NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Nottingham, Sunday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III (defaced).
	[Cotgrave.] (fn. 1) A messuage and five bovates of land, held of the king in chief by reason of the custody of the lands of the priory of Lenton which are in the king’s hand, service not specified. He held no other lands, &c. [in the county]. [His sisters (?)], Helen, aged 25 years, and Isabel, aged 23 years, are his heirs.

	Legh Cumbreye. The hamlet (extent given) held of the king in chief by serjeanty, viz. by service of finding a man with the king in Wales in time of war for 40 days at his own charges. He died on 18 August last. John his son, aged 22 years at the feast of St. James last, is his heir.

	She held no lands &c. in the county on the day she died. Date of death and heir not known.

WORCESTER.	Inq. made at Pershore, Monday after St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Quenhull. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, by service of rendering yearly at the exchequer a hound (unum canem de mota) by the hands of the sheriff of Worcester. She held no other lands, &c. in the county. She died on Thursday, the feast of St. Gregory the Pope, last. Her daughters, Margaret, aged 11 years and more at Easter last, and Elizabeth, aged 9 years at Whitsunday last, are her heirs.

GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Teukesbury, Monday the morrow of Holy Trinity, 23 Edward III.
	Walton Kerdyf. The manor, viz:—A knight’s fee and a half held of the earl of Gloucester by knight’s service. The said manor of Walton was assigned to Hugh de Audeleye and Margaret his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of Gilbert de Clare, late earl of Gloucester and Hertford, in the said Margaret’s pourparty of the fees. She held no other lands, &c. in the bailiwick. She died on Thursday in the first week of Lent, 23 Edward III. Her daughters, Margaret, aged 11 years, Elizabeth, aged 9 years, and Eleanor, aged 7 years, are her heirs.

WARWICK.	Inq. taken at Alcestre, Tuesday after St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Wilmecote. John de Wynecote, late her husband, died seised of certain lands &c. at Wilmecote which he held of Laurence de Hastinges, late earl of Pembroke, by knight’s service; and after his death the said earl took the said tenements into his hand, as guardian, by reason of the minority of the four daughters and heirs of the said John de Wynecote. Whereupon one John de Hampton, knight, now deceased, married the said Joan, and bought of the said earl the wardship and marriage of the said four daughters and heirs, and also the custody of the aforesaid lands, &c. until the full age of the said heirs. Thus the said Joan, on the day she died, had no interest (nichil) in the said tenements, except only with the executors of the said John de Hampton, her second husband. She held no other lands &c. in the county, nor had she any in co. Leicester.

	Writ, after the death of the said Eleanor, who held in dower of the heir of Laurence de Hastinges, earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, 20 June, 23 Edward III.
WARWICK.	Inq. made at Warwick, 6 July, 23 Edward III.
	[W]ylmekote. A third part of a messuage and of a carucate of land, and 40s. rent, held in dower of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, who held of the king in chief, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. [John de Hampton had not a wife Joan who held of the heir of Laurence de Hastinges, earl of Pembroke. (fn. 2) ] She held no other lands, &c. in the county. She died on 10 June last. Elizabeth daughter of John de Wynnekote, deceased, aged 9 years and more at the feast of the Purification last, is heir of the said John, and also heir of the aforesaid lands, &c. which the said Eleanor so held in dower.

HUNTINGDON.	Inq. taken at Brampton, Tuesday the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 23 Edward III.
	Lemynge. The manor (extent given), held for life of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, who held the said manor of the king in chief by knight’s service, by the gift of the said Laurence after the latter married Agnes, daughter of Roger de Mortuo Mari. He died on Wednesday before St. Barnabas last. John, son and heir of the aforesaid Laurence, aged not fully two years, is his heir.

