Writ of mandamus, 5 July, 47 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at York, 8 August, 47 Edward III.
Northgevildale. Nicholas de Cave was formerly seised of a messuage and 4 bovates and 4 selions of land there, and enfeoffed thereof Ralph de Quixlay and Agnes his wife and John de Loundon, son of the said Ralph, to hold to them and the heirs of the body of the said John, with remainder to the heirs of the said Ralph. Ralph, Agnes and John were seised accordingly. Ralph and Agnes are dead, and John has died without heir of his body, so that the premises ought to revert to Maud daughter of John de Quixlay as kinswoman and heir of the said Ralph, to wit, daughter of John son of John his brother. The premises are held of the king in chief by fealty and service of rendering 5s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff.
John de London died on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 43 Edward III. The said Maud, aged 26 years and more, is kinswoman and heir of him and the said Ralph.
Since his death John Raynald has had possession of the premises and received the issues thereof, for which he is to answer to the king.

265. NICHOLAS DE LONGEFORD, knight.
Writ, 6 June, 47 Edward III.
LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Mancestre, Friday after Corpus Christi, 47 Edward III.
Wythinton. The manor. On Friday before Palm Sunday, 36 Edward III, he enfeoffed by his charter William de Salford, parson of the church of Longeford, Thomas de Longeford, parson of the church of Hallewinfeld, and John Cressy, parson of the church of Thorp, of the said manor in fee, and they hold it of the lord la War’, lord of Mancestre, by homage and fealty, 19s. yearly rent, suit to his court of Mancestre every three weeks, and suit to the county court of Lancaster every six weeks.
He died on Monday before the Ascension last. Nicholas his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Sothewelle, Friday the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 47 Edward III.
Knapthorp. A moiety of the site of the manor, held in right of Alice his wife of the lord de Deyncourt by knight’s service; and a carucate of demesne land, 4a. meadow, a moiety of a windmill, and 44s. yearly rent. The said Alice is still alive.

STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Stafford, 17 June, 47 Edward III. (Fourteen jurors.)
Ethelaston. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the earl of Stafford by knight’s service and suit to his court at Stafford every three weeks.
He died on 23 May last. Heir as above.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Derby, Friday after St. Barnabas, 47 Edward III.
Barleburgh. A third part of the site of the manor, with a carucate of land and 4l. yearly rent, held of the lord de Darcy, as of his manor of Ekynton, by knight’s service and suit to the court of Ekynton every three weeks.
Kynwaldmersh. 4 messuages, 40a. land, 10a. meadow and 60s. rent, held of the king in chief by service of providing a horse, a sack and a ‘prikke’ in the Welsh war whenever the king goes to war there.
Hatheresheg. A moiety of the site of the manor, with 5 bovates of land, 4a. meadow, 60s. rent and a moiety of a watermill, held of Roger de Belers, as of the manor of Crich, by service of fealty only.
Thurvaston. A moiety of the town (extent given), held of the king in chief by payment of 8 marks yearly at the Exchequer, as appears by the king’s charter to Nicholas de Longeford, father of the deceased.
Little Stretton. 2s. 6d. yearly rent from tenements held of William Fraunceys by service of 12d. yearly.
Morton. A moiety of the site of the manor called ‘Parkhalle,’ with 2 carucates of land, 6a. meadow, a moiety of a watermill, a moiety of a windmill, and 10l. rent, held of the lord Deyncourt, as of the manor of Elmeton, by knight’s service.
Haselonde. 43s. 7d. rent from tenements held of the lord Deyncourt by knight’s service, as of the manor of Elmeton.
The last three items he held in right of Alice his wife.
Dugmanton. 35s. 8d. yearly rent from tenements held of the abbot of Wellebek.
Bakewelle, Derley, Rouseley, Stanton, Leye, Calton and Chattesworth. 105s. 2d. yearly rent from tenements held of Sir Richard ……. by fealty only.
All the above rents and services he granted by his charter to John de Cressey, chaplain, who by his charter regranted them to him and Alice his wife for their lives, with successive remainders to William their son and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of Nicholas.

SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Yevele, Friday before All Saints, 47 Edward III.
Newton Sermavile. A messuage, a carucate of land and 16s. rent, held of the king in chief by service of 6s. 8d. yearly.
He died at the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 35 Edward III. Agnes his daughter, aged 1 year on the day of his death, is his heir.
Since his death Eleanor his wife has had possession of the premises and received the issues thereof, because she held them jointly with him by the king’s licence by grant of William Musket.

