1000 ALICE WIFE OF WILLIAM BERNDHURST
Writ 16 June 1404.
GLOUCESTER. Inquisition. Gloucester. 23 July.
Peter Bythoutethyate formerly held the manor of Whittington with the advowson of the king in chief by knight service, and granted it to Richard Croupes, senior, for life with successive remainders to Richard his bastard son, Alice wife of William Barndhurst by the name of Alice Croupes, and the right heirs of Richard senior, who married Isabel and had issue Margaret. She married Robert Lynham, and they had issue Margery, Alice and Elizabeth. After the death of Richard senior the right in fee simple descended to Margaret, and after her death to her three daughters. On the death of Richard senior, Richard junior entered and held the manor until he died, when Alice entered in accordance with the grant. She married Edmund Hakelyt. Of the three daughters of Margaret, Alice married William Carter of Great Rissington, and Margery married John Gros of Oxford.
Edmund Hakelyt died, and afterwards by a fine of 1373 [CP 25(1) 78/76, no. 520] between Edward le Despenser, knight, and William and Alice Carter, the reversion of a third part of the manor, after the death of Alice, was granted to Edward le Despenser. He married Elizabeth and had issue Thomas le Despenser, knight, to whom the right descended. He married Constance and had issue Richard and died. Richard, who has the reversion of this third part, is now in the king’s ward.
John Groos and Margery, and Elizabeth her sister, by their charter dated at Oxford on 25 March 1373, granted their reversion of two parts to William Smyth, perpetual vicar of Brixworth in Northamptonshire, and Nicholas Wakere of Leafield in Oxfordshire. Alice attorned to them. William Smyth by deed dated at Brixworth on 1 June 1374 quitclaimed to Wakere.
Alice afterwards married William Barndhurst. By a fine made in 1375 and confirmed in 1376 [CP 25(1) 78/77, no. 540] the reversion of two parts of the manor was conveyed by Nicholas Wakere to John Dauntesey, knight, after the death of Alice and William Barndhurst who held for life. By fine of 1380 [CP 25(1) 78/79, no. 26] John Dauntesey conveyed this reversion to Elizabeth wife of Edward le Despenser, knight, for life, with remainder to Thomas his son. Elizabeth is still alive, and Richard son and heir of Thomas is aged 8 years and more.
Alice died on 1 June. Who is her next heir is unknown. The annual value of the whole manor and advowson is 20 marks.
