  • 3. Among deaths for 1498 (368). Perhaps the Thomas Pettit (Petyt), citizen and tailor, who requested burial in the church of St Magnus Martyr where his late wives Margery and Katherine were buried by his will of 16 February, proved 25 March, 1498 (PROB 11/11, f. 160r).
  • 4. The English form of the title used for a Benedictine monk.
  • 5. John Cossall, citizen and butcher, left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity in order to pray for his soul by his will of 16 November 1496, proved 3 September 1497 (PROB 11/11, f. 8v). He requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Shambles in the place where his late wife Agnes was buried. This is perhaps the Agnes Cossall among admissions for 1473 and deaths for 1493 (154, 331).
  • 6. William Moot, citizen and plumber, requested burial in the church of St Katherine Coleman Street where his late wife Margaret was buried by his will of 26 December 1495, proved 21 January 1497 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 119r).
  • 7. Nicholas Egerton, canon of the hospital of Elsing Spital, was ordained subdeacon on 24 May 1494, deacon 19 May 1497 and priest on 23 September 1497 (Davis, 10810).
  • 8. Among deaths (as Salewes) for 1501 (393). Probably the Master Robert Sawlis (Saluse) who is noted as a parish chaplain of St Olave Southwark at a visitation of October 1492 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Morton f. 79v).
  • 9. Among deaths for 1511 (515). Perhaps the John Damsell, noted as a chaplain of St Margaret Southwark at a visitation of October 1492 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Morton f. 79v).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1501 (393). John Fish, priest, of All Hallows the Great who requested burial in St Katherine's charnel there by his will of 23 August 1500 (no probate) in which he left 12d to the Fraternity of St Nicholas (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 209v). A John Fish (Fyssh) of London diocese was ordained priest on 1 June 1493 on the title of Elsing Spital (Davis, 14840).
  • 11. Among deaths for 1502 (408). He was probably the William Edmunds (Edmondes) who was a lay clerk at St George's Chapel Windsor 1478–83 as noted in its attend- ance book and treasurer's rolls (St George's Chapel Archives: v.B.2, xv.34.59). He was also master of the choristers there in 1479, informator choristarum of Eton College 1484, a gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1485 and possibly a clerk at St Mary at Hill in 1490–1, whose death is recorded in the churchwardens' accounts of St Margaret Westminster by 1502 (Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix I and Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians).
  • 12. William Walton, parish clerk of St Mary Woolnoth and senior master in 1514 (541). His wife Margaret was apparently admitted in that year (543).
  • 13. William Dwight (Dwythe), parish clerk of St Katherine Cree and senior master in 1507 (457).
  • 14. Also among deaths for 1498 (368). A John Rush (Russhe) of London requested burial in the church of All Hallows Barking by his will of 20 March, proved 16 May, 1498 (PROB 11/11, f. 174v). This mentions three daughters, one of whom, Jane, may be identifiable with the Jane Roche among admissions for 1498 (367). John Rush's monument at All Hallows gave his date of death as 10 May 1498 (reproduced by HR Plomer, 'Two lawsuits of Richard Pynson', The Library, N.S. 10 (1909), 114–33). Interestingly, Richard Pynson, who printed a number of reli- gious and other books for sale by him, was apparently admitted shortly before in 1496 (352).
  • 15. James Yarford, Kt, master of the Mercers 1511, 1519, 1527; MP London 1509; alderman 1509–27 and mayor 1519 (Beaven, II, 22). By his will of 14 June, proved 26 June, 1527 he requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Michael Bassishaw (PROB 11/22. f. 159r). Presumably Joan, admitted here with him, was his wife, although he was later married to Elizabeth (502).
  • 16. Probably the William Bromwell, citizen and mercer, who requested burial in St Thomas the Apostle, as close as possible to the pew where he sat, by his will of 28 November 1536, proved 23 February 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 13r). He left 8d to the parish clerk present at his funeral and 10s each to the parson, priest and clerk of the church who were to celebrate a dirige and mass for him for a month after his death. His wife Jane is mentioned there and a Jane Bromwell is among admissions for 1514 (545) after the death of Elizabeth Bromwell, who is among admissions for 1498 (367) below and deaths for 1510 (508).
