YORK.	Inq. taken at Rypon, 4 May, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor etc. in his demesne as of fee. He held no other lands etc. in the county besides those returned into Chancery by an inquisition lately taken after his death. Farneham. The manor, and lands etc. in Doketlofthous and Staveley, held of the castle of Knaresburgh by socage. Bychehill in York. Divers tenements thereon, held of the king by burgage. He died on Wednesday in the third week of Lent, 49 Edward III. John son and heir of John de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, aged 6 years and more, and William la Zowche, knight, aged 60 years and more, are his kinsmen and heirs. Since his death Robert de Roos of Ingmanthorp, knight, has occupied the premises and taken the issues and profits thereof, and is to answer to the king therefor. Memorandum that certain writs, inquisitions and evidences relating to certain lands etc. late of the said William, and to Thomas son of Robert de Roos, knight, remain in the Chancery files among the king’s writs of 3 Richard II.

	She held no lands etc. in the county. She died on Saturday after SS. Philip and James, 29 Edward III. Her next heir is Alice wife of John Preest of Wyvelesthorn, of full age and over, whose aunt (avuncule) she is.

SALOP.	Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, Saturday after St. Valentine, 4 Richard II.
	The said John, (as son and heir of Alan son of Alan de Charleton, knight, and Margery, his wife), held the under-mentioned manor of Hakercote in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body. The said Alan and Margery had it by gift and grant of John de Wyke, parson of the church of Great Catesden, and James de Morton, parson of the church of La Rode, made to them and the heirs of their bodies by a fine levied in the court of Edward III, with successive remainders to John, son of the aforesaid Alan knight, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of Margery. He held the remaining under-mentioned manors in his demesne as of fee. Hakercote. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of providing a man on foot with a bow and 3 arrows when the king goes to Wales in time of war, to stay with the king until he has discharged his arrows against the king’s enemies. Aston. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Arundel by service of a knight’s fee. Whithiford. A moiety of the manor, held of the same earl by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee; and the other moiety of the manor, held of the baron of Wemme by the like service. An extent of the whole manor is given. Appeleye by Welyngton. The manor (extent given), held of Nicholas Burnell by service of providing an armed man for 12 days riding with the said Nicholas in the king’s service when there is war in Wales. Kyneleye. A messuage, half a virgate of land and 1/2 a. meadow. Preston. A messuage and a nook (nocata) of land. Both the above he held of John de Lodlowe, knight, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Halghton and Tryllewardyn. A carucate of land, held of the lord of Ideshale, service not known. Aldenham. A virgate of land, held of the lord of Cressege, service not known. Welynton. 4 burgage tenements, 1/2 a. meadow and half a virgate of land, held of Nicholas Burnell by service of 10s. yearly. Wapeleshale. A messuage and half a virgate of land, held of the prior of Wombrugge by service of rendering 1 lb. pepper at Christmas. He died without heir of his body on Tuesday, Christmas day last. Thomas de Charleton, aged 30 years and more, son of the aforesaid Alan son of Alan and Margery, is his brother and is next heir.

	He held the under-mentioned manor of Long Ichynton and messuage etc. in Wolricheston in his demesne as of fee. He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Long Ichynton in joint feoffment with Isabel, his wife, who is still living, to him and her and his heirs and assigns, by gift and feoffment of John Huwet and Richard Botiller. He held the reversion of the under-mentioned tofts etc. in Burleye and Snyterfeld, which Joan Haumvill holds for life of his inheritance, with reversion to him and his heirs. Long Ichynton. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes meadows called ‘Sydenham,’ ‘Snowfordmede,’ ‘Asterhole,’ ‘Halweymede,’ ‘Marwelese,’ ‘Chirchemede,’ ‘Smytheshorn’ and ‘Mulnedich,’ a wood called ‘le Park,’ a rabbit-warren called ‘Park,’ and pleas etc. of court with a view of frankpledge there and in the hamlets of Arley and Sloleye. Long Ichynton. A messuage, a carucate of land and 40s. rent, held of his heirs by service of 1d. yearly. Wolricheston. A messuage and half a virgate of land, held of Robert Folkeshull, service not known. Burleye. A toft, a carucate of land and 20s. rent. Snyterfeld. A toft, a carucate of land and 2s. rent. The said tofts etc. are held of Thomas West, knight, services not known. He died on Monday after St. Bartholomew last. John, his son, aged 15 years at the Annunciation last, is his heir.

