299.	John atte Welle, or Ate Wille, Friar Minor
	(Writ missing)
DEVON.	Inq. (indented) taken at Exeter, Monday after St. Denis, 4 Richard II.
	Exeter. Roger ate Wille, formerly citizen of Exeter, was seised in his demesne as of fee and right of a messuage in the high street of Exeter called ‘Sottonysyn,’ and died seised thereof without heir. After his death Friar John ate Wille, professed in the order of Friars Minors at Exeter, claiming the messuage as son and heir of Roger and asserting that he would be privileged by the court of Rome to take up his hereditary succession notwithstanding his profession aforesaid, entered thereon and died seised thereof. Isabel late the wife of the aforesaid Roger was seised in her demesne as of fee and right of a messuage in the high street by the Gildhall, and, in accordance with the immemorial custom of the city of Exeter whereby all messuages and lands etc. in the city and suburbs are bequeathable, bequeathed it in her testament to the aforesaid Friar John and his heirs, and he was seised thereof accordingly and died seised thereof.

SALOP.	Inq. taken at Alvythel’, 6 March, 4 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned messuage, land and rent etc. to herself and the heirs of her body. Asteley. A messuage, a watermill, a carucate of land, 2 a. meadow, 1 a. pasture and 1 a. wood. Asteley and Nordleye. 30s. rent. The above are held of the king in chief by service of providing a man riding with the king for forty days at his own costs when there is war in Wales. Remesley. A carucate of land, held of Roger Power, service not known; and half a virgate of land, worth nothing because common, held of Roger Corbet, service not known. Alvytheley. A croft and 1 a. land, held of Thomas de Alvytheley, service not known. Nordeley. A nook of land and 8 a. land, held of Roger atte Lee, service not known. She died on 25 December last. John, son of John de Fillod her son, aged 7 years and more, is her heir.

CUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Carlisle, Saturday the feast of SS. Peter and Paul, 4 Richard II.
	He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor, messuages and lands etc. Havereysholme. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of grand serjeanty, to wit, carrying a book [and] a carpet (tapetum) at Takkyng ake in the king’s forest of Ingilwode every year on the morrow of Martinmas. And he should have a pig there for his said service. Lynstok. A messuage and 28 a. land, held of the bishop of Carlisle by homage and fealty and suit to the bishop’s court at Lynstok every three weeks, and by service of rendering to the bishop 1 lb. pepper every year on the feast of the Assumption. Brunscath. A toft and 26 a. land, held of the same bishop by service of rendering to him 3d. at Martinmas and Whitsun equally. Terreby. [A toft and] 9 a. land, held of William Beset and William de Aglamby by service of rendering a rose at Midsummer. Kirkoswald. A toft and 30 a. land, held of the heirs of Adam de Burton by service of doing three suits yearly to the court there. Carlisle. A messuage, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 2d. yearly for housegable. He died on Wednesday the feast of St. Peter’s Chains last. John de Appelby, son of Adam de Appelby his brother, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

