NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Norhampton, 13 January, 15 Richard II.
He held no lands etc. in the county, but he held the under-mentioned knight’s fee.
Auescote and Ednescote in the parish of Patteshull. One knight’s fee, held by Thomas Maundevill, who is still living.
Date of death not known. John his son, aged 3 years and more, is his heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Herterpole, Thursday after the Epiphany, 15 Richard II.
He was seised of the reversion of the under-mentioned manor, which Maud late the wife of Roger de Clifford his father holds for life as jointly enfeoffed thereof with the said Roger with the king’s licence. The said Maud is still living.
Hert and Hertpole. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on 4 October last. Heir as above, aged 2 years and more.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday after the Epiphany, 15 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned two parts of a third part of the manor of Skelton; out of which he granted by deed a yearly rent of 100s. to William de Therlkeld, knight, for life. He was also seised of the reversion of the third part of the said two-parts [of the said third part] (fn. 1) of the manor, which Maud late the wife of Roger de Clifford his father holds in dower.
He was seised of the under-mentioned reversion of a burgage tenement in Carlisle.
He was seised in joint feoffment with Elizabeth his wife, who is still living, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Carleton and Lammanby, by gift of Roger de Clifford, late lord of Westmoreland.
Skelton. Two-parts of a third part of the manor, held of the king in chief by homage and fealty and service of rendering 5s. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle for cornage.
Carlisle. The reversion of a burgage tenement held for life by Richard de Cardewe and Joan his wife. It is held of the king in burgage by rendering 4d. yearly.
Carleton and Lammanby by Skelton. A messuage, a corn-mill, 100a. land, 20a. meadow, 16s. 6 1/2d. rent, and rents of 1 lb. cummin and 1/2 lb. pepper, held of the baron of Greystok by fealty only.

WESTMORLAND. Inq. taken at Apelby, Monday after the Epiphany, 15 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned castle and manor of Appelby, manor of Langeton, castle and manor of Burgh (with the exceptions mentioned below), services of tenants etc. in Netherburgh, manor of Kyrkeby-stephane and Pendragun (except Sourethwayt), rents listed below from Hertlay to Clibburn and the advowsons of the churches of Kyrkebythore and Merton.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of two-thirds of the under-mentioned forest of Wynfell, rent of oats in Cliffton and office of sheriff of Westmorland, and the reversion of the remaining third, which Maud formerly wife of Roger de Clifford father of the said Thomas holds as part of her dower.
He died seised of the reversions of the under-mentioned manors of Wynton and Kingesmeburne, lands etc. in Trompilsoureby (sic) and Cliffton, the rents listed below from Cabergh to Clibburn and the advowson of the church of Burgham, which the said Maud holds as part of her dower.
He died seised of the reversion of the under-mentioned castle and manor of Burgham, which the said Maud holds by feoffment to her and the said Roger and the heirs of their bodies.
He died seised jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who is still living, of the under-mentioned manor of Soureby, by gift of the said Roger to them and the heirs of their bodies.
Appelby. The castle, which is ruinous, and manor.
Langeton. The manor.
Burgh. The castle and manor, except the cow pastures of Knollow, Skrythergill, Calrethowland, Aldpark, Swynstiwath, Mongtonlake, Thornehowegaile, Borwanes, Seyneryg, Strykscales and Heggilscale and the park called Aldpark, which are held by the said Maud as part of her dower, the reversion belonging to the right heirs of the said Thomas.
Netherburgh. Services of free tenants, the following are named: Thomas de Derby, John de Oxenthwayth, John Dicconson, John Bowet, John Spenser, Joan daughter of Thomas de Mallerstang, William Smith, Robert Douglas and Thomas Culverdowff. A farm called ’rikesilver’ of 2d. yearly from each of 56 messuages. 6 bovates of land pertaining to the office of constable of the castle were granted to John Crakenthorp for the life of the said John by deed of the said Thomas with the king’s licence; also a rent of 12 quarters of oats from Cabergh and Helbek pertains to the said office. Thomas Skayk holds le Redegateclosse, rendering 4s. 3d. yearly.
Wynton. The reversion of the manor, held by Maud in dower.
Kyrkebystephane and Pendragun. The castle and manor, which is almost destroyed, except a cow pasture called Sourethwayth, which the aforesaid Maud holds in dower, the reversion belonging to the right heirs of the said Thomas. Robert de Thornburgh holds as of the right of Isabel his wife a place called Karlengill and a meadow called le Terne, rendering 8s. yearly.
Soureby by Burgh. The manor.
Kyngesmeburne. The reversion of the manor.
Burgham. The castle and manor.
Wynfell. The forest. There is a rent of 20 quarters of oats from Clibburn, Wyanderwayth and Burgham. A rent of 30s. yearly from the same towns pertains to the office of chief forester, which was granted with the king’s licence to Roger de Hornby for life by deed of the aforesaid Roger de Clifford. The aforesaid Maud’s share includes 40a. land called Blancheland, Qwynholme and Barrygholme and 5 messuages called le Wodeside.
Trompilsoureby. A messuage and 16a. land and meadow.
Clifton. A tenement and 16a. land and meadow.
Clifton. A rent of 22 quarters 6 bushels of oats.

