[Writ to the mayor of London, the king’s escheator there (missing).]
LONDON. Inq. Monday after St. Ambrose, 17 Edward III.
Parish of St. Katherine in the Ward of Aldgate. Four shops, old and ruinous, with a garden annexed, held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He died on the morrow of the Purification last, as the jurors understand. William his son, aged 15 years, is his next heir.

SALOP. Inq. made at Neuport, 6 March, 17 Edward III.
Aderdeleye. The manor (extent given) held, of the inheritance of Margery his wife, of the king by service of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands in the county.

KENT. Inq. Tuesday after St. Valentine, 17 Edward III.
Chilham. The manor held with Margery his wife, who still survives, one of the sisters and heirs of Giles de Badelesmere, as of her pourparty of the said inheritance, of the king rendering 20s. for the ward of the castle of Dover every twenty-four weeks.
Hothfeld. The manor held with the said Margery, as above, of the inheritance aforesaid, of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of half a knight’s fee.
Bleen. The manor similarly held, of the earl of Gloucester by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Wolryngton. The manor similarly held, of the abbot of Faversham in free socage by service of 2s. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Blaneford on Thursday after St. Matthias, 17 Edward III.
Tarente Ruysscheustone. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held, of the inheritance of Margery his wife, of dame Elizabeth de Bourgh by service of half a knight’s fee.
Couekesdich. A moiety of the hundred held of the said inheritance, service unspecified.

NORFOLK and SUFFOLK. Inq. made at Norwich on Saturday the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 17 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Wysete. Five messuages, 100a. arable and 100s. rent, held jointly with Margery his wife of the king in chief, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee.
NORFOLK. Hakeforde. The manor with the advowson of the church, held jointly as above, of William de Calthorp by service of half a knight’s fee.
Whytewell. The manor held jointly as above, of Roger Geney in chief by service of a knight’s fee and a half.
Watton. The manor held jointly as above, of John de Segrave, of the right and inheritance of the said John’s wife, of the earldom of Norfolk by service of a knight’s fee.
Holt and Cleye. A moiety of the manors, with the advowson of the church of Cleye, held jointly as above, of the honour of Aumarle by service of a knight’s fee and a half.
Hoghton. A moiety of the manor held jointly as above, of the count of Ew in chief by service of 20s. and 4 bushels of wheat yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the said counties.
Penteneye. The patronage of the priory, when void, pertains alternately to the manors of Whytewell and Watton.
He died on Saturday next after the Purification last. Heir as above, aged 15 years.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Saturday after St. Gregory the Pope, 17 Edward III.
Preston. A parcel of garden containing 1r., 50a. arable, 5a. meadow, 1a. pasture, 3r. wood and 13s. 4d. assised rent yearly &c. held of the manor of the said town, of the inheritance of Margery sometime his wife, by service of rendering 2s. 3d. yearly for the ward of the castle of Roucestre.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

YORK. Inq. Monday before St. Gregory the Pope, 17 Edward III.
Garton and Housom. The manors (extents given), including a certain yearly rent of free tenants in Brakene, Middelton, Northdalton, Naburn and Tibethorp, parcel of the said manor of Garton, held of the king in chief as of the crown, as parcel of the castle and manor of Helmesley; which castle and manor, with their members &c. are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a barony and by other services, as is more fully contained in the inquisition and extent of the said castle and manor, now returned into the king’s chancery.
Walter Espek, sometime lord of the manor of Helmesley, ancestor of the said William de Ros, and founder of the priory of Kirkeham, by his writing granted time out of mind to the prior and convent of Kirkeham and their successors for ever, 100s. yearly rent, to be paid at Hamelak from his chamber, at the terms of St. Martin and Whitsunday equally, for tithe of meal (?) (pro decima de mala) of his manors, and for tithe of his venison there three fitting deer yearly, viz. one in ‘le gres’ and two in ‘le fermison’; and the said William de Ros now deceased, by his writing granted for himself and his heirs that the said prior &c. and their successors should receive the said rent at Garton at the said terms, viz. 53s. 4d. from four bovates of land there which William de Wodehous and Beatrice his wife sometime held, and 46s. 8d. from four bovates of land there which Reginald de Salden sometime held, viz. in A.D. 1331, to be received for a term of 45 years then next ensuing, and after the completion of the said term the said, prior &c. shall receive the said 100s. from the chamber of the said William de Ros for ever; and the said prior &c. were seised of the said rent and continued their seisin thereof peaceably until the death of the said William.
The houses and buildings now existing in the said manor of Garton cannot be maintained and repaired for less than 40s. yearly, if they are to be kept in proper (sufficienti) condition until the lawful age of the said William’s heir, nor the houses and buildings in the said manor of Housom for less than 4l. yearly.

