Haselyngfeld. A messuage, 53½a. land, 2a. meadow, pasture, 21s. rent of assize, and customs of customers worth 32s. 1d., held of the king in chief by service of 1/8 knight's fee.

A capital messuage, 60a. land, 9a. meadow, 3a. wood, 49s. 6½d. rent, 6s. 10d. rent of cottars, and 14 virgates land held by customers, held of the inheritance of Beatrice sometime his wife, with other lands, &c. in co. Bedford of the same inheritance, of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee.

A capital messuage, 160a. arable, 5a. meadow, 9a. pasture, 2½a. wood, another pasture worth 6s. yearly, 29s. 6d. rent of assize of free tenants, 6¼ virgates in villenage, 11s. from customers, and 3s. 4d. from customers for Ravenesden a member of Ronhal, held of the inheritance of the said Beatrice, as above, of her pourparty of the barony of Bedeford; and 2s. 6d. are rendered yearly thence for hidage, and to the church of Ronhal 3d. for caruage.

Dylewyck. A capital messuage, 357½a. arable, 15a. pasture, a park containing 140a., a windmill, 49s. 7½d. rent of assize, 21s. 3¼d. rent of customers, who shall also give 5 quarters oats or 12d. for a quarter at the feast of the Purification and 26s. 8d. aid at Michaelmas, 5¼ virgates land in villenage, hidage 7s. 6d., and pleas, &c. 10s. yearly, held as above; and 6s. hidage are rendered thence yearly.

Kerenton alias Kerynton. A capital messuage, 160a. arable, 6a. pasture, 30a. pasture for sheep, 203a. wood, a third part of a water-mill, 29s. rent of free tenants, 5½ virgates land in villenage, 2 cottars and 1 customer, 9s. tithing silver, and 4 capons rent, held as above; and there are rendered yearly thence for sheriff's view 13s. 4d., for hidage 16d., and to the church of Kerynton 8d. for caruage.
Hertford. Extent. Wednesday, 3 April, 14 Edw. I.
Patemere in the hundred of Edwynestre. The manor (extent given), held for life by purchase from John de Patemere, finding the said John meanwhile his necessaries if he should wish to remain with the same William, and rendering him yearly 66s. 8d.; the manor is held of the bishop of London by service of 1 knight's fee, and ought to render him yearly 6s. 1d. for sheriff's aid and castle guard, and suit is due at the bishop's court of Stortford; and after the death of the said William the manor ought to revert to the said John and his heirs.

Brendhalle in Bolinton in the half-hundred of Claveringg. The manor (extent given), held of Fulk de Bat[honia] by service of 1d., by purchase from the said Fulk; and the manor was disputed because Sir John de Bathon[ia] claims right in the same, and brought a writ of morte dancestor against the said William, which is still pending.

Stanstede in the hundred of Hengford. The manor (extent given), all held in wardship through the death of one Robert le Burser, whose son and heir named John is 24 and more; except a moiety of the water-mill and 2a. pasture and 1a. wood, which the said William held by purchase, as of fee.

Weston in the hundred of Hengham. The manor (extent given), held for life, of the enfeoffment of the heirs of Thomas de Wancy, with reversion to the said heirs, rendering yearly to Thomas de Monte Caniso 1lb. pepper and 1d., to the king 7d. for sursise and 1d. for wardpenny, to Robert le Fermer 12d., to Michael de Weston 5d., and to Sir Thomas de Bello Campo 60s. for 2 watermills, of which one is a fulling mill.

Pilton in the hundred of Daneseye. The manor (extent given) purchased by the said William and held of Henry de Cramavyle, rendering 3s. yearly and doing suit at his court of Daneseye, and at the hundred (court) of Daneseye.
Endorsed:—This land is in the hand of the queen by reason of the idiocy of John de Hispannia.
Essex. Extent, Wednesday, 3 April, 14 Edw. I.
Wilinghale in the hundred of Dunmawe. The manor (extent given) purchased by Sir William and held of the earl of Oxford by service of ⅓ knight's fee, and rendering 40d. yearly to the heirs of John de Britayn for the guard of Richemund.

