	Writ of Devenerunt, Wodestok, 8 August, 6 Richard II
HERTFORD.	Inq. taken at Sabrichesworthe, Thursday before St. Matthew, 6 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned manor came to the hands of Edward III by the death of William de Say, knight, and by reason of the minority of the said John, and is still in the king’s hand. Sabrichesworthe. The manor of Sayes, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The said John died on 27 July last. Elizabeth, his sister, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.

KENT.	Inq. taken at Mallyng, Wednesday after St. Laurence, 6 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned manors, held by the said John son of William in fee, came to the hands of Edward III as above, and are still in the king’s hand. Birlyng, Burgham, Westgrenewich and Codeham. The manors, held of the king in chief, homages not known. Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 16 years on the feast of St. Matthias last.

	The under-mentioned manors of Strete and Buksted and lands etc. in Wogham, Hotlegh and Hammes, held by the said John son of William in his demesne as of fee, came to the hands of Edward III as above, and are still in the king’s hand. Strete. The manor, held of Richard, earl of Arundel, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Buksted. The manor, held of Sir John Waleys, knight, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by rendering 33s. 8 3/4d. yearly to the archbishop of Canterbury at his manor of Suthmallyngg. Wogham and Hotlegh. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of John de Say, as of his manor of Hammes, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Hammes. A virgate of land in the parish, held of the said John de Say, as of the manor aforesaid, services not known. Heir as last above. The under-mentioned manor of Hammes, held by the said John son of William in his demesne as of fee, was given by Thomas de Heth, formerly parson of the church of Retherfeld, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to Geoffrey de Say, knight, grandfather of the said John son of William, and Maud his wife, and the heirs male of their bodies. John de Say, son of the said Geoffrey and Maud, aged 30 years and more, is uncle of the said John son of William and next heir to the manor by virtue of the above fine. Hammes. The manor, held of the earl of Arundel by service of one knight’s fee. Edward III granted the custody of the above manors, lands etc. to William Latymer, knight, until the lawful age of the said John son of William, together with his marriage, by letters patent dated 7 August, 49 Edward III. Date of death as above.
	Writ to the treasurer and chamberlains to send into the Chancery a transcript of the fine referred to in the last inquisition. 5 October, 6 Richard II.
	Transcript of a fine made in the king’s court at Westminster on the morrow of the Ascension, 15 Edward III, whereby the manor of Hammes was settled on Geoffrey de Say, knight, and Maud his wife, and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to Geoffrey’s right heirs.

	He held no lands etc. in the county. He died on Thursday before All Saints last. Katharine his daughter, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.

850.	Thomas de Sheffeld, knight
	Writ: 6 June, 6 Richard II
YORK.	Inq. taken at Pokelyngton, 25 June, 7 Richard II.
	He died seised of the under-mentioned moiety in fee tail, as appears by a fine shown to the jurors. A certain Thomas de Sheffeld and Agnes, his wife, were seised thereof in right of Agnes, and by the above-mentioned fine acknowledged it to be the right of Roger de la More and William Savage, who thereupon surrendered it to them for life, with successive remainders in tail male to Thomas, John and William, their sons, and with remainder over to the right heirs of Agnes. Thomas the son died in the lifetime of his parents without heir male of his body. Afterwards, Thomas the father and Agnes died, and John their son entered into the premises and had issue a son Thomas, who entered after his father’s death and died without heir male of his body. Immediately after the death of the last-named Thomas, now deceased, William de Sheffeld, brother of the aforesaid John, entered into the premises, claiming them by virtue of the fine and remainder aforesaid. Baynton. A moiety of the manor, held of the earl of Nottingham, as of the fee of Moubray, service not known. The deceased died on Tuesday after Holy Trinity last. Katharine, his daughter, aged 7 years and more, is his heir. Transcript of a fine made in the king’s court at York in the quinzaine of St. John the Baptist, 2 Edward III, and granted and recorded at Westminster in three weeks of Easter, 5 Edward III, touching moieties of the manors of Baynton, co. York, and Biker in Holand, co. Lincoln, whereby Roger de la More and William Savage settled two-thirds of the said moieties, and the reversion of a third part thereof expectant on the demise of Maud late the wife of Brian son of Alan who held it in dower, on Thomas de Sheffeld and Agnes, his wife, for life, with remainders as in the above inquisition.

