362.	ISABEL DE HULLES alias DE HILLES.
	Writ of plenius certiorari on the petition of John de Watevill and Denise his wife, and John de Langele and Alice his wife, showing that certain lands &c. in Palington, co. Warwick, of the inheritance of the said Denise and Alice, by reason of their minority, after the death of the said Isabel their mother who held the same of Thomas, sometime earl of Lancaster, by knight’s service, came into the wardship of the said earl, and though they were of full age long before the said earl’s forfeiture, were taken into the king’s hand, 20 May, 15 Edward II.

	Palyngton. Certain lands &c. held by the said Isabel of the said earl by service of 1/4 knight’s fee, came to the hands of the said earl as wardship, and he held them on the day of his forfeiture as abovesaid. The said Denise, aged 23 and more, and the said Alice, aged 20 and more, are next heirs of said Isabel.
	Writ of certiorari to enquire whether the said Isabel held the tenements abovesaid as of the honour of Leicester or otherwise, 20 May, 17 Edward II.

	Cuttecombe in Lekforde. The said Roger was a villein of the abbot of Hide by Winchester, and held of him a messuage and 8a. arable, in villenage in Cuttecombe within the abbot’s manor of Lekforde, by villein service rendering 12d. yearly, ploughing 1/2a. land for winter seed, and reaping for one day in the autumn with one man. He held no lands &c. of the king in chief.

	Sedbery in Lounesdale. Two parts of divers lands &c. (extent given), held in chief of the liberty of St. Peter, York, by service of 40d., and a moiety of the advowsons of the churches of Sedberi and Dent; all which are in the king’s hand by reason of the forfeiture of Andrew de Harclay; and divers lands, &c. which are in the king’s hand as well by the death of John de Harclay, as by occasion of the forfeiture of the said Andrew.
	Writ of certiorari super vero valore, on the petition of Ermeiarde, late the wife of the said John, showing that sometime before his death, he gave certain lands, &c. in the following places to Andrew his brother, through whose forfeiture they are in the king’s hands, and praying for her dower, 9 June, 16 Edward II.
[YORK.]	Inq. taken at Bedale on Tuesday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 17 Edward II.
	Eskylby. 35a. land, 4 cottages, and a plot. Holme. A capital messuage with a close of 8a. meadow, 15 bovates of land, 1a. meadow, 2 cottages, 4s. rent, and a windmill. The said John was in seisin of the above after he espoused the said Ermeiarde and could have dowered her thereof, and the jury know of no reason why she should not have her dower thereof.
[YORK.]	Inq. Tuesday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 17 Edward II.
	Seddebergh [alias Sadbergh] in Lonesdale. Fourteen tenants at will holding 14 messuages and divers lands, and rendering 57s. 2d. yearly, 2 wasted tenements, a free tenant rendering 1/4d. yearly, and a fourth part of a water-mill. The said John was in seisin of the above &c. and the jury know no reason why the said Ermeiarde should not have her reasonable dower thereof.

