363. JOHN SON OF JOHN INGE.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said John, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 1 December, 43 Edward III
GLOUCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Gloucester, 12 January, 43 Edward III.
La Lee. A messuage, a virgate of land and 40s. rent, held of the king in chief by service of keeping a certain bailiwick of forestership in La Lee in the forest of Mucheldene.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on the feast of St. Michael, 27 Edward III. Joan his daughter, who survives, aged 17 years and more, wife of Roger Dore, is his heir.
Richard Talbot of Richard’s Castle was in possession of all the premises and received the issues without title from the death of John son of John until 25 November last, when he died, and since then the king has been in possession by his escheator because Roger and Joan have not sued Joan’s right therein.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Horncastre, Saturday after St. Luke, 43 Edward III.
Castelcarleton. A third part of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, for term of her life, by endowment of George de Meriet, her late husband, of the inheritance of John de Meriet, knight.
She died on 3 July, 43 Edward III. John son of the aforesaid John de Meriet, knight, is her heir to the said third part, because John de Meriet, knight, son and heir of George de Meriet, her former husband, of whose inheritance she was dowered, died on Tuesday after Michaelmas, 43 Edward III, so that John his son, aged 23 years and more, is heir of Isabel and also of the said John son of George, both as to the third part which Isabel held in dower and also as to the two-thirds which John son of George, his father, held of his inheritance after the death of George; which two-thirds are similarly held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

He died on Tuesday before the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 43 Edward III. Agnes his daughter, aged 18 years and more, is his heir, and was married to Geoffrey de Elkyngton in the lifetime of her father.

WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Worcester, Saturday after St. Luke the Evangelist, 43 Edward III.
Quenehull. The manor, held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, by gift of John Baudery and Elizabeth his wife and Robert Underhull and Juetta his wife to Edward and Joan and the heirs of Edward. It is held of the king in chief by service of rendering a hound (unum canem de mut’) yearly at the Exchequer at Michaelmas.
He died on Sunday the morrow of Michaelmas last. Paulinus, son of Edward and Joan, aged 20 years, is his heir.

Walton Kerdyf. The manor (extent given), held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of Sir Ralph, earl of Stafford, by knight’s service, by gift of Henry Impyngham of Teukes[bury], ‘parker,’ Thomas Gestok, John Baudrypp and Elizabeth his wife, and Robert Underhulle and Juetta his wife, by a fine levied in the king’s court.

367. ROGER SON OF GILBERT DE LANCASTRE.
Writ to the escheator to enquire what lands &c. the said Roger held of the king in chief, as of the knights’ fees late of William de Coucy, deceased, which were lately in the king’s hands, and what of others, and who is his heir, and who has been in possession of the said lands since his death and received the issues. 26 January, 43 Edward III.
WESTMORLAND. Inq. taken at Kirkeby in Kendal, Saturday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 43 Edward III.
Banandesdale. Two-thirds of a pasture there, held of the fees of William de Couucy, as of the manor of Kirkeby in Kendale, by service of rendering 3s. yearly to the said William; and a moiety of Banandesdale, held of Thomas de Roos of Kendale, knight, by service of rendering a sore sparrowhawk or 12d. yearly at St. Peter’s Chains.
Stirkeland Randolph. The manor, held of the said Thomas de Roos by service of 26s. 2 1/2d. yearly.
Sokbred. A moiety of the manor, held of the same Thomas by service of 2s. yearly.
Skelmeser’. Two messuages and 40a. land, held of Roger de Leyburn by service of rendering 18d. yearly.
Fayrbank in Stirkeland Ketill. Three messuages, held of Robert de Belyngham by service of 6d. yearly.
The king has received 33s. 4d. yearly from the said two-thirds in Banandesdale by the hands of the escheator since Roger died, which he ought not to have received, as is supposed. Margaret late the wife of Roger, now deceased, received the whole profit and rent of all the other lands &c. of which Roger died seised for the space of 12 years; and since her death, to wit, for the space of 3 years, Christopher de Lancastre has been in possession of all the said lands &c. except the two-thirds of the pasture in Banandesdale (of which the king has received the profit) and the moiety of Banandesdale (of which Thomas de Roos has been in possession since Margaret’s death).
Roger held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick.
He died on Thursday before Michaelmas, 26 Edward III. Joan wife of William le Taillour, aged 30 years, is his heir.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Ideshale, 24 February, 44 Edward III.
Bridwik and Castel in Ideshale manor. A third part of a messuage, of a garden, of 2 carucates of land, of 4a. meadow, of a several pasture, of a plot of land called ‘Stonton,’ of a several wood, and of 6s. rent of free tenants, held in dower of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Le Wodehous in Ideshale fee. A plot of land so called, held as above.
The reversion of all the premises after Joan’s death belongs to the right heirs of Thomas Leversete.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 21 September last. Eleanor wife of John Olyver, aged 20 years and more, and Isolda wife of William son of William Russell, aged 16 years and more, sisters of Thomas son of Thomas Leversete, are next heirs to the premises.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Carlisle, Saturday after Christmas, 43 Edward III.
Westlevyngton. The hamlet (extent given), held of the king in chief by cornage, rendering at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff 13s. at the Assumption. The extent includes a chief messuage, 24a. land and meadow in demesne under the plough (in arrura), and about 140a. land in demesne which are worth nothing because they lie in the moor upon the march and are uncultivated.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Sunday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. John de Levyngton, his brother, of full age, to wit, 24 years and more, is his heir.