254.	AGNES, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN BERNARD, of Brodetoun.
	Writ, 14 July, 23 Edward III.
WILTS.	Inq. taken at Marlebergh, Thursday after St. James, 23 Edward III.
	La Brodetoun. A messuage and a carucate of land containing 80a. arable and 5a. meadow, held to herself and John, her husband, for their lives, by the grant of John, their son, in 18 Edward III, with successive remainders to the said John their son and the heirs of his body, Thomas, brother of the said John, and the heirs of his body, and Richard, brother of the said Thomas, and the heirs of his body. John, Agnes, John and Thomas are dead, without heir of the bodies of John and Thomas; and Richard is of full age, and survives. The tenements are held of the king in chief, as of the manor of Hampstede Mareschall, now in his hand, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. She died on Monday in Whitsun week last.

	Shaftesbury. 16s. yearly rent with the profit issuing from a moiety of the toll of the market worth 20s. yearly, held of the heirs of John de Burgo, minors in the king’s wardship, by service of rendering 1d. yearly. She died on the eve of St. Margaret last. John her son, aged 20 years and more, is her heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Bettesthorn, on Thursday after St. Michael, 23 Edward III.
	Bettesthorn and Asshele. Two messuages, two carucates of land, 20a. meadow and 2a. wood, held for her life of the heir of John de Mynsted by service of 13s. 4d. yearly. She died on Sunday before St. Margaret last. All the aforesaid lands, &c. remain to John, her son and heir, aged 20 years, as had of the gift of John de Mere and William de Bettesthorn to her and the heirs of her body.

ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Neuport, Saturday after the Epiphany, 23 Edward III.
	Kyngeswell. A messuage and 42a. land, held of the priory of St. Helen in the Isle of Wight, which is in the king’s hand, by service of 10s. yearly, and by suit of court. The prior used to have wardship and marriage there. He died on 26 March last. Simon his son, aged 19 years, is his heir.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS.	Inq. taken at Hedon, Thursday, 7 January, 23 Edward III.
	Etherdwyk. A messuage, a toft, a bovate and a half of land, and 18d. rent, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by fealty and by service of rendering to the king 2s. at the feast of St. Martin and 4s. on Whitsunday, and to the abbot of Thornton 12d. yearly. A free tenant pays the aforesaid rent of 18d. yearly for half a bovate of land which he holds in service. He died on Wednesday, 2 September last. John his son, aged six …, is his heir.

	Hornseburton. A messuage and a third part of a bovate of land, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of an eleven hundred and fiftieth part of a knight’s fee, and rendering to the king 2d. yearly at the manor of Brustwyk. He died on Monday, 27 July last. John his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

	Writ, after the death of the said William, who held of the priory of St. Andrew, Northampton, which is in the king’s hand, by reason of the war between him and his adversaries of France, 28 July, 23 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Brackelee, 11 August, 23 Edward III.
	[Unspecified.] 26a. arable, 4a. meadow, and a messuage, held of the above-named priory, to him and the heirs of his body by knight’s service and paying yearly for the aforesaid messuage 4s. The reversion of 13a. land, which John and Thomas, his sons, hold for their lives, which, after their death, ought to remain to his heirs. He died about the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last. John his son, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

	Runham. A third part of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, in socage, by service of a third part of two [measures (modiorum)] (fn. 3) of wine, and a third part of 200 ‘permeyns’ paid at the exchequer, or 6s. 8d. The pleas &c. of court are worth nothing yearly, because the customary tenants are dead. He died on 2 October last. Robert his son, aged six years and more, is his heir.

