	Writ of certiorari to the king’s bailiff of the Isle of Wight as to why the lands &c. which were of John de Hardington in Whitefeld have been taken into the king’s hand, 8 Dec. 22 Edw. I.
	Writ to John son of Thomas keeper of the New Forest to certify the value of the manor of Whytefeud, no return having been made to a former writ, 19 May, 22 Edw. I.
SOUTHAMPTON; ISLE OF WIGHT.	Extent, — 22 Edw. I.
	Witefeld. The manor (extent given). The said John held the manor in fee and made a composition by which he demised the manor to the king, retaining it only for life. He died on the feast of the Assumption, 21 Edw. I, whereby the king has seisin and the manor is in the escheator’s custody.

197.	JOHN DE MONTE ALTO.
	Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Helen, late the wife of John de Monte Alto, that lands &c. in Great Lillingston, whereof she was enfeoffed jointly with the said John, had been taken into the king’s hand on his death, 4 June, 22 Edw. I.
OXFORD.	Inq. taken at Cerceden on Saturday before St. John the Baptist, 22 Edw. I.
	Lillingston. A messuage and a carucate of land whereof the said John de Monte Alto and Helen his wife were jointly enfeoffed for 11 years before the death of the said John, held of the king in chief by service of 6d. yearly at the exchequer; and 8s. [rent] similarly held of John de Olneie [rendering?] 5d. and 2 hens; the reversion whereof pertains to the heirs of the said John; and a messuage and 12 1/2a. land, similarly held of Richard Grosset and others, by the said John and Helen to them their heirs or assigns.

198.	THOMAS SON OF LAMBERT DE MULETON.
	Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Margaret late the wife of the said Thomas that 10 marks of land in Dreg and Braydestanes, whereof she was enfeoffed jointly with her husband, had been taken into the king’s hand on his death, 29 April, 22 Edw. I.
CUMBERLAND.	Inq. made at Egremund on Thursday before St. Barnabas, 22 Edw. I.
	The said Thomas and Margaret held in Dreg and Braythestanes, of the free marriage of the said Margaret, of the gift of Alan de Peniton, 7 marks 12s. 11d. of land only; and the remainder of the 10 marks of land they held in the same manner in Mulcastre and Ranglasse.

199.	NICHOLAS DE CERNES of Temesford.
	Writ of plenius certiorari on the representation of E. bishop of Lincoln that lands in Temesford lately held of him by Nicholas de Cernes, who died in Bedford prison accused of the death of Henry de Legh but not convicted, had been taken into the king’s hand after his death together with the marriage of his heir, as though he had been convicted of the said felony, 20 Jan. 22 Edw. I.
BEDFORD.	Inq. made at Bedford on Thursday after the Annunciation, 22 Edw. I.
	Temeseford. A messuage and half a knight’s fee (extent given), and a free fishery, held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service, homage, foreign service, and suit at his court of Bikeleswade every three weeks; and the wardship of these lands &c. and the marriage of the heir pertain to the bishop; a knight’s fee (extent given) held of Sir Ralph de Bello Campo by foreign service; 2a. land held of Henry de la Leye in chief by service of 1d. yearly; 6 1/2a. land held of John Robert of Everton in chief by service of 4d. yearly; la. 1r. land held of John Cambon by service of 1d. yearly; 1a. land held of Hugh Turold by service of 1/2d.; 9 1/2a. land held of the heirs of Robert le Karon by foreign service; and 3r. meadow held of the same heirs. The said Nicholas died in Bedford prison before he was convicted of the said felony, but Robert Malet and Hugh de Brandeston, justices for delivering the said gaol, found by inquisition made in virtue of their office, that the said Nicholas was guilty of the death of Henry de la Leye, but he did not put himself because he was ordained, as he said. His lands were taken into the king’s hands on account of the death of the said Henry. Endorsed: Let it be written to the sheriff not to intermeddle further, and afterwards let the bishop and the heir do what seems to them expedient.
	Writ to Robert Malet to send the record and process of the aforesaid inquisition, 6 April, 22 Edw. I.
	Answer of Robert Malet. When Gilbert de Briddeshale, William de Bereford and the writer, by the king’s special mandate, took an inquisition at Bedeford as to the death of Henry de la Leye, Nicholas de Cernes was indicted of the death, wherefore the sheriff was ordered to take him. And the sheriff, coroners and jury testified that, immediately after committing the said felony, the said Nicholas withdrew himself and fled, wherefore the aforesaid justices ordered the sheriff to take his lands, tenements and chattels into the king’s hand. Afterwards the said Nicholas came before Robert Malet and Hugh de Brandeston, assigned for the delivery of Bedford gaol, on Friday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 21 Edw. I, and would not put himself on the inquisition of the country for the said death, and therefore was remitted to prison to have the penalty of the statute. His chattels were confiscated on account of his flight and his lands and tenements were taken into the king’s hand by the said Gilbert &c. as aforesaid.

