  • 5. Among deaths for 1494 (338). Probably the John Eliot, chantry chaplain of St James Garlickhythe who requested burial in the processional way there by his will of 12 February, proved 28 February, 1494 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 70r)
  • 6. The name is unusual and he is presumably the Paschal Bedford who was admitted to Westminster Abbey in the year Michaelmas 1435–6 but who is not mentioned there after 1440–1 (Pearce, p 146). He is noted as a former Westminster monk in the Calendar of entries in the Papal Registers relating to Great Britain and Ireland 13,2: Papal letters 1471–84, ed JA Twemlow, p 378, where he was given a dispen- sation from wearing the monastic habit in 1481, already having dispensation to hold a secular priest's living. His presence among the priests on BR, and his earlier disappearance from the Westminster records suggests that he had long served among the parish clergy.
  • 7. Among deaths for 1492 (322). Admitted to Westminster Abbey in the year Michaelmas 1445–6, he served as Abbot 1469–74 and Bishop of Hereford 1474–92 (Pearce pp 152–3 and passim; DNB; Emden, BRUO to 1500).

He was also a common councilman for Langbourn ward (Tucker). His wife Joan was dead by the time of his will, but a Joan Walter was admitted with William below (108).

Probably the Richard Preston, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in St Bartholomew by the Exchange in his will of 11 October, proved 18 November, 1482 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 338v) and whose wife Marian survived him. Nicholas Wright, citizen and glover, requested burial in the body of St Benet Gracechurch before the altar of St Katherine by his will of 4 July, proved 21 August, 1491 (Guildhall MS 9171/8. f. 23v). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity and two bequests of 6s 8d to the Pappey fraternity.

Perhaps the Robert Colman, citizen and curner, who requested burial in the church of St Stephen Coleman Street by his will of 10 February, proved 11 March, 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 72v). Elyn or Elinor Deer, widow of William Deer, alderman and pewterer (83), requested burial with him in the choir of St Augustine Watling Street and left 10 marks to hire priests and clerks to sing a requiem mass and dirige in the same church each day for a month after her death. Her will of 15 December 1465 was proved 19 March 1467 (PROB 11/5, f. 130v).
  • 26. A William Blackman (Blakeman), citizen and tailor, requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill by his will of 12 February 1464, proved 4 June [1466] (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 385r).
  • 27. Bond requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Olave, in the place where his late wife Constance (Custance) was interred and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' brotherhood by his will of 22 May, proved 29 July, 1466 (PROB 11/5, f. 108v). Constance Bond appears among deaths for 1465 (102).
  • 28. A Stephen Pollard (Polarde), cook, requested burial in the cemetery of St Mary Woolchurch Haw by his will of 20 July, proved 30 July, 1466 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 386r).
  • 29. A James Garnon, licensed for the M Gram degree at Oxford, 1449 and High Master of St Paul's School in the same year is last attested as alive in 1466 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).

  • 31. Walter Hercy, citizen and haberdasher, requested burial in the church of St Michael le Querne by his will of 20 July 1463, proved 17 September 1466 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 387v). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife Agnes mentioned there was admitted in 1456 (47) and is among deaths for 1473 (158).
  • 32. Probably the John Goldwell, mercer, of St George, Botolph Lane, who held prop- erty in Kent, Surrey and Bloxham, Oxon. In his will of 3 October, proved 10 November, 1466 he mentions a brother Thomas Goldwell (PROB 11/5, f. 114r). Thomas may well be the individual of this name admitted in 1469 (121) and among deaths for 1485 (275) as he also held property in Bloxham and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity (PROB 117, f. 122r).
  • 33. Probably the William Burton who was senior master in 1491, where he is identified as parish clerk of St Helen's Bishopsgate (310).
  • 34. Among deaths for 1478 (202). Geoffrey Buckley (Bucley, Bukkeley) was rector of St Alban Wood Street 1465–77, when he died (Hennessy, pp 72, liv).

  • 37. Presumably the wife of William Daventry (Dawtree in the London Commissary Court records), who appears among deaths for 1467 (115). He was a parishioner of St Mildred Bread Street, and his wife Joan acted as executrix of his will of 19 December 1467, proved 2 April 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 26r).