CUMBERLAND.	Inq. Sunday after SS. Peter and Paul, 16 Edward II.
	Le Hegheved in the forest of Inglewode. The peel with 66a. land of new assart, held, after he married Ermeiarde, late his wife, of the king in chief, by service of 66s. yearly at the exchequer of Carlisle; and the said John before his death enfeoffed Andrew his brother thereof, by whose forfeiture they are in the king’s hand; but the said Andrew before his death dowered the said Ermeiarde of a third part thereof, whereof she is still tenant.
[NORTHUMBERLAND.]	Thyrlwal. A water-mill held of the king in chief as of the manor of Werk, as parcel of the barony of Thyrlwal, and doing suit at the court of Werk.
[CUMBERLAND.]	Wyttehal. The manor held jointly by the said John and Ermeiarde, by the enfeoffment of Robert de Mulcastre, of the manor of Bolton by service of a pair of gilt spurs, and rendering 26s. 2d. yearly at the exchequer of Carlisle. Ucmanby. Certain tenements held jointly as above, of Anthony de Lucy by cornage rendering 4s., 2s. 6d. for food for servants, and 4s. at the exchequer of Carlisle for new encroachments.
	Extent or summary of lands, divided into two parts and a third part, viz.—
CUMBERLAND.	Thornheved, Ulvesby, Penereth, Gaytschales, Neuland, Thornnythwayt in Gilesland, and Thirlwall.
WESTMORELAND.	Slegill, Kyrbythore, Crakanthorp, Helton Bacon, and Kurkebergh.
YORK.	Eskylby and Holm. Petition to the king and council of the said Ermeiarde for the said manor of Whithalle and lands &c. in Ukmanby, in which she was enfeoffed jointly with the said John, as lately found by inquisition. Endorsed, because in the inquisition there is no mention who is the said John’s heir &c. let there be a new inquisition.
CUMBERLAND.	Inq. Tuesday in Easter week, 17 Edward II.
	Whithalle. The manor and a certain tenement in Ucmanby, were sometime held by Robert de Mulcastre, who enfeoffed thereof the said John and Ermeiarde jointly for life, with remainder to Henry their son and his heirs male, and reversion to the right heirs of the said John. And immediately after the said John’s death Andrew de Harcla, the king’s enemy and rebel, entered upon the said manor and tenement by pretext of a feoffment made to him by the said John, and held them until he was taken at Carlisle; by whose forfeiture they were taken into the king’s hand and so remain. Andrew his son, aged 3, is next heir of the said John.
	Assignment of dower to Ermeiarde, late the wife of the said John (undated), viz.—
CUMBERLAND.	Penereth. Five messuages and a third part of a messuage, 20a. land, and 3 1/3a. meadow. Gaitscales. Certain lands &c. worth 39s. Ullysby. 7s. 1 1/2d. rent.
WESTMORELAND.	Kirkebythore. Certain lands &c. worth 7s. 8d. Helton Bacon. A third part of a water-mill. Slegil. Three messuages and a half and a third part of half a messuage, and 7 bovates of land; 9 1/3a. land; and 1/2a. meadow and a third part of 1/2a. meadow.
YORK.	Holme. A third part of a capital messuage, 2 1/2a. meadow and a third part of 1/2a. meadow; 5 bovates of land; 2 cottages; a moiety of a windmill; and 4s. rent. Petition to the king and council of the said Ermeiarde for her dower of a third part of an assart called ‘le Heghheved,’ of which she was peacefully seised until the warden of the peel of Heghheved by colour of his office, ejected her. A capital messuage, 4 bovates of land in demesne, 2 bovates of land held by tenants at will, 12s. rent, a water-mill, assarts containing 12a. and 4a. land, and a wood within the forest of Pikering, held of the inheritance of Petronilla his wife of the king in chief as of the honour of Pikering by serjeanty of being the king’s forester in the Forest of Pikering; and one bovate held jointly with the said Petronilla, who survives, of the king, as parcel of the above. Alice his daughter, aged 11, is his heir.

	Haddeleygh. A messuage, 70a. land and 15a. wood, held in chief of Humphrey de Booun, sometime earl of Hereford, as of his manor of Plessis by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, with other lands &c. held by divers tenants of the said William as parcel of the aforesaid tenements; which tenements are now held of the king in chief, by the forfeiture of the said earl. He died about Easter day in the year abovesaid. John his first-born son, aged 30 and more, is his next heir.

The manor held of John de Warrenna, earl of Surrey, by service of 10s. 6d. yearly; and 7a. land held of Thomas Rocolm, whose lands are in the king’s hand by his forfeiture, by service of 2s. 1d. Northreppes. The manor, held of the aforesaid earl by service of 6s. 8d. in socage. Depham. The manor, held by the said Laurence and Joan his wife, as of her inheritance of the prior of Holy Trinity, Canterbury, by service of 13s. 4d. yearly in socage. His daughters, Sibyl, aged 28 and more, who was married to Robert de Reppes in the lifetime of the said Laurence, and Elizabeth, aged 24 and more, who was similarly married to John de Wilby, are his next heirs.

The manor (extent given), held jointly by the said Nicholas and Amice his wife to them and their heirs, by the grant of Joan late the wife of John Dengayne, mother of the said Nicholas, of John de Haudloo by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. John, son of the said Nicholas and Amice, aged 21 and more, is next heir.