202.	EDMUND SON AND HEIR OF NICHOLAS BARON OF STAFFORD.
	Writ at the request of the said Edmund, who is in the wardship of Henry de Sancto Lamberto and Benevenue late the wife of John Ertaud, 30 July, 22 Edw. I.
STAFFORD.	Proof of age, made at Stafford on Thursday after St. Laurence, 22 Edw. I.
	Nicholas, prior of St. Thomas’s by Stafford, says that the said Edmund was born at Madeleye on St. Edith’s day, 15 July, 1 Edw. I, and this he knows because, when news of the birth was heard in Stafford, many rejoiced; and within two months of his birth he saw the said Edmund, who was baptized in the church of Madeleg. Walter de Elmedon, chaplain, and rector of the church of Weston, agrees and knows it because Sir Richard de Stretton, knight, married Rose, sister of Nicholas sometime baron of Stafford and aunt of the said Edmund, who, about the feast of St. Edith before the birth of the said Edmund, bore a daughter Joan, who was 22 years old at the feast of St. Edith last; moreover, the said Edmund was born on the feast of St. Edith next after the eyre of Sir Ralph de Hyngham and his fellows in co. Stafford in the summer before the death of King Henry III. Roger de Pywelesdon, knight, agrees, for he remembers that the said Edmund was born on the feast of St. Edith after the eyre of the said Ralph in co. Salop, which was at Michaelmas before the death of King Henry III; he likewise says that Nicholas the father sent him a letter to come to Madeleg to lift the said Edmund from the font and that hastening to come he found the boy baptized. Henry de Cressewall, knight, agrees. Hugh de Weston, knight, agrees, and adds that soon after the birth the said Nicholas came to his house at Weston and told him that he had a son. William Trumwyn, knight, agrees with Hugh de Weston. Robert de Pype, knight, agrees. William de Staff(ord), knight, agrees, for he remembers that the said Edmund was born on the feast of St. Edith after the death of King Henry III, adding that he himself was at Madeleg on the morrow of the birth of the said Edmund and saw him before he was baptized. William de Wrottesle agrees, adding that servants of the baron of Stafford on their way from Madeleye to Wotton on the morrow of the birth of the said Edmund came to the house of Hugh de Wrottesle his father and brought news of the birth. Robert le Marschall agrees, and knows it because Gilbert le Marschall his father died sixteen years ago at the feast of the Purification last, and then it was commonly said that the said Edmund was 4 years old at the feast of St. Edith before; and he himself was of the household of Nicholas the father. Hugh de Chaulden agrees with William de Staff(ord), and says that he was present at Madeleye when the said Edmund was baptized. Robert Gerveyse agrees with Hugh de Weston, because at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist before the birth of the said Edmund he demised a meadow in Pobbemor for 21 years to William de Aspeleye and the term expired at the said feast last. Memorandum by the escheator that he warned Henry de Sancto Lamberto at Maddeleye, to be present, whose bailiff came to the inquiry and had nothing to say why the king should not restore the lands &c. to the said Henry if of full age, and the said Benevenue was warned at Wotton and came not nor sent anyone.

	Rampton. …. and three parts of a bovate of land or 24a. held of the honour of Tykyl, doing suit every three weeks at the court of Tykyl, and he holds (by?) knight’s service and does waytemete and causeway (facturam calcete) and gives scutage when it shall come; and he had 9 bondmen holding 4 1/2 bovates, each rendering 20s. yearly, and 33s. 6d. assised rents from free tenants yearly and 2lb. pepper, 2lb. cummin and 1lb. wax. Stephen son of Robert Maulovel, aged 16 1/2, is his next heir. Endorsed: The rolls and memoranda of the exchequer being searched, it is not found that the said Stephen held anything of the king save of the honour of Tychull.

