YORK. He was born at Burton Annays, and baptized in the parish church there, 7 June, 13 Edw. IV, Robert then Prior of Bridlington, Robert Constable knt., and Marjory then wife of William Euere, knt., being gossips. His lands of inheritance were in the custody of Maud, widow and executrix of John Ferrers, knt., who had the same of the grant of the said King Edward IV.

John, Lord de Dudley, and John Bryngham, knt., gave the under-mentioned mill, lands, and rent to him the said Rhys Gryffith, for the term of his life, with remainder to Walter Griffith, knt., his brother. The said Walter died 9 Aug., 21 Edw. IV, leaving issue Walter Griffith his son and heir, 21 years old and more on 8 June inst., to whom the premises remain.
The said Rhys died 8 Oct., 4 Hen. VII. Joan the wife of Leo Dymok, aged 22 and more, is his daughter and heir.

The said William Brounyng, late of Melbury Sampford, esq., by his deed dated 20 Dec., 7 Hen. VII, gave the under-mentioned manors, &c., to John Parker, clk., William Abbot, clk., and Richard Bere, who at his special request demised them, by deed dated 24 Dec. the same year, to him and Katharine his wife, who survives, and his heirs and assigns. The said Katharine is with child, which issue, when God shall have given it birth, will be heir to the said William.
He died 29 August last. William Brounyng, aged 30, son of Alexander Brounyng his brother, is his cousin and next heir.

959 HUMPHREY TALBOT, knt.
Writ 1 March, inq. 2 Aug., 9 Hen. VII.
By fine levied on the morrow of the Ascension, 15 Edw. IV, Thomas Bothe and Richard Stevenson gave the under-mentioned manor, whereof they were seised in fee and fee tail respectively, to the said Humphrey, for the term of his life, with remainder to Edward, Viscount Lysle, and Elizabeth his wife, and her heirs. Afterwards by deed dated 18 May the same year, the said Humphrey gave the said Edward and Elizabeth all advowsons of churches, chapels, and chantries, belonging to the said manor and all rents and services, other than yearly ones, parcel thereof, to hold during the term of his life.
He survived the said Edward and Elizabeth and died 3 Dec. last, when the premises remained to John Grey, aged 13 and more, as son and heir of the said Elizabeth.

He enfeoffed Robert Markham, knt., Gervase Clyfton, Thomas Fitzwilliam, Thomas Molyneux, Robert Molyneux, John Leek, and Ralph Stanhope, clk., of the under-mentioned manors of Rampton, &c., to the intent that after his death they should make a sufficient estate thereof in law to Edward Stanhope, his cousin and heir apparent, in tail.
One Walter, vicar of the church of Laxton, gave the under-mentioned manor of Hoghton, and lands in Elkesley and Allerton, to one Thomas Languillers for the term of his life, with remainder to John his son in tail, with remainder in default to Thomas’ right heirs. On the death of Thomas the premises remained to the said John Languillers, and descended on his death to Elizabeth his daughter and heir. She took to husband one Richard Stanhope and had issue Richard Stanhope, esq., to whom on her death the premises descended, as her son and heir. After the death of the said Richard the son the said manor and lands descended to the said John Stanhope as his son and heir, and cousin and heir of the said John Languillers, viz. son of Richard, son of Elizabeth, daughter and heir of the said John. At the death of the said John Stanhope the said premises descended to Edward Stanhope his cousin and heir.
He died 12 Dec., 9 Hen. VII, seised of the other under-mentioned lands in Willoughby, Kyrton, &c., in fee. The said Edward Stanhope, aged 24 and more, is his cousin and heir, viz. son of Thomas his son and heir.