	He held the under-mentioned manor and cottage etc. in his demesne as of fee. Tydmerssh. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Walyngford, by service of half a knight’s fee. Pangebourn. A cottage and a watermill, held of the abbot of Redyng by service of 20s. yearly; and a cottage, held of Hugh de Berwyk by service of 12d. yearly. He died on 5 August, 6 Richard II. Nicholas Tydmerssh, his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

853.	Thomas Trot of Freton, co. Norfolk
	Writ of Mandamus, 9 January, 6 Richard II
KENT.	Inq. taken at Eltham, 5 March, 6 Richard II.
	He is said to have held the under-mentioned lands etc. in right of Agnes, his wife, deceased, formerly the wife of Nicholas Halford. Agnes survived him and received the issues of the said lands etc. after his death, as of her own right. Cobeham. Lands etc. there and elsewhere near Rochester, held of divers lords according to the custom of ‘gavelkyndes,’ but of which lords and by what services the jurors know not. He died without heir of himself after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary in the month of September, 29 Edward III, and was buried in the chancel of the church of Eltham. At the time of his death he was the king’s officer and marshal and harbinger. He never had any issue of his body, so far as the jurors can ascertain. At the time of his death he said that Christina daughter of John Trot of Freton, his sister, then aged 30 years and more, was his heir.

KENT.	Inq. (indented) taken at Rochester, Monday the eve of St. Matthias, 6 Richard II.
	Cobeham, Lodesdone and Notestede by Rochester. A messuage and 60 a. land and pasture, held in right of Agnes his wife, deceased, formerly the wife of Nicholas de Halford, to them and the heirs of the said Agnes, by gift and feoffment of Michael Campenade, father of the said Agnes. Cobeham. He acquired a toft and 1 r. land there jointly for himself and the said Agnes and the heirs of the survivor of them; and this was done, as the jurors say, because he never had a son or daughter begotten of his body, so far as the jurors can ascertain. All the premises are of the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes’; and 30 a. are held of the princess, as of her manor of Derteford, 9 a. in Notestede are held of William Mokkyng, as of his manor of Notestede, 8 a. in Lodesdone are held of the earl of Pembroke, and the messuage, the toft and the residue of the lands are held of the bishop of Rochester, as of his manor of Cobehambery, by fealty and suit of court every three weeks, and by divers other services according to the custom of ‘gavelkyndes’ of which the jurors are ignorant. Date of death, at Eltham, as above. Christina daughter of John Trot of Freton, where Thomas is said to have been born, was his sister and heir, and was 30 years of age and more at the time of his death. After his death the said Agnes had possession of the premises and received the issues thereof until she sold them to divers persons, names unknown at present.

MIDDLESEX.	Inq. (indented) taken at Braynford, Friday before St. Gregory the Pope, 6 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned third part as the dower of Agnes, his wife, who survived him, by endowment of Nicholas Halford, formerly her husband, the reversion thereof belonging to the right heirs of Nicholas. Netherhalford. A third part of a messuage and 30 a. land, held of the abbot of Westminster, as of his manor of Halford, by fealty and suit of court every three weeks, and by rents and other services unknown. He died at Eltham about Michaelmas, 29 Edward III, without any issue of his body; and this the jurors know well because the said Agnes, when he married her, was of a great age, and he never had another wife; and he himself declared by his own mouth that he never had son or daughter, for which reason he gave to John Cokefeld, then his clerk, the reversion of certain lands etc. in Dorkyng, co. Surrey, after the death of Robert Weston, who survived him, subject to certain conditions. Heir as above.

NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Longstratton by Freton, Tuesday in Easter week, 6 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. (estate not specified). Freton. A messuage, 30 a. land and 1 a. meadow, whereof 20 a. land and 1 a. meadow are held of the lord Fywater, as of his manor of Hemnale, and 10a. land are held of Thomas Goodwyn of Freton. Longstratton by Freton. A messuage and 30 a. land, held of Robert de Welham, as of his manor of Longstratton by Freton, services not known. Pulham. A messuage and 60 a. land, held of the bishop of Ely, as of his manor of Pulham, services not known. He died at the king’s manor of Eltham about the month of September, 29 Edward III. At the time of his death, and long before, he was the king’s officer and marshal and harbinger. Heir as above, aged 40 years and more at the time of his death. After his death all the premises descended by hereditary right to Christina, his sister and heir, because he never had any issue of his body, nor any wife except Agnes relict of Nicholas de Halforth, who survived him and had her dower of the premises after his death. The said Christina had possession of the premises for a time, and received the issues, and afterwards alienated them to divers persons, names unknown, who are still in possession and receive the issues.

