SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Thursday before St. Hilary, 14 Richard II.
He held no lands &c. in the county or elsewhere in the escheator’s bailiwick on the day of his death; because with the king’s licence he enfeoffed by his writing John Griffitz, knight, William Hugeford, John Bureley, William Godman, clerk, Philip Jeykyn, clerk, and Edmund de Lodelowe, clerk, of the under-mentioned 8 messuages and 3 carucates of land in Hodenet, Pepelowe and Hayford, to hold to them and their heirs, and by another writing enfeoffed John Griffitz, knight, William Preyers, William Hugeford, Robert Lodelowe, William Godman, clerk, Roger Pertrich, Philip Rodynton and John Bureley of all the remaining under-mentioned manors, lands and advowsons &c. (except the under-mentioned manor of Norton and the lands &c. mentioned therewith), to hold to them and their heirs, and by a third writing enfeoffed William Godman, rector of the church of Northbourch, Roger Pertrich and John Bureley of the under-mentioned manor of Norton and the lands &c. mentioned therewith, to hold to them and their heirs. All three sets of feoffees continued their estates in their several lands &c. and received the profits thereof to their own use until the death of the said Richard, and still receive the said profits.
Hodenet, Pepelowe and Hayford. 8 messuages and 3 carucates of land, held of the king in chief.
Roulton, Elwardyn, Westbury, Whelbache, Stokesay, Haulgton Hulle and Dounton. The manors, with common of pasture in the manor of Sibton.
Moston, Espley, Preston, Horton, Lawley, Coton, Schrewesbury, Wystanstowe, Streford, Coldeweston, Duddelbury, Corfton, Sparcheford, Overheyton, Pademour, Pole, Lodelowe, Stauntonlacy, Felton, Stevyton, Dodmor, Wystey, Auldon, Grutte, Asshe, Tilshope and Shir’. All the said Richard’s lands, rents, reversions, fees and services in those towns, with the advowsons of the churches of Wystantsowe and Grute, and of portions of the prebends of Westbury.
Hodenet, Pepelowe and Hayford. All the said Richard’s lands, rents, services, franchises and liberties in those towns (except the above-mentioned 8 messuages and 3 carucates of land).
Norton. The manor, and all the said Richard’s lands &c. in the towns and fields of Bache and Duddulbury together with common of pasture within the fee of Corfam.
None of the above, except the 8 messuages &c. in Hodenet &c., are held of the king in chief. They are held of divers other lords, services not known.
The said Richard died on Monday after the Conception last. John his brother, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

Writ after the death of the said John, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship. 28 April, 14 Richard II.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Byre, 4 June, 14 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned lands in Westport, Holnemede and Wergrede on the day of his death.
The under-mentioned tenements in Estburton, Warham and Estmour are held for life, by his demise, by the tenants named, with remainders as stated.
Westport. 2 a. land, held of the heir aforesaid by knight’s service.
Holnemede. 1 a. meadow, similarly held.
Wergrede. 1 1/2 a. land, held of John Glamvyle by knight’s service.
Estburton. A tenement held for life by Hugh Fysshe, with remainder to Alice wife of William Paneter [and her heirs]; and a tenement held for life by John Hudde, with remainder to the same Alice and her heirs.
Warham. A close in the borough held for life by John Ywayn, with remainder to John his (sc. John Lomer’s) younger son, and the heirs of his body, and in default of such heirs to Avice wife of Robert Calch and Alice wife of William Paneter and their heirs; 2 a. meadow held for life by John Page, with successive remainders as last above; 2 a. meadow held for life by John Hardi, with remainder to the said Avice and Alice and their heirs; 1 a. meadow held for life by Alice Barettes and a tenement and 3 a. meadow held for life by Edward Maundeward, with remainder to John his (sc. John Lomer’s) elder son, and the heirs of his body, and after his death (sic) to the aforesaid Avice and Alice and their heirs; and a tenement in the borough held for life by Thomas Powe, with remainder to Alice wife of William Paneter and her heirs.
Estmour. 1/2 a. meadow, held for life by Alice daughter of Henry Balhog, with reversion to Alice wife of William Paneter and her heirs.
The said John Lomer died on Wednesday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 14 Richard II. (Heir not given.)

Writ to the escheator, with reference to the above inquisition, to enquire what estate the said John Lomer had in the above lands &c. in Westport, Holnemede and Wergrede, of whom they are held, what the 1 1/2 a. in Wergrede consist of, and who is next heir of the said John, and of what age. 16 June, 14 Richard II.