	Blakemore. The office of forester (balliva forestarie) of a moiety of the king’s forest of Blakemore, held of the king in chief by service of being the king’s chief forester in fee of the said moiety, and rendering 4s. yearly at his exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Dorset. The said office is worth nothing yearly beyond the said rent, because there are no deer in the forest. Crockerestok. A messuage, 40a. arable and a water-mill held of John Plombere by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Stokbruton. 40a. land held of Lora, late the wife of Herbert de Sancto Quintino, by service of rendering 2s. 3d. yearly. Crokkerestokk. 20a. land held of the abbot of Glastonbury by service of rendering 2s. yearly. 	Grendon. He held no lands, &c. in the county on the day he died, because about the feast of the Ascension last, he by his charter gave all his lands, &c. in Grendon, held of the said heir, as of the manor of Yerdele, to Hugh his son and his heirs, by virtue of which gift the said Hugh was seised for a great time during the life of David his father; and the said Hugh gave all the said lands, &c. to Thomas de Ramrugge, clerk, and his heirs, and he holds them now.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Cosham by Porcestre, Tuesday after St. Mark, 23 Edward III.
	Cosham. A messuage, 32a. land of assart of the king’s forest of Porcestre, 1a. meadow and 10s. rent, held of the king by service of finding an armed man for the defence of the king’s castle of Porcestre in time of war for forty days, viz. at his own charges for eight days, and at the king’s wages for thirty-two days, rendering besides for the same to the king, by the hands of the sheriff of Southampton, 10s. yearly at the exchequer, The said tenements in time of peace are worth 20s. yearly beyond the said rent, but in time of war are worth nothing beyond the said rent and service. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick. He died on Palm Sunday, 23 Edward III. William Wanstede, his son, aged 25 years, is his heir.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS.	Inq. taken at Hedon, Thursday, 15 December, 23 Edward III.
	Hornseburton. Eleven tofts and ten bovates of land, held jointly with Agnes, his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by the gift of Stephen Hautayn, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a thirty-sixth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit at the king’s wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks. Mapelton. A messuage, three tofts, and seven and a half bovates of land, similarly held of Richard de Sancto Quintino, by knight’s service. He died on Saturday, 1 August last. Thomas, son of the said Walter and Agnes, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

276.	HENRY TRENCHART or TRENCHARD.
	Writ, 7 May, 23 Edward III.
ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Neuport, Saturday after St. Dunstan, 23 Edward III.
	Shaldeflutte. The manor, held of the king, as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrouk, by knight’s service and doing suit at the court of knights at Neuport every three weeks; and he had it of the gift of Richard de Bourne, clerk, to him and Eleanor his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, by fine levied in the king’s court, which Eleanor died ten years ago. He held nothing else on the day he died. He died on Monday in the second week of Lent last. Giles his son, aged 35 years, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON; ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Neuport, Thursday, 31 March, 25 Edward III.

	Writ, 8 January, 23 Edward III.
MIDDLESEX.	Inq. 28 April, 24 Edward III.
	London. Parish of St. Clement Danes without the Bar of the New Temple. A messuage held of the king in socage, by fealty, and service of 18d. yearly, payable at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Middlesex. Soon after the death of the said John, one Simon le Barbour, now surviving, and Cicely his wife, now deceased, daughter and heir of the said John Barbour, entered upon and occupied the said messuage, and took the profits thereof for the whole life of the said Cicely, and they did not follow the mode and process of the office of escheator, nor had they seisin of the said messuage by livery of the escheator. The said Simon begat of the said Cicely, one William, who died in the lifetime of the said Cicely. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died without heir on Monday in the fourth week of Lent last.

	Stenybury. The manor, held jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives, by fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief, as of the honour of the castle of Carsbrook, by service of six marks yearly, payable in the castle of Carsbrok, and also by doing suit at the court of knights at Neuport every three weeks. He held nothing of other lords. He died on 4 June last. William his son, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

He died on Tuesday after the Conception of the Virgin Mary last. Robert his son, aged nine years and more, is his heir.

	Cleyndon. The manor, held for his life of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, earl of Pembroke, of the gift of the said Laurence; which manor is held of the prior of Rochester in gavelkind, of his manor of Darenth, by service of rendering 38s. 3 1/2d., and by doing suit of court at the said manor of Darenth every three weeks. After the said William’s death, it ought to remain to John de Hastynges, son and heir of the said earl. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Tuesday before the Annunciation last. The said John, heir of the said earl, is two years of age.

The said tenements were in the hands of tenants holding freely as in the king’s ancient demesne, who rendered yearly for the same 68s., but they are now dead, except ten, who render yearly 36s., the other tenements standing vacant. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 12 March, 23 Edward III, as is said. John de Hastinges, son of Laurence de Hastinges, his kinsman, aged 1 1/2 years, as the jurors understand, is his heir.