YORK. Inq. taken on Saturday before St. Gregory the Pope, 17 Edward III. (partly illegible).
Helmesley. The castle and manor, including two gardens called ‘le Ortyerdes,’ and parks called ‘le Neupark’ and ‘le Oldpark’ with deer, together with the manors of Harum, Housom, Garton and Lynton, and certain tenements in Pokley, Bodlom, Carleton and ‘le Haghe,’ pertaining to the said castle and manor (extents given), held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a barony, and by doing suit at the county (court) of York every six weeks and at the trithing (courts) of Craykhowe and Yarlescros once a year, and at the wapentake (courts) of Ridale, Bulmere, Dikeryng and Buccros once a year, and by service of rendering to the king yearly 11s. by the hands of the sheriff of York for the fines of the wapentakes; and there are in Lynton 120a. (?) of assart of the forest of Galtres which the said William held of the king in chief by service of rendering to the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of York, 20s. yearly.
William de Ros, father of the said William, now deceased, by his writings granted the following to the underwritten, who still survive, for their respective lives:—
To John de Arnhale, 4l. yearly rent from his tenants in Pokeley.
To William de Middelton, for his service, the keepership (custodiam) of a certain plot called ‘le Haghe’ in Helmesley, as William de Yolton had the same, saving the profits thereof to the said William de Ros and his heirs, taking for the same yearly for 10 weeks 1qr. of wheat, price 3s. 4d., from the said manor of Helmesley, and a robe yearly, price 13s. 4d. or 13s. 4d. for the said robe, and pasture for two of his cows in the old park of Helmesley, with the oxen of the said manor.
To William Starre, a robe yearly, price 20s., or 20s. for the said robe, to be received from the said manor of Helmesley.
The said William, now deceased, by his writings gave the following to the underwritten, who still survive, for their respective lives:—
To Geoffrey de [Ki]rkeby Usburne, for his service, 5qrs. and two hoppers (hop’) of wheat yearly, viz. for (every) ten weeks 1qr. of wheat, to be received from the castle of Hamelak from the said William and his heirs, and a robe yearly, price 10s., and 2s. rent yearly.
To John de la More, the office of porter of the castle of Hamelak, and 5qrs. of wheat yearly, viz. for (every) ten weeks 1qr. of wheat, and at the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr two hoppers (hop’) of wheat, to be received from the said castle of Hamelak.
To William de Kirkeby, for his service, a robe yearly, price 20s. to be received from the said manor of Helmesley.
To Isabel de Brighton, whom Thomas de Bubwyth married, 4qrs. 2 1/2 bus. of London wheat, viz. for (every) twelve weeks 1qr. of wheat, to be received from the said manor of Helmesley.
To Thomas le Armurer, a robe yearly, price 13s. 4d., to be received from his lands in Helmesley.
To Thomas de Overton, for his service, the keepership of the forestry of the said wood of Lynton, taking for the same yearly 5qrs. and two hoppers of wheat, viz. for (every) ten weeks 1qr., of wheat, to be received from the said manor of Lynton.
The said John de Arnhale, William de Middelton, William Starre, Geoffrey de Kirkeby, Thomas le Armurer, John de la More, William de Kirkeby, Isabel de Brighton and Thomas de Overton, by virtue of the grants aforesaid, were seised of the said rents &c. from the said manors of Helmesley, Pokeley and Lynton, and continued their seisin thereof peaceably until the day the said William de Ros died.
As regards the keepership of the said castle, with the parks there, there must be a constable, taking 3d. a day and a robe yearly, price 20s.; a parker, taking 1 1/2d. a day and a robe yearly, price 10s.; and a maker of the paling of the said parks, for repair of the same, taking every twelve weeks 1qr. of corn and rye, and for his wage 3s. yearly.
Within the said castle is a chapel, founded by the ancestors of the said William de Ros, time out of mind, and a chaplain celebrating daily in the said chapel for the souls of the ancestors and heirs of the said William for ever, taking yearly from the said manor of Helmesley for his stipend 5 marks, to him and his successors, chaplains, for ever; which chaplain and his predecessors were, time out of mind, seised of the said 5 marks yearly, and peaceably continued their seisin thereof until the day of the said William’s death.
The walls of the said castle and the houses and buildings within the same cannot be maintained and repaired for less than 6l. 13s. 4d. yearly, if they are to be kept in proper condition until the lawful age of the said William’s heir; nor the houses and buildings within the said manor of Lynton for less than 40s. yearly.
Sum of the values of the above manor of Helmesley with ‘le Haghe,’ of the lands &c. in Carleton, Bodlom, Harum and Pokeley, of the manor of Lynton, and the rents in Bildesdale, Fryton and Oswaldkirk. From whence there are due 11s. yearly for fines of the wapentakes by the hands of the sheriff of York, 20s. yearly for the said assart in Lynton, and divers charges in the castle &c. as above.
YORK. Inq. taken at Methelburn on Wednesday the feast of St. Gregory the Pope, 17 Edward III.
Seton. The manor, together with certain rents of free tenants in Wartre (extents given), including a little park with deer, a wood of oaks called Setonwod, a fishery in the water of Fulney and a ferry over that river, held as of the fee of Trussebutte, of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The prior of Wartre and the convent of the same place, by a certain writing indented, made by John sometime prior of the said house, are bound to the said William de Ros and his heirs in 20l. yearly.
Storthwayt. The manor, together with certain tenements and rents in Methelburn, Herlethorp and Folkerthorp pertaining to the said manor (extents given), held of the king as of the fee of Mortimer, which is in the king’s hand by the forfeiture of Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Fulford. The manor (extent given), including certain rents in the city of York, held of Walter de Heslarton and Eustacia his wife, as of the right of the said Eustacia, by knight’s service, and by rendering 8d. yearly for the fines of the wapentake. The said manor is charged in 60s. yearly to Alice, late the wife of James de Bosevill, who still survives, for her life, by the grant of the said Sir William de Ros because the said Alice was sometime conjoined (conjuncta) concerning the said manor with the said James.
York. 100l. rent yearly in the city received by the hands of the bailiffs thereof by the grant of the king’s progenitors, in exchange for the castle of Wark in the county of Northumberland; and the tenements from which the said rent issues are held of the king in burgage by service of ‘husgable’ yearly.