Three tenements and 48 a. land, held of John de Kyrkeby by service of rendering 3s. yearly, and 4s. 3d. yearly for cornage; and a tenement and 41 a. land, held of William de Langwathby, chaplain, by service of rendering 10d. for free farm and 13 1/2d. for cornage. Neuby. A tenement and 16 a. land, held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of rendering 12d. yearly for free farm. Overton. Two tenements and 20 a. land and meadow, held of Richard de Ristwald by service of rendering a peppercorn yearly. Colby. 1 1/2 a. meadow, held of Thomas de Mallerstang by service of rendering a peppercorn yearly. Ormesheved. Two tenements and 4 bovates of land, held of Robert de Ormesheved and Robert de Sandford by service of rendering yearly 3s. to the former and 1d. to the latter. Kabergh. A tenement and 13 a. land, held of Roger de Fulthorp, knight, by service of rendering 3 1/2d. yearly for cornage. Helton. Gloucester.	Inq. taken …, Thursday in Easter week, 4 Richard II.
	He was lately seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned moiety of the manor of Button; but long before his death he gave the said moiety by charter of feoffment, without the king’s licence, to Thomas Styward, William Heyberare, John Maune, Ralph Waleys, Richard Scotard, Cradock Phelippes, Richard Cook and William Wilcokes, chaplain, and their heirs, and all the tenants thereof attorned to the said feoffees except the following, to wit, John Button, knight, who held of the said Edmund divers tenements in the said moiety by service of 7s., homage, fealty and a heriot, William Stokewell, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 3 1/2d., 2 lbs. cummin, homage, fealty and a heriot, Thomas Man, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 4s., fealty and a heriot, Peter Wytyng, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 12s., fealty and a heriot, Thomas Gybbes, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 4s., fealty and a heriot, John Colyns, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 16d., fealty and a heriot, and John Phyppes, who held of him a messuage therein by service of 5s., fealty and a heriot. On the day of his death the said Edmund had no estate in the moiety, except in the aforesaid tenants who did not attorn. He held the under-mentioned messuage and 1/2 virgate of land in Button in his demesne as of fee. He held the under-mentioned moieties of the manors of Fylton and Harristoke jointly with Margaret, his wife, who is still living, by gift and feoffment of Thomas FitzNichol, knight, and Margery, his wife, to them and the heirs of the said Edmund, they rendering during their lives 16 marks yearly to the said Thomas and Margery. He held the under-mentioned manor of Aylmynton jointly with the said Margaret, by gift and feoffment of Thomas Fraunceys, late vicar of the church of Button, and Nicholas Adam, clerk, to them and the heirs of the said Margaret. The manor is charged with 20 marks yearly to Christina Styward. [Button]. (fn. 1) A moiety of the manor, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Button, A messuage and 1/2 virgate of land, held of Nicholas Berkeley, knight, by service of 5s. Fylton and Harristoke. Moieties of the manors, held of Reynold de Cobham, knight, and Eleanor, his wife, in right of the said Eleanor, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Aylmynton. The manor, held of the bishop of Worcester by service of suit to the court of Hembury twice a year. He died on Thursday after the Purification last. William, his son, aged 7 years on the feat of All Saints last, is his heir.

	Commission in the form of a writ of Mandamus to John Beauchamp, knight, John Joce and John Cassy. 1 April, 4 Richard II.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Gloucester before John Beauchamp, knight, and John Cassy, Thursday after St. George, 4 Richard II.
	Button. A moiety of the manor. The finding is word for word as in the previous inquisition. Button. A messuage and 1/2 virgate of land, held as in the previous inquisition. The rents from the aforesaid tenements have been received since the death of Edmund by Hugh Byselegh, escheator. Fylton. A moiety of the manor. Harristoke. A moiety of the manor. Ailmynton. The manor. The findings as to the above moieties and manor are word for word as in the previous inquisition, except that the feoffors of the manor of Ailmynton are said to be William Heyberare and Nicholas Adam, clerk. Date of death and heir as above.
	Writ to the escheator to assign dower to Margaret late the wife of the said Edmund, after receiving her oath not to marry without the king’s licence. 16 May, 4 Richard II.

GLOUCESTER.	Assignment of dower (indented) made at Button, 20 October, 4 Richard II (sic).
	The following are assigned to her as her dower of a messuage, 1/2 virgate of land and rents of 33s. 7 1/2d. and 2 lbs. cummin in Button. Button. A third part in the lower part of the aforesaid messuage containing 12 feet in length and 23 feet in breadth, 4 a. land in ‘Westfeld,’ 4 a. land in Estfeld, 1 a. meadow in ‘Bridhammede,’ and rents of 11s. 2 1/2d. and a third part of 2 lbs. of cummin. The assignment was made in the presence of William Heyberare, Roger Marmyon, Robert Kyngton and William Broun, the nearest friends of William, son and heir of the said Edmund. Note of the appointment by the said Margaret of Walter Gryffyth as her attorney against the king to claim her dower of the free tenement late of the said Edmund in Oldelond, Button and Hanam.

305.	William de Touthorp, a minor
	Writ of Devenerunt, 26 January, 4 Richard II
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Estrason, Tuesday before Palm Sunday, 4 Richard II.
	The under-mentioned two-thirds of a manor came to the hands of Edward III by the death of William de Bleseby, who died seised thereof in his demesne as of fee, and by reason of the minority of the said William de Tonthorp, his kinsman and heir, and are still in the king’s hand. Caylesthorp. Two-thirds of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. William de Touthorp died on Monday after the Assumption, 44 Edward III. He was son and heir of Joan daughter and heir of the aforesaid William de Bleseby, and died without heir of his body; so that William, son of Peter de Bleseby brother of the said William de Bleseby, aged 21 years on the feast of the Annunciation last, is his kinsman and next heir.