Little Missyngdene. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on the eve of the Nativity of St. Mary, 30 Edward III. John his son, now aged 22 years and more, is his heir.
John Villeres and Margaret his wife had possession of the premises from Walter’s death until 4 July, 41 Edward III, when they were taken into the king’s hands by the escheators for the time being, who have accounted for the issues in the Exchequer.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Frampton, Tuesday after the Annunciation, 47 Edward III.
Mithyngesby. The advowson of the church, held of the prior of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, service not known.
The said John de Multon, son of John de Multon of Frampton, knight, long before his death alienated in fee the manor of Frampton and all his lands &c. in the county of Lincoln, except the aforesaid advowson, to Thomas de Mapelton, parson of the church of Frampton, Roger de Meres of Kirketon, John de Cobeldyk of Frampton, Roger de Tope, Thomas Claymond and Richard de Welby of Kirketon.
He died in parts beyond seas on Friday before St. Bartholomew, 42 Edward III. Maud his daughter, aged 7 years and more, is his heir. She is married to William son of William de Spaigne of Boston.
Since the above feoffment the feoffees have had possession of the lands &c. ahenated to them and received the issues thereof.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Cambridge, 5 July, 47 Edward III.
Hynton. A moiety of a toft and 50a. land, whereof 3r. are meadow, held of the son and heir of the lord de Moubray of Axholm, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, a rent of 7s. 2d. yearly, and suit of court twice a year.
He died on 24 October, 46 Edward III. Robert his son, aged 15 years and more and unmarried, is his heir.
Ever since his death William de Lewmes of Hynton has had possession of the premises and received the issues.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken 24 August, 47 Edward III (place not given).
Turveye. A messuage, 92a. land, 10a. meadow, 8a. pasture, 40a. wood, and a water-mill, held of John Trailly, knight, by knight’s service; two-thirds of a toft and 53 1/2a. land, held of William Mordant by knight’s service; a dovecote and 60a. land, held of Thomas de Reynes, knight, by knight’s service; a messuage, a dovecote, 2 cottages, and 14a. land, held of Elizabeth Latymer by knight’s service; and 30a. land, held of Emery de Sancto Amando.
He died on Sunday before SS. Simon and Jude last. Heir, aged 18 years and more, as above.
The said lords have had possession of the premises since his death on account of the minority of his heir.

Chesham. 6l. rent, held of the prince by suit to the court of Wallyngford twice a year, of William de Mulsho by a rent of 40d. yearly, and of Elizabeth Latymer, service not known.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken ex officio at Turvey, 8 November, 46 Edward III.
On Sunday before SS. Simon and Jude in the said year he killed Ellen his wife at Turveye while insane, and on the same day drowned himself while insane in a pond at Turveye. He held:—
Turveye. A moiety of a manor (extent given), held of John Trailly, knight, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, except a messuage and 3a. land held of William Mordaunt, services not known, and a cottage with a pightle of 1/2a. land held of the prior of St. Neots by payment of 16d. and a capon yearly.
Heir as last above. John Trailly has possession of the wardship of the said heir.
The said Edmund had goods worth 17l. 16d. in the hands of William Mordaunt, the particulars whereof appear in a paper &c.

WARWICK. Inq. (indented) made at Coventre, Friday after St. Laurence, 47 Edward III.
Stretford on Avene. He formerly held the manor of Stretford for life by demise of Wolstan late bishop of Worcester, as parcel of the temporalities of the bishopric of Worcester of the foundation of the king’s progenitors. Long before his death it was taken into the king’s hand by occasion of the said demise, and is still in the king’s hand.
Thorndon. The manor, held of the heirs of Thomas Shirley, services not known.
Lodyngton. The manor, held of the earl of Warrewyk, services not known.
Bysshopesdon. The manor, held of the bishop of Worcester, services not known.
Lapworth. A messuage and 10a. land, held of the same, services not known.
He had nothing in the above four items except in right of Beatrice his wife, who survives.
Sheldon. The manor, held jointly by him and the said Beatrice for their lives by demise of Henry de Sheldon. It is held of John de Aroundel, knight, services unknown.
The following he held jointly with the said Beatrice, to them and the heirs of their bodies:—
Sheldon, Colleshull, Chirchebykenill, ……, Kyngton, Merston Cuilly, and Castelbromwych. A messuage, a mill, 2 carucates of land, 20a. meadow, 20a. pasture, 20a. wood and 40s. rent, and the advowson of the church of Sheldon, held of Beatrice daughter and heir of John de Sheldon, services not known, by gift of Richard de Kyngton, parson of the church of Sheldon.
Drayton and Dodewell. A messuage, 2 carucates of land, 4a. pasture and 30s. rent, held of William Trussell, knight, services not known, by gift of the same parson.
Muchelwylmuncote. A toft and 2 carucates of land, held of the earl of Pembrigg, services not known, by gift of William Wyncote.
He died on 5 June last. William his brother, aged 60 years and more, is his next heir.

