NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Welhagh on Friday, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 21 Edward III.
Grymeston. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Margery his wife for their lives, by the demise of Edmund de Lexham, of Thomas Bret of Thornhagh by service of a knight’s fee.
He held no more lands &c. in the county.
He died on Sunday before St. Lawrence last. John de Hastynges, his son, aged 17 years, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at Camesale on Friday, the feast of St. Matthew, 21 Edward III.
Norton and Fenwyk. The manors (extent given) held jointly with Margery his wife, who still survives, of the grant of Ralph de Hastynges, knight, Edmund de Lexham, and Nicholas de Lammeir, chaplain, by fine levied in the king’s court, to the said Hugh and Margery, for their lives, with remainder to John, their son, and Hugh, brother of the said John, and to the heirs of the body of the said Hugh; and contingent remainder to the right heirs of Margery. The manors are held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, as of the honour of Pontefract, the fees and advowsons whereof are in the hands of Philippa, queen of England, by service of a knight’s fee.
Fisshelak and Thorne in Haitfeld. A messuage, 40a. land, and 5a. meadow, held jointly with the said Margery, of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Haitfeld; they were enclosed (appruiata) by John de Warenne, late earl of Surrey, by virtue of the king’s charter of licence, to be held of the earl for the earl’s life, and thereafter of the king in chief; afterwards the king by his charter granted the said manor of Haytfeld, with its members of Fisshelak and Thorne, to Edmund de Langeley his son. The manor is held of the king in chief, by knight’s service; but the said earl by his charter granted the said messuage, land, and meadow to the said Hugh and Margery and their heirs, to hold of the said earl for the earl’s life, by fealty and by service of rendering 8s. 2d. to him yearly and after his death to the king and his heirs; which rent the said Edmund de Langeley has, as pertaining to his said manor of Haitfeld.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 30 July last. John de Hastynges, son of the said Hugh and Margery, aged 18 years and more, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Suttone Scoteneye, Saturday next after St. Peter’s Chains, 21 Edward III.
Suttone Scoteneye. 2a. land, lying in a culture called Hentachele between the land of William le White on either side, held of the king in chief, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Sunday after St. James the Apostle last. John de Hastynges his son, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Swafham, 15 August, 21 Edward III.
Elssing. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Margery his wife, who still survives, for their lives, with remainder to John and Hugh, sons of the said Hugh and Margery, and the heirs of the said Hugh the son, of the earl of Gloucester, by service of a knight’s fee.
Wessenham. The manor (extent given), held jointly as above, with like remainder, of Henry earl of Lancaster, as of the purchase of Thomas late earl of Lancaster, his uncle, whose heir he is, as of the honour of Castelacre, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
He died on Saturday before St. James last. Heir as last above.

48. JOHN DE HAVERYNGTON, of Aldyngham.
Writ, 20 July, 21 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Kirkby in Kendale, Saturday the morrow of St. Bartholomew, 21 Edward III.
Wytherslak. The manor (extent given), held for his life of the king in chief, as of the lands late of William de Coucy now in the king’s hand, by fealty and service of 1d. yearly, with successive remainders to Michael, son of the said John, and the heirs of his body, Thomas and John his brothers and the heirs of their bodies respectively, and to the right heirs of the said John de Haveryngton of Aldyngham, by a fine levied in the king’s court.
Hotonroef. The manor held of the king in chief, as of the aforesaid lands of William de Coucy, for a term of eight years, to him and his heirs, by service of 8s. yearly, by the demise of John de Hoton, knight, at a rent of 10l. yearly.
He died on Monday after SS. Peter and Paul last. John son of Robert de Haveryngton, knight, aged 19 years and more, is the said John’s heir.
LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Dalton. in Fourneys on Monday after St. Bartholomew, 21 Edward III.
Thirnum. The manor (extent given), held for his life of the king in chief, as of the aforesaid lands of William de Coucy, and of Thomas de Thweng, by fealty, and service of 13s. 4d. yearly; whereof the king, after the lands &c. of the said William came to his hands, granted to Aymer Darcy 6s. 8d. yearly, to be received from the king’s pourparty of the said rent; with successive remainders to John son of Robert de Haveryngton, and the heirs male of his body, to Robert brother of the said John son of Robert, John son of the said John de Haveryngton, Thomas brother of the said John son of John, Michael brother of the said Thomas, and the heirs male of their bodies respectively, and to the right heirs of the said John de Haveryngton, by fine levied in the king’s court at York, 10 Edward III.
Resset in Ulverston. 20a. land, held for his life, of the king in chief, as of the aforesaid lands of William de Coucy, with successive remainders as abovesaid, according to the tenor of the aforesaid fine, by fealty only.
Ursewyk. Certain tenements, held in the same manner, rendering to the king 4s. yearly.
Ulvereston. A moiety of the manor, held for his life, with successive remainders as abovesaid, according to the tenor of the aforesaid fine, of the abbot and convent of the church of St. Mary, Fourneys, by homage and fealty, and by suit at three courts yearly of the said abbot and convent at Dalton, and by service of 15s. yearly.
Aldyngham. The manor (extent given) held for his life, of the same abbot and convent, by homage and fealty, by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee, by suit at the court of the said abbot and convent at Dalton every three weeks, and by service of 10l. yearly, with successive remainders as above.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

