Garton in Holdernesse. Four marks, 20d. rent, held of the king as above.

La Mouryate. A capital messuage, 60a. arable, 2a. meadow, and 5s. 6d. rent, held of the abbot of Schirborne in socage by service of 5s. yearly.

Aston by Byrmyngham. The manor (extent given), held for life, by the enfeoffment of James de Stafforde to Thomas de Maydenhathe and the said Isabel, sometime his wife, and to the heirs of the said Thomas, of Henry de Erdyngton by service of 2s. 2d. yearly.
Joan aged 34, Sibyl aged 30, Isabel aged 26, and Margaret aged 24, are daughters and next heirs of the said Thomas and Isabel.

Sonde and Wyke. The manor (extent given), including 12a. wood at ‘la Wyke,’ held of John earl of Surrey and Sussex, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, suit at his court of Lewes, and rendering 4 bushels of corn yearly for fencing his park of Dicheninge. And these tenements owe suit at the king’s county (court) of Sussex. Joan late the wife of Sir John de la Mare is dowered of all the above.

Exton. The manor, held jointly by the said Bernard and Agatha his wife, by the gift of Constance de Morteyn, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns; which Agatha survived the said Bernard, and in the time of Robert de Bruys, father of Robert de Bruys that now is, of whom the manor was then held by knight’s service, as of the honour of Huntingdon, enfeoffed Bernard de Bruys her son and heir of the said manor, who now holds it of the king in chief, as of the said honour now in the king’s hand by the forfeiture of Robert de Bruys that now is, by service of 1/8 knight’s fee.
HUNTINGDON. Inq. 2 April, 12 Edward II.
Conygton. The manor, sometime held of Robert de Bruys, late earl of Carryk, in chief, by service of a third part of 1/4 knight’s fee; which manor the said Bernard, the elder, gave to his son Bernard and his heirs, who held it for three months before his father’s death, and still holds it of the king in chief by reason of the forfeiture of Robert de Bruys the betrayer of England (proditor Angl’), of the honour of Huntingdon. And afterwards the said services of the manor were assigned in dower to Eleanor the wife of Robert de Bruys the elder.
He died the morrow of St. Edmund the King, 29 Edward 1. Bernard his son, then aged 26, is his next heir.

173. RALPH DAMYOT, an idiot.
Writ to enquire concerning the lands &c. of the said Ralph, who died in the king’s wardship, 26 October, 12 Edward II.
[NOTTINGHAM.] Inq. taken at Retteford on Tuesday before St. Clement, 12 Edward II.
Walkeringham. A messuage and 3a. meadow, held of the abbot of Roche by service of 10s. 10d. yearly; and 2 bovates of land and 14a. meadow, held of the prior of Newstead (Novo Loco) by service of 15s. 2d. yearly.
Mistreton. [A messuage] and 1/2 bovate of land, held of the manor of Gringgeley, now in the king’s hand, by service of 8s. yearly; and 1/2 bovate of land, held of Walter de Osgotteby by service of 8s. yearly.
Everton. A messuage and 1 1/2 bovate of land, held of Sir William, archbishop of York, by service of 18d. yearly.
All taken into the king’s hand by reason of the said Ralph’s idiocy (fatuitatis).
John son of Adam Damyot is his kinsman and next heir of the messuage and 1/2 bovate of land in Mistreton held of the manor of Gringgeley, and of the messuage and 3a. meadow in Walkeringham, but all the rest are partible between the said John son of Adam, aged 21, and Agnes aged 8, and Maud aged 4, daughters of John Damyot, kinsman and next heir of the said Ralph.
Writ of certiorari on the petition of Robert, son and heir of John de Wellum, showing that his father forty years before the death of the said Ralph acquired from him the 1/2 bovate of land in Mistreton, now in the king’s hand, and his father and he peacefully continued in seisin thereof until the said Ralph’s death, 4 February, 12 Edward II.
[NOTTINGHAM.] Inq. Wednesday the feast of St. Mark, 12 Edward II.
The said John and Robert were seized of the tenements in the writ contained for forty years and more, and the king at no time of the life of the said Ralph was seized thereof by reason of his idiocy nor in any other manner, nor was the said Ralph an idiot in his whole life.
Writ of plenius certiorari on the petition of William son and heir of William de la Grave showing that the said Ralph forty years before his death alienated a messuage and 1 1/2 bovate of land in Everton, and that the said William the father had it in fee by the grant of John Romayn, late archbishop of York, after whose death the said William the son was seised thereof for seventeen years and more, until the death of the said Ralph, and that at no time was it taken into the king’s hand during the life of the said Ralph by reason of his idiocy, 4 February, 12 Edward II.