WARWICK. Inq. made at Kyrkeby Monachorum, Thursday after St. Matthew, 47 Edward III.
Herdeburgh. The manor.
Wodecote, Palyngton, Bedeworth and Folbrok. 8 messuages, 8 virgates of land, 20a. meadow, and 8s. 6 1/2d. rent.
All held for life, the reversion belonging to John de Hopton, kinsman and heir of Walter de Hopton, knight, by a fine levied in 13 Edward III, between the said Walter and Joan his wife, querents, and John de Peyto, the elder, deforciant, whereby the said Walter acknowledged the premises to be the right of the said John the elder, who granted that, after the death of John de Peyto, the younger, who held the premises for life of the inheritance of John the elder with reversion to the said John the elder and his heirs, the premises should remain to Walter and Joan and the heirs of Walter. The premises are held of the earl of Pembrigg by service of 2s. yearly.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) made at Forthyngebrugg, 4 October, 47 Edward III.
Rokebourne. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
She died on 16 September last. Walter de Romeseye, knight, aged 30 years and more, is her son and heir.
WILTS. Inq. (indented) made at Coumbe, 5 October, 47 Edward III.
Coumbe. A moiety of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Kydurmunster, Tuesday after St. Matthew, 47 Edward III.
Kydermunstre. 15l. yearly rent receivable from Denise late the wife of Hugh de Kokeseye, who survives (superstite), for the manor of Kydermunstre, which she holds for life. The said rent is held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court and by the king’s charter of licence required therefor.
She died on 15 September last. Heir as above, aged 40 years and more.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Bedmenstre, Wednesday after St. Denis, 47 Edward III.
She died on Friday after St. Matthew last, holding:—

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Hokerell, 12 August, 47 Edward III.
Asshildham. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Reylegh, by knight’s service. He held it in fee tail jointly with Alesia his wife, who survives, by gift and feoffment of William Frere to him and Alesia and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
Radewynter. The manor called ‘le Roos manoir,’ held of the heirs of the earl of Hereford by knight’s service. He held it jointly with the said Alesia in form aforesaid by gift and feoffment of Robert Lambourn, Ralph Bulwyk, clerk, Reynold Berners and William Bloy, clerk.
Great Sampford and Hempsted. A messuage, 50a. land and 10a. meadow, held of Walter Fitz Wauter, knight, by service of 16s. yearly. He held the same jointly with the said Alesia by gift and feoffment of the said Robert and his co-feoffees and Richard Hasilbech to him and Alesia for their lives, with remainder to John son of John his son and Elizabeth wife of the said John son of John and the heirs of their bodies.
Hempsted. 10a. arable, held of Henry de Coggeshale, knight, by service of 2s. yearly. He held the same jointly with the said Alesia in form aforesaid by gift and feoffment of Robert Lambourn, William Bloy and Richard Hasilbech to him and Alesia for their lives, with remainder as last above.
He died on 3 May last. John son of John his son, aged 11 years and more, is his kinsman and heir.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Storteford, 12 August, 47 Edward III.
Saret. The manor, held of the abbot of St. Albans by service of 30s. yearly. He held it in all respects as the manor of Asshildham (last inquisition).
Gedeleston. The manor, held of the heirs of the earl of Hereford, service not known. He held it in all respects as the 10a. arable in Hempsted (last inquisition).

274. NICHOLAS SURURGICUS, alias LECHE.
Writ of mandamus, 7 December, 47 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, Tuesday the feast of St. Lucy, 47 Edward III.
The said Nicholas died about 100 years ago, seised of:—
Fletestret in the suburb of London. A tenement adjoining that of the abbot of Cirencestre, held of the king in chief as a free burgage, as is the whole city of London. The churchwardens of St. Bride’s, Fletestret, have received 12s. yearly therefrom for the last 100 years, and the abbot of Cirencester 8s.
Nicholas died without heir, so far as the jurors can ascertain.
Since his death William de Burgh, clerk, and Emery de Shirlond, clerk, have severally had possession for a time, title not known; and the jurors know of no others who have had possession. About the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist last the said Emery, being ill and in extremity, by his letter of attorney directed to John atte Celer enfeoffed Nicholas Chaddesden, Richard Blaby, clerk, and John Wentbrigg of the tenement, in order that they might afterwards enfeoff thereof the prior and convent of St. Mary’s, Coventre, when they could obtain the king’s licence. The said feoffees are now in possession and receive the issues to the use of the prior and convent.