He was seised of the under-mentioned manors of Temedebury and Ekynton in fee tail jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who is still living, namely to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Roger de Clifford his father, by grant of Robert Tynton, parson of the church of Uffynton, Nicholas Stayngreve, parson of the church of Herdebury, Thomas Wayte, William Corbrigg, parson of the church of Kirkebythore, Adam de Corry and Nicholas de Scardeborgh.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the reversion of the under-mentioned manor of Severnestoke, which Euphemia Haselarton holds for life of her inheritance; and of the under-mentioned advowson.
Temedebury. The manor, held of Brian de Cornewayle, as of his barony of Borford by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Ekynton. The manor, held of the abbot of Westminster by rendering 14 marks yearly as fee-farm.
Severnestok. The manor, held of the heirs of Edward le Despencer, as of the honor of Gloucester.

YORK. Inq. taken at Skipton in Craven, 8 January, 15 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned castle and two-thirds of the manor of Skypton in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, by virtue of a charter of Edward II whereby the castle and manor, with all knights’ fees and advowsons of churches and chapels pertaining thereto, were granted to Robert de Clifford his great-grandfather, and the heirs of the body of the said Robert. John de Scardeburgh has 40s. yearly for life therefrom by his grant. He was also seised of the reversion of a third part of the said manor which maud de Clifford his mother holds in dower for life.
He held the under-mentioned 3 messuages etc. in Skypton in his demesne as of fee.
He was seised of the under-mentioned reversion of the manor of Maltby.
He was seised in fee tail, as aforesaid, of the under-mentioned knights’ fees and reversions of knights’ fees.
Skypton. The castle and two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held, together with the third part of the manor which Maud de Clifford his mother holds in dower, of the king in chief by service of a fortieth part of an earldom, to wit, the earldom of Aumale. The extent includes 17a. meadow called Watterwro, a market every Saturday and fairs on the feasts of St Martin in the Winter and St James, with a court of burgesses and other profits, 2 parks called le Oldpark and le Newepark, 38s. 5d. of free rent called ‘wapentakefynes’ from divers knights’ fees, and a court held every three weeks; and the appurtenances comprise: Bradleigh, Paytbrig, Stretton, Lobbewith, Skybedon, Hertlyngton, Appultrewyk, Doxhill and Sutton. 26s. 10d. rent from divers free tenants.

Crokerys. A wood so called, with a lodge in it.
Berdenforest. A chase so called, wherein are 14 tenements for vaccaries, and a watermill for corn. Two-thirds of the agistment therein and in the wood called Skirakes are worth 8s. 11d. yearly.
Skeibeden. 24 bovates of land in the hands of tenants at farm.
Thorleby. 24 bovates of land.
Stretton. 2 bovates of land called Chetlond and 4 tofts lying waste.
Skypton. 3 messuages and 60a. land, held of the king in chief by fealty only.
Maltby. The reversion of the manor, which Euphemia de Heslarton holds for life of her inheritance, held of John duke of Lancaster, by knight’s service.
Wath and Wombewell. One knight’s fee, held by Thomas Flemyng, knight.
Heleghfeld, Oturburn, Hanlyth, Malgham and Hawekeswyke. One knight’s fee held by Peter Mauleverer, knight.
Rilleston, Scothorp and Heton. Three-fourths of a knight’s fee, held by William de Rilleston, knight.