Writ 4 Feb., inq. the last day but one of May, 10 Hen. VII.
He died the last day but one of January last, seised of the under-mentioned castle, manor, lands, &c., worth 20 marks by the year, which, he held of the King, by service of 1/4 of a knight’s fee. George Tailboys, esq., aged 28 and more, is his son and heir.
N’TH’L’D. The castle of Herbotell, which is worth nothing yearly.
Manor of Oterburn: on the site of it are a hall, three chambers, a chapel, three stables, a kitchen, and a buttery, in a tower parcel of the castle and manor aforesaid, of no yearly value. Likewise in the said manor there are 200 messuages which are in the march of Scotland, and 200 tofts likewise in the march of Scotland, worth nothing yearly, because no profit can be taken therefrom on account of the Scots and others of Scotland dwelling near the said messuages and tofts in Scotland.
There are in the said manor 2,000a. meadow, worth 1d. an acre; 20 cottages, worth 3d. each; 1,000a. arable in the march of Scotland, worth 6s.; 300a. wood likewise in the march, worth 6s.; 1,000a. (or 2,000a.) meadow, worth 40s.; divers pastures, one called ‘Redeshed,’ containing 200a., another called ‘Lomesdon,’ containing 500a., another called ‘le Rampeshop,’ containing 500a., another called ‘Spythop,’ containing 1,000a., another called ‘Cotenshop,’ containing 1,000a., another called ‘Akynsyd,’ containing 300a., another called ‘Byrdhop,’ containing 2,000a., another called ‘Thillez,’ containing 2,000a., another called ‘Kellyburn,’ containing 5,000a another called ‘Gylsyde,’ containing 3,000a., two other pastures lying together called ‘Chetelhop’ and ‘Baythamhop,’ containing 5,000a., and three other pastures called ‘Redles,’ ‘Wyllyward,’ and ‘Wharlemore,’ containing 6,000a.; and also there is there another pasture called ‘Dulez,’ containing 500a.; all which pastures aforesaid are in the march of Scotland and are worth clear yearly 20s.
There are in the said manor divers free tenants, holding their tenements there of the lord of the said manor within the march in the kingdom of England near the Scots, who were wont anciently to pay 40s. 8 1/2d. at the terms of St. Cuthbert in Lent and St. Cuthbert in Autumn equally, 9 lb. pepper and 9 lb. cummin, but in time of war between England and the Scots they shall pay no rent, or anything else, but give their help together with their lord there to keep the vale, or valley, of Reddesdale and those who dwell there from plunderers, enemies, and robbers.
To the said manor belongs the advowson of the church of Ellesden, worth 20 marks anciently, and the patronage of the abbey of nuns of Halistane, whose temporalities in time of peace are worth 10l. yearly.
All the lands and tenements which are within the bounds of the said castle and manor are said to be and are within the liberty of Riddisdale.
The said Robert moreover held to him and his heirs by reason of the said manor (1) view of frank pledge of all tenants of the said manor, and of residents within the precinct of the said castle and manor, at the said manor twice a year, once after Easter and again after Michaelmas, (2) court baron within the said manor every three weeks, (3) another court called ‘Forster Court’ twice a year, and (4) from time out of mind tumbrel, pillory, assise of bread and beer, waifs and strays, and all that belongs to view of frank pledge and court baron, (5) a fair at Herbotell within Ridesdale on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin yearly, with court of piepowder, and (6) a market on Tuesdays weekly there, (7) another fair at Ellesden within Riddesdale on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin with court of piepowder while it lasts, and (8) a market there on Sundays weekly, with tolls and customs and the other advantages of such fairs and markets, (9) cognisance of all pleas within the bounds of Riddesdale or the precinct of the said castle and manor before the steward of the said manor at the said manor, (10) goods of felons, &c., (11) a gaol at the said castle to be kept by his officers, (12) the appointment of justices of the peace of labourers and artificers, and for gaol delivery within the said bounds and precinct, (13) return of writs and the execution of them, (14) the appointment of bailiffs and officers for the execution of whatever pertains to the offices of Sheriff and Coroner within the said limits.

He was seised of the manors of Ermyngton and Bykford Walles, together with the Tremur court of Modebury (cum curia Tremura de Modebury), and of the free chapel of St. Mary, Ermyngton, within the churchyard of Ermyngton parish church, and of the office of bailiff of the hundred of Ermyngton in fee, and being so seised, by deed dated Wednesday after the feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, 4 Hen. VII, he gave to William Fortescu, esq., who survives, the office of chief steward of the manor of Ermyngton, and the offices of bailiff and receiver of all other his manors, lands, and tenements in the counties of Devon and Cornwall, for the term of his life, with a yearly fee of 3l.
By deed dated 14 Nov., 7 Hen. Edmund Shaa, knt., late her husband, being seised of the under-mentioned manors of Horndon House and Arden Hall, enfeoffed John Shaa, Thomas Woode, and others, thereof in fee to the use of his last will. By their permission and in accordance with the said will she occupied and took the issues and profits of the said manors during her life.
The said Edmund and John Shaa, Thomas Woode, and other his co-feoffees, being seised of the under-mentioned lands in Tyllyngham and Daunsey, Westley and Langdon, Wokyngdon, Bulvan, and Mokkyng in fee, they survived him and continue seised of the premises to the use of his last will, which was, that if the said Julian his wife kept single and accepted as her full share according to the custom of London the portion of his goods bequeathed to her by his will, that then the feoffees of such lands as he had bought in fee simple should continue enfeoffed thereof to her use for life, with remainder on her death, or in case she disturbed his executors in respect of his goods, to Hugh his son, as touching the manors of Horndon House and Arden Hall, in tail male, with remainder to John Shaa his cousin in tail male, with remainder to his, the testator’s, right heirs. In accordance with the said will and by the permission of the said feoffees she occupied all the said lands, &c., during her life and took the issues and profits thereof.
Thomas Sager and Agnes his wife, late wife of Thomas Fraunces, and daughter and sole heir of William Grene late of Tyllyngham, acknowledged a fine to the said Edmund and John Shaa and the heirs of Edmund of the under-mentioned land, marsh, and weir in Tyllyngham. Of this also the said Julian was in possession during her life, and took the issues and profits, by the terms of her husband’s will and by permission of the said John Shaa, who, after the death of the said Edmund was solely seised thereof in his demesne as of frank tenement with reversion to Hugh Shaa as son and heir of the said Edmund, and, after the death of the said Hugh issueless, with reversion to Margaret now wife of Thomas Riche, and Katharine now wife of William Broun, both of London, mercers, as sisters and heirs of the said Hugh.
She died 6 July last. The said Margaret Riche, aged 22 and more, and Katharine Broun, aged 20 and more, are her daughters and heirs. Cf. No. 381.