He died on Wednesday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist last. John, his son, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

333.	John Darcy, knight
	Writ of Mandamus, sicut alias, to John Devereux, captain, William de Ermyn, treasurer, and the mayor of Calais. 28 June, 4 Richard II.
CALAIS.	Inq. taken at Calais before the said John and William, and William de Suryne, mayor of Calais, Tuesday the eve of St. James, 4 Richard II.
	He held the following of Edward III in chief, to wit, an inn on the south side of the High Street (magno vico) of Calais, formerly held by Hugh del Capell and William del Capell and lying between houses formerly of Gilbert Daire and Hugh Foyard on the east and west respectively, and a garden formerly of the aforesaid Gilbert on the south; and a void plot on the east side of the street called ‘Hugh Foyard,’ formerly held by Michael del Court and lying between houses formerly of Arnold Bombel and Hugh del Capell on the east and west respectively. He had them of the king’s gift by conquest, and by service of two watches for the garrison of the said town. He held no lands of others than the king. After his death the premises were taken into the said king’s hands by reason of the minority of John, his son and heir, and Bartholomew Busshon, late serjeant-at-arms of Edward III, held them by a charter of Edward III under the seal of Calais dated 20 September in the seventeenth year of the said king’s reign of France, whereby the premises were demised to him until the full age of the said heir, rendering 11s. yearly of the payment of Calais and providing two watches for the garrison of the said town. Before the end of the said term, to wit, about October, 34 Edward III, the said inn was destroyed by fire; and so, on account of default of watches and other services due to the king, the inn and void plot were taken into the king’s hand and granted to Robert de Heillesdon by a charter under the seal of Calais dated 20 March, 46 Edward III, to hold to him and his heirs for ever, rendering to the king 33s. 4d. yearly and providing two watches as above. By virtue of the said grant Robert occupied the premises all his life, and since his death his heirs and assigns have occupied them. The said John Darcy, knight, died in England, date not known. He had two sons, to wit, John Darcy the elder and Philip Darcy the younger. John was his next heir, and died while a minor. Philip, who is still living, is his brother John’s next heir.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Horncastre, Tuesday the feast of St. Barnabas, 4 Richard II.
	He died seised of the under-mentioned manor and advowsons (except the advowson of Dalderby) in right of Margaret, his wife, who was daughter and heir of Thomas de Loddelowe, deceased, who was son and heir of Joan Marmioun, deceased, lady of the said manor. Margaret is 50 years of age and more. Scryvelby. The manor, and the advowsons of the churches of Scryvelby, Holtham, Rugton, Conyngesby and Wilkesby, which are parcel thereof, held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty, to wit, that whenever a king of England is crowned the lord of the manor for the time being, or some proper person in his name if he is incapable, shall on the day of the coronation come into the king’s presence well armed for war and on the king’s best horse save one to be chosen by him, and shall there cause proclamation to be made that, if anyone shall wish to say that the king has not a right to his realm of England or to his crown, he will be ready and forthwith prepared to maintain by his body the right of the king and his realm and the dignity of his crown against the said person and all others. Dalderby. The advowson of the church, held as in fee, purchased from John Solers. He died on 16 April, 4 Richard II. Thomas Dymmok, aged 30 years and more, is his son and heir.

	Writ: 16 February, 4 Richard II
RUTLAND.	Inq. taken at Oppyngham, Monday after St. Gregory, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned two-thirds of the manor of Esinden for life by demise of Edward, late lord le Despencer, his brother, the reversion belonging to Thomas, son and heir of the said Edward, a minor in the king’s wardship. The other third part of the manor is held in dower by Elizabeth late the wife of the said Edward by assignment of the deceased. Esinden. Two-thirds of the manor, which is in the county of Rutland with the exception of a wood, parcel thereof, which is in the county of Lincoln, (tenure not given). He died on 9 February, 4 Richard II. The aforesaid Thomas son of Edward, aged 7 years and more, is his kinsman and heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Basyngstoke, 4 March, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned two-thirds of a manor on the day of his death. Mapelderwell. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, (service not stated). The extent includes 3 quarters 6 bushels of wheat for church-scot. He died on 13 February, 4 Richard II. Heir as above.

