He held a 4th part of the manor of Hempstead in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief, service unknown, annual value 16s. Because he had no heir of his body and his heir is unknown the king has taken the issues since his death, and it remains in the king’s hands.

He died on 17 March 1408. John Crote, living in King’s Lynn, the son of Isabel Crote, his sister, is his kinsman and heir, aged 55 years and more.

Jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives him, he held the manors of Moggerhanger and ‘Perotes’ in Beeston, described as a rent of 113s.4d. in Caldecote and Beeston, to them and his heirs by the grant of John Ludwyk of Hertfordshire and William Wenlok of Luton in Bedfordshire, esquires, John Blounham, vicar of Luton, and John Chance of Barking, by a charter dated at Moggerhanger on 25 July 1407 and now shown to the jurors. They are held of William lord Ferrers of Groby as a 4th part of a knight’s fee; annual values, Moggerhanger £8 6s.8d., because William Flete has an annuity of 33s.4d. from it granted by Roger and Margaret, and the manor of Beeston called ‘Perotes’, 5 marks.

He held 2 parts of 6 a. meadow and of 71s.11d. rent in Swaythling and Wimpson by the courtesy of England after the death of Joan his wife, one daughter and heir of Nicholas Berenger. With the 3rd part, which Thomas Semeleye holds for life by the courtesy of England since the death of Anastasia his wife, the other daughter of Nicholas, they are held of the king in chief by a rent of 20s. payable at the exchequer by the sheriff, beyond that the 2 parts are worth 30s. yearly.

He held in his demesne as of fee in chief of Richard II, 2 tenements and 2 cottages in ‘Mesondewlane’ in the parish of St. Nicholas to the east, and 3 cottages next the churchyard of St. Nicholas to the west, rendering 14s.8d. to the king, annual value beyond that 10s.
He died on 30 Aug. 1397. Thomas Broun of Kingston upon Hull, son of Maud his sister, is his next heir aged 50 years and more. Maud his widow has held a 3rd part in dower since his death and still does so, and also the other 2 parts because in 1407–8 Thomas Broun promised before John Bermycham, then mayor of Calais, and various aldermen not to interfere with her possession of the premises during her lifetime.

There are 200 a. arable of which 100 a. may be sown each year, annual value 4d. each, the other 100 being pasture for sheep at 1d. each, 12 a. meadow at 4s. each yearly, 252 a. hill pasture for sheep 20s., rents of free and unfree tenants, £8 payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas. It is held of the king in chief as half a knight’s fee.

WARWICK. Inquisition. Warwick. 22 Feb. 1416.
He held the manor of Exhall in fee tail by a fine of 1340 [CP 25/1/287/40, no. 270] by which Hugh Bachelor, chaplain granted it to William le Botiller of Warrington and Elizabeth his wife, with successive remainders to Richard le Botiller and Joan his wife, and the heirs of their bodies; John brother of Richard and the heirs of his body and the right heirs of William. William and Elizabeth are dead. Richard and Joan died without heirs of their bodies. John entered and died holding it. He had issue the William named in the writ.
The manor is held of the king in chief of the manor of Cheylesmore by the rent of a rose, annual value £10.
William died without heirs of his body on 28 Sept. last. John his brother is next heir aged 23 years and more.

NOTTINGHAM. Inquisition. Nottingham. 25 April.
He had held the manor of Cropwell Butler in fee tail and granted it to John his brother for life with reversion to himself and his heirs. John regranted it to William for 100 years rendering £20 yearly by equal parts at Lady Day and Michaelmas, with licence to distrain if in arrears. Thus William held it of the the duchy of Lancaster, service unknown, annual value nil beyond the rent.

Owing to an inquisition taken ex officio at Bedford on 9 Nov. 1392 after the death of William White [CIPM XVII, no. 291] and to the minority of the heir, the premises were taken into the king’s hands, and so remained owing to another inquisition of 20 April 1401 [CIPM XVIII, no. 336].

On 25 June 1415 by charter shown to the jurors he gave the manors of Orchardleigh and Eggford to Thomas Bathe, William Chesterton, Robert Longe and John Norton of Frome to hold for the term of 9 years beginning on 29 June following in order to pay his debts and for prayers for his soul.

SHROPSHIRE AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inquisition. Shrewsbury 29 June.
He held the manor of Sandford in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by the serjeanty of finding a horseman for the king’s service for the safeguard of Montgomery castle for 40 days when war is made by the Welsh against the English, annual value 66s.8d., and no more because it is situated on the border of the county and was totally wasted and burnt by the rebels in the time of Henry IV.
He died on 4 May last. Richard his son and heir is aged 40 years and more.

Nicholas Rycote and Katharine his wife held the manor of Rycote to them and the heirs of their bodies. They had issue Joan who married Nicholas Englefeld and had 3 daughters, Sybil now aged 15, Cecily now aged 12, and Agnes 8. Katharine and Joan died during the life of Nicholas Rycote. He granted the manor to Nicholas Englefeld to hold for the term of his life with reversion to himself.
Nicholas Englefeld died on 1 April last. Sybil, Cecily and Agnes are next heirs in blood of Nicholas Rycote and Katharine, and heirs to the manor, which is held of the king in chief of the honor of Wallingford as half a knight’s fee, annual value 100s.
John son of Nicholas Englefeld is his heir, aged 4 years and more.