Strete. Two-thirds of the manor. He made a charter of feoffment thereof in fee simple to Richard de Eldehalgate and John Frenshe, the younger, without the king’s licence, but he was always in seisin and never out of possession, and received the issues until his death. The two-thirds are held of the king in chief by knight’s service and the service of rendering 10s. yearly for ward of the castle of Dover.
He died on Thursday in the first week of Lent last. John de Leyham, his son, aged half a year, is his heir.

HUNTINGDON. Inq. taken at Huntingdon, Saturday the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 43 Edward III.
Southo, Bouton, and Overton Watervill. A messuage, a carucate of land, and 10l. rent, held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, of the king in chief, to them and the heirs of Edward, as appears by feoffments and a charter of licence of the king; services not known.
St. Neots. A messuage, held jointly, as above, of the prior of St. Neots, services not known.
Eynesbury. A messuage and 16a. land, held jointly with Joan his wife of John la Souche, services not known.

373. JOHN DE LISLE, or LYSLE, of Gatecombe.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Southampton, 19 September, 43 Edward III.
Hulseye. A croft containing 4a., held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as of the castle of Porcestre.
ISLE OF WIGHT. Whytewell. The manor, held of the lord of the castle of Caresbrok by knight’s service.
Arreton. A toft and 20a. land called ‘Swelyeng,’ held of the lord of the manor of Gatecombe, service not known.
Westbrok. 20s. rent, held of the lord of the castle of Caresbrok by knight’s service.
Gatecombe. Long before his death he enfeoffed Geoffrey Roucle, John Bysshopeston, Walter de Burton and Robert Seman of the manor of Gatecombe and the advowson of the church, on condition that they should re-enfeoff him and Alesia his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. Immediately afterwards he re-entered on the manor and advowson and received the issues, notwithstanding the alienation aforesaid. After the said re-entry he gave by charter a cottage and 4a. land, parcel of the manor, which came into his hands after the death of William Burgh, to Richard Clerk for life, at a rent of a rose yearly, with reversion to himself and his heirs; and also granted by charter a messuage and 10a. land, parcel of the same manor, which came into his hands by the death of John Wodhous, clerk, to John Marchal for life, at a like rent. Afterwards the said Alesia died, one day before the said John de Lysle, for which reason the said condition could not have effect. The manor is held of the lord of the castle of Caresbrok by knight’s service.
Cawelbourne and Haldelee. On the day of his death he granted the said manors to William de Lysle and Bartholomew de Donnyngesworth, vicar of Shorewell, on condition that they should grant the same to John Sperlyng and the heirs of his body for ever, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John de Lysle. William and Bartholomew never had seisin of the manor of Haldelee by virtue of this feoffment. The manor of Cawelbourne is held of the lord of the castle of Caresbrok by knight’s service; and the manor of Haldelee is held of Theobald de Gorges by a rent of 1lb. of cummin, and it is worth 13s. 4d. a year and no more because there is no messuage in the manor, but only 40a. land.
He died on 3 September last. Elizabeth his sister, aged 24 years and more and married to John de Brambeshute, is his heir.

Deen. The manor (extent given), held as parcel of the manor of Cokirmouth. The extent includes a hamlet called Ullayk (extent given).
Whynfell. Divers tenements with demesne lands in the hands of tenants at will rendering 41s. yearly; and a moiety of a watermill.

