Writ, to the escheator 'ultra Trentam' referring to a writ to a former escheator, and ordering him to cause Joan late the wife of the said Robert to have 20 marks land in tenancy until her dower shall be assigned, 13 May, 2 Edw. I.
Nottingham; wapentake of Turgerton and Lye. Inq. and extent (undated).
Sutton. The manor (extent given), held of Guiscard de Charun and his heirs, rendering 11s. yearly and foreign service.
Richard his son, aged 8 at the feast of St. Michael, 2 Edw. I., is his next heir.
Nottingham; wapentake of Bassetlaw (Bers'). Inq. and extent (undated).
Warsop alias Warshop. The manor (extent given with names of tenants) with the advowson of the church, including lands in Syrbroc and Sulholm, held of the king in chief by service of ½ knight's fee; but the said Robert did not die seised of the manor, excepting the advowson of the church, because Margery late the wife of John de Lexinton holds it in dower, with 10l. land in Tuxforne (?), all which will return after her death to the said Robert's heirs.
Allerton. A moiety and more (extent given), including a wood in the forest called Bysscale, held of the earl of Lincoln by service of doing suit at his court of Allerton.
Cotum (extent given), tenure unspecified.
Eykering. A manor (extent given) with the advowson of a moiety of the church, tenure unspecified.
[Unspecified.] A certain rent is held by Roger de Drayton of the gift of William de Sutton, father of the said Robert, for a thicket for woodcocks (pro uno bozono ad wyte cokis) worth ½d.

A messuage &c., 200a. arable, 21a. meadow, 51a. pasture, a windmill, foreign wood, 4l. 5s. 6½d. rent of assize &c. with the advowson of the church, held of the honour of Reyleg' by service of suit at the court of the honour, and a gilt spur (una calcaria superaurata) or 6d. yearly, and scutage, when it happens, for 2 knights.

La Newelaunde. 458a. arable, 49a. meadow and pasture, 10s. 2d. rent of assize, and a messuage and garden, sometime held of the king in chief by service of 2 knights' fees, but he alienated them all in parcels to divers tenants before he died, excepting the messuage.

Hundred of Aungre. He did not die seised of any tenement in the hundred, because he gave the manor of Theyden before he died, to John his son by Hawis his wife, who is seised thereof by his guardian Richard Baynard.

Lexonden. The hundred, held of the king in chief for 4 marks yearly, and worth 8 marks besides.

Estorp. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, sometime held of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee, but the said Ralph demised the same, excepting some parcels which he alienated to divers tenants, to Walter de Essex for his life, for 40l. yearly, whereof the said Walter satisfied the said Robert for ten years before his death, of which seven are yet to come.

65. Thomas de Rothewell alias Rouwell, clerk.
Writ, on the complaint of Nicholas le Archer that the escheator had taken into the king's hand ½ virgate land in Sybretoft which the said Thomas held of him, 8 March, 2 Edw. I.
[Northampton.] Inq. Wednesday the morrow of St. Cuthbert, 2 Edw. I.
Sibertoft. ½ virgate land was held by the said Thomas of the said Nicholas, who holds the manor of the king in chief by serjeanty of bearing the king's bow with the king through all the forests of England. The said ½ virgate was sometime of the said serjeanty and was alienated by the ancestors of the said Nicholas, and when R. Passelewe made inquisitions throughout England concerning alienated serjeanties, he rated this land to the king's use at 2s. 6d. yearly to be paid to the sheriff of Northampton; and the said Thomas did no other service except ¾d. yearly to the said Nicholas, to whom the jury say precisely that he did homage.
Roger his nephew, son of Alice his eldest sister, and Emma another sister, are his next heirs, and of full age.
Memorandum (by the escheator ?). Be it known that another inquisition which he has caused to be made by the king's command says precisely that the said Thomas held of the king in chief without intermediary.