	Solthorne. The manor held by Thomas de Leukenore and Lucy his wife for one knight’s fee by service of 1lb. cummin when scutage runs, and by homage. He had no advowsons of churches in the county.

[YORK.]	Inq. made at Pontefract on Saturday after the Annunciation, 23 Edw. I.
	Athelingflet. A toft and 20a. land with the advowson of the church, held of John Deyvile, who held the same of Sir Roger de Moubray. Over a great part of the tithes of the said [church] there is a dispute between the abbot of Selby and the patron of the church.
	Assignment of dower to Joan late the wife of John de Luvetot, the elder, of the lands &c. of the said John in the bailiwick of Malcolm de Harley, escheator this side Trent, except 26s. 8d. rent for lands which Peter Burre holds in Stanbregge, whereof she, at her own request, is not dowered; saving to her her dower of lands &c. not contained in the extents returned into the chancery, 8 Feb, 23 Edw. I.
	John, son and heir of the said John, though warned, came not.

The manor (extent given), including a capital messuage called Cockedyk, 3 salt works, pasture called ‘le Mersch,’ a fishery, works of villeins called ‘workmen,’ and ‘molemen,’ and a custom called ‘wodefoyer,’ held of the king in chief as of the honour of Albemarle by service of 1/12 knight’s fee. Holebech. 55s. 1d. yearly rent, from tenants called ‘sokemen’ who also do works in the autumn, and a rent of 20s. yearly from the court of Sir Robert de Hakebech held next after the feast of St. Michael; and a messuage and 1/2a. land, held of the heirs of William Oldelyn by service of a clove gillyflower. 	Rokesham. The manor (extent given) held of the barony of Bayeux, now in the king’s hand, as member of the manor of Goushill, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee. Cranewell. 6 bovates of land held of the prior and convent of Sempingham by service of 2s. yearly, and doing the foreign service pertaining to such a tenement. Walecote by Bilingeye. 6 bovates of land let ad altam firmam rendering 64s. yearly; which Peter de Goushill, his father, held of Roger de Mortuo Mari, but of whom or by what service the said Ralph held them is unknown to the jury. LINCOLN.	Inq. Tuesday before St. Martin, 22 Edw. I.
	Lincoln city. A messuage held of the heirs of Peter de Hulmo by service of 1d.; and another messuage held of divers lords by service of 9s. which is worth only 18d. yearly because in the time of Peter de Goushill, father of the said Ralph, it was pulled down. Heir as above.

212.	LEWIS DE LA POLE.
	Writ to the escheator to deliver to Joan, late the wife of Owen de la Pole, the wardship of two parts of the lands &c. which were of the said Lewis in Powys, which are in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the heir of the same Lewis, and which the king has granted to her until the lawful age of the heir, rendering the true value at the exchequer, 14 Aug. 23 Edw. I.
	Writ to the escheator, whereas it has been testified to the king that the manor of Gorgennou and the land of Meghughecoyt, whereof the said Lewis dowered Sibyl his wife at the church door when he married her as is said, exceed the value of her dower of all his lands &c., he is commanded to take all the said lands &c. into the king’s hand, and cause to be assigned to the said Sibyl her reasonable dower, according to law &c., 18 Aug. 23 Edw. I.
	Memorandum. By reason of these two mandates the escheator caused all the said lands &c. to be extended at 53l. 7s. 1d., whereof Lady Hawis late the wife of Griffin de la Pole receives in dower 8 marks yearly, and on 26 September at Acton Burnel he delivered the wardship of two parts thereof to the aforesaid Joan, together with the remaining third part until the aforesaid Sibyl shall sue.