Allerdall. The reversion of a free farm from certain tenements of Allerdall called ‘Sewak,’ to wit, 56s. 3d., of which farm the aforesaid Joan wife of Anthony is dowered for life.
Caldebek and Ufdall. The reversion of the manors, which are parcel of the manor of Aspatrik, and of 8 husband-lands in Aspatrik, whereof Euphemia sometime the wife of Reynold son of Thomas de Lucy is enfeoffed for life.
Wigeton. The manor, with its members (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes certain forelands rendering 7l. 13s. 5d. yearly, new assarts lately improved rendering 8l. 13d. yearly, 10s. rent of the measures of the town, and the following:—

Egermont. The reversion of a third part of the manor with its members (extent given), which are held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. Joan late the wife of Anthony de Lucy, mother of the deceased, is dowered of the said third part. The extent includes demesne lands at Culdreton and Egermont, a park, free tenants holding in burgage, free tenants holding at will a third part of the toll of the lordship of Egermont, an office called ‘landsergeant,’ and the following:—

Deen and Kirkebrid. The advowsons of the churches.
Brigham. The advowson of the chantry of the chapel of St. Mary.
Ulvedall. The reversion of the advowson of the church, together with the advowson of a third part of St. Bees with its temporalities.
Calder. The reversion of a third part of the advowson of the abbey with its temporalities.
Joan late the wife of the said Anthony, mother of the deceased, is dowered of the said [advowsons held in reversion].
Wytele Spitel. The advowson of a decayed (debile) hospital so called, near Wigeton, founded for the support of lepers.
Moriceby. A yearly rent of 50s. from the manor.
Egermont. A rent of 8l. from the three lords parceners thereof.
The deceased held no other lands &c., fees or advowsons in the county.

Langele. The reversion of the manor and castle with the members (extent given), of which Joan late the wife of Anthony de Lucy, mother of the deceased, is dowered for life. The said manor with its members is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee as parcel of a barony. The extent includes a park, a fulling-mill, and the following:—
Haydenbrig. Tenants in burgage rendering 40s. 9d. yearly.
Harlawe, Leghes, Ligthbirkes and Harsendon. Four hamlets so called, in the hands of tenants at will rendering 10l. yearly.
Hayden. Tenants at will rendering 101s. yearly.
Lippewod and Ratunrawe. Two hamlets so called, in the hands of tenants at will rendering 8 marks 3s. 4d. yearly.
Hayden. Demesne lands in the hands of tenants at will rendering 10 marks 2s. yearly.
Allerwassh. A town so called (extent given, including a hamlet called Allerwassh).
Fourstanes. A town so called (extent given, including a fullingmill).
Warden. A town so called, with tenants at will rendering 56s. 4d. yearly.
The undermentioned fees pertain to the manor and castle of Langele:—
Blenkeneshop. The manor, held by Thomas de Blenkaneshop by fealty and service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly.
Fetherstanhalgh. The manor, held by the heir of Alexander de Fetherstanhalgh by homage and fealty and service of rendering 20s. 7d. yearly, and by suit of court three times a year.
Whytwhamme. A hamlet so called, held by Thomas son of Peter de Fethirstanhalgh by homage and fealty and suit of court every three weeks, and by service of rendering 3s. 4d. yearly.
Chesterwode. A hamlet so called, held by Nicholas de Grendon by fealty and suit of court every three weeks, and by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly.
Le Whitechapell. Held by the same Nicholas by service of rendering 10s. yearly.
Morele. A hamlet so called, held by John de Stryvelyn by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by service of rendering 11s. yearly.
Langele. A tenement in the town, held by William de Tadcastell by homage and fealty and service of rendering 20d. yearly, and by suit of court as above.
Le Nakedele. Held by Adam de Nakedele by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Langele. Two crofts, held by William le Parker by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by rendering 10d. yearly; and a tenement, held by Richard Robertson by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Threpewod. Held by the prior of St. John of Jerusalem by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Ulmers. A plot so called, held by the prior and convent of Hexham by fealty and service of rendering 3s. yearly, and by suit of court three times a year.
Le Hughfeld. Held by William de (sic) Chapman by fealty and suit of court, and by rendering 1d. yearly.
Lipwod. A tenement, held by Agnes Chapman by homage and fealty and suit of court every three weeks, and by rendering 20d. yearly.
Hayden. A tenement, held by William son of John Chapman by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by rendering 15s. yearly; and a messuage and 2a. land, held by Alice de Holnycroke by service of 1d. yearly.
Sadlyngstanes and Ulmers. Held by the heir of Hugh de Sadlyngstanes by homage and fealty and suit of court as above, and by service of rendering 8s. yearly.
Lideldenesse. Held by Roger de Wydryngton by fealty and service of rendering 5s. yearly.
The said Joan was not seised of any other manors, lands, fees or advowsons in the county.