SURREY.	Inq. (indented) taken at Dorkyngg, Thursday before Whitsun, 6 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in reversion after the death of Robert Weston, who survived him. Dorkyngg. A messuage and a moiety of a carucate of land, held of divers lords, but of whom and by what services the jurors know not. Date of death not known. John Trot, his son, born in wedlock, aged 40 years and more, is his heir. Since the death of Robert Weston Master Roger Freton, clerk, has occupied the premises and received the issues, title not known.

	He held no lands etc. in the county. Date of death not known. He married Alice Luggere in the church of Maghfeld, and John Trot, their son born in wedlock, aged 50 years and more, is his heir.

859.	Thomas de Thweng, or Thweyng
	Writ of Plura, 28 November, 6 Richard II
WESTMORELAND.	Inq. taken at Appelby, Monday after the Epiphany, 6 Richard II.
	He held no lands etc., fees or advowsons beyond those specified in the inquisitions heretofore taken (Vol. XIV, No. 58); but he held the under-mentioned services otherwise than is stated in the said inquisitions. Barton, Martyndale, Grisdale, Patrikdale, Bourdale and Fehousdale. The services of Ralph de Dacre, who held the said places of him by knight’s service and the service of rendering a sore sparrowhawk or 12d. at Midsummer, were held by him for life only, by grant of Marmaduke de Lumley, with reversion to the said Marmaduke and his heirs. And from Marmaduke the right to the reversion descended to Robert, his son and heir, and from Robert (who died without heir of his body) to Ralph, his brother and heir, who is now a minor in the king’s wardship. Thomas died on Trinity Sunday, 48 Edward III. He died without heir of his body. He had three sisters, Lucy, Margaret and Katharine. Lucy had issue Marmaduke de Lomley, who had issue Robert and the aforesaid Ralph, which latter will be 21 years of age on 9 April next. Margaret had issue Maud, who had issue John de Hothum, knight, who survives and is 30 years of age, and Isabel wife of William Pedwardyn, knight, who survives and is 15 years of age. Katharine had issue Elizabeth wife of William Botrieux, knight, who survives and is 21 years of age. So the said Ralph, John, Isabel and Elizabeth are kinsfolk and next heirs of Thomas.

	Writ in pursuance to Richard de Hoghton, the duke’s escheator in the county of Lancaster. Lancaster, 4 March in the seventh year of his regality.
LANCASTER.	Inq. taken at Lancaster, Wednesday in the fourth week of Lent, 6 Richard II.
	He died seised of the under-mentioned moiety of a knight’s fee. He held the under-mentioned parcel of land in his demesne as of fee. He held the under-mentioned advowsons for life, with reversion to the aforesaid Marmaduke and his heirs. Ellale, Scotford, Asshton, Stodagh, Thirnum, Ketilfeld, Fynchecroft, Scaligill, Clyffley, Baxtergill and Esshcogh. A moiety of a knight’s fee, held of him and his heirs by knight’s service by Richard le Molyneux, knight, Robert de Holand, Adam de Hoghton, knight, Ralph de Caterhall, William de Slene, William de Catherton, Henry de Balrig, William de Caton, William Jacson of Aldeclif, Robert son of William Diconson, Thomas Makerath, Margaret Jonesdoghtre, Robert de Haryngton, knight, Edmund Laurence, John de Fordenshagh, William son of William Swane and Thomas de Rigmayden. He and his heirs hold the said moiety of the duke in chief by service of ward of the castle of Lancaster, rendering 2s. 6d. yearly. He had it for life by demise of Marmaduke de Lumley, knight. Marmaduke had it in fee by gift and feoffment of the same Thomas de Thweyng by a deed shown to the jurors. Kerneford. A parcel of land called ‘Salterflat,’ held of the duke in chief by the aforesaid service. Warton. The advowson of the church. Conynghed. The advowson of the church of the priory. Both held of the duke in chief in form aforesaid and by the same service. He died about 8 years ago, day not known because he died in a foreign county. Ralph son of Marmaduke de Lumley, who will be of full age by Easter next, is his heir by virtue of the above feoffment. The jurors do not know who has occupied the premises and received the issues since his death, but they suppose the ministers of the duke or the king have; title not known.

YORK.	Inq. taken at Gisburgh in Clyveland, 8 January, 6 Richard II.
	The inquisition is torn and illegible in places. The findings appear to be identical with those of the inquisition taken on 20 September, 48 Edward III (Vol. XIV, No. 58).

