NORTHUMBERLAND. Inquisition. Newcastle upon Tyne castle. 1 April.
She held 12 husbandlands and 12 cottages in Lorbottle of the king in chief by knight service and a rent of 10s., annual value 2 marks and no more because of destruction by the Scots.
She died on 22 Sept. 1403. Robert de Ogle, senior, knight, her son and heir is aged 30 years and more.
William de Dene, Thomas Wylkynson and Thomas Hamyll have held the premises and taken the profits by their own authority without any grant.

One messuage and 12 a. in Ellough, which were held by John de Gyselham, came into the king’s hands when he was outlawed on 20 March 1357 at the suit of Thomas Gardener in a plea of account, and they are still so held. They are held of Edmund Berry, esquire, in socage, service unknown, annual value 10s.
He died on 19 July 1372. William, John and Henry, his sons, are his next heirs by the custom of the vill of Ellough and other vills nearby. Each of them is aged 36 years and more.

Robert de Leghe, knight, and Margaret his wife have occupied, and still occupy, the half of Killamarsh, and take the profits, title unknown. Elizabeth widow of Philip de Dercy, knight, and Robert de Legh and Margaret have held Barlborough since his death, title also unknown.

He was an idiot from birth with insufficient intelligence to administer his lands and tenements. He held half a messuage with courtyard in Ashford of the dean and college of the free chapel of St. Stephen in the palace of Westminster by fealty, suit of court at Ashford every 3 weeks and half a rent of 4s., annual value 3s.4d. It was taken into the hands of Edward III and is still held by the king.
He died on 24 March 1396. Alexander de Appelford, his brother and next heir, is aged 50 years and more.

The king by letters patent shown to the jurors [CPR 1405–8, p.145] granted on 1 January 1406 to John Tiptot, knight, all the lands to the value of 20 marks then in his hands owing to the minority until the full age of an heir, and so Tiptot has held them.

He died on 6 Sept. 1405. James Boteler, his son and heir, is aged 22 years and more. Thomas de Lancaster, steward of England, has occupied it and taken the profits since his death by virtue of the king’s grant by letters patent [CPR 1405–8, p.88].

In Eastbury he held 1 toft, 2 virgates, 1/2 a. meadow, 2 a. wood and 7s. rent in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by the service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee, annual value 10s.
Long before his death he gave the manor of Eastbury, except the above, and all his other lands in the county to Reynold Kentwode, John Wright, John Hankokes and their heirs by his charter, dated at Eastbury on 16 June 1405 and shown to the jurors. They were seised long before his death and still hold them.
He died on 14 Aug. last. Ralph Arches is his kinsman and next heir, being the son of John, son of Edith his sister, aged 28 years and more.

He died on 14 Aug. 1406. Ralph son of John Arches, son of Edith his sister, is next heir, aged 28 years and more. Ralph has taken the issues of the first parcel by the grant of Peter Besyles, late escheator, since the death of John Estbury, and Thomas Estbury has taken the rest, held of William Hoo, title unknown.

He held 3 parts of the manor of Watford, as half a knight’s fee, and 1 1/2 messuages and 1 1/4 virgates there, of the king in chief by the law or courtesy of England after the death of Agnes his wife, of her inheritance, with remainder to George son of Nicholas de Burneby, father of Eustace de Burneby, father of Agnes, as uncle and heir of Agnes.
George de Burneby is aged 40 years and more.
The annual values are: 3 parts of manor beyond the payment of £20 at the exchequer by equal parts at Michaelmas and Easter, 40 marks; the 1 1/2 messuages and 1 1/4 virgates, 25s.8d. These latter are held of the manor, service unknown.

She held a third part of the manor of Stoke Orchard, except 1 a., and a third part of half the manor of Coberley, in dower for life by the assignment of Nicholas Mattesdon and Margaret, one daughter and heir of Thomas Berkeley, of full age, with reversion to them; because these with the manor of Chilcote were allotted to them. The 1 a. in Stoke Orchard, the half manor of Coberley, and the manor of Eldersfield in Worcestershire were allotted to Thomas Brugge and Alice, the other daughter and heir, also of full age, by partition between them.

SOMERSET. Inquisition. Crewkerne, 12 June.
She held in her demesne as of fee 6s.8d. rent from a half toft and 36 a. arable and meadow in Highbrooks by Somerton with the reversion of the half toft and 36 a. after the deaths of John Sutton, Joan his wife, and John and Richard their sons, all of whom are still living and hold for the term of their lives. Owing to the death of John Mautravers, father of Maud, who held of the king in chief by knight service, this rent, being her portion as one of the daughters and heirs of John Mautravers, was taken into the king’s hands and so remains.
She died about 1 Nov. 1402. Elizabeth, the other daughter of John Mautravers, who married Humphrey de Stafford, junior, knight, is her heir, aged 22 years and more.
Since her death the rent has come to the king by the escheator owing to her minority and the partition of the inheritance.

John Hadle and Thomasia his wife held the manor of Milton by Gravesend in their demesne as of fee and granted it by charter to Reynold Cobham of Randall, knight, by the name of Reynold Cobham, esquire, and Elizabeth his wife. They had bought it jointly with Arnold Savage, knight, and John Seint Germayn, citizen and grocer of London, from William Daubeney, William Goldyngton and Peter Taddelowe, being formerly of Simon Beverle, knight, in exchange for all those lands and tenements which Reynold and Elizabeth held in Stepney, Hackney, Stratford and Langthorns and elsewhere in Middlesex and Essex which were formerly held by Thomas Morice, grandfather of Reynold. So he died seised in his demesne as of fee of the manor of Milton jointly with Elizabeth, who is still living. It is held of the king in chief as a member of the barony of Monchensy by the service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; annual value 100s.
He died on 12 Oct. last. Thomas his son and heir is aged 9 years and more.