He held no lands etc. in the county but he occupied without right the under-mentioned third part, which John Molyns, deceased, formerly held by knight’s service of the heir of Giles Daubeney, a minor in the king’s wardship. Thomas de Crauthorn and Joan his wife granted the said lands to the said John Molyns and Alice his wife for the life of the said Joan, and John de Lovenay, son and heir of Walter de Lovenay, who then had an estate in fee simple in the same lands, by his writing dated Monday after the Nativity of St John the Baptist, 24 Edward III, granted all his right in the same, by the name of a messuage, 30a. land and 5a. meadow in Drayton and 2 messuages and 30a. land and meadow in Southpederton to the said John Molyns and Alice and the heirs of John. Afterwards the said Joan, in her widowhood, granted 4 messuages, a carucate and 80a. land, 16a. meadow, 10a. pasture, 4a. heath and 40s. rent in Little Lopen and Southpederton to the said John Molyns and Alice for the life of the same Joan and then, by the name of Joan, who was the wife of Thomas Crauthorn, daughter and heir of John de Stafford, who then had an estate in fee simple in the premises, by her writing dated Monday before St Nicholas, 34 Edward III, released her right in all her lands in Little Lopen and Southpederton to the said John Molyns and Alice and the heirs of John. The said John Molyns survived the said Alice and died seised of the said lands in Drayton, Southpederton and Little Lopen, Nicholas his son and heir being then a minor in the king’s wardship. The custody of the lands during the said heir’s minority belongs to Eleanor, who was the wife of the said Giles, because the fees of the said lands were assigned to her in dower long before the death of the said John Molyns.

He held no lands etc. in the county of the king in chief on the day of his death; but Henry Grene, knight, held of him on that day, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, the under-mentioned manors of Wolston and Wavynden with the advowson of the church of Wolston, which manors were given to the said Henry and the heirs of his body by Henry Grene, knight, father of the said Henry, with reversion to the right heirs of the said Henry the father. The said service, with the said reversion, descended to Thomas as son and heir of Henry the father, and he died seised of them in his demesne as of fee.
The aforesaid Henry the son and Maud his wife held of the said Thomas on the day of his death, by service of a rose yearly, the under-mentioned manor of Emberton, which Henry the father gave to the said Henry the son and Maud and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to himself and his heirs. The said service, with the reversion, descended to Thomas as above, and he died seised of them in his demesne as of fee.
The said Thomas, long before his death, gave the under-mentioned manor of Heyberne and advowson of the church of Wavynden, together with other lands etc. of his in the counties of Northampton, Leicester and Buckingham, to William Thirnyng, Richard Bollessore, parson of the church of Norton Davy, Thomas Mareschall, parson of the church of Stokebruere, William de Seyntgermeyn and Thomas Haweton, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns. DEVON. Inq. taken at Nyweton Busschel, Friday after the Conception, 15 Richard II.
Warepark. He held a tenement and a close, so called, containing 2 1/2a., in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief. John Buysshel, late lord of the manor of Teyngwik, held that manor of the king in chief by service of a pair of gilt spurs, price 40d., yearly, and enfeoffed Bartholomew of the tenement and close, to hold to him and his heirs, without the king’s licence. What estate the said John had in the tenement and close while he lived the jurors know not. On account of the said feoffment the tenement and close were seized into the king’s hand, and Bartholomew acquired them from the king, to hold to him and his heirs. Before the feoffment they used to render 2s. 7d. yearly to the lord of the manor aforesaid.
Bartholomew died on Sunday before the Nativity of St Mary, 15 Richard II. John Holebym, his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne castle, Saturday the feast of St Bartholomew, 16 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned town, manor and parts of towns.
Caldton. The town so called, in Ridesdale, held of Gilbert Umframvill, son and heir of Thomas Umframvyll, knight, a minor in the king’s wardship, by homage and fealty, and by service of rendering 4d. yearly for ward of the castle of Hirbotill. The town is worth 10s. yearly and no more, because of destruction by the Scots.
Aldensheles. A manor so called, in Ridesdale, held of the heir aforesaid by homage and fealty and service as above.
Therynham. A moiety of the town, held of the heir aforesaid by homage and fealty, other services not known. It is worth 26s. 8d. yearly and no more, because of the destruction aforesaid.
Toggesden. A fourth part of the town, held of John Fox and Maud his wife, services not known. It is worth 4 marks yearly and no more, because of the destruction aforesaid.
He died on Friday after All Saints last. Robert his son, aged 11 years on the feast of St Andrew last, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 28 November, 15 Richard II.
Long before his death he purchased from Alice late the wife of Henry Chamberleyn the under-mentioned messuage and land, which were seized into the king’s hands because John de Essheton, who held them of the king in chief by knight’s service, alienated them in fee to the said Alice without the king’s licence, and they are still in the king’s hand.
He held the remaining under-mentioned lands in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death.
Thornton in Pykerynglyth. A messuage and a bovate and 4a. land, [held of the king in chief by knight’s service]; and divers lands etc. worth 10l. yearly, held of John duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
He died on Easter Day, 9 Richard II. Nicholas de Hastynges, his son, aged 33 years and more, is his heir.
Since his death the said Nicholas has occupied the lands etc. held of the duke of Lancaster, and has taken the issues and profits thereof by right of inheritance.