	The escheator to Sir Thomas de Titeleye, sheriff of Salop, and Sir John de Esthope, whereas of the lands &c. which were of the said Lewis in Mohhenant and Mehhein he has assigned to Sibyl late his wife the under-written lands &c. in dower, viz.—that chamber which is on the eastern side of the hall of Gardgenou, with kitchen and bakehouse, a third part of the grange, garden, lands &c. of the manor of Gardgenou, with free fishery in the fishpond and running waters, and free chace in the common chaces in Mehhein and Mohhenant, with a third part of ‘le Frith’ in Mehhein and in Mohhenant, and a third part of the issues of the mill and of the rents, customs and services &c., they are commanded to deliver the same to the said Sibyl with free entrance and egress, assigning to her certain tenants by name, whose rents and services clearly enrolled are to be sent to him. And on 20 Oct. Lady Joan, late the wife of Owen de la Pole, guardian of the lands &c. was commanded to cause all the tenants in Mehhein and Mohhenant to be present to hear what the said Thomas and John shall enjoin them on behalf of the king, and to deliver to the said Sibyl all the issues of the said lands &c. from 16 Oct. abovesaid.

YORK.	Proof of age, taken at Scelton in Clyveland, on the morrow of the Epiphany, 23 Edw. I.
	The jury say that the said Lucy was born at Kilton in Clyveland on Friday before Palm Sunday, 7 Edw. I., and on Palm Sunday in the same year was baptized in the chapel of St. Peter in the same town by Alan, chaplain of Sir Marmaduke de Tueng [alias de Tweng] in the presence of Sir Richard de Tueng, Peter Marescall, Richard le Estywur [alias le Estivor], lady Lucy the wife of Marmaduke de Tueng and Margery de Brus. William le Latimer who held lands &c. of the said Lucy’s inheritance, being called did not come, but Robert Bussel his bailiff came and said nothing why the same should not be restored to her. William de Layburn and Walter de Rokeslee did not come because they hold nothing of the inheritance of the said Lucy in the county.
	Writ (ad melius inquirendum), the previous inquisition being insufficient because it makes no mention of the age of the said Lucy nor whether William de Layburn and Walter de Rokeslee, who held lands &c. of the inheritance by the king’s commission, were warned to be present, 22 Jan. 23 Edw. I.
[YORK.]	Proof of age, taken at Kyrkbrun on Thursday after St. Gregory, 23 Edw. I.
	The jury say that the said Lucy was born at Kylton on Friday before Palm Sunday, 7 Edw. I, was baptized the Sunday following (as above), was 15 years of age on Friday before Palm Sunday, 22 Edw. I, and will be 16 on Friday before Palm Sunday, 23 Edw. I. William de Layburn, being warned, came not; Walter de Rokesley was warned and Walter de Throkyng his attorney came and said that although William de Layburn, to whom the king had committed the wardship of the manor of Kyrkbrunn until the lawful age of the heir of Robert de Tweng, had committed the same to Walter de Rokesley, who for two years had peaceful seisin, yet on Monday before St. Martin, 21 Edw. I. the aforesaid Lucy, Thomas le Latimer and others unknown, ejected him and took the issues of the manor until the quinzaine of the Purification following in contempt of the king and to the said William’s damage of 60l.; on which day Walter was re-seised by the king’s writ, and remained in seisin until Thursday before St. Bartholomew, 22 Edw. I, when William son of William Latymer, Lucy his wife, Thomas Latymer and others unknown violently ejected him, and took all the issues &c. until the octave of St. Michael following, to his damage of 20l. &c., when the said Walter was re-seised by the king’s writ: on the morrow he was violently ejected by the said William and Lucy and others, who took all the issues until the feast of St. Martin following to his damage of 30l., when he was re-seised by the king’s writ by the escheator and by view of William de Midleton, the king’s bailiff, and others. He remained so seised until Friday before St. Nicholas, 23 Edw. I. when several persons unknown from the towns of Skamston and Kyrkbrunn, on behalf of the said William and Lucy, entered by force and broke the doors of the hall and grange, took his corn and goods and ejected him and beat and ill-treated Walter de Throkyng, his attorney. Wherefore he says, the lands &c., of the inheritance of the said Lucy ought not to be restored to her, until they have satisfied the king for the contempt, and the said Walter for his loss. The said William and Lucy are still in seisin of the manor.