275. THOMAS DE STAPELTON.
Writ, 21 September, 47 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Kirkeby in Kendale, Saturday after St. Luke, 47 Edward III.
Kentemer. The manor, held by him in tail male, with successive remainders in tail male to Brian de Stapleton, knight, and Miles son of Miles de Stapleton, and with ultimate remainder to his right heirs, by grant of John Leget, parson of the church of Melshamby, William de Brune, William de Birkyn, chaplain, and John de Holm, clerk, who had it in fee simple by feoffment of the said Thomas, and regranted it to him by charter, as above, under the king’s licence dated 28 July, 47 Edward III. It is held of the king in chief by homage and service of an eighth part of a moiety of the manor of Kirkeby in Kendale in barony.
He died without heir male of his body on the feast of St. Laurence last. The said Brian is his heir to the manor by the aforesaid entail; and Elizabeth wife of Thomas de Metham, knight, aged 24 years and more, is his sister and heir.

Carleton by Snayth. The manor (extent given), held in all respects as the manor of Kentemer above (Westmoreland inquisition). It is held of the king by homage and fealty and service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a ferry across the river Ayre.
Hathelsay. The manor (extent given), except a plot called ’Squallay’ and 6l. rent ordained for a certain chantry, held in fee tail to him and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The manor is charged with 10l. yearly to Isabel de Stapleton for life, and with 33s. 4d. yearly to William de Brune for life. The extent includes a fishery, two ferries across the river Ayre, and the advowson of a chantry. The manor with the hamlets is held of the castle and honor of Pontefract by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Westhathelsay. A messuage and 5 bovates of land, held of the king in chief by the king’s charter, rendering 40s. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.

Northolm. 2 waste tofts and 2 bovates of uncultivated land, held of the liberty of St. Peter’s, York.
Wygynthorpp. A messuage, a waste plot, 8 bovates of land and 2d. rent of free tenants, with a bovate of land, a close called ‘Spitelclose,’ 3d. rent of free tenants and three-fourths of the advowson of the church in Tyveryngton, an appurtenance of Wygynthorpp, held of Andrew Lutrell by knight’s service.
Stapelton. The manor, with the towns of Dalton, Ryell and Melsamby (extents given). The manor is held of Thomas de Richemond, knight, by knight’s service, and the towns of Dalton and Melsamby are held of John de Gray by knight’s service and a rent of 5s. 2d. yearly.
Kyrkeby Fletham. The manor, with its parcels Fletham and Langton, and a rent of 13s. 10d. from free tenants at Langton, held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service.
Thorp Arches. A messuage and a bovate of land.

He died at Lincoln on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 43 Edward III. Margaret his daughter, aged 4 years and more, is his heir.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Neuport, 16 November, 47 Edward III.
Cheswardyn. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee in joint feoffment with the said Hamo, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Hamo’s right heirs, by the king’s charter of licence. The extent includes two parks.
Straunge Betton. The manor, held for her life of Roger Lestraunge, lord of Knokyn, by service of a pair of white gloves, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Hamo.
She died on 31 October last. John Lestraunge, son of John Lestraunge, the younger, kinsman of the said Hamo, is next heir to the said manors. He was 19 years of age on 1 August last.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Sleford, Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 47 Edward III.
Threkyngham. A capital messuage, a dovecote, 60a. land and meadow, and 50s. 8d. rent, held by the said John jointly with Agnes his wife, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of Henry de Bello Monte, as of the castle of Folkyngham, by knight’s service; a shot of arable called ‘Crossewong’ containing 24a., held in like manner of William Marmyon of Kyseby, knight, by the same service, rendering to him 13s. 4d. yearly; and a messuage and a bovate of land, held jointly in like manner of the prince of Wales, as of the fee ‘del Haye,’ by the service aforesaid.
Agnes, aged 11 years and more, daughter of the said John and Agnes, is their heir. John died in the parts of Brittany about Martinmas, 39 Edward III. Agnes his wife survived him and had possession of the premises unmarried for two years, and then took to husband John atte More of the county of York. John atte More and Agnes had possession of the premises and took all the profits as of her right until Sunday before St. Margaret, 43 Edward III, when she died, whereupon Walter Kelby, late escheator, had possession of them (except the shot called ‘Crossewong’) until Palm Sunday, 46 Edward III, when he delivered them by indenture to Thomas de Navenby, late escheator, who had possession until 3 May, 46 Edward III, when he delivered them to Alexander de Barton by the king’s writ. William Marmyon has had possession of the said shot ever since the death of Agnes. After the death of Agnes the daughter, if she should die without heir of her body, all the premises should remain to the right heirs of Amandus Sourdevale, father of the said John, who is still living.