307.	Katharine, late the wife of William de Bleseby
	Writ of Mandamus, 24 January, 4 Richard II
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Estrason, Tuesday after Palm Sunday, 4 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned third part of a manor in dower after the death of the said William, sometime her husband, by the king’s assignment. Thomas, perpetual vicar of the church of Legesby, Thomas de Croxby, chaplain, and Thomas Wace of Welyngham were seised of the under-mentioned manor of Bleseby in their demesne as of fee in fee simple by charter of feoffment of William de Bleseby, and by their charter of feoffment after the death of the said William enfeoffed the said Katharine thereof, to hold to her and the heirs of her body begotten by the said William, with remainder in default to William’s right heirs. Caylesthorp. A third part of the manor, held of the king in chief. Bleseby. The manor, held of the prior of Sixhill by knight’s service. She died on Saturday before Michaelmas, 3 Richard II, without heir of her body begotten by the said William. William, son of Peter de Bleseby brother of the said William, aged 21 years on the feast of the Annunciation last, is kinsman and next heir of the same William. The king by letters patent demised the premises at farm to William Dalason by mainprise of John de Kevermond and Nicholas Durnaunt, and since the death of Katharine the issues and profits thereof have been received by the king by reason of the minority of the said William son of Peter.

308.	Maud, late the wife of Edmund de Bensted
	Writ: 16 September, 4 Richard II
WILTS.	Inq. taken at Salisbury, 28 September, 4 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned 12l. 13s. 4d. rent for life by way of dower after the death of the said Edmund. The reversion belongs to Edward de Benstede, brother and heir of John de Benstede son of John de Benstede son of the said Edmund. Wintreslowe. 12l. 13s. 4d. rent, held (together with 7l. 6s. 8d. issuing from the manor of Wintreslowe) of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The said Maud died on Tuesday before the Nativity of the Virgin Mary last. Heir not known.

309.	Alice, late the wife of Thomas de Botheby
	Writ: 10 August, 4 Richard II
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Botheby, Thursday the eve of St. Bartholomew, 4 Richard II. She held the under-mentioned messuages, lands and rents for life, of the inheritance of the said Thomas and by his gift. The reversion belongs to the heirs of Thomas.
	Welton, Wylughby and Tatirsall. A messuage, 4 bovates of land and 6s. 8d. rent, held of Mary de Percy, daughter and heir of Joan daughter and heir of John de Orreby, knight, by knight’s service. The said Mary holds of the king in chief and is a minor in the king’s wardship. Skirbek. 20s. rent, held of John de Rocheford, knight, service not known. Welton. A messuage and 2 bovates of land, held of the heirs of Hamby by service of 8s. yearly and suit of court. She died on Tuesday the eve of St. Peter’s Chains, 4 Richard II, at Botheby. Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas de Botheby, aged 7 years, is next heir of the said Thomas.

SUFFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Brokford, Monday after St. Martin the Bishop, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor and land etc. by the courtesy of England, as of the right of Joan, formerly his wife. The reversion belongs to Bartholomew Bacoun, knight, as kinsman and heir of the said Joan, to wit, son of Isabel sister of Cecily her mother. Brom. The manor (extent given, including 30 1/2 a. land held of the prior of Theford by service of 4s. 4d. yearly, and 5 a. land held of John de Hoo by service of 10 1/2d. yearly), held of the king in chief as of serjeanty by the service of leading the men assigned for war in Wales from the county of Suffolk as far as the dyke of St. Edmund near Le Newemarch, receiving 4d. for each man. Oclee. 34 a. land, 7 a. meadow and perquisites of court worth 6s. 8d. yearly, held of the abbot of St. Edmund by knight’s service. He died about the feast of St. Matthew last. The aforesaid Bartholomew, aged 30 years and more, is the heir, as stated above.

	Writ: 20 August, 4 Richard II
STAFFORD.	Inq. taken at Pencrych, Monday after Michaelmas, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor of Pencrych jointly with Amice, his wife, who is still living, by gift of Alan de Buxhull, knight, and Thomas Cheyne to him and the said Amice and his heirs. He held the under-mentioned manor of Rodbaston jointly as above, by gift of John de Peyto, knight, and Eleanor, his wife, to him and the said Amice and his heirs. Pencrych. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. Rodbaston. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee. He died on 29 July last. Anne and Elizabeth, his daughters, aged 10 years and 9 years respectively, are his heirs.

KENT.	Inq. (indented) taken at Wy, Tuesday after St. Matthew, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor for life, with reversion to the king by reason of the forfeiture of Ingelram de Coucy. John Parker of Yepiswych, esquire of Isabel the king’s aunt, receives and will receive 10l. yearly for life from the manor by the king’s grant by letters patent [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1377–1381, p. 267]. Tremworth. The manor, held of the earl of Stafford, as of his honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service and payment of 2s. 1d. yearly at the castle of Tonebregge. Date of death as above. Heirs not given.