	Persted. The manor (extent given) acquired of Sir John son of Vitalis Engayne and Joan his wife, to the said Nicholas and the heirs of his body, by charter dated 2 nones of April, viz.—the day of St. Ambrose, 22 Edward I, and held of John son and heir of Emery Peche, who is of full age, by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. 	Colne Engayne. The manor (extent given), jointly acquired by the said Nicholas and Amice, who survives, of Thomas de Arderne and Henry de Stradebrok, by fine levied in the king’s court in the term of St. Martin, 12 Edward II., to hold for their lives, with successive remainders to John Engayne and Helen his wife for their lives, to John son of the said Nicholas and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of the said John Engayne, and held of John de Claveryng by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. 	Bustard Thorp. Two parts of the manor (extent given), held jointly by the said John with Maud his wife, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies with remainder to the right heirs of the said John, of the heirs of David le Lardiner by service of 7s. yearly. Margaret, mother of the said John is dowered of a third part of the manor. Middlethorp. Two parts of a messuage, and of 4 bovates of land each containing 7a. (extent given), held jointly in form abovesaid of the abbess of Whiteby by service of 20s. yearly. Bisschopthorp. Two parts of 14 tofts and of 15 bovates of land, held jointly in form abovesaid, of the king in chief by service of 53s. 4d. of blanch farm yearly, by the hands of the sheriff. The aforesaid Margaret holds a third part of the tenements aforesaid in dower. Le Drynghous. A house which lepers inhabit, founded of the alms the said John’s ancestors, held jointly in form abovesaid, of the heirs of the aforesaid David le Lardiner as part of the said two parts of the manor of Bustard Thorp.

There are two manors there, whereof Haskolf (Haskolwus) and Maud his wife hold one of Sir Richard de Grey of Codenor, and the other was held by the said Ralph of John Lestrange, kinsman and heir of Ebulo de Montibus, then a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of 1/4 fee. Thomas his son is his next heir, and on the day of the said Ralph’s death was 16 years of age, and is now 23, and married to Alice daughter of Roger de Sulgrave of Elpston. Joan his mother, late the wife of the said Ralph, undertook his wardship and sold his marriage to Sir Roger de Nortborow, bishop of Coventry and Lychfield, and he was married by the bishop. The said manor remained in the hands of the said Joan until the quinzaine of Easter, 15 Edward II, when a fine was levied between Henry de Luceby chaplain and the said Thomas de Grengham and Alice, who now hold by the said fine. Memorandum that Thomas son of Ralph de Grenham made fine with the king by 200 marks for pardon for entering without the king’s licence, his age unproved, upon a manor in Ketene which his father held of the heir of John Lestrange, a minor and in the king’s wardship, and for marrying without the king’s licence. Endorsed. Amongst the great fines of 19 Edward I. Petition to the king and council, by the said Thomas, praying to be discharged of what is still due of a fine of 200 marks which he had been compelled to make for his wardship and marriage, which was supposed to be due to the king as guardian of Sir John Lestrange of Knokyn; for neither the said John nor his ancestors were seised of their homage. Let men be assigned to enquire whether the said John or his ancestors were ever seised of the services of the said Ralph or his ancestors, and if not let the said Thomas be discharged of what is in arrear of the fine. Petition to the King by Thomas de Grenham, showing that after the death of Ralph his father, who held the manor of Ketene, worth 9l. 15s. 1 1/2d. yearly, for 1/4 knight’s fee of Sir John Lestrange, heir of Ebulo (Eble) de Montz, a minor and in the king’s wardship, he being then nearly 18, entered the said tenements as heir of the said Ralph, and peacefully held them until he was of age, and married at his will; and then by the malice of Sir Wiliiam de Clyf, and the suit of Hascolf de Wytewell, who informed Sir Hugh le Despenser and Master Robert de Baldok, then chancellor, that the king ought to have the wardship and marriage, he was ejected from his house and lands, with his mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters, until he had made a fine of 200 marks. Prays the king to accept a reasonable fine according to the extent of his trespass. (French, undated.) 	Ketene. A toft, 54a. arable, 2 1/2a. meadow, 20s. rent, &c. were held by the said Ralph of John le Straunge by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. The said Ralph died on 12 August, 10 Edward II. Thomas his son and heir was then 18 years old except 2 months. and on that day entered upon the said lands &c. He married Alice, daughter of Roger de Sulgrave of Helpeston, on Friday before St. Andrew, 15 Edward II, and was then 22 years and 11 months of age.