214.	HENRY SON AND HEIR OF HENRY DE PERCY.
SUSSEX.	Proof of age of the said Henry, who says he is of full age and was born at Petteworthe, and seeks his lands &c. which are in the wardship of the executors of the testament of the late Queen Eleanor the king’s mother, and of the executors of the testament of John de Vescy; whereupon the king gave him a day to prove his age before the king, viz. from Easter in 15 days, and the sheriff was commanded to summon jurors and warn the said executors to be present, but did nothing, wherefore he is in mercy, and was again commanded to summon jurors on the morrow of the Ascension, and warn Anthony bishop of Durham and other the executors of John de Vescy to be present &c. And afterwards on the morrow of the Ascension, 22 [Edw. I], the sheriff of York was commanded to warn the bailiffs of the executors of the said Queen Eleanor to be present; who came not, but Richard de Brettevill said for the king that the lands ought not yet to be restored to the said heir because he had not yet satisfied for his marriage; and on the same day the sheriff of Sussex warned the said Anthony bishop of Durham &c., who came not; wherefore the examination of the said proof was proceeded with, saving the king’s right concerning the marriage.
	Hamo Bonet, knight, aged 60, says he only knows of the said Henry’s age by the report of the country, which testifies that Henry his father died in the time of King Henry, and the said Henry was born about the feast of the Annunciation after King Henry’s death. Henry de Lymis, knight, 60, says the said Henry was 21 at the feast of the Annunciation last, and this he knows because he has a son William, born at the feast of the Purification next following, who is 20 and more, and the said Henry was born at Pettworth. Hugh de Cumbe, 36, says the said Henry is 21, and knows it because the said Henry’s father died at the feast of St. John in the autumn before the death of King Henry who granted the wardship of John the said Henry’s brother. The same Henry was then in his mother’s womb, and was born at the feast of the Annunciation after the said king’s death at Pettworth, and baptized in the church there. Henry King’s son (filius Regis), aged 40, dwelling at Wotleworth, 2 leagues from Pettworth, agrees from the common report of the country. Robert de Wappehurst, aged 50, agrees, and knows it because he has a son John who was born about the death of King Henry, who is now 21 1/2 years (old). Henry de Boumyfeld (?), aged 60, of Petteworth, agrees, and knows it by the report of the country, and the said Henry Percy bears the name of one Henry Coly a free tenant of the same town. John Gundevill, aged 50, dwelling in the said parish, agrees, and knows it because in the third year after the said Henry’s birth he married a wife; also by the death of King Henry; and he was born and baptized in the same parish &c. John de Codeham, of the present king’s age, dwelling 2 leagues from Petworth, agrees, and knows it by the death of King Henry, and because he was in the service of Henry Tregoz, and bore a present from his lord to the mother of the said Henry, then lying in his cradle. John de Perham, who is of the present king’s age and dwells 3 leagues from Petworth, agrees, and says he (the heir) is 21 years and 11 weeks (old), and this he knows by the death of King Henry. Robert de Howych, aged 50, dwelling 10 leagues from Pettewrth, agrees, and knows it by the death of King Henry, and because he has a daughter Emma, who was born on the 3rd day after the birth of the said heir, and is now 21 and more. Robert de Clympefolde, aged 36, agrees, and knows it by the death of King Henry and the common report of the country. Henry Attefeld, aged 40, dwelling 8 leagues from Petteworth, agrees, and knows it well because he married his wife in the year the said Henry’s father died. John Hokhurst, aged 36, (dwelling) 6 leagues from Petteworth, agrees, and knows it by the common report of the country. William de Bergham Wyk, 40, (dwelling) 8 leagues from Petteworth, agrees for the same reason. John le Rus, aged 40, dwelling at Waring 8 leagues from Petteworth, says the like, for he had a son John who was born at Christmas after King Henry’s death, and is now 22 and more. John le Melsher (?), 60, agrees, and knows it because he married his wife 7 years before King Henry’s death. William Musard agrees, and knows it by King Henry’s death and the report of the country. Hugh de Bodington agrees, and knows it because he was in the wardship of the said Henry’s mother. William Trotemenn (?) agrees, and knows it from one Emma who was the said Henry’s nurse, dwelling in his town; and he was present at the purification of the said Henry’s mother.