The said William de Ros, now deceased, by his writings granted the following to the underwritten for their respective lives:—
To Robert de Aymounderby, his yeoman, for his service, 46s. 8d. rent and a robe yearly, price 20s., to be received from the said manor of Storthwayt, by the hand of John atte Watr . ., and others.
To Thomas de Wylton 40s. rent yearly, to be received of all the lands &c. of the said William in Storthwayt and Methelburne aforesaid.
To John de la More, called ‘le Keu,’ 33s. 4d. rent and a robe yearly, price 20s., whereof 26s. 8d. yearly to be received from the said tenements in Methelburn, and the said robe and 6s. 8d. from the manor of Ros in Holdernesse.
To John de Ros, 46s. 8d. rent and a robe yearly, price 20s., to be received from the said tenements in Methelburn.
To Henry de la Chaumbre, 46s. 8d. rent and a robe yearly, price 20s., to be received from the said tenements in Methelburne.
The said Robert, Thomas, John, John and Henry still survive; and were peacefully seised of the said rents and robes from the time of the completion of the said writings until the death of the said William de Ros.
The houses and buildings in the manor of Seton cannot be maintained and repaired for less than 60s. yearly, if they are to be kept in proper condition until the lawful age of the said heir; and there must be a parker for the keeping of the park and of the deer and wood there, taking 2d. a day.
The houses and buildings in the manor of Storthwayt cannot be maintained &c., as above, for less than 13s. 4d. yearly; and there must also be a parker there, taking 2d. a day.
The houses &c. in the manor of Fulford cannot be maintained &c. for less than 13s. 4d. yearly.

LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Stathern 26 February, 17 Edward III.
Rademyld. The manor (extent given) held by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown. The pleas and perquisites of court are worth nothing yearly, because the tenants there do suit at the court of Beauver, co. Lincoln. There is there a warren called the warren of Beauver between the castle of Beauver and the town of Stathern without the park, and the soil thereof pertains to the townships of Stathern, Plungarth and Barkeston; and there are thorns growing which cannot be sold or cut because if cut they would never grow again, because the growth of the same would always be destroyed by the beasts of the aforesaid townships feeding there at all times of the year; and no lord there has sold or cut anything thereof, for the reason aforesaid. From the rabbits there [there was] no profit from the time of the death of the said William before Lent, because they were used (destricti) in the said lord’s lifetime for the enthronement of the archbishop of York, and for the lord’s maintenance, and sent to Stoke Daubeney from the feast of St. Michael to the day of his death. From the manor of Rademyle, Juliana, late the wife of Stephen Wyndout, received for her life for certain tenements which the said William de Roos acquired of her, 2qrs. of wheat, price 8s., and 1qr. of peas, price 2s., yearly.
Bottlesford. The manor (extent given), including a fishery in the Deven, held by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown; and the perquisites of the court are worth yearly 20s. and no more, because all the presentments of suit of free men and [all] pleas pertain to the court of Beauver, co. Lincoln. Certain tenants in Normanton render 8l. 17s. 7 3/4d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