  • 17. Perhaps the John Moon (Mone), citizen and vintner, with property at East Green- wich, Kent, who requested burial in the church of the Blackfriars in London by his will of 3 February, proved 2 April, 1505 (PROB 11/14, f. 217r). His wife Anne is mentioned there and an Anne Moon was also admitted with John Moon below (367).
  • 18. Perhaps the Avery who was a son of Richard Rawson, mercer and alderman (Thrupp, pp 362–3). The latter appears among admissions for 1477 (192) and deaths for 1486 (275). An Avery Rawson is mentioned in the will of his brother Christopher, mercer and merchant of the Staple, of 30 September 1518, enrolled 24 February 1519 (Hustings Roll 138 (68) ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 627–8).
  • 19. Among deaths for 1500 (386). A William Arnold, parishioner of St Mary Magdalene Southwark, who requested burial in the Lady chapel there, left a will of 5 April, proved 20 November, 1499 (PROB 11/11, f. 316v).

  • 22. A John Garrard, citizen and cook, requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Shambles by his will of 24 October, proved 16 December, 1497 (PROB 11/11, f. 156r).
  • 23. An error for 'Johannis' although here the scribe seems to use the forms as inter- changeable. The same error occurs in the incipit for 1501.
  • 24. Among deaths (as William Belaw) for 1501 (393) Probably the Bellow whose will as curate of St Katherine Cree was proved in 1500 (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 147v).
  • 25. An Ellis Ainsworth (Eliseus Aynesworth) was ordained priest in London diocese on 6 April 1493, although originally from Coventry and Lichfield (Davis, 11821).
  • 26. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him as the Willan (sic) Dondy (or Dandy) who appears as the composer of kyries from c1500 in a Sarum processional now in Lambeth Palace Library (MS 438), but this is no more than a possibility.
  • 27. Presumably the John Marlow who was parish clerk of St Botolph Aldersgate and who joined the Holy Trinity fraternity there with his wife Agnes between August 1499 and August 1500 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 133). He was still in post in 1510 (Mc Murray, Index). Agnes does not appear on BR.
  • 28. Among deaths (as Richard Harlowys) for 1506 (454). Richard Harlews, citizen and grocer, was a parishioner of St Mary Magdalen Milk Street. He requested burial in St Paul's churchyard in the place where his parents were buried on the north side of St Paul's Cross (if he died in London) by his will of 11 September 1505, proved [1505] (PROB 11/14, f. 327r). His wife Joan mentioned there, is also among admis- sions below (374).
  • 29. Among deaths for 1509 (493). Probably the Rowland Bird (Byrde), parishioner of St Dunstan in the East, who requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's by his will of 12 July 1507, proved 15 November 1508 (PROB 11/16, f. 64r). His wife Alice is mentioned there and an Alice Bird (Byrde) is also among admissions below (374).
  • 30. Among deaths for 1518 (588). Perhaps the Roger Hall, citizen and grocer, who requested burial beside his late wife Agnes in the churchyard of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 14 April 1518, proved 17 March 1519 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 114v). An Agnes Hall was also admitted below (374) and is among deaths for 1501 (397).

  • 37. John Croote (Crote), parish clerk, presumably of St Michael Queenhithe where he wished to be buried, left a will of 29 March, proved 24 April, 1499 (Guildhall MS 9171, f. 170v). Described elsewhere however, as a parishioner of St Thomas the Apostle (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 119v). He requested burial in the churchyard of the former parish and left 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to bring his body to burial and perform his obsequies.
  • 38. Perhaps the John Bishop, stainer, of St Mary Matfellon, with property at Hinckley, Leics, whose will of 20 June, was proved 5 July, 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 163r). His wife Anne survived him, acting as executrix, and an Anne Bishop is among admissions below (374).
  • 39. Peter Johnson, citizen and draper, requested burial in the church of St Mary Wool- noth before the charnel there by his will (no probate) of 6 January 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 167r). He left 5s to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively.
  • 40. Alice Brice, widow of Henry Brice, sheriff in 1466, who requested burial next to her husband in the church of St Nicholas Acon by her will of 15 February, proved 4 March, 1499 (PROB 11/11, f. 238r).
  • 41. A marginal note 'Joan' is recorded against this name.