Presumably the David Brecknock, citizen and baker, of the parish of St Alban Wood Street, who requested burial in the cemetery chapel of Stratford at Bow by his will of 12 February, proved 20 February, 1469 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 34r).
  • 39. Among deaths for 1480 (223). Probably the Margery Cobb (Cobbe), widow, relict of John Cobb, who requested burial close to the body of her late husband in the Lady chapel of St Alban Wood Street by her will of 3 November 1473 [recte ?1478] proved 11 September [1479] (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 253v). She was admitted with a John Cobbe (Cobe) above (113).

  • 42. A William Stafford, citizen and vintner, requested burial in his parish church of St Botolph Billingsgate by his will of 22 May 1466, proved 10 June 1467 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 45v).

  • 44. Alice, wife of Richard Illingworth, Kt, and relict of Thomas Chalton of St Alban Wood Street. She requested burial with the latter in the chapel of St Thomas the Martyr within St Alban Wood Street by her will of 3 July, proved 19 October, 1467 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 10r). Her husband Sir Richard survived her and appears among deaths for 1476 on BR (187).

  • 46. Simon Mayhew was again senior master in 1478 (196) where he is identified as parish clerk of St Dionis Backchurch. He was also a trustee of fraternity property in 1473 (Christie, p 89). The Joan Mayhew among the clerks' wives admitted below (120) is presumably his wife.
  • 47. Although this year is dated in the text as 1469, it clearly includes entries for the year beginning Ascension Day 1468 among the deaths and the considerably higher than normal number of entries further suggests that two years' worth of admis- sions have been conflated here. Some deaths for 1469 also appear under 1470 however.
  • 48. Robert Greetham BCnL, rector of St Dionis Backchurch January 1463, vacated by February 1489; rector of Fiskerton, Lincs, April 1482, vacated by September 1492 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He may also be the Robert Greetham who was elected Master of the Hospital of St Augustine Pappey in 1462 (VCH London, I, 550).
  • 49. Among deaths for 1480 (219). Perhaps the John Perche who proceeded MA by 1430 and was a fellow of Magdalen Hall; later canon of Lincoln 1458–63. According to Emden (BRUO to 1500), he died on 31 January 1480.
  • 50. Among deaths for 1480 (219). Wistan Browne was Vicar of St Sepulchre from 1471 until 1480 when he died (Hennessy, p 383; Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 51. Presumably the John Mower, senior proctor of Oxford University in 1461–2, who was rector of St Benet Sherehog 1482–9 and perpetual vicar of Tenterden, Kent. He left a will of 12 April, proved 16 November, 1489 (PROB 11/8, f. 161v) in which he requested burial in the chancel of St Mildred at Tenterden, but was certainly dead by October 1489 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 52. Among deaths for 1470 (130). One of this name of London diocese was ordained acolyte 24 February 1442 (Davis, 44126). The Thomas Eyre entered here is prob- ably the rector of St Nicholas Shambles who requested burial on the south side of the chancel of his church before the image of St Christopher by his will of 1 May, proved 3 December, 1469 (PROB 11/5, f. 250v). As his executors were John Blaknall, chaplain, and Henry Palmer, gentleman, of the Chapel Royal he may be identified with the Thomas Eyre who was a member of the Chapel in 1457 (D Baldwin, The Chapel Royal Ancient and Modern (1990), Appendix II).
  • 53. Among deaths for 1476 (184). John Bradmer requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill by his will of 8 November, proved 28 November, 1475 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 183v). He left 6s 8d to the Fraternity of St Nicholas and 20s to the Frater- nity of Sixty Priests. Perhaps also identifiable with the John Bradmer who was a former fellow of New College, Oxford (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 54. Probably the Robert Rasshe, rector of St Nicholas Olave where he requested burial by his will of 5 October, proved 13 November, 1469 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 45r). Hennessy states (pp 350, cxliv) that he was rector from c1461, but gives his date of death as 1468.
  • 55. Among deaths for 1489 (299). He was buried in the cloister of St Magnus Martyr according to the will of John Ostwike, priest, of 4 May 1495 (PROB 11/10, f. 232r).
  • 56. Among deaths for 1486 (272). Henry Madder, priest of St Margaret New Bridge Street, requested burial there close to St Peter's altar by his will of 27 April, proved 10 May, 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 175v). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity and 6d to every priest and clerk present at his interment.
  • 57. Among deaths for 1476 (184). Presumably Thomas Mason, the chaplain of St Michael Bassishaw parish, whose will of 14 July 1466 was proved 5 February 1476 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 186v). He requested burial in the chapel of St Mary [Magdalen] at Guildhall, leaving 4d each to the clerks of St Michael Bassishaw and Guildhall Chapel and 2d to every boy serving the latter, in addition to 3s 4d to the common box of the Pappey priests.
  • 58. Among deaths for 1481 (228). Monk of Westminster Abbey; ordained priest in the year Michaelmas 1443–4; member of the Assumption guild at Westminster, died 1480–1 (Pearce, p 151)
  • 59. A William Guy is recorded as prior of St Bartholomew, Smithfield 1484–1505 (Hennessy, p 101).
  • 60. A John Tadgus (Tadgoce) appears as a junior parish clerk at St Margaret's West- minster between 1488 and 1492, where regular payments of quarterage to him and the senior clerk, John Benet in the churchwardens' accounts identify him as in post (Westminster City Archives E1 (microfilm), pp 256, 258, 288). The individual admitted here may belong to an earlier generation however
  • 61. Among deaths for 1476 (185). A Thomas Cavell appears earlier as a member of the Chapel Royal in the years up to 1466 among the accounts of the keeper of the household wardrobe (E 101/411/13, f. 36, E 101/411/15, ff.18v-19 and E 101/412/2, f. 36) but more work is required to establish if there is a clear connection with the individual on the BR.   • 62. Among deaths for 1504 (430). Perhaps the Robert Holme who was paid 4s by the churchwardens at St Stephen Coleman Street in 1494–5 for 'syngers upon ye church halyday'. Baillie, Biographical Notes, deduces from this reference that the latter was a London choirmaster.
  • 63. Probably Edmund Turgis the composer. Much of his career is obscure. He was still active c1497–1502 (New Grove Dictionary) but there is no good reason to link him to the chaplain of this name at New College, Oxford in 1507–8.