The said John died seised in his demesne as of fee of the lands &c. in Westport and Holnemed, and they are held as stated in the above inquisition. The 1 1/2 a. in Wergred are arable land. The lands &c. in Estburton mentioned in the same inquisition are held of Joan Neoborch, as of her manor of Wyneford, by knight’s service. John Boueknoll, aged 30 years and more, is next heir of the said John, to wit, son of Margery sister of John Lomere, his father.

DEVON. Inq. (indented) taken at Colmpton, Thursday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 15 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned fees and parts of fees in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Yalumptorre, Cadekesbear and Membery and rent in Poslynch jointly with Joan his wife in fee tail.
He held the under-mentioned rent in Bradworth in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Langgaforde, and long before his death granted it by deed to John Elysaundre for life, at a rent of 9l. yearly during his own lifetime, and after his death by a rent of a red rose yearly at Midsummer. The said John is still living and in occupation of the manor by virtue of that grant.
Tetteborne. Half a knight’s fee.
Dodyngton Abbot, Uppecote and Rokebear Baudyn. One knight’s fee.
Greneslade. Half a knight’s fee.
Nywelond Brok. A fourth part of a knight’s fee.

He died on Sunday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. William de Langgaforde, knight, aged 25 years and more, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Southampton, Thursday, 27 July, 15 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Chale in joint feoffment with Joan his wife, who is still living.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Halewell as of the right and inheritance of the said Joan.
Chale, Isle of Wight. The manor and advowson, held of William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, as of the castle of Caresbrok, services not known.
Halewell. The manor, tenure not known.
He died on Thursday, 8 June last. Heir as above, aged 23 years and more.

BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Redyng, Saturday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 15 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Bradfeld.
He was seised in his demesne as of free tenement for life of the under-mentioned manor of La Beche; and also held for life the under-mentioned manors of Assheden, Bottenamsted and Compton. After his death these four manors are to remain to William Langford, knight, and Anne daughter of John de Beverle, both still living, for life, by a fine levied in the king’s court, and after their death to the right heirs of the said Thomas.
He held in joint feoffment with Joan his wife, who is still living, the under-mentioned manors of Asschamstede, Aldeworth and Benfeld, and the under-mentioned lands &c. in Aldeworth and Asshamstede and lands &c. called ‘Tybney’.
Bradfeld. The manor, and the advowson of the church thereof, held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.

He died on Sunday the eve of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 14 Richard II. Isabel, aged 30 years and more, and Margaret, aged 28 years and more, are his sisters and heirs.

Writ to the escheator to enquire who has occupied the under-mentioned messuage &c. since the death of James Botiller, late earl of Ormond, and on what day the said earl died and who is his next heir; as it was found by an inquisition taken before John Radeston, late escheator, that Stephen Marreys, knight, held a messuage and a carucate of land in Exton in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight’s service, and that the said earl, of full age, was his kinsman and heir, and afterwards the earl died before suing livery of the premises out of the king’s hand. 23 November, 14 Richard II.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Pensford, 4 January, 14 Richard II.
Robert Kyngman, of the office of the pantry of the king’s household, has occupied the keeping of the said messuage and carucate, and still occupies it, by pretext of a commitment made to him of 24s. yearly rent in Exton for the said 24s. to be rendered yearly at the Exchequer; and he has taken the issues and profits thereof ever since the death of the said earl, and still takes them. The earl died on Saturday the feast of St. Luke, 6 Richard II. James Boteler, earl of Ormond, aged 26 years and more, is his son and heir.

He held the under-mentioned manor and messuage in fee tail by gift and grant of Fulk Mounpynson, clerk, William Pette, clerk, John parson of the church of Lucham and John Cook of Lesyate made to him and Sibyl his wife, now deceased, and the heirs of their bodies.
Morle. The manor, held of Thomas de Morle, knight, by knight’s service.
Bishop’s Lenn. A messuage, held of the bishop of Norwich, service not known.
He died on 11 July last. Robert his son, aged 27 years and more, is his heir.

Writ of mandamus, 20 February, 14 Richard II
CALAIS. Inq. taken at Calais, 13 April, 14 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned tenement &c. in her demesne as of fee by right of inheritance after the death of Walter Mauny, her father, who was an alien born outside the king’s allegiance, to wit, in the land of Henaud.
Calais. A tenement and a vacant plot in the street called ‘Lanternstrete’, held of the king by service of keeping one watch for the safe-guarding of the town. The vacant plot lies between shops sometime of William de Skampton on the south and a tenement of Philip de la Vache, knight, on the north.
She died without heir of her body. Date of death and heir not known.
Thomas Hawkar and Richard Aswell occupied the premises while she lived by demise of her attorneys, and still occupy them as farmers. Since Anne’s death Margaret countess of Norfolk has taken the profits of the premises, title not known.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Toucestre, Wednesday the feast of St. Bartholomew, 14 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor in fee tail by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the octave of Trinity, 7 Richard II, and afterwards granted and recorded in the octave of Michaelmas, 8 Richard II, between William de la Pole son of Michael de la Pole, knight, querent, and Michael de la Pole, knight, deforciant, whereby the said Michael granted for himself and his heirs that the said William, who then held the manor for life by his grant, should hold the manor to himself and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to Richard de la Pole, son of the said Michael, and the heirs male of his body.
Grafton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died without heir of his body on 29 July last. Richard de la Pole, son of the said Michael, aged 11 years and more, is next heir by virtue of the above fine.