49. JOHN DARCY, le piere.
Writ, 30 May, 21 Edward III.
Endorsed by the escheator that the said John held no lands &c. in the county [of York], except within queen Philippa’s honour of Pontefract, and held of the said queen as of the said honour, within which no escheator of the king intermeddles.
Writ to the escheator, the previous return being insufficient, because it belongs to the escheator’s office to seize into the king’s hand all lands &c. of deceased persons holding of the king in chief, within and without any liberties whatsoever, whether the said lands are held of the king or of others, especially when all such lands, though not held of the king, are known to belong to him by reason of other lands held of him without the same liberties; concerning which lands the king ought not to be certified by any other than his own minister: He is therefore commanded, notwithstanding the liberty of the honour of Pontefract to take the said lands &c. into the king’s hand and make inquisition, &c. 20 June, 21 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at Temple Neusom, Thursday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 21 Edward III.
Temple Neusom. The reversion of the manor (extent given), held to him and the heirs male of his body, in form underwritten, viz. the said manor was at one time in the hands of the Templars, who held it of the honour of Pontefract, in frank almoin, and after their deposition King Edward I seized that manor into his hand; and afterwards, by composition made between him and the prior and brethren of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, it was agreed and granted that the said king should hold the manor to himself and his heirs for ever. Afterwards, King Edward II granted the said manor to Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, who still survives, for her life, without rendering anything for it yearly. The present king granted the reversion of the said manor to the said John Darcy and the heirs male of his body, and the said countess attorned for her estate to the said John. Afterwards, the said countess granted the manor to the said John for a term of twelve years not yet elapsed, and so that manor is held of Lady Philippa, queen of England, as of the honour of Pontefract. The abbot and convent of Salley take yearly, from the said manor, 6l. 13s. 4d. rent, by the grant of the Templars, and that rent they have taken time out of mind.
Notton. The manor (extent given) held by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Emeline sometime his wife, deceased, of the said queen of England, as of the honour aforesaid, by knight’s service, and by service of doing suit at the court of the said honour every three weeks.
Wollay. A capital messuage and five bovates of land similarly held by knight’s service, and by service of 7s. yearly.
Silkeston. The manor (extent given), similarly held by knight’s service.
Wollay. 40s. rent held of the said queen, as of the honour aforesaid, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county. One bovate of land of the aforesaid tenements in Wollay is charged, time out of mind, with 2s. yearly to the prior of St. Oswald’s, Nostell; and the said tenements in Wollay are charged from of old with 22d. yearly to John de Steynton and his heirs, 4d. yearly to Sir William Scot and his heirs, and 6d. yearly to the parson of the church of Derton and his successors; the manor of Silkeston is charged, time out of mind, with 9s. 9d. yearly to the prior of Pontefract and with 1d. yearly to John de Burgh and his heirs.