  • 65. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Richard Lee, grocer and alderman 1452–72; Kt 1471 (Beaven, II, 10). He was mayor in 1460 and 1469 and his wife Lettice survived him (see Thrupp, p 353). Lettice Lee was admitted with him in 1469 (122). His will of 4 September 1470 was proved 4 March 1472 (PROB 11/6, f. 37r).
  • 66. Lambert (or Lambard) was a mercer and an alderman 1460–70 (Beaven, II, 12). For details of his family see Thrupp, p 352. He left a will of 24 September, proved 20 October, 1487 (PROB 11/8, f. 83v). His death is not recorded on BR.
  • 67. Among deaths for 1486 (275). He is the Thomas Windsor, esquire, of Stanwell, Middlesex, who asked for burial in St Mary's church there on the north side of the choir before the image of the Virgin by his will of 13 August 1479, proved 15 February 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 106r). His wife Elizabeth, mentioned as alive in his will, is presumably the individual of this name admitted with him (122).
  • 68. Among deaths for 1473 (157). John Wood, esquire, who requested burial in the hospital church of St Thomas the Martyr, Southwark, left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity in his will of 20 July, proved 16 October, 1472 (PROB 11/6, f. 47r).
  • 69. Among deaths for 1469 (123). Another John de Vache, fishmonger, was a common councilman for Bridge ward where he lived in 1449, and to which he left a legacy in his will (PROB 11/5, f. 95v) proved in 1465 (Tucker).
  • 70. Among deaths for 1471 (138). William Leming, grocer, is recorded as a common councilman for Portsoken ward c1462 (Tucker). He requested burial in the church of Holy Trinity, Aldgate, although a parishioner of St Olave Southwark, in his will of 18 September, proved 17 November, 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 247r). His wife Beat- rice later married Sir Philip Mathew, an alderman from 1450 until 1476, when he died.
  • 71. Among deaths for 1486 (275). Thomas Goldwell, citizen and fishmonger, of St Margaret Fish Street Hill, asked to be buried in the parish churchyard and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity in his will of 23 July, proved 14 October, 1485 (PROB 11/7, f. 122r).
  • 72. Among deaths for 1499 (where he is described as 'magister') (377). His wife Margaret was admitted with him (122), and so he is probably identifiable as the mercer John Mathew who served as alderman 1482–99 and mayor in 1490–1 (Beaven, II, 16; Thrupp, p 355). He died on 6 February 1499 and requested burial in the church of St Martin Orgar by his will proved 1 March in the same year (PROB 11/11, f. 237v).
  • 73. Probably the John Bodenham, citizen and waxchandler, who requested burial in the choir of St Gabriel Fenchurch Street by his will of 18 March, proved 7 April, 1480 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 290v). His wife Margaret is mentioned there, and a Margaret Bodenham is among admissions for 1479 (208).
  • 74. His death is not noted on BR, but he is apparently the John French, yeoman of the crown, citizen and baker, of St Magnus the Martyr, who wished to be buried in the same church in the chapel of St Thomas, according to his will of 8 March 1507, proved 5 October 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 149v). His wife and executrix was Agnes French and 'Magistra Agnes Frenshe' appears among admissions for 1511 (514) and deaths for 1514 (550).
  • 75. Among deaths for 1487 (285). Henry Crane, citizen and fletcher, who requested burial in the cloister of St Magnus Martyr, left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' brother- hood to pray for his soul in his will of 18 July, proved 4 August, 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 193v). His wife Katherine, to whom probate was granted, apparently appears among admissions for 1469 (122) and deaths for 1487 (286).
  • 76. Among deaths for 1470 (130). Perhaps the Thomas Porter of St Mary Magdalen, Southwark who wished to be buried in the Lady chapel there according to his will of 20 January, proved 27 January, 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 223v). There are also refer- ences in the will to his wife Joan and cousin John Porter and laity with these names are also among admissions for 1469 on BR (the latter entered as 'Master John Porter').
  • 77. Among deaths for 1471 (138). A Richard Tolle, citizen and tailor, who requested burial in the church of St Augustine Watling Street, left a will of 25 January, proved 15 February, 1471 (PROB 11/6, f. 4r).
  • 78. Among deaths for 1501 (396). Hugh Pemberton, master of the Taylors in 1481, MP London 1487, alderman 1491–1500 (Beaven, II, 18; Thrupp, p 359). By his will of 7 September 1500, proved 28 January 1501, he requested burial in the choir of St Martin Outwich (Canterbury Cathedral Archives: Register F, f. 21r).
  • 79. Among deaths for 1481 (229). A Henry Butler, citizen and skinner, requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's by his will of 14 November 1480, proved 1 March 1481 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 312r). The latter's wife was named Alice and an Alice Butler (Butiller) was admitted with Henry above (122).
  • 80. Among deaths for 1483 (247). Probably the John Abraham, citizen and goldsmith, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 10 October, proved 17 November 1482 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 338r). His wife Kath- erine, who survived him, is mentioned there. A Katherine Abraham was admitted with John below, in 1469 (122).
  • 81. Among deaths for 1474 (169). Probably the John Amell the elder, citizen and cutler, parishioner of St Magnus Martyr, who requested burial in his parish church or Whittington College. His will of 7 February was proved 26 February, 1474 (PROB 11/6, f. 95v).
  • 82. Walter Bellinger, Ireland King of Arms, made the first grant of arms to the parish clerks' fraternity in 1469 or 1470, hence presumably his admission here. He died in May 1487. See FW Steer, The Armorial Bearings of the Worshipful Company of Parish Clerks, (privately printed 1975), p 1.