Bixgwbbyn, the manor, held of the earl of Oxford.
Bixbrand and Bromsden, the manors, held of the king of the honor of Wallingford by knight service. Annual value of the 4 manors together only £4 owing to annuities granted from them.

Aylesbury, 13s.4d. assize rents from various tenants, payable by equal parts at Lady Day and Michaelmas, held of the king in chief of ancient demesne of the crown, service unknown; 20d. service rent from various tenants, held of the prebendary of Aylesbury by suit of court there yearly; 12 a. arable, annual value 8s., and 11 a. meadow 11s., held of the same by attending the view of frankpledge there; and 1 ruinous watermill, held of the heir of John Devereux by 18d. rent and suit of court twice yearly, annual value beyond that nil.
Walton, 1 messuage with garden, annual value nil, 21 a. arable 10s., 4 a. meadow 40d., all of the lord of Walton by a rent of 10s. and suit of court every 3 weeks.

By her charter dated 16 Jan. last she granted to John Reynys, knight, Thomas Reynys, esquire, Peter Henewyke, William Campion, clerk, and John Eberton, the manor and lordship of Hinwick with the advowson of Farndish, described as all her holdings in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, to hold to them, and their heirs and assigns. They have held and taken the profits. Hinwick manor is held of Lord Latimer by knight service, annual value 6d.; 3 1/2 a. there of Lord Grey of Ruthin by 20s. rent; and 1 messuage, 60 a. pasture, 4 carucates and 1/2 virgate in Harrold and Hinwick of the same, annual value 40s.; and Huses manor in Farndish with 1 carucate, of John Bowele of Old Warden, annual value 20s.
She died on 20 Jan. John son of John and herself is her heir, aged 5 years and more.

Eleanor widow of John Teryngham and daughter and heir of Lawrence Pabenham, knight, held 13 a. in the parish of Blackmanstone in her demesne as of fee of the king in chief as part of the manor of Blackmanstone, which manor is held as 1 knight’s fee and by the service of finding an armed man arrayed as a hobelar for the king’s army towards Scotland, and 10s. rent for the ward of Dover castle, of which the 13 a. owe 8d. yearly, annual value 10d. the a.
She also held 37 a. in her demesne as of fee in the parish of St. Mary in the Marsh, 30s. in assize rents payable by equal parts at the 4 terms, and a rent of 12 hens and 1 cock at 3d. each, payable at Christmas by various tenants at Ivychurch, held of the archbishop of Canterbury of his manor of Allington and Lyminge by 20s. rent and suit of court every 3 weeks; annual value of the 37 a. and rent, 40s.

By her charter as above [no. 339] she granted 2 virgates in Farndish, with all her holdings in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire to John Reynys, knight, and others. The tenants attorned to them and they have held and taken the profits. The 2 virgates are held of the king of the duchy of Lancaster by a yearly rent of 1d., annual value 3s.4d.
She died on 22 Jan. last. John her son and heir is aged 5 years and more.

John son of Richard de Sancto Mauro, knight, lord of Castle Cary, held jointly with Margaret his wife, daughter of John Erlegh, to them and the heirs of their bodies by a grant of Richard his father, by a fine of 1408 [CP 25/1/201/34, no. 15], 3 messuages, 8 carucates, 60 a. meadow, 200 a. pasture and 80 a. wood in Blackford and Prestleigh with the advowson of Blackford. In Blackford 2 messuages, 5 carucates, 35 a. meadow, 100 a. pasture and 30 a. wood are held of Elizabeth lady Botreaux, service unknown, annual value £20; and in Prestleigh, 1 messuage, 3 carucates, 25 a. meadow, 100 a. pasture and 50 a. wood, are held of William Palton, knight, service unknown, annual value £10.

He held the manor of North Molton with knight’s fees and the advowsons of North Molton and Black Torrington to himself and the heirs male of his body of the king in chief by knight service, by the grant of John Chytterne and John Bromflet, clerks, to Richard Seymour, knight, and Ela his wife, Edmund Seyntlon, clerk, and William de Brythlegh, to them and the heirs male of the bodies of Richard and Ela with remainder to his right heirs, by a charter dated 13 Nov. 1378 and shown to the jurors. They held accordingly. Edmund and William de Brythlegh died during the lifetime of Richard and Ela, who had issue Richard, John and Nicholas. Richard the eldest son died without heirs male. John, the subject of this inquisition, was the 2nd son. He married Margaret, daughter of John Erlegh, esquire, and held the manor until his death. Nicholas the 3rd son was captured at Harfleur and held prisoner in France. He is said to be still alive.

He held the manor of Collingbourne Ducis with other lands by the grant to him, Philippa his wife and her heirs, by John Lincoln, clerk and Walter Topclyf by a fine of 1388 made with royal licence [CP 25/1/289/55, no. 178, licence not found]. It is held of the king in chief by a rent of 1 sparrowhawk or 2s. payable by the sheriff, annual value £10.
He died on 16 April last. Hugh son and heir of Philippa and himself is aged 24 years and more.