He died on 30 May last. John Darcy, knight, son of the said John Darcy and Emeline, aged 30 years and more, is their heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, 11 June, 21 Edward III (defective).
[Assheby] Mars. A messuage, two virgates of land, and 8 marks yearly rent, late of John de Mars, held of the king in chief by homage and fealty, and by service of offering his hand to the king’s stirrup (strupe) …; and another messuage &c., 60a. arable, 3a. meadow, 13 marks yearly rent and a rent of four capons from free tenants held in chief of the king of Scotland by service of offering his hand to the said king’s stirrup.
He died on 31 May last. John Darcy, … aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at St. Alban’s, 21 June, 21 Edward III.
Chesthunte. Two messuages, called Kesbrok and Tunford, 132a. arable, 18 1/2a. meadow, 20a. pasture, a water-mill, and 104s. rent, held of the earl of Rychemond, as of the manor of Chesthunte, by service of 50s., and 1lb. pepper yearly, and by suit at the said earl’s court four times a year; and a certain inn (hospicium) held of the countess of Penbrok, by service of 6s. 8d. yearly. A part of the aforesaid mill is held of John Andrew by service of 12d. yearly.
He died on 23 May last. John Darcy, his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Kyrkeby on Aysshfeld, Sunday before St. Barnabas, 21 Edward III.
Kyrkeby on Aysshfeld. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of Hugh de Audele, earl of Gloucester, for the life of the said earl, rendering yearly for the said manor and for the manor of Ekynton, 100l., on condition that, if the said rent, in whole or in part, should be in arrear for fifteen days, then it should be lawful for the said earl to enter upon the said manors and retain them.
He died on 30 May last. John Darcy, his son, is his heir and of full age.
DERBY. Inq. taken at Ekynton, …. after St. Barnabas, 21 Edward III (defaced).
Ekynton. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of Hugh Daudelee, earl of Gloucester, for the said earl’s life, rendering yearly for the same and for the manor of Kyrkeby 100l. &c. as above.
Beyghton. The advowson of the church, held of the king.
He died on 30 May. John Darcy, his son, is his heir.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Torkeseye, Wednesday before St. Barnabas, 21 Edward III (defaced).
Knayth. The manor (extent given), held of the bishop of Lincoln by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and 5s. yearly.
Gaytburton. A capital messuage, 140a. arable, 4a. meadow, and a windmill let for 10s. a year, held of Sir Norman de Swynford by knight’s service.
Upton and Kesseby. Two messuages, 60a. land, 30a. meadow, rents &c., held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service.
Upton. 48a. arable held of Edmund de Cornubia by knight’s service.
Stretton by Stowe. Lands and tenements (extent given) held of Sir John de Multon, knight, by knight’s service and 11s. yearly.
Suthorp. The manor (extent given) held of the earl of Lancaster by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Torkeseye. The king granted the manor to Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, for her life, and afterwards he granted the reversion thereof, with the advowsons of the priories of St. Leonard, Torkeseye, and of the nuns of St. Nicholas, Fosse without Torkeseye, to John Darcy ‘le piere’ and the heirs male of his body; and the said Mary attorned to the said John for the manor, and afterwards granted it to him for her life; she still survives.
He died on 30 May, 21 Edward III. John Darcy, his son, aged 29 years and more, is his heir.