Habingtone. The manor (extent given) including pasture in a marsh called Wendimor, held of the king in chief of the honour of Boulogne by service of 1 knight's fee, suit at the court of the honour at London (?) twice yearly, and 4s.
Habingeton. 6a. held of the heirs of Robert de Fugers (?) of the fee of the barony of Scalar' by foreign service; 4a. of the same barony, held of Alan le Moyne by service of 4d.; and 1a. held of Alan de Berke.
Steplmordon. A close of 1a., ½a. meadow, 65a. arable, and 8s. rent of assize, held of Lady Eleanor de Scalar' of the same barony, doing 12½d. foreign service; 10a. arable and 5s. 11d. rent of assize, held of the prior of the hospital of Jerusalem, by service of 5s. and foreign service, viz. a third part of chattels on a death; and 2s. rent held of Robert de Bresci by service of a pair of silvered spurs worth 3d.

Writ (of certiorari) on the complaint of Maud late the wife of the said William, that [the escheator's] ministers in co. Cambridge had taken into the king's hand [certain lands] of which she was enfeoffed [with] her husband, ... 2 Edw. 1. (fragment).

Dorset. Extent, Monday after St. Scholastica, 2 Edw. I.
Cherebergh. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, including a common pasture called Brodermerse, was held by a certain Norman named Richard le Mareschal for life of the king's gift, and he demised it to one Richard le Mareschal an Englishman, whom the king enfeoffed of the manor, to him and his heirs for ever, rendering a horsecomb (strigilem) yearly to the king for all service; and the said Richard gave it to Thomas his son and heir, who died seised thereof in demesne and not Richard his father.
Julia, daughter of Thomas le Mareschal, aged 2 at the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross next, is next heir of the said Thomas.

Extent or summary of the above manors &c. Alice late the wife of the said Gilbert, swore not to marry without the king's licence, and promised to restore to the king any writing in her custody which touches him; and 60s. are allotted to the heir of the said G[ilbert] which are in excess in her dower; and she shall have the wood of Arnehou and ⅓ of the chase and pasture of Salcet.
Assignment of dower (undated) to the said Alice of the manors of Wotton, Billinge, Somardeby and Boby, with the wood of Arnho, saving to the heir of the said Gilbert two parts of the chase &c. which he ought to have in the forest of Salcet by reason of the said wood, and rendering 60s. yearly to the said heir. Westmoreland. Extent, Monday after the quinzaine of the Holy Trinity, 2 Edw. I.
Kyrkeby in Kendale. The castle, manor and town (extent given), including moieties of the mills of Rispeton, Appeltweht, Kirkeby, Patton, and Dylaker, the fishery of the force (de Fors), lands &c. in Helsinton, the farms of Grenering and Hagayl, a meadow called Rispetunhenge, the farms of Beauconquayte, Staveleye and Stirkele town, the meadow of Leythilde, the farms of Schalqratrig and Hotun, the farm of tenants in the forest with Schoureschale and Oxinholme, a slate quarry, part of the forest of Ridale with Satsondolf, Becmelbrid, and Curkerdale, the farms of Gresmere with a moiety of the mill, and Langeden with a moiety of the mill and herbage of the forest, Crostweyk with the farm, herbage, and mill, a moiety of Yverholm (?), the farm of Chefdor, Roger's Island in Wynendamere, small fisheries above Kirkeby, rent from free tenants of Westmoreland, &c. The tenants in Kenetemere of John de Bella Aqua, who married Laderina one of the sisters and heirs of Peter de Brus, no longer do suit at the fulling mill of Kirkeby, and William de Wynd [eshoure] has raised a mill at Grarig to the damage of the mill of Patton.
This manor fell to the pourparty of Margaret de Ros (his wife), younger daughter (sic) and one of the heirs of Peter de Brus, who held it of the king in chief.
Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of Sapientia, late the wife of William de Karliolo the younger, that the escheator had taken into the king's hand certain lands &c. in Cargou, which the said Robert held for life by her demise. 25 June, 2 Edw. I.
[Cumberland.] Inq. Wednesday before St. Michael, 2 Edw. I.
Cargou. The manor (extent given) was not held of the king in chief, nor by the demise of the said Sapientia for life, but the said Robert died vested and seised thereof in demesne as of fee, and held it of the said Sapientia, rendering yearly a falcon or 1 mark of silver, and doing for her the foreign service pertaining to the king, viz.—32d. cornage at the king's exchequer at Carlisle.