He held the under-mentioned manor of Hempston Arundell and lands &c. in Yoncomb, Shefeheghes and Oterton in fee tail by gift of Edmund Balrich and Peter White, clerks, to him and Maud sometime his wife and the heirs begotten between them, with remainder to his right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Pynnow by the courtesy of England after the death of the said Maud, of the inheritance of the under-mentioned Elizabeth and Cecily, her daughters.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Upotery, Ronerigge and Fayrook as of the right of Katharine his wife, late the wife of Edmund Cheyny, knight. She is still living.

Joan late the wife of William de Straulay, knight, his father, held in dower, by his endowment, the under-mentioned third part of the manor of Haselbache, the under-mentioned messuage &c. in Alastre, a third part of the under-mentioned park and lawn of Repyndon, and a third part of the under-mentioned watermill in Burgh.
Margaret late the wife of Philip de Strauley, his brother, holds in dower, of his inheritance, two-thirds of the said watermill and two-thirds of the said park and lawn.

Burgh in ‘le Peek’. A watermill, held of the king in chief by serjeanty, to wit, by providing a man to bear a heroner (falconem heronarium) in the king’s presence every year during the season, when he shall be warned on the king’s behalf to do so, the bearer receiving from the king two robes and bouche de court yearly and 7 1/2d. daily.
He died on Monday before the Annunciation, 14 Richard II. John his son, aged 11 years on Christmas Day last, is his heir.

She died seised in her demesne and in service as of fee of the under-mentioned manor &c., except a third part thereof which Alice late the wife of William Spygournell, her brother, holds for life in dower by endowment of the said William. The reversion of the said third part after the death of the said Alice belongs to the under-mentioned Amy.
Le Hyde. A wasted manor so called, in Barworth (hamlet of Stoodham), and 369 a. arable, 10 a. pasture, 3 a. meadow, 11 a. wood and 60s. rent in the county of Hertford, held of the king by service of two suits to the sheriff’s tourn held at Segham Assh twice a year. The premises are worth 6l. 4s. yearly, and also a casual profit of 50 cartloads of wood in Stoodham Charlewode whenever it is completely felled.
She died on Tuesday after St. Laurence, 14 Richard II. Amy (Amia) wife of John Kyrkham, aged 19 years and more, is her daughter and heir.

A certain Alan Tregene was seised of certain lands &c. in Tregene and Chywarmenyth worth 6s. 8d. yearly, and died. He left issue a son and heir John Aleyn, who has been a mere fool and idiot since birth; and the said lands ought to pertain to the king by reason of the said idiocy. John Rosmeryn is John Aleyn’s next heir to the lands in Tregene. Who is next heir to the lands in Chywarmenyth the jurors know not. John Aleyn is still living.

He was also seised in his demesne as of fee tail, to him and the heirs male of his body, of the under-mentioned two-thirds of the manor and town of Shyrmoundene and the lands &c. mentioned therewith.
He was also seised in his demesne as of fee tail, to him and the heirs male of his body, of the under-mentioned reversion of a third part of the manor and town of Shyrmoundene and the lands &c. mentioned therewith.

The premises are worth 43s. 4d. yearly and no more because of the destruction and burnings done by the Scots.
Shyrmoundene. The reversion of a third part of the manor and town, of a third part of the park of Helme, of 3 husbandlands and 2 cottages in Alewenton, and of a third part of the free service of all the free tenants in Alewenton, Chenhill (sic) &c., as above, which Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, and Maud his wife hold in dower as above. The premises are held of the said Henry de Percy by service of a rent of a third part of 4 marks yearly.
Westwhelpyngton. A rent of 43s. 4d. yearly, held freely of Henry de Percy and Maud his wife, as of the barony of Ovyngeham.
Inghowe. A tenement and a carucate of land, held of the said Henry and Maud in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.