OXFORD.	Inq. (indented) taken at Bursetre, Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manors of Bukenhulle and Godyndon jointly with Amice, his wife, who is still living, to them and his heirs, by charters of Edward III. He held the under-mentioned fee-farm of 81l. by grant of Edward III [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1374–1377, p. 89] as follows, to wit, 45l. yearly for life, and 27l. yearly in joint feoffment with the said Amice. The reversion of the whole belongs to the king. He held the undermentioned messuage etc. in Stoke de Lyle in his demesne as of fee. Bukenhulle. The manor, held of the heir of John Lenveisi by knight’s service. Godyndon. The manor, held of the king at fee-farm by service of rendering 10l. yearly at the Exchequer. Hedyngdon manor, Bolynden hundred, and the hundred beyond the North Gate of Oxford. A fee-farm of 81l. for the said manor and hundreds. Stoke de Lyle. A messuage, a toft and 2 virgates of land, held of John de Noweys, knight, by service of 13s. rent and by service of reaping crops in autumn with two men for one day at the lord’s costs. He died on Sunday after St. James last. Heirs as above, aged respectively 10 years and more and 7 years and more.

LONDON.	Inq. taken before the mayor, 31 August, 4 Richard II.
	He died seised in joint feoffment with Amice, his wife, who is still living, of the under-mentioned tenements in the parishes of St. Peter and All Hallows by London Wall, late of Nicholas Rumbold, ‘whittawyer,’ late citizen of London, which Edward III by letters patent dated 16 February, 49 Edward III [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1374–1377, p. 78], granted to him and the said Amice and his heirs. He also died seised in joint feoffment with the said Amice of the under-mentioned tenements in the parish of All Hallows the Great, which he and Amice had by grant of Richard de Preston and Richard Toky, and also by gift of John Rauf, chaplain, to hold to them and his heirs. Parish of St. Peter in Bradstret ward. A tenement with an adjacent garden containing 2 dwellings. Parish of All Hallows by London Wall in the same ward. A tenement with an adjacent garden and 5 shops annexed thereto; another tenement with an adjacent garden and 8 shops annexed thereto; and another tenement with a garden and 4 shops adjacent. Parish of All Hallows the Great in Douegate ward. A tenement with an adjacent quay on the east side of the lane called ‘Cosyneslane,’ wherein he was dwelling at the time of his death; another tenement in the same lane next to the above tenement; and another tenement with an adjacent quay on the west side of the same lane, wherein Peter Segres, dyer, now dwells. All the above are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. Date of death and heirs as first above.

	Writ of Mandamus, 20 May, 4 Richard II
SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Romeseye, Monday the morrow of Trinity, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. and rent in his demesne as of fee. Lokerle. A messuage, 100 a. arable, 2 a. meadow, 20 a. wood in several, and 30 a. underwood. Lokerle and Tederle. 8l. rent of tenants. All the above are held of the king in chief by service of rendering 6l. 11s. 9d. yearly at the Exchequer at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff, and 5s. yearly to the lord of Shyrfeld. And the lady of Wemeryng receives 40s. yearly by way of dower after the death of John Botyller, knight, her late husband. He died on Christmas Eve, 1 Richard II. Isabel, his sister, wife of Geoffrey Roukele, aged 40 years and more, is his heir. Since his death William Upton has received the issues of the premises, by what title the jurors know not.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Great Donmowe, 6 April, 4 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee. Alfreston in Great Donmowe. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. He died on 27 November, 46 Edward III. Walter Bygod, aged 21 years and more, son of Thomas Bygod his son, is his kinsman and heir. Since his death John Beverlee, late one of the esquires of Edward III, has been in possession of the whole manor and received the issues thereof by grant of Edward III, who committed the same to him by letters patent [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1370–1374, p. 230] until the lawful age of the said heir.

	He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. Marham. A messuage, 146 a. land, 5 a. meadow, 4l. rent, perquisites of a court with view of frankpledge, and 44 boonworks in autumn, held of the king in chief by service of paying 10s. yearly for ward of the castle of Dovere. Westoftes. A messuage, 200 a. land, 12 a. meadow, 50s. rent, and perquisites of a court with view of frankpledge, held of the bishop of Norwich by knight’s service. He died about the feast of All Saints, 45 Edward III. Heir as above. Since his death John de Beverle has been in possession, as above.