Finchingfeld in the hundred of Hengford. The manor (extent given) held as of fee, by the demise of one John de Hysp[ani]a, whose manor it sometimes was, of the earl of Oxford by service of ½ knight's fee, and rendering yearly to the earl 20s. for the guard of Richemund.

Beauchaump Willam. The manor (extent given) including a meadow called Rommedwe, held, of the inheritance of Beatrice sometime his wife, of the earl of Oxford for ½ and a third part of ½ knight's fee.
Essex. Extent, Wednesday, 3 April, 14 Edw. I.
Manhal. The manor with Brenynge and Bolesgrave was of the purchase of the said William.
Manhal. The manor (extent given) held of the earl of Gloucester by service of ½ knight's fee, and rendering yearly to the bishop of Ely 24s., to William Pucyn 2s., to the abbot of Waleden 2s., to Simon Wiger 8d., and to the heir of William le Butyler 1lb. pepper, price 6d.
Brenyng. The hamlet (extent given) held of Geoffrey de Aschedon by service of 11s. 10d. yearly.
Bolesgrave. The hamlet (extent given) held of the earl of Hereford by service of 3s. yearly; it was taken into the king's hand by command of the justices of eyre on account of the withdrawal (subtraccionis) of the said William three weeks before John de Stokes recovered seisin thereof before the said justices.

Hengham Sibile in the hundred of Hengford. The manor, two parts whereof the said William sometime held as of his own inheritance, and his mother held a third part in dower; but long ago the said William had demised the said two parts to one Roger Appelgar for a term of years, within which he sold to the said Roger and his heirs the said tenements in fee; but in the time of the war in England he ejected him, and retained the said two parts until the last eyre of the justices in Essex, when certain daughters and heirs of William Appelgar, son and heir of the said Roger brought a writ against the said William, and recovered seisin of the said two parts; those tenements were then in the king's hand through the withdrawal of the said William, but he held a third part of the manor (extent given). N.B.—This extent has been ruled across.
Hengham Sibile. A third part of the manor (extent given), tenure unspecified.
Rokehaye hamlet. 40a. arable and 2a wood, held of his own purchase by the said William, but disputed because John de Bathonia claims right in the same.

Leyre de la Haye in the hundred of Wenstre. The manor (extent given), including a wood within the king's forest, and 20a. land in Leyre Bretun rendering 2s. yearly, held of his own inheritance, of the king in chief of the honour of Boulogne, by service of ½ knight's fee, rendering yearly to the prior of St. Ouen's (Audoeni), Rouen, 2s., and 1d. for ward penny, and doing suit at the king's court of Witham.

Strattford. 2 messuages, 160a. arable, 6½a. meadow, 13a. pasture, 10a. wood, 66s. 8d. rent of assize, 11 hens worth 11d., and 69 eggs worth 1½d., held in wardship through the death of Miles de Stratford, who held the same of the said William by knight's service.
William son of the said Miles, aged 21½ at the feast of the Purification last, is his next heir.

Suffolk. Inq. 6 April, 14 Edw. I.
Edwardeston alias Eadwardton. The manor (extent given) including 8l. yearly from the earl Marshal for Staverton, Brumswell and Eyk, held of his own inheritance of the earl of Cornwall by knight's service, suit at
the earl's court of Eye, and 2s. 2½d. three times every two years for guard of the castle of Eye; and it is the head manor from which are held the manors of Staverton, Brumswell, Eyk, Wyffarston and Stansted, and certain tenements in Goldingham and Halstead, Holeton and Brantham, all which he ought to defend against the said earl for 12 knights' fees.
Kers[ey]. A messuage in the market, acquired by the said William.
Worcester. Extent, Monday after the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 14 Edw. I.
Scheldele Beuchaup alias Scheldesleye. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants) held of Lady Petronilla de Tauneye in chief, service unspecified.
The firstborn son of the aforesaid (sic) is aged 6 years, as the jury understand.
Writ to the escheator to enquire what lands Miles de Stratford held of William de Monte Caniso when he died, which lands were taken into the king's hand with those of the said William on account of certain transgressions, and whether William his son is his next heir and of full age, as he says, 25 Feb. 14 Edw. I.
Suffolk. Inq. Saturday before St. Gregory, 14 Edw. I.
The said William after the death of the said Miles, took into his own hands the lands (extent given) which the said Miles held of him of the manor of Leyre by service of 1 knight's fee, together with the wardship of William his son and heir. William, aged 21½, is son and next heir of the said Miles, and there is no reason but that his inheritance ought to be restored to him.