He held two-thirds of the under-mentioned manor and ferry, together with the reversion of the third part of the same which Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, and Maud his wife, late the wife of Gilbert Umframvill, late earl of Angus, hold for term of the life of the said Maud as her dower after the death of the said Gilbert, in fee tail, to wit, to him and the heirs male of his body, in consequence of a grant of the said manor and ferry which the said Gilbert lately made by charter to his brother Thomas Umframvill, father of Thomas named in the writ, for life, to hold of the chief lords of that fee by the services due and accustomed, and also by rendering 10s. yearly to Robert Umframvill, son of the said Thomas the father, and the heirs male of his body, with remainder after the death of the said Thomas the father to Thomas named in the writ and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the chief lords of that fee by the services due and accustomed, and also by rendering 20l. yearly to the said Robert and the heirs male of his body, and with further remainders to the said Robert and the heirs male of his body and to the said Gilbert and his heirs.
Hesill. The manor, and the ferry across the water of Humbre with all the profits belonging thereto, held of Thomas de Holand, earl of Kent, by service of rendering 2s. 3d. yearly to the said earl and his heirs, lords of the manor of Kyrkebymorisheved.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Stratford on Avene, Thursday before St. Barnabas, 14 Richard II.
He held no lands &c. in the county in demesne or in service on the day of his death, because long before his death, by licence of Edward III, he enfeoffed by charter Henry Caytewayte, parson of the church of Quenton, and Hugh Norreys, chaplain, of the under-mentioned manor of Mulcote, and all the tenants of the manor attorned to them in his lifetime. The said feoffees continued their estate in the manor until by virtue of the licence aforesaid they re-enfeoffed him thereof, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to William de Beauchamp, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Lewis de Clyfford, knight, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said John. After the death of John the king caused the manor to be seized into his hands, for what cause or by what title the jurors know not.
Mulcote. The manor, held of the king by service of petty serjeanty, to wit, by rendering a sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly.
He died on 31 May last without heir of his body, so that the manor ought now to remain to the said William Beauchamp and the heirs male of his body. John Langelee, esquire, aged 50 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said John.

Writ to the escheator, to enquire touching a report that Roger le Walssh, who held of Edward III in chief, during his lifetime granted the manor of Stokke to William Latimer for life at a rent of 10 marks yearly, and that the said rent has been concealed and withdrawn from the king since the death of the said Roger, whose heir was a minor. 15 November, 14 Richard II.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Warham by the escheator, both by virtue of the king’s writ and virtute officii, 23 January, 14 Richard II.
John Walissh, son and heir of Roger Walssh, held the under-mentioned manor of Langeton in Purbyk and salt pans in Middelbere in his demesne as of fee. Henry Yevele, mason, by grant of Edward III, had the manor and salt pans, together with the marriage of the heir, from the time of John’s death until the lawful age of his heir.
The said John son of Roger held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Stokke Coylard in his demesne as of fee tail in consequence of a gift thereof made by Ralph son of William Stokke to Ingram le Walssh and Hawise his wife, and the heirs of their bodies. John son of Roger was heir of the said Ingram and Hawise, to wit, son of Roger son of John their son. The said Roger demised the manor (but not the advowson) to William Latimer and Margaret his wife for life at a rent of 10 marks yearly. William and Margaret occupied the manor all their life, Margaret dying 5 years ago and William on Friday after the Purification, 13 Richard II. For the last 10 years William did not pay the said rent to anyone. Before the said 10 years and after the death of John son of Roger, John Fylol had the rent; and on the death of the said William he entered into the manor, and has taken the issues and profits thereof ever since, by what title the jurors know not. The rent pertains to the king by reason of the minority of the under-mentioned heir, and has hitherto been concealed and withdrawn.
The said John son of Roger held the under-mentioned manor of Estchikerell in his demesne as of fee. Since his death John Fyloll and Margaret his wife, Philip Soydon and Henry Frere, clerk, have occupied the manor and taken the issues and profits thereof, by what title and in what way the jurors know not.
Langeton in Purbyk. The manor, with 2 salt pans (salinis) in Middelbere, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Stokke Coylard. The manor and the advowson of the church, held of John Arundel, knight, as of his manor of Lychet Mautravers, by knight’s service.
Estchikerell. The manor, held of John Woth by service of a pair of spurs or 12d.
He died on Friday after SS. Simon and Jude, 49 Edward III. Joan his daughter, now aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

1047. Robert Brewys, knight
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Hertpol, Friday after Holy Trinity, 14 Richard II.
The said Robert was seised in his demesne as of fee and of right of the under-mentioned manor, and gave it to John Fitz Marmeduc and Isabel his wife for life, with successive remainders to Richard Fitz Marmeduc and the heirs of his body and to himself (the said Robert) and his heirs. He died, and after his death Robert Brewys, his son and heir, adhered to the king of Scotland and the Scots, the king’s enemies, as a traitor and an enemy to Edward I. Richard Fitz Marmeduc survived John Fitz Marmeduc and his said wife, and died without heir of his body.