	He held the under-mentioned hall etc. for life by gift and feoffment of Edward le Despencer, knight, his brother. Schellyngthorp. A hall with a carucate of land, held of the lord de Bello Monte, and not of the king in chief. Esenden. A wood pertaining to the manor, (which manor, except for the said wood, is in the county of Rutland), held of John, bishop of Lincoln. (Date of death not given). Heir as above. Memorandum (undated) of the appointment by Elizabeth late the wife of Edward le Despenser of John Walesby and John Aspilon as her attorneys to sue out of the king’s hands a third part of the above hall etc. and wood in co. Lincoln. Thomas Newenham received the attorneys.

BUCKINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Aylesbury, 26 March, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manors for life by demise of Edward le Despencer, his brother. Bokelond. The manor (extent given, including a court with a view of frankpledge), held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service. There is also at Agmondesham a rent of assise of 7l. 6s., parcel of the said manor, which is held of the earl of Hereford by service of 3s. 6d. yearly. Syncleburgh. The manor, held of Hugh, earl of Stafford, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Henry Hamwode, ‘esquier,’ ought to receive for life, by grant of the above-mentioned Edward le Despencer, 40s. yearly out of the manor of Bokelond and 17 marks yearly out of the manor of Syncleburgh. The said Thomas died on 12 February last. Heir as above, aged 9 years and more.

CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. taken at Fordham, Saturday after Ascension Day, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor jointly with Joan, his wife, who is still living, to wit, to them and their heirs and assigns. Fordham. The manor (extent given, including a leet), held of the king in chief by service of two-thirds of a knight’s fee. He died on 26 April last. Mary, Sibyl and Eleanor, his daughters by the said Joan, are his heirs and of full age.

LINCOLN.	Inq. [taken at Kyrkton in Lyndesey, the morrow of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 4 Richard II.
	Edward, prince of Wales, by licence of Edward III, granted the under-mentioned manor of Kyrkton to him and Joan, his wife], (fn. 1) for life and in survivorship, in consideration of good service rendered by him in the prince’s company in parts beyond seas, without any service being reserved. Joan, princess of Wales, holds the wapentakes of Aslakhow and Coryngham with the courts, rights and appurtenances thereof, which are parcels of the said manor, as her dower of the manor, and the reversion of the same pertains to the said lady Joan de Felton if she survives the princess. So the said Sir Thomas died seised of the said manor except the wapentakes. After the death of the princess and the said lady Joan the reversion of the manor with its appurtenances pertains to the king and his heirs. The king confirmed the life estate of Sir Thomas and the lady Joan by letters patent in the year aforesaid [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1377–1381, p. 600]. The said Thomas was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor of Aslakby, and by licence of Edward III granted it to John Leche, clerk, Hugh Fastolf and William de Rudham, clerk, their heirs and assigns; and they, by the like licence, granted it to him and Joan, his wife, and Sibyl, their daughter, for life, with remainder to William de Morle, knight, and his heirs. Kyrkton in Lyndesey. The manor, held of the king in chief by homage and fealty. Aslakby. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee, except a plot of land called ‘le Outegate’ within the site of the manor which is held of the lord de Bellomonte, as of the castle and manor of Folkyngham, by a rent of 2s. yearly, (and the said lord in turn holds it of the king by homage and fealty), and except 64 a. wood and 12 bovates of land, of which 10 bovates are held of the lord de Roos, lord of Belvoir, as of the castle of Belvoir, by knight’s service, to wit, by homage and fealty only, (and the said lord holds them of the king in chief by the same services), 2 bovates are held of Sir Walter de Petwarddyng by knight’s service, to wit, by homage and fealty only, (and Sir Walter holds them of the king in chief by the same services), 40 a. wood are held of the same Sir Walter together with the above 2 bovates, as one entire holding, by homage and fealty, (and Sir Walter holds them as above), and 24 a. wood are held of Simon de Burgh, as of the right of Joan, his wife, by a rent of 12d. yearly, (and Simon holds them in right of the said Joan of the lord de Bello Monte, as of his manor of Folkyngham, by the same services, and the said lord holds them of the king in chief by homage and fealty). [He died on Thursday after St. Mark, 4 Richard II. Mary, wife of Edmund Hemgrave, aged 25 years, and Sibyl de Morlay, aged 23 years, are his heirs].

NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Kenynghale, Monday in Whitsun week, 4 Richard II.
	He held the following manors jointly with Joan, his wife, who is still living, to them and their heirs and assigns. Banham. The manor, held as to 30 a. land of the earl of March by knight’s service, (and the earl in turn holds of the king in chief, services not known), and as to the residue of Margaret countess of Norfolk, as of her manor of Kenet, by knight’s service, (and the countess in turn holds of the king in chief, services not known). Greyis. The manor, held of the said countess, as of her manor of Kenet, by a quarter of a knight’s fee (and the countess in turn holds as above). Wylby. The manor, held of the inheritance of Roger Grey, knight, by knight’s service, (and Roger holds by knight’s service of the earl of Arundel, who in turn holds of the king in chief, services not known). Date of death as last above. Mary, Sibyl and Eleanor, aged respectively 24 years, 22 years and 20 years, are daughters and heirs of the said Thomas and Joan.

NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Rudhammarket, Wednesday in Whitsun week, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Lucham to him and the heirs male of his body. The reversion belongs to Roger Lestraunge, lord of Knokyn, by virtue of a gift which John Lestraunge, Roger’s ancestor, made to Robert de Felton and Maud, his wife, and the heirs male of their bodies, from whom the manor and advowson descended to John de Felton as their son and heir, and from John to Hamo de Felton as his son and heir, and from Hamo (who died without heir male of his body) to the said Thomas de Felton as his brother and heir. The said Roger Lestraunge is son and heir of Roger Lestraunge son and heir of John Lestraunge son and heir of the aforesaid John Lestraunge who gave the manor and advowson as aforesaid; and the reversion belongs to him because Thomas de Felton died without heir male of his body. The said Thomas held the remaining under-mentioned manors and advowsons in joint feoffment with Joan, his wife, who is still living. Great Ryburgh and Little Riburgh. The manors, with the advowson of the church of Great Ryburgh, held of the earl of Arundel, as of the honor of Castelacre, by knight’s service. Ingaldestorp and Dersyngham. The manors, with the advowson of the church of Ingaldesthorp, held of John de Cavendissh, as of his manor of Fakenham Aspes, by knight’s service. Lucham. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the earl of Arundel, as of the honor of Dunstavill, by knight’s service. Date of death as above. Mary, Sibyl and Eleanor, his daughters, aged as last above, are his heirs. The said Roger Lestraunge, now lord of Knokyn, is 60 years of age and more.

	He held the under-mentioned manor jointly with Joan, his wife, who is still living, to them and their heirs and assigns. Barwe. The manor, one moiety of which is held of the earl of March by knight’s service, (and the earl in turn holds of the king in chief, services not known), and the other moiety is held of the abbot of St. Edmunds by knight’s service, (and the abbot in turn holds of the king in chief, services not known). Date of death and heirs as above (first Norfolk inquisition).

CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. taken at Little Schelford, 29 January, 4 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Little Schelford jointly with John her, late husband, by gift and feoffment of John de Barneton, parson of the church of Little Schelford, lately made with the late king’s licence by a fine levied in the late king’s court to her and her said husband and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of her said husband. Her said husband died without heir of his body. She held the under-mentioned third parts of the manor of Caxton and messuage in West Wrattyng etc. for life by way of dower after the death of her said husband. The reversion of the said third parts after her death belongs to Agnes wife of John Brews, knight, by virtue of a gift lately made to the said John Frevill in pursuance of a licence granted by the late king for him to enfeoff John de Carleton and John Silverle of the said manor and messuage, and for them to re-enfeoff him thereof for life, with successive remainders to Richard, his son, now deceased, and the aforesaid Agnes, who is still living, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said John Frevill. The said Richard died without issue by Agnes. Little Schelford. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, one part of which manor, with the advowson, is held of the king in chief by service of three-fourths of a knight’s fee, and the residue of the earl of Richmond and the bishop of Ely, services not known. The extent includes a garden called ‘le Vynezerd.’ Caxton. A third part of the manor, which manor is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. West Wrattyng, Carleton and Balsham. A third part of a messuage, which messuage is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. She died on 21 January last. Robert Fryvill, aged 40 years and more, is brother and next heir of the said John Fryvill. The jurors do not know who is Ellen’s next heir.