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Friday after the Annunciation, 6 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned manor came to the king’s hand by the death of John Talbot, knight, and by reason of the minority of the said Richard, and is still in the king’s hand. Hoobregge. The manor, in the town of Wytham, held of Sir John Plays, knight, by service of one knight’s fee. Richard died on Sunday the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. John, his brother, aged 9 years and more, is his heir.

	The said Richard held the under-mentioned castle, manor and lordships in his demesne as of fee. Richards Castle. The castle and lordship (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of Boreford. The extent includes a market on the feast of St. Bartholomew. Rechesford. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Blethevagh in the march of Wales. The lordship (extent given), held of the king in chief. All the above came to the hands of Edward III as in the last inquisition, and are still in the king’s hand. Richard died on 13 September last. John Talbot, his brother, aged 8 years on 25 September last, is his heir.

	The said Richard held the under-mentioned hamlet and rents in his demesne as of fee. Wolferton. The hamlet (extent given), held as parcel of the lordship of Richards Castle. The extent includes a carucate of land called ‘Cleyhill,’ a pasture called ‘Zongwode,’ and a watermill called ‘Berwardismylne.’ Lentwardyn in the march of Wales, parcel of the same lordship. 40s. rent of assise of free tenants. Baggesore. 4s. rent of assise. All the above are held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of Borford, and came to the hands of Edward III as above. NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Geydyngton, Saturday before St. Clement, 6 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned 1 a. land in his demesne as of fee. He held the under-mentioned two-thirds of a manor in joint feoffment with Alice, his wife, who is still living, by demise of Henry Mulslo (sic), Robert de Melton, clerk, Henry de Geidyngton and John Mikelfeld, with the king’s licence (under the name of the manor of Wikle) and by a fine levied in the king’s court. The reversion of the third part of the manor expectant on the demise of Joan wife of William Whithoue, who holds it as her dower after the death of Mauger Vavasour, the deceased’s brother, belongs to the deceased and Alice, his wife, and their heirs. Wikle. 1 a. land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Wikle. Two-thirds of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. A parcel of the manor containing 1 r. wood is held of Nicholas Lovet by service of a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly. The manor is subject to a charge of 20s. yearly to John Carnell for life. William Vavasour died on 9 November last. Margaret, his daughter by the said Alice, aged 1 1/2 years and more, is his heir.

	She held the under-mentioned third part of the manor of Honyschaue in dower. She was dowered of the under-mentioned third part of the manors of Womberlegh etc. by John Beamound, Thomas de Wellyngton, William Brightlegh and John Poulet, who were enfeoffed of all the estate which John de Galmyngton, parson of the church of Lyteltoriton, and Roger Boys, parson of the church of Adheryngton, had for the life of the said feoffees. Honyschaue. A third part of the manor, held of the king, as of the duchy of Cornwall as of the manor of Bradenynche. Womberlegh, Beaufforde, Ridelcombe, Stokerivers, Langgelegh, Lomena and Gydisham. A third part of the manors. She died on 22 August, 6 Richard II.

WORCESTER.	Inq. taken at Worcester, Tuesday the feast of St. Augustine the Bishop, 6 Richard II.
	He held in his demesne as of fee the under-mentioned manor, which came to the king’s hand by the death of John Walsshe, his father, and by reason of the minority of the under-mentioned heir of Gilbert Talbot, and is still in the king’s hand. Sheldesleye Walsshe. The manor (extent given), held of the heir of Gilbert Talbot of Richardescastel, a minor in the king’s wardship, service not known. The extent includes a several pasture called ‘le Park.’ He died on Saturday before Palm Sunday, 6 Richard II. Thomas le Walsshe, brother of the said John le Walsshe, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

DEVON.	Inq. taken at Exeter, Tuesday before St. Denis, 6 Richard II.
	He died seised of the under-mentioned manor of Honischaue in his demesne as of fee. Honischaue. The manor, held of the king, as of the duchy of Cornwall as of the manor of Bradenynche, by service of a sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly. He did not die seised of any other lands etc. in the county, because John de Wellyngton, knight, his father, long before he died, granted the manors of Womberlegh, Beauforde, Rydelcombe, Stokerevers, Langelegh, Lomena and Gydysham, which are not held of the king, to John de Galmyngton, parson of the church of Lyteltoriton, and Roger Boys, parson of the church of Atheryngton, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns, for the term of the life of John Beamounde, knight, Thomas de Wellyngton, William Brithlegh and John Poulet, saving to the said John de Wellyngton, his heirs and assigns, the reversions of the said manors. After taking seisin, the said John de Galmyngton and Roger Boys granted all their estate in the manors to the said John, Thomas, William and John, of whom the two first-named are now dead, and the other two are still living. The said Ralph died on 10 August, 6 Richard II. John de Wellyngton, his brother, aged 8 years and more, is his heir.