LINCOLN. Inq. 5 March, 17 Edward III.
Lincoln City. 150 marks yearly, to be received by the hands of the bailiffs of the liberty of the city from the farms of the city, by the grant of King Edward II, as is more fully contained in the said king’s charter and in his letters directed to the said bailiffs, as follows, viz., that the said king granted, for himself and his heirs, to the said William and his heirs that they might receive 300 marks yearly from the farms of the city of York and of the said city of Lincoln, viz., 150 marks from each city, until the said king or his heirs should provide the said William and his heirs with 300 marks of land and rent yearly, to hold between the rivers Thames and Tees, or until the said king or his heirs should restore to the said William or his heirs the castle of Werk, which the said William granted and quitclaimed to the said king and his heirs. He held no other lands &c. in the said city.

LINCOLN. Inq. 2 March, 17 Edward III.
Beauver. The castle and manor (extent given), including lands in co. Leicester, rents in Wolsthorp, 100s. rent called castle ward, a close called ‘Holdpark,’ a pasture called Blakeberugh pertaining to the said castle, and a market every Tuesday, newly proclaimed, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown. And there are in rent paid yearly to the king for aid of the sheriff of Lincoln, 6l. 13s. 4d., and for aid of the sheriff of Leicester 4l.; and to the foreign bailiffs of Beauver for wardship of fees, castle ward, and collecting sheriff’s aid and fines, 66s. 8d.; for a chaplain celebrating in the chapel of the castle from of old (ab antiquo), 66s. 8d., and for bread, wine and wax, 2s.; and to master John de Pykworth, 40s.

LINCOLN. Inq. 1 March, 17 Edward III.
Uffyngton. The manor (extent given), including a wood called Freshreb, a fishery in the river Weland and rents in Talyngton, Casewike and Depyng, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown. Robert Flemyng, parson of the church of Beroughby, receives yearly from the manor by the grant of the said William de Ros, the king’s licence having been obtained as is testified by the king’s charter, 26l. 13s. 4d., half a cloth for a robe, price 40s., fur for three garments (garmamentis) and a hood, price 60s., ten ells of cloth for his robe at Whitsuntide, price 30s., with silk (cindone) for a lining for the said robe, price 40s.; and William de Brighton receives 4l. yearly from the manor.
LINCOLN. Inq. 27 February, 17 Edward III.
Freston with Boston. The manors (extents given), including perquisites of the market and fair of Boston, held, as in fee tail, with Margery his wife, who still survives, and the heirs male of their bodies, by the grant of King Edward II, as in the said king’s charter is more fully contained, of Roger Petwardyne by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown.
Whereof the king receives yearly for sheriff’s aid and view of frankpledge, 40s.; and there are paid [for light of the altar?] of St. Mary, Freston, 12d. yearly; Roger de Copeldike receives yearly 12d.; and Sir Ralph de Nevill of Raby receives yearly 11l. 4s. 11 3/4d.