Threkyngham. A capital messuage, a dovecote, 80a. land and meadow, 109s. 3d. yearly rent, and service of 1 lb. pepper and 1 lb. cummin, held jointly with Agnes his wife, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of Henry de Bello Monte by knight’s service, as of the fee of Gaunt belonging to the castle of Folkyngham, which castle the said Henry held of the king in chief; a shot called ‘Crossewonge’ containing 40a., held jointly of William Marmyon, knight, by knight’s service and a rent of 19s. 3d. yearly; and a cottage and a bovate of land, held by John Hode of the said John and Agnes at a rent of 16s. yearly, and by them of Henry de Bello Monte by the service aforesaid.
Death, heir (aged 12 years), and subsequent possession as above; except that John del More and Agnes had possession of the premises until Sunday after the Assumption, 43 Edward III, on which day Agnes died, and that Thomas de Navenby delivered the premises to Thomas, parson of the church of Botheby, attorney of Alexander de Barton, on Wednesday before Easter, 47 Edward III. The premises render 16d. yearly to the castle of Folkyngham, 3s. 9d. yearly for sheriff’s aid, and 2s. yearly to John Broun of Osbernby.
YORK. Inq. (indented) taken at Hedon in Holdernesse, Monday the morrow of the Close of Easter, 48 Edward III.
The said John held no lands &c. in the county.
Death as above. Agnes his daughter, aged 12 years and more, is his next heir. Thomas de Navenby, keeper of the fees of the prince of Wales in the county, seized the said heir at Swyn in Holdernesse about Christmas, 46 Edward III, and afterwards took her thence. Agnes, John’s wife, died at Middelton by Baynton on Saturday before St. Margaret, 43 Edward III.
All the lands and rents in the counties of York and Lincoln lately held by John Sourdevale, grandfather of the deceased, were entailed on him and Sibyl his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. Their issue was Amandus their son and heir; his was John, the subject of this inquisition; and his was the said Agnes, who is a minor.

279. JOHN THOLOUSE.

LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 10 November, 47 Edward III.
Parish of All Hallows, Grascherche in Bisshopesgate ward. 2 messuages, a cellar, and a shop.
He made a sedition for which he was drawn and hanged in 21 Edward III. After the sedition he alienated the premises to William de Briklesworth and John his son, their heirs and assigns, subject to a right of re-entry on repayment of a loan of 40l. Seisin was delivered to William and John his son; but John Tholouse had possession of the premises and received the issues until his death. Immediately after his death the said John son of William entered thereon and received the issues until he enfeoffed Henry Pykard, citizen and vintner of London, of the premises. Henry held the premises all his life and died in 35 Edward III. After his death Margaret his wife had possession and received the issues until a third part of the premises was recovered against her in the husting of London of common pleas held on Monday after St. James, 45 Edward III, having been assigned as dower to Lettice formerly wife of John de Briklesworth. Lettice has had possession of this third part, with John Kyriel her husband, ever since the above assignment. Margaret still has possession of two-thirds of the premises.
John Tholouse has no heirs because he died the death aforesaid. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.

He died about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, 35 Edward III, day not known, seised of:—
Parish of St. Dionis in Langeborne ward. 2 shops, a principal messuage with 2 shops opposite, and a principal messuage with another messuage opposite.
Parish of St. Andrew Hubert in Billyngesgate ward. 2 messuages and 5 shops.
Parish of St. Botolph by Billyngesgate. 3 messuages with a cellar.
Parish of St. Mary atte Hull in Billyngesgate ward. A messuage and shop with a quay adjoining.
Immediately after his death Richard Double entered on all the premises, by what title the jurors know not; and before taking any profits thereof he enfeoffed Richard de Croydon, citizen and fishmonger of London, of those in the first three parishes. Richard de Croydon has held the premises in the first two parishes until now, and held those in the third parish until in 43 Edward III he enfeoffed Ralph Double, fishmonger of London, thereof without taking any profits because they were in bad condition and ruinous. Ralph still holds these, but has received no issues of them because they were in ruins until he built them anew. Richard Double enfeoffed John de Briklesworth and Lettice his wife of the premises in the parish of St. Mary atte Hull, and they had possession until John’s death in 42 Edward III, after which Lettice had possession until she took John Kyriel, knight, to husband, since when John and Lettice have had possession.
Parish of St. Mildred, [Bredstrete]. A messuage with 2 shops. The aforesaid Richard Double entered on these and enfeoffed Thomas atte Corner, who held them until his death, since when Ellen his wife has had possession of them.
The whole of the premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
The said Richard son of Richard has no heirs.