611. Peter de Seyvill, an idiot (freneticus idiota).
Writ to the escheator demanding the cause why previous writs had not been executed, 20 July, 14 Edw. I.
Return (undated) reciting writ of 18 May, 14 Edw. I., requiring the escheator to execute a former writ of plenius certiorari to enquire concerning the condition of the said Peter, and the alienations of lands, &c. made by him, and to commit the custody of the said Peter, with his lands, goods and chattels, &c. to John de Dychton who has to wife Placencia sister of the said Peter, during the king's pleasure, provided that the said Peter his wife and children should be well and honourably maintained out of the issues therof.
[York.] Transcript of inq. made at York by men of the wapentakes of Osgotecros, Stayncros and Aggebrigg' (undated).
The said Peter is manifestly frantic (freneticus) and an idiot, and altogether incapable' of managing his lands or affairs.
Goutlackarres. The manor held by the said Peter, viz.—three parts of the heir of Richard le Botiler of Sandele, and the fourth part of Sir John de Heton, by service of 3d. yearly; of which manor he gave a mill to Agnes de Seyvill his sister four years ago and then he was incapable.
Skelebrok. 3½ bovates land held of Sir Ran[ulph] de Blamustre by service of 10s. yearly; which he demised whilst of sound mind to Robert son of Stephen de Kirkeby for twenty years, rendering 26s. 8d. yearly to the said Peter, whereof eight years have elapsed.
Smetheton. A messuage and 4 bovates land held of the earl of Lincoln by service of doing suit at the earl's court of Pontefract; which he demised whilst of sound mind to William de Seyvill his uncle for fourteen years, whereof seven have elapsed.
Thurleston. 42s. rent of assize held of the heir of John de Hoderode, whereof nothing is alienated.
Aldeham. 60s. land held of the heir of Roger de Wamwell, which he demised whilst of sound mind to John de Wamwell for twenty years, six years ago, for a sum of money in hand and 4 marks yearly.
The said John de Dychton is incapable in tenements and goods, and weak in knowledge and reason, not only by the examination of the escheator himself but by the testimony of trustworthy knights and of the jury, wherefore the escheator dared not commit the custody of the said Peter and of his lands, &c. to him, until he should further certify the king; nevertheless he sent this inquisition with the king's writs by the said John to the court, but afterwards understood that he had not delivered them; he therefore sends this on the last royal mandate.

Barnestaple alias Bardestaple. The tenement of La Barr, held of the king in chief by serjeanty of three barbed arrows and a salmon on the king's coming in to Exemore to hunt; and after the death of the said Maurice the tenement was taken into the king's hand by reason of the journey of Roger Attebarr alias de la Barre into Ireland.
Maud de la Barre alias Atabarre, wife of the said Roger, who survives, kinswoman of the said Maurice, is his next heir.

Boiliston. A moiety of the manor held of Roger de Rideware, for homage and service of 1d. rent, and by doing foreign service pertaining to ¼ knight's fee. He held nothing of the king in the county.
Joan his daughter, aged 9 at the feast of St. John the Baptist last, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari, 15 June, 15 Edw. I. Endorsed with return as in the above inquisition. He held nothing of the king in the bailiwick of Thomas de Normanvill.
