Chalvedon. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee.
Bocham. The manor, part held of the earl of Gloucester by service of ¼ knight's fee, part of Sir William de Brewse by service of 1 knight's fee, and part of the abbot of Certes[eie] by service of 12d. rent and suit of court at Bocham and Coveham.
Katerham. The manor, held of John Dabernun by service of ¼ knight's fee.
James son of James Hansard, aged 30 and more, as they say, is his next heir.
Petition of Gundreda late the wife of the said John, showing that he formerly held the manor of Chauvedone of the honour of Banstede, and that he gave it to Roger de Covert, who granted it to the said John and Gundreda for their lives, but that James Haunsard his nephew, through an inquisition improperly made by men of another country, and without calling her, had put her out of it, as also out of the manor of Caterham, which Isabel countess of Glocester bought and gave to the said John and Gundreda, and praying redress.
Plea of warranty of charter between Roger de Covert and John Haunsard and Gundreda his wife of the manor of Chalvedon, whereby the said John and Gundreda acknowledged the manor to be the right of the said Roger of their gift, who warranted the same to them for their lives, rendering 1d. yearly, and doing all services to the chief lords, with reversion to himself and his heirs for ever, except the advowson of the church, which remains to the said Roger and his heirs.

Camel Regis. Sir John de Burgo the elder enfeoffed Sir Simon de la Mote of 10l. land in the manor, but he could not do it lawfully for John de Burgo the younger was then in seisin thereof. The manor was sometime the king's ancient demesne, through the death of earl William de Romare (Willielmi Comitis de Romare) without heir, whereby the manor was the escheat of king John, who afterwards gave it to Sir Hubert de Burgo, father of Sir John de Burgo the elder.

A messuage in the city was sometime the king's escheat through the death of Isaac of Norwich a Jew, and the king gave it to the master &c. of the hospital of St. Mary Hospreng' in frankalmoin, who afterwards sold it to the said Reginald, to him and his heirs : it is not the king's escheat through his death, but descends to his four daughters, one of whom named Avice, who has satisfied her sisters for their shares, now holds the whole. And because the liberty and custom of the city does not permit those by whom an inquisition is made to append their seals, the seal of the sheriff only is appended.

144. Hamo L'estrange (Extraneus).
Writ of plenius certiorari to the sheriff of Sussex, on the complaint of Robert de Staundon that a fourth part of the manor of Drayton near Cicestre was unjustly detained from him, 12 July, 3 Edw. I.
Sussex. Inq. Wednesday the eve of St. James, 3 Edw. 1.
Draytone. The said Hamo enfeoffed Urian de Sancto Petro of the whole manor, to him and his heirs for ever; who afterwards enfeoffed Robert de Stondone of a fourth part thereof, and he was in seisin on the day of the death of the said Hamo, and afterwards on Ash Wednesday the king's bailiffs took seisin of the whole manor. Afterwards when the said Urian recovered the manor from the king's hand, he delivered the whole manor, as well the part of the said Robert as his own, to farm to Geoffrey de Pichford.
Writ of plenius certiorari to the sheriff of Stafford, on the complaint of Simon de Cotes, that whereas King Henry granted the castle and manor of Certeleye, which were of Thomas de Ferrariis, to the said Hamo to be had according to the form of the dictum de Kenilworth, the said Hamo had unjustly disseised him of certain lands, &c. in Certeleye, and detained them all his life, upon which he seeks justice as they have come to the king's hands, 11 Nov. 3 Edw. I.
Stafford. Inq. Thursday before St. Hilary, 4 Edw. 1.
Volvanechae (?). The said Hamo unjustly disseised Simon de Kotes by force, of 200a. land there of the fee of Certelee.

145. Robert de Ros son of Robert de Ros of Werk.
Writ. Whereas the king, understanding that the said Robert held the manor of Cargou of Sapientia late the wife of William de Karliolo the younger, lately commanded the wardship of the same to be delivered to her, saving to Christiana late the wife of the said Robert her dower, and so that she should answer to the king for the issues of the wardship belonging to the king, and that meanwhile the escheator should enquire whether the said Robert held anything of the king in chief; and whereas the said Sapientia died, bequeathing the said wardship to Geoffrey de Tyllol, and the escheator took the same into the king's hand, but has not yet made inquisition; the escheator is commanded to enquire whether the said Robert held anything by which the wardship of his lands ought to pertain to the king. 2 May, 3 Edw. I.
Cumberland. Inq. The morrow of Holy Trinity, 3 Edw. I.
Cargou. The manor was held by the said Robert of the said Sapientia, and his reeve paid 32d. yearly cornage at the king's exchequer at Carlisle for her, but he held nothing of the king in chief, and did no other service to the king.

Writ of plenius certiorari to Guichard de Charrun and William de Norburgh, on the complaint of Henry his son, that Peter his brother had intruded on a messuage bequeathed to him by the said Alan, 15 May, 3 Edw. I.
[Northumberland.] Inq. Friday after St. Vincent, 4 Edw. I.
Newcastle upon Tyne. Every burgess according to the customs of the borourgh can bequeath lands &c. which he has of his own purchase to whomsoever he will: the said Alan in his testament bequeathed to the said Henry a messuage which he had of his own purchase; but Peter his son and heir, by an assize of novel disseisin recovered the same against the said Henry, and infeoffed Letitia his daughter of the same, retaining three shops. And the said Letitia comes and says that she is in seisin of the said messuage except the three shops, and prays that she may not be prejudiced through this inquisition.

His aunts on the side of his father and their heirs, are his next heirs, but their names and ages are unknown, because they are not dwelling in Cumberland.

Morton. The manor, tenure unknown ; for, William de Tracy who held the barony of Braneys and Morton of the king in chief, took part (fuit in auxilium) in the martyrdom of St. Thomas of Canterbury, for which deed he went into exile and the barony became the escheat of King Henry the king's ancestor (avi). The same William had a son Henry de Tracy the hunchback (le Bozu) born in Normandy, who long after came to Geoffrey son of Peter, chief justice of England, grandfather of John son of John, praying him to aid him in recovering his inheritance, and for so doing he gave him the said manor of Morton to be held to him and his heirs of the said Henry and his heirs, by service of a sparrow-hawk, and he always did homage to the said Henry: afterwards Richard earl of Cornwall to whom King Henry gave the manor of Braneys exacted homage and service from the manor of Morton, which he never possessed : the jury therefore know not from whom the manor is held.
