the pope would enlarge the provision of benefices in the gift of the said abbots to the value of 40l. Michael Free, called ‘de Northburgh.’ Whereas on the petition of M. bishop elect of London, the pope gave him a canonry of Chichester and the prebend of Sutton about to be void, and in the petition no mention was made of Michael's illegitimacy, on account of which he had a dispensation for renewal of the said provision and enlargement of the dispensation so that he may exchange his benefices. Whereas in the papal grant made to William de Donne, D.C.L. official of Lincoln and Worcester, of the archdeaconry of Leicester, which he before held by authority of the ordinary, no mention was made of the dispensation granted by Clement VI. that he might hold also the church of Queynton of lay patronage, which he proposed to resign, he prays that the said grant may have force as if no omission had been made, and that papal letters may be given him under the first date, without mention of his being bound to resign the said church, especially since the house of residence is attached to the archdeaconry; notwithstanding that he has a prebendal portion of St. Endellion. Granted under the present date, with licence to retain the said church until next All Saints, and that meanwhile he may exchange or must resign it. Avignon, 3 Id. Dec.