Probably the John Pay who requested burial in the body of St Benet Gracechurch by his will of 8 September, proved [no day given] October, 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 63v). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan Pay was admitted with John below (122), and is among deaths for 1496 (353).
  • 85. Among deaths for 1476 (187). Perhaps the Gilbert Hampton, citizen and skinner, of St Olave Southwark who wished to be buried in the church of the Greyfriars in London. He left various bequests to priests and parish clerks for participation in his sung obsequies by his will of 1 September, proved 25 September, 1475 (PROB 11/6, f. 146r).
  • 86. Presumably the layman of this name among deaths for 1481 (229). A John Hunt, citizen and grocer, requested burial in the church of All Hallows the Less by his will of 16 October 1478 proved 8 (?)July 1481 (PROB 11/7, f. 97v).
  • 87. Among deaths for 1477 (194). A William Power, citizen and painter, yeoman of the Chamber of Guildhall, requested burial in Guildhall Chapel if he died in London by his will of 4 April, proved 16 May, 1477 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 205v). He was a parishioner of St Lawrence Jewry, and left bequests to the priests, clerks and chil- dren of the Chapel.
  • 88. Among deaths for 1484 (257). Lettice Lee, wife of Richard Lee, alderman, admitted above (121). She requested burial in her husband's tomb in St Stephen Walbrook by her will of 16 October 1482, proved 9 February 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 364r).

By her will of 27 June, proved 14 July, 1508, she requested burial with him in the choir of St Martin Outwich (PROB 11/16, f. 15v). She left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for herself and her husband 'in the nowmbre of the brethren and sistern...passed to god' and was also a sister of the Fraternity of Sixty Priests to which she left 40s for inclusion on its bede roll.
