497.	PHILIP SON OF WILLIAM [MAUBAN]K.
[DORSET.]	[Proof of age] of Philip son of William [Mauban]k, kinsman and heir of Philip Maubank, deceased, who held of the heir of John Byset, lately deceased, ……… . . held of King (Edward II), in chief, lately a minor and in the said king’s wardship, 20 March, [7 (fn. 1) ] Edward III. (defective.)
	Walter de Wynterheie, aged 60 years, says that the said Philip son of William was 21 years of age on the feast of St. Gregory the Pope last, for he was born at Ramesham and baptized in the church there on the morrow of that feast by Sir John late rector in 5 Edward II; and this he recollects because he was then beyond the sea at Montpellier (in Monte Pusillano), and a fortnight afterwards he returned to his own country at Maidene Niweton near Ramesham. William de Kyvele, aged 60 years and more, says the like, and recollects it because on the same day a marriage was arranged (prelocutum) for Alice his daughter, who was married to John de Shirburn within a month after Easter following. Walter de Lyllington, aged 50 years and more, says the like, and recollects it because on the same day Edmund de Lillington his father died, and he entered upon his tenements and was expelled by John Paveli, but in the same year he recovered by writ of novel disseisin against the said John. William le Dean, aged 60 years and more, says the like, and recollects it because he had a wife Felicia who bore a son John, who was baptized in the said church on the morrow of the same feast of St. Gregory in the same year. John Daberon, of 60 years and more, says the like, and recollects it because he had a son William ordained to the order of subdeacon at Dorchester on Saturday after St. Gregory in the said year, 5 Edward II. Walter Foulke, of 50 years and more, agrees with the said John Daberon, and knows it because at that time he served John, rector of Ramesham. William le Irish aged 60 years, David Lombard of the same age and more, Thomas Kulneie aged 60 years and more, Thomas de Hidene aged 60 years and more, John de Bromhulle aged 60 years and more, and John Huchon aged 60 years and more, say the like and recollect it because on the morrow of the Epiphany in the same year, 5 [Edward II], divers robbers came to the house of the prior of Fromp[ton] at Ernelegh and robbed him of three horses, and they followed and captured them, and took them to the prison of Dorc[hester], which year of spoliation is written in the missal of the town of Ernelegh. John Biset came but had nothing to say why the king ought not to restore his inheritance to the said John, as of full age.

	Wrmenhale. A manor with a carucate of land, held of the earl of Gloucester by service of half a knight’s fee; and the honour of Gloucester on the day of the death of the said John de Rivere was in the king’s hand by reason of the death of Gilbert de Clare, then earl of Gloucester, and so the said tenements remain in the king’s hand on that account only. John his son, aged 22 years and more, viz.—from the day of the Conversion of St. Paul last, is his next heir.

	Wykes. A messuage and a carucate of land called ‘le Parkhalle,’ held of the earl of Norfolk, as (of) the manor of Wykes, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. Misteleigh. 7s. rent from a tenement sometime of John Bisouth, held of John de Sutton, knight, by service of 1d. yearly. He held no tenements, &c. of the king in chief in the county. Heir as above, aged 10 years and more. Petition to the king and council from John de Veer, earl of Oxford, showing that John Carbonel held of him certain lands and tenements, and died in his homage, after whose death the said John de Veer was seised of the wardship of the body of the heir of the said John Carbonel and of the lands which were held of himself; upon which a suggestion was made in chancery that the said John Carbonel held in chief of the king, and a writ issued to the escheator to seize and to enquire, and by the inquisition now taken and returned into chancery it is found that nothing is held of the king; wherefore the said John de Veer prays for a writ of ouster la mayn to the escheator, &c. 	Knolle by Bristol. The manor (extent given), including 100 acres of thorn lying in the king’s chace of Filwode, was held by the said William in 2 Edward III, of the king in chief, as of the honour of the castle of Bremsfeld, by service of doing fealty and suit at the court of Shernton, co. Wilts, which is a member of the same castle, every three weeks; and in the said year the same William alienated the said manor to Thomas de Gournai of Inglescumbe in fee, who after having seisin of the same, demised it to the said William for his life.

Estrop by Heyworth. A messuage with a carucate of land, held jointly with Felicia his wife, and after her death, to the heirs of the said William, as parcel of the said tenements in Bratton, of the said queen by the services aforesaid. 	Canewyk. A third part of a capital messuage called Ladicroft, and 16s. 8d. yearly rent from free tenants, held in dower of the inheritance of Guy, son and heir of Elias Martel, a minor and in the king’s wardship; which lands, &c., together with others, are called and are the manor of Canewyk, which whole manor is held of the king in chief, by service of finding for the king in his war an armed horseman for forty days at the expense of the lords of the same manor for the time being, and after the forty days at the king’s expense during the same war. The said manor was at one time in the seisin of Arnald Pelryn as of his own right, and he and his ancestors held the same of the bishop of Bayeux by certain services; and the same Arnald in the time of King John made insurrection against the king with other rebels, and by his forfeiture the said manor came to the king’s hands, as his escheat, who afterwards gave it to William Martel, progenitor of the said Guy who is his heir, to hold of the king and his heirs by the service aforesaid; and the said William and his heirs have held the said manor hitherto without any interruption.

The said tenements in Wuldon and Myndrom, and other tenements in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, are charged with a yearly payment of 40s. to Thomas de Baumburgh, clerk, for his life, by the grant of the said Richard, and the said tenements in Wuldon are charged with a yearly payment of 40s. to Walter de Craik, now knight, for his life, by the grant of the said Richard. His daughters, Agnes aged 27 years, whom Adam Graper married, Maud aged 23 years, whom Richard de Acton married, and Jacoba aged 9 years, are his next heirs.

	Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Lands, tenements, rents, &c. (extent given, with names of tenants), including twelve messuages in Horsmarketgate, seventeen houses on ‘le Denbrigg,’ a garden in Horsmarketgate, a plot by the New Gate, a void plot in ‘le Westegate,’ a plot in Daultonchere, a messuage in ‘le Bradechere,’ an empty house in Gripeschere, a plot in Senedgate, a plot in the suburb, 2a. land lying by ‘le Spenserland’ in Senedgate, 13s. yearly rent from a messuage bequeathed in the said Richard’s testament to a certain chaplain to celebrate for his soul, other rents bequeathed to the said chaplain, and a messuage which Richard de Aketon holds in ‘le Clos,’ which is bequeathed to the same Richard and Maud his wife, &c., all held in free burgage of the king, by service of 20d. yearly. The said Richard held no lands or tenements in chief of the king in the said town nor within its liberty, because all the said town, with a meadow adjoining, is held in free burgage of the king by service of 100l. 13s. 4d. yearly.