YORK.	Inq. taken at Helmeslay, 20 February, 4 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned lands etc. came to the hands of Edward III by the death of the said Walter and by reason of the minority of the said John, his son and heir. Pokelay. Two-thirds of a waste messuage and of a carucate of waste land, lying next the common pasture and worth nothing by the year because not enclosed. Helmeslay. 17s. 10d. rent from all the lands etc. of all the bondmen of the lord de Roos of Hamelak. Since the death of Walter the said lord de Roos and Thomas Ughtred, knight, have taken the said rent, and they are to answer to the king therefor. The aforesaid lands etc. are held of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Helmeslay, by homage and fealty and service of a hundredth part of a knight’s fee. The said John died on 5 October, 42 Edward III, but the escheator was not aware of his death until the date of this inquisition. Agnes de Faucomberge, his sister, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

	He held the under-mentioned manor for life by grant of William de Bello Campo, knight, and Lewis de Clifford, knight, with remainder to Elizabeth, sometime his wife, who is still living, and after her death to the heirs of the bodies of himself and the said Elizabeth, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence. Tirley. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. The extent includes woods called [‘Swynord’] and ‘Rounhay.’ He died on Monday after the Nativity of the Blessed [Mary], 4 Richard II. Robert, his son and heir, is a minor aged 10 years [and more].

	He held the under-mentioned manors for life by grant of William de Bello Campo, knight, and Lewis de Clyfford, knight, by a fine levied in the king’s court on the morrow of Ascension Day, 2 Richard II, with remainder for life to Elizabeth, late his wife, who is still living, and after her death to Robert, his son by the said Elizabeth, and the heirs of his body. Overesley and Merston Botiler. The manors (extents given), held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service. He died on Monday before the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 4 Richard II. The aforesaid Robert, his son, aged 8 years, is his heir.

	Writ to the escheator in Cornwall and Devon to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Simon, who held in chief of the manor of Dyuelek in Ireland, which manor is held of the king in chief and was in the hand of Edward III on account of the sojourn in England of Bartholomew de Burgherssh, lord thereof, at Easter, 43 Edward III, in contravention of an ordinance lately made at Gildeford; as Thomas, son and heir of the said Simon, has prayed that, inasmuch as he has proved his age before John Fitz Rery, escheator in Ireland, where he was born, and order has been given for delivery to him of all his father’s lands etc. there, (which by reason of his minority were in the custody of Robert de Preston, knight, by grant and sale of Edward III), as appears by letters patent under the king’s great seal used in Ireland, the king will be pleased to order that all the lands in the above counties held by his father of Edward late prince of Wales and duke of Cornwall, which by reason of his minority were taken into the hand of the said prince of Wales and committed by him to Neel de Loryng until his (the petitioner’s) lawful age, may be restored to him. CORNWALL.	Inq. taken at Grampount, Wednesday after St. Hilary, 4 Richard II.
	The said Simon held the under-mentioned lands etc. [in his demesne as of fee] (fn. 4). Bree and Bodbran. Lands etc. members of the manor of Bratton, co. Devon, which manor, with Cryde and Alfardiscote, co. Devon, and the premises in Bree and Bodbran, was held by the said Simon of Edward, late prince of Wales and duke of Cornwall, by service of 2 1/2 knights’ fees of the fees of Mortain, as of the honor of Lanceveton as of the duchy of Cornwall. The said lands etc. were held of Simon by knight’s service. On the death of Simon the prince had possession of the services of Bree and Bodbran by reason of the minority of Thomas, Simon’s son and heir; and since the death of the prince the king has been in possession and received the issues. Simon died on Friday after St. Matthew, 44 Edward III. The aforesaid Thomas is his son and heir. Neel de Loryng was warned at Braton by John Stoke to be present at the inquisition, but did not appear, nor anyone in his name.

Cornwall, which are members of the said manor, held as above (Cornwall inquisition). Hackeston, Boyngton and Asshroges by Bratton. Lands etc. worth 4l. yearly, held of the prince, as of the honor of Lanceston, by service of half a fee of Mortain. Hautebray. The manor, held of James Daudelegh, knight, as of his honor of Barn’, by service of a knight’s fee. Southmolton. 10l. yearly rent in the manor and borough, held of the same James in free socage. Since his death Neel de Loryng, knight, has been in possession of all the premises in Devon by grant of the prince, except the manor of Hautebray, of which James Daudelegh has been in possession by reason of the minority of Thomas, Simon’s son and heir, and except the premises held in socage in Molton and Barn’, of which the said Thomas has been in possession. Neel de Loryng was warned at Braton by John Stoke to be present at the inquisition, and did not appear; but William Beare, his bailiff, was present and had nothing to say etc.