Wraton. The hamlet and 2 bovates of land in Wenington, freely held by Thomas de Wratton rendering 48s. 8d. yearly, and doing suit (at the court) of Hornby.

Writ of certiorari on the complaint of William de Nevill that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Farnley, which the said Margaret held for life only, with remainder to the said William, 1 March, 12 Edward II.
[YORK.] Inq. taken at Brameley, 16 March, 12 Edward II.
Farnley. The manor was held by the said Margaret for life only, and after her death remained wholly to William de Nevill and the heirs of his body, as a fine levied in the king’s court more fully testifies, and it is held of Sir Thomas earl of Lancaster, as of the honour of Pontefract, by knight’s service, doing suit at the court of Pontefract.
Writ of certiorari on the complaint of Geoffrey de Nevill and Robert and Edmund his brothers that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Hoton Lungevilyrs which the said Margaret held for life only, with remainder to the said Geoffrey, Robert and Edmund for their lives, 1 March, 12 Edward II.
[YORK.] Inq. Thursday after St. Gregory the Pope, 12 Edward II.
Hoton Lungvylers. The manor was held by the said Margaret for life only, by fine levied in the court of King Edward I, transcript whereof is underwritten, of Sir John Moubray by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
Transcript of a fine made between the said Margaret and John de Lovetot, on the octave of St. Hilary, 17 Edward I, whereby the said John granted the said manor to the said Margaret for life, with remainders to Geoffrey, Robert and Edmund her sons for life, and afterwards to the right heirs of the same Robert.

Hich parish. A water-mill held of Robert de Kendale by service of 6d. yearly.
Little Wilmundele. A messuage not built and 100a. land of the barony of Benigton, held of John de Brokesbourn by service of 2s. yearly, and 1/8 knight’s fee when scutage runs; and a messuage and 80a. land, held of Richard Punchardoun by service of 2s. 2 1/4d. yearly, and 1/4 knight’s fee when scutage runs.
And from the manor of Little Wilmundele there are paid to the poor from the priory of Wilmundele 20s. yearly in frank almoin.

NORFOLK. Inq. 17 November, 12 Edward II.
Ketringham. The manor (extent given), including woods called Thurgotisshagh, Stepislound and Heglelound, held of the earl of Oxford by service of a knight’s fee; and 5a. arable held of the prior of Penteneye by service of 6d. yearly.
Melton. 61s. yearly rent, held of Aymer (Adamaro) de Valencia, earl of Penproch, by service of 1/16 knights’fee; and a windmill, 17l. 2s. 8d. rent, and pleas &c. of court, held of the abbot of St. Benet, Hulme, by service of 10s. yearly.
Extent or summary of the above manors &c.
Letter [from the escheator]. He sends all the inquisitions, excepting those for Ixnynge and Newmarket in Suffolk [and Cambridge], and Fordham in Essex, which on account of certain difficulties remain yet to be taken.
Writ of certiorari commanding the escheator, having viewed certain charters in the custody of the prior of Wilmundele and Giles Dargentem, to enquire concerning the manors of Ixnynge, Newmarket and Fordham, 2 January, 12 Edward II.
Return [from the escheator] that he went to the manors in this writ contained, and inspected two charters exhibited by the prior of Wilmondele and Giles Dargentem containing that Reginald Dargentem gave to his son John and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies, all his lands &c. in Ixnynge and Newmarket, excepting a service of 30 horse-shoes, and all his lands &c. in Fordham, excepting the service of a certain tenant, doing the services due to the chief lords. Having read these before men of the neighbourhood, they said that they were ignorant of those charters and that the said John and Joan entered by the enfeoffment of the said Reginald but by other charters, and that the manor of Ixnynge is not held of the king but of anther lord; but the said prior and Giles asserted that they had found no other charters. Whereupon, as it is contained in the book of fees in the king’s exchequer amongst knights who hold of the king in chief, that Richard Dargentem holds 40s. land in Ixnynge, it appears to him that the manor is held of the king in chief, and as the heir is yet of tender age and incapable of prosecuting his right, he has refrained from acting upon that inquisition and holds the said manors in the king’s hand.
Writ [of certiorari] to the escheator, reciting the above writ and return &c., and commanding him again to enquire concerning the lands in Ixnyng, Fordham and Newmarket, 20 May, 12 Edward II. Endorsed with return from the escheator, that he sends an inquisition concerning the lands in Fordham, but has made none concerning Ixnyng and Newmarket on account of other business.
ESSEX. Inq. 23 September, 13 Edward II.
Fordham. The manor (extent given), was granted by Reginald de Argentem to John his son and Joan his wife, to hold to them and to the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the said Reginald and his heirs and assigns, by a charter dated the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 30 Edward I, ending (transcript given). The said manor is held of the prior of Colne and divers others (specified) by knight’s service and 49s. 1d. yearly.
The said John begat of the said Joan three daughters, viz.—Joan aged 9, Elizabeth aged 7, and Denise aged 4, who are heirs of the said Joan, and after her death the said John espoused one Agnes, of whom he begat John his son, aged a year and more, who is his next heir.