50. BEATRICE, LATE THE WIFE OF PETER CORBET of Caus.

SALOP &c. Inq. made at Neuport, 24 September, 21 Edward III.
Caus, Munsterleye, Yokton, Worthyn, Wentenore, Schelve, Forton in Wales, Overgerthore, Nethergerthore, and Baughhaltre or Baghhaltre. The manors (extents given), including chaces at Caus called Hexstowe, Breychyn and ‘le Hay,’ parks at Munsterleye and Worthyn, a fulling mill at Worthyn, and a pond (vivarium) with fishery at Yokton, held of the king in chief, by service of two knight’s fees.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
Of the said manors and of the manor of Byneweston (extent given), which is held of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, one Thomas Corbet died seised in his demesne as of fee; from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter, and Emma the younger; and after his death, all the aforesaid tenements descended to the said Peter as son and heir; and after his death to Peter his son and heir, who married the aforesaid Beatrice, and gave all the said manors to one Hugh de Bergam, chaplain, to hold to himself and his heirs; and the said Hugh, in 31 Edward I, by a fine levied in the king’s court at York, surrendered the said manors to the said Peter son of Peter, and Beatrice his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Peter. The said Peter son of Peter, and Beatrice, were thus seised of the said manors during the whole of Peter’s life, and Beatrice afterwards demised the manor of Bynweston to one John Corbet, to hold for her life. The said Alice married Robert de Staff[ord], and from them issued Nicholas, who was her heir; and from him came Edmund, who had issue the present Ralph de Staff[ord], who is his heir. From Emma issued one Walter, who was her heir, who had issue one Brian, who was his heir, and from him issued Margaret his firstborn, and Elizabeth the younger, who are his daughters and heirs. The said Margaret is espoused to Robert de Harleye, and the said Elizabeth to Edmund de Cornubia. The said Robert de Staff[ord] and Alice his wife, Nicholas de Staff[ord], Edmund his son, Emma sister of the said Alice, Walter her son, and Brian his son, died, and afterwards the said Beatrice died, having no other estate in the aforesaid manors, than by virtue of the said fine.
She died on 28 August last. The aforesaid Ralph de Staff[ord] aged 36 years, Margaret wife of the aforesaid Robert de Harleye, aged 46 years, and Elizabeth, wife of the aforesaid Edmund, aged 42 years, are the heirs of the said Peter son of Peter.

Mamcestre and Keuerdeleye. The manors, held jointly with Joan his wife, who still survives, of Henry earl of Lancaster by knight’s service, of the gift of Thomas Grelle, brother of the said Joan, whose heir she is, to the said John and Joan, and the heirs of John.
He died on the eve of the Ascension last. Roger la Warre, son of John son of the said John, aged 18 years and more, is his heir.

Wakerle. The manor (extent given), including a fishery in the river, held jointly with the said Joan, of the grant of John de Claydon, parson of the church of Mammecestre, to them and the heirs of the said John, by fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.

Herdeby. 100s. yearly rent held, of the inheritance of the said Joan, of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, now in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service.

RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Bradecroft on Saturday, the eve of Holy Trinity, 21 Edward III.
Wodheved. The manor, held jointly with the said Joan, of Henry earl of Lancaster by service of nine parts of a knight’s fee; which manor John de Claydon, aforesaid, gave to the said John and Joan for their lives, with successive remainders to John, son of the said John and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of John son of Roger la Warre for ever.
He was seised of no other lands &c. in the county.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Stamford, Friday before Holy Trinity, 21 Edward III.
Swynesheved. The manor held jointly with the said Joan, of Henry earl of Lancaster by service of two knight’s fees; which manor Thomas Grelle gave to the said John and Joan and the heirs of John.
Sixhill. The manor held jointly as above, of the same earl, by service of two knights’ fees; which manor the aforesaid John de Claydon gave to the said John and Joan for their lives, with remainders to Roger la Warre and Elizabeth his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said John la Warre.
Bloxham. The manor held jointly as above of the same earl by service of a knight’s fee; which manor the aforesaid John de Claydon gave them for their lives, with remainders to John son of John la Warre and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of the said John la Warre.
Stamford. 8s. rent held jointly with the said Joan, of John earl of Warenne by fealty only; which rent the aforesaid John de Claydon granted to the said John and Joan and the heirs of the said John.

Middelton. The manor (extent given) held jointly with the said Joan, of the gift of the aforesaid John de Claydon, for their lives, with remainders to Roger la Warre and Elizabeth his wife and the heirs of their bodies, by fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster, 13 Edward III, with the king’s licence. The said manor is held of the king in chief, by service of rendering to him a sore sparrowhawk, or 2s., at the exchequer yearly.
Fokynton. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, held jointly as above, by the grant of Roger la Warre to them and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the said Roger and his heirs, of William de Kaynes by service of a knight’s fee.
Flecchyng. 6l. yearly rent of free tenants, held jointly as above, by the grant of Roger la Warre to the said John and Joan [and the heirs] of their bodies, of Thomas Camoys by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Porteslade. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, held jointly as above, by the grant of Thomas Grylle, knight, to the said John and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, of John Bardolf by service of two knights’ fees.