LINCOLN. Inq. 25 February, 17 Edward III.
Melton. The manor (extent given), including 30a. salt meadow at Goushil pertaining to the said manor, whereof each acre is worth 4d. yearly and no more because it is often inundated by the water of the Humber, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown.
Lady Margaret de Roos receives from the said manor a yearly rent of 20 marks, by the deed of Sir William de Roos of Hamelak, the king’s licence having been obtained.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. 22 February, 17 Edward III.
Stoke Aubeney. The manor (extent given), including lands &c. in Stoke and Wylberston, a wood in the forest called Askeeceleshawe, and a wood called Derolveshill, of which manor he was enfeoffed jointly with Margery his wife, who still survives, held of the grant of Robert Flemmyg and Hugh Flemmyg, who were peacefully seised of the said manor by the enfeoffment of the said William de Roos, the king’s licence having been obtained, as it is more fully testified by the said king’s charter dated at the Tower of London, 1 July, 16 Edward III, and by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster on the octave of St. Michael, 16 Edward III, between William de Roos and Margery his wife, plaintiffs, and Robert Flemmyng and Hugh Flemmyng, deforciants, touching the said manor, whereby it was granted to the said William and Margery, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the chief lords of that fee, by the services thereto belonging, for ever, with remainder to the right heirs of thesaid William. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
From the said manor William de Recheford receives yearly 60s., which he recovered in an eyre of the justices at Northampton; and the sheriff of Northampton receives 4s. yearly for sheriff’s aid.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Stratford atte Bowe on Monday after St. Valentine, 17 Edward III.
Chyngelford. The manor held jointly with Margery his wife, who still survives, one of the sisters and heirs of Giles de Badlesmere, as of the inheritance of the said Margery of her pourparty of the inheritance of the heirs of Richard le Plays, as of the fee of Stanstedemonfchet in free socage by service of 1d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Bingham on Thursday before Palm Sunday, 17 Edward III.
Skerington. A quarter of a knight’s fee held by Robert de Whatton, and it shall do 25s. for relief when it happens.
Warsop. The advowson of the church, except the dowry of Margaret, late the wife of John de Roos, who was dowered thereof by the king’s escheator.
Orston, Screveton and Skerington. A moiety of a knight’s fee held by Geoffrey de Chalers and his wife, Richard de Walcfare and his wife, and John Bozoun, and it shall do 50s. for relief when it happens.
Staunton, Floubergh and Alverton. Two knights’ fees held by Geoffrey de Staunton.

[R]osse. The manor (extent given), except four carucates of land and a moiety of a capital messuage which are held of Herbert de Sancto Quintino by service of a twelfth part of a knight’s fee, held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumarle, by service of three-quarters of a knight’s fee, rendering to the king 5s. yearly for the ward of the castle of Skipsee, and also rendering 6s. 4d. yearly to the king at Hedon by the hands of the bailiffs of the liberty of Holdernesse for ‘sherevesgeld,’ and doing suit at the wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks; including waste lands in Sundirlandis, Langholmleyes, Southcrassenhowes, Metholm and Estkyme(?); 12s. 6d. yearly rent at Munkwyke from a free tenant, which tenement of Monekwyk the said William de Roos held of the provost of St. John of Beverley by paying 30s. yearly and by suit at the said provost’s court at the Bedern of Beverley every three weeks; 4l. yearly rent from free tenants at Merflete; 3s. yearly rent from a free tenant at Wythernwyke; 13s. 4d. yearly rent from freemen at Otringham; 60s. yearly rent from tenants for life at Waxham, which tenements are held of Thomas Hauteyn and Isabel his wife, as of the right of the said Isabel, by foreign service and by service of paying 14s. yearly; 10s. yearly rent from free tenants at Ulram; 40s. 4d. yearly rent from free tenants for life at Hedon; and a certain mere called Pidesee at Pidesee Burton, which the said William held by the king’s demise to him and his heirs for ever, rendering yearly to the king 15s. by the hands of the bailiffs of Brustwyk.
He died on 3 February last. Heir as above, aged 14 years on the feast of St. Dunstan last, and married in the lifetime of his father.
The said William by his writings gave to the underwritten, who still survive, the following yearly rents &c. from the said manor of Rosse for their lives:—
To Richard de Roos 100s. and a robe, price 20s., or 20s. for the said robe; to Luke de Saunford 20s. and a robe; to John de la Moer called ‘le Keu’ … and a robe, price 20s., or 20s. for the said robe … viz. 6s. 8d. of the said rent from the said manor of Rosse …; to John Salvayn 30s. and a robe, price 20s., or 20s. for the said robe; to Thomas de Ovreton, for his good service, 13s. 4d. and a robe, price 13s. 4d.; and to Margery de Mounceaux 20s. and a robe, price 20s., or 20s. for the said robe; and the said Richard, Luke, John, John, Thomas and Margery were peacefully seised of the said rents and robes from the time of the completion of the said writings until the day of the death of the said William.
And there is a rent of 2s. 7d. yearly to be paid to the king for tenements (?) in the borough of Hedon, 2s. 7d. yearly to a chaplain and his successors celebrating divine service in the church of All Saints, Preston, and 6d. yearly to [a chaplain and] his successors celebrating divine service in the chapel of St. Augustine’s, Hedon. …