Copenore. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the earl of Lincoln by service of . . knight’s fee.
Stanbrigge. A messuage and a carucate of land, whereof 6a. arable and 2a… . are held of Thomas Daumvers by service of 2d. yearly, 8a. arable are held of the prior of St. Swithun’s, Winchester, by service of 8d. yearly, and the residue is held of Sir John de Sancto Johanne by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
North Hoghton. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the said Sir John by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, and doing suit at the hundred of Somborn.
Wanstede. A messuage and a virgate of land held of the prior of St. Mary’s, Suthewyk, by service of 5s. yearly.
La Bere. A messuage, a carucate of land, and 40a. land of new pourpresture, held of the Earl of Arundel, service unknown. Peter de la Bere, who formerly held the same, charged the said 40a. with 7s. 4d. yearly to be paid at the castle of Winchester, because when that pourpresture was made it was charged against him that it was to the injury of the king’s forest of La Bere; but the jury say that the said 40a. are without the bounds of the forest, and were then of the soil of the said Peter.
Alice Loveratz his sister, aged 50 and more, is his next heir.

The manor (extent given), including 6 1/2a. salt meadow by the Thames, and works called ‘sheafwork’ and ‘herdwork,’ held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee; and a messuage, 18a. land, 3a. wood, 1r. meadow and a windmill, which before were held of the said manor in gavelkind, acquired by Roger his father and himself.
Roger, son of John de Northwode, the younger, lately deceased, eldest son of the said John, the elder, now deceased, aged 12 at the feast of Easter last, is his next heir of this manor; and Master Thomas de Northwode, Master Richard his brother, and Simon de Northwode, knight, and Humphrey, his other brothers, all of full age, together with the said Roger, and John, William, Thomas and Robert his brothers, all of tender age, are co-heirs of the said John the elder of the said tenements in gavelkind.

The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief as of his manor of Middeltone for 1/40 knight’s fee and rendering 43s. 8 1/4d. yearly; certain other lands held in gavelkind of the king by service of 36s. 3 1/2d. rent at the said manor, two attendances at Laghdaies yearly, and a wey of cheese yearly; and other lands held of Robert (?) de Schirlande by service of 8s. yearly, 4 hens, 1 lamb(?), and suit at his court of Schirlande.
Thornham and Bengebiry. The manors (extents given), held of Geoffrey de Say by service of 2 knights’ fees and suit at his court of Grenewic’; and there are lands held in gavelkind of the purchase of the said John and his father, a water-mill in Maggelworth, meadow at Frenyngham, wood in Sabyncroft, and land in Cokeydane of the fee of the archbishop of Canterbury. And there are payable for the guard of the castle of Dover 16s. 4d. yearly.