KENT. Inq. taken at Derteford, 26 September, 21 Edward III.
Newebery by Derteford. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of a knight’s fee. Hugh, father of the said Edmund, demised that manor to Adam Chees and Alice his wife, to hold for their lives, for 20l. yearly, and the said Alice still survives, and holds it. Marabilla, late the wife of the said Hugh, takes 10l. of the said 20l. yearly in part of her dower.
He died at Calays on 18 August last. His sisters, Margaret aged 18 years and more, married to John de Sancto Phileberto, knight, and Isabel aged 14 years and more, married to Henry de Burghasshe, knight, are his heirs.

BERKS. Inq. made at Walyngford, 7 September, 21 Edward III.
Sottewell. The manor (extent given), which Reynold de Pavely and Alice his wife held as her dower, came after her death to the hand of William Trussel; to whom the king granted the custody of the lands &c. of the said Edmund, during his minority. The manor is held of the abbot of la Hyde by service of 2s. yearly, and by suit of the king’s hundred of Morton every three weeks.
He died on 18 August last. His sisters, Margaret aged 18 years and more, married to John de Sancto Philberto, and Isabel aged 15 years and more, are his heirs.

The manors (extents given), a park with deer called Privet, and a park called Morgaston with a pond in Shirebourne St. John, and the office of forester of Pambere, came to the king’s hands by reason of the minority and death of the said Edmund, and are all in the custody of William Trussel of Cubbleston by the king’s grant. The manors of Basingge and Bromle, with the parks and pond, are held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee and a half. The manor of Abbodeston is held of the abbot of Hide by service of a knight’s fee. The office of forester of Pambere is held of the king in chief by service of 10s. yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. From Basingge are payable 45s. 4d. yearly to the farm of Basingstoke for a meadow and 100a. land, which are of the ancient demesne of Basingstoke.
He died at Calais on 18 August last. His sisters, Margaret aged 18 years and more, married to John de Sancto Philiberto, and Isabel aged 14 years on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last, are his heirs.

Halnakede. The manor (extent given), held of Isabella, queen of England by service of 1 1/2 knights’ fees, as of the fee of Robert de Monte Alto, including 19a. meadow at Arundell, a park, and a rent of 10 marks from Geoffrey de Ledes from the manor of Wodecote, which he holds for his life, and which, after his death, remains to the right heirs of the said Edmund; and time out of mind, the manor of Halnakede has been charged yearly, against Christmas, with the second best pig (porco secundo meliori), and the second best tree in the foreign wood for the house of lepers called Lodesdoune, and also with a pig and two trees for the house of lepers of St. James without Chichester.
Walberton. The manor (extent given) held of Isabella, queen of England, by service of a knight’s fee, as of the fee of Robert de Monte Alto.
Bernham. The manor (extent given) held of the said queen by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, as of the same fee.
Midelton. The manor (extent given) held of the said queen, as parcel of the manor of Halnakede by service as above.
The aforesaid manors were in the custody of William Trussel of Cubeleston, on the day the said Edmund died, by the king’s grant, by reason of the said Edmund’s minority.
He died on 18 August last. Heirs as last above.
Writ of dedimus potestatem to Roger de Pykeryng, to admit the guardians of Henry de Burgherssh, a minor, who married Isabel, sister and one of the heirs of the said Edmund, and the attorneys of the said Isabel, and of Margaret her sister, the other heir of the said Edmund, to be present at the making of the assignment of dower to Elizabeth, late the wife of the said Edmund, 3 November, 21 Edward III.

Shireburne. The manor, except the parks of Prevet and Mourgarstone and the pond, held for life by the demise of John de Sancto Johanne his brother, of the inheritance of the aforesaid Margaret and Isabel, of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.

He died on Friday, the feast of St. Andrew last.