	Cleyndon. The said Laurence was seised of the manor by hereditary succession, after the death of John his father, after whose death the king had the wardship of the said Laurence by reason of his minority. Afterwards, in his seventh year, the said Laurence married Agnes, daughter of Roger de Mortuo Mari, and in his twenty-second year, after the king had taken his homage and restored to him his lands, he demised the said manor to William de Hastynges, now deceased, for his life; and thus the said Laurence was seised of the said manor, after he married the said Agnes, and could dower her.

	Benham. 	Moerton. A moiety of the manor (extent given, showing decrease in value of the land), held with the other moiety, which Robert de Bourghcher lately held of the king in chief, by service of finding a horse, price 5s. and a [leather sack], with a skewer (chevili) for attaching the said sack in the king’s army in Wales for forty days. He died on Wednesday after the Translation of St. Thomas [the Martyr] last [viz. 8 July]; and [had] a daughter and heir called Mary, a minor, aged 15 days, in the king’s wardship, who died on Tuesday after St. Bartholomew last. Nicholas, son of Nicholas de Sandwico, is heir of the said Mary. [John] de Sandwico, married Agnes Daverenges, who was seised of a moiety of the said manor. From the said John and Agnes [descended John and] Nicholas; from the said John son of John, descended the right of the said moiety to Juliana his daughter and heir, who married John de Segrave, and from them descended the right of the said moiety to John de Segrave, their son and heir; from whom the right descended to Mary his daughter and heir, who has died without heir of her body, so that the right reverted to Nicholas de Sandwico, son of the aforesaid John and Agnes, and uncle of Juliana, grandmother of Mary; and from the said Nicholas the right descends to Nicholas de Sandwico, as his son and heir, aged 50 years and more.

Nicholas de Sandewico is her kinsman and heir of the manor aforesaid, because one Agnes Daverenges, who was seised thereof married John de Sandwico, and from them issued John and Nicholas: from Agnes the manor descended to John as her son and heir: from him it descended to Juliana, his daughter and heir: she married John de Segrave, and from her the manor descends to John de Segrave, her son and heir: and from him to Mary his daughter and heir, who died without heir of her body, so that the right of the said manor reverted to the said Nicholas de Sandwico, son of the said Agnes and uncle of the said Juliana, grandmother of the said Mary. From the said Nicholas, the right descends to Nicholas de Sandwico, his son and heir, kinsman and heir of the said Mary. The said Mary had no lands &c. in the county of the inheritance of John de Segrave, her grandfather. The said Nicholas is 40 years of age and more. A pedigree as above is given at the foot.

John, son of Stephen de Segrave, is her kinsman and heir of the said manor, because John de Segrave, lord of Segrave, had two sons, Stephen and John, which John son of John married Juliana, daughter of John de Sandwyco: from the said John the manor descends to John de Segrave his son and heir; and from him to Mary his daughter and heir, who died without heir of her body; whereby the right of the said manor reverted to the said Stephen, brother of John, husband of Juliana, and uncle of John, father of Mary; and from the said Stephen the right descends to the said John de Segrave, now lord of Segrave, as kinsman and heir of the said Mary, aged 30 years and more. 	Great Perndon. Lands &c. held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, by the gift of Sir John de Baude, Robert de la Lee and Thomas de la Lee to the said Richard and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, which lands, &c. with 14a. land, which Taillefer de Wynchestre, father of the said Richard, and Elizabeth his wife alienated to Sir William Bonevyle and Walter Spencer in fee simple, are a third part of the manor of Great Perndon. The said third part of the manor is held of the king, as of the honour of Boulogne, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and by suit at the court of the said honour at Wytham every month and suit at the hundred of Herlawe. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 2 October last. Isabel his daughter, married to Geoffrey de Sonynggelegh, was his heir, and of full age: she survived her father 16 days and the said Geoffrey still survives. John, son of the said Geoffrey and Isabel, aged 1 year at Christmas last, is now heir of John Evenyng and of the said Isabel.