CORNWALL.	Inq. taken at Canyngton, Saturday before St. Denis, 6 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned parcel of land and eighth part of a fee in his demesne as of fee. Fawyton. An eighth part of a knight’s fee, held of the king, as of the duchy of Cornwall as of the castle of Lanceston, by knight’s service. Trevilias. A parcel of land there, which manor (sic) is held of the king, as above, by service of 4s. yearly in socage. John de Wellyngton, knight, his father, long before he died gave the manor of Lanteglos by Fowy, which is not held of the king, and all his lands in Polruwan, to John de Galmyngton, etc., as in the last inquisition. Date of death and heir as last above.

GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Sobbury, 11 December, 6 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned part of a manor came to the king’s hands on the death of John de Wellyngton, knight, his father, and by reason of his minority. Frompton Cotell. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Ralph died on 16 August, 6 Richard II. Heir as above.

	Frompton Cotell. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. John Poulet, knight, has it of the king at farm. Colverden. A messuage, with divers parcels of land, meadow and pasture, held of the abbot of St. Peter, Gloucester, ……….. Sandhurst and Ablynton. Lands etc. held in reversion after the death of Thomas de Welyngton, who held them for life by grant of John de Welyngton [Ralph’s father]. Moreslade. GLOUCESTER.	Inq. (indented) taken at Chepyngesobbury, Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 7 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned manor and messuages etc. came to the king’s hand by the death of John de Wyllyngton, knight, and by reason of the minority of the said Ralph, his son and heir, who lately died while a minor on the king’s wardship, and are still in the king’s hand. Frompton Cotell. The manor, held of the king by knight’s service. John Poulet, knight, holds it of the king at farm by letters patent dated 7 March, 6 Richard II. Sandhurst. A messuage called ‘Wyllyngtonescourt,’ with divers parcels of land, meadow and pasture, pleas etc. of court, and 60s. rents of assise, tenure not known; a messuage and a virgate of land called ‘Moreslade,’ held of the abbot of St. Peter’s, Gloucester, as of the King’s Barton by Gloucester, by service of 28s. 4d. yearly; and a messuage with divers parcels of land, meadow and pasture called ‘Colverden,’ held of the same abbot, as of the same Barton, by service of 3s. 2d. yearly. Ablynton. A messuage, a carucate of land and 60s. rents of assise, held of the bishop of Worcester by service of 26s. 8d. yearly. The premises in Sandhurst and Ablynton were lately held by Thomas de Wyllyngton for life, by grant of the said John de Wyllyngton, his brother, with reversion to John and his heirs. The said Ralph died on 10 August, 6 Richard II. John de Wyllyngton, his brother, aged 9 years and more, is his heir.

	He died a minor in the king’s wardship seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors, lands etc. John de Welyngton granted the under-mentioned manor of Yate to John de Galmyngton, parson of the church of Litel[toriton], and Roger Boys, parson of the church of Atheryngton, to hold for the term of the life of John Beawmond, Thomas de Welyngton, William Brightlegh and John Paulet, knight, saving the reversion to the said John de Welyngton. After taking seisin the said John de Galmyngton and Roger Boys granted their estate in the manor to the said John Beawmond, Thomas, William and John Paulet. John Beawmond died and the other three granted their estate in the manor to Ralph de Welyngton. Frompton Cottell. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Culverdon. A messuage with divers parcels of land, meadow and pasture, held of the abbot of St. Peter, Gloucester, as of [the King’s Berton] by Gloucester, by service of 2s. yearly. Sandhurst. A messuage, garden, lands and meadows 60s. rent of assise and pleas and perquisites of courts, tenure unknown. Sandhurst. 	Writ to the escheator,—inasmuch as by an inquisition taken ex officio before John Reppynghale, late escheator, it was found that the said William held the manor of Crauden of the king, as of the honor of Peverel, by knight’s service, and other lands in Malketon, Wendey and Arnyngton of other lords, but the said inquisition gives no information as to his estate in the premises or his heir,—to enquire into those matters. 1 March, 6 Richard II.