Whereas by an inquisition (No. 259) taken before Henry Rake, escheator, it was found that the said Walter died seised of the manor of Paunesfote Hill, and of 300a. arable, 200a. pasture, &c., but it is not specified in the said inquisition of what estate in the premises the said Walter was seised, nor in what town the said 300a., &c., were situate, now it is found that the said Walter died 22 Aug., 2 Hen. VII, seised of the said premises in fee, and that the said 300a. arable, &c., are in Romsey.

Thomas Hot, John Melett, John Jerdevyle of Newport, Richard Shymmyng, William Middelton, John Chalke of Walden, William Totenham, and Thomas Marton, were seised in fee of the under-mentioned messuage, lands, and tenements, called ‘Bolys’ in Newport, &c., and of lands there formerly belonging to John Bradgore (with the exception of 7a. 1r. arable there, formerly in the occupation of John Rede, late of Newport), to the use of Agnes, late wife of John Say, knt., and previously wife of John Fray, knt., and her heirs, and to the use of her will. And the said Agnes by her last will directed her said feoffees to enefoff the said Elizabeth thereof in tail. After the death of the said Agnes the said feoffees were seised of the premises in fee to the use of the said Elizabeth and the heirs of her body, and suffered William Say, knt., and the said Elizabeth his wife, to occupy the same, and take the issues and profits thereof all her lifetime:
John Fray, knt., was seised of the manors of Great and Little Wenden in fee, and being so seised enfeoffed Richard Davers, esq., and others thereof to the use of himself and his heirs, and to the use of his will. By his last will he gave the said manors to the said Agnes his wife for the term of her life, with remainder to the said Elizabeth in tail. The said Agnes survived the said John, and entered into the said manors, and took the profits thereof, with the consent of the said Richard, and after her death, the said William Say, knt., and Elizabeth his wife, with the consent of the said Richard Davers, and his co-feoffees, entered thereon, and took the profits thereof all the lifetime of the said Elizabeth.
She died 16 April last. William Walgrave, esq., aged 30 and more, is her son and heir.
ESSEX. A messuage, lands, and tenements called ‘Boles’ in Newport, Great Wenden, and Little Wenden, worth 40s., held of the manor of Great Wenden, service unknown.

Writ de Amotus wanting, inq. the last day of June, 10 Hen. VII.
John Cheyne, knt., John Hevenyngham, knt., John Sapcote, Guy Wullston, and Geoffrey Blodwell, esqs., being seised of the under-mentioned manor called ‘Argenteinis’ in fee, to the use of the said William and his heirs, by their deed dated … [May], 19 Edw. IV, gave a yearly rent of 23 marks thereout to the said William and Elizabeth his wife by the names of William Alyngton, esq., son and heir of ……, and Elizabeth daughter of Henry Wentworth, esq., his wife, to them and the heirs of the body of the said William.
The said John Cheyne and the others being similarly seised inter alia of the other under-mentioned manors in fee, to the use of the said William and his heirs, they demised them, together with the said manor called ‘Argenteins,’ by deed dated the last day of January, 22 Edw. IV, to the said William, his executors and assigns, from Christmas then last for the term 60 years at the rent of a red rose. By his last will the said William appointed the said Elizabeth, who survives, and one Ralph Hyde, clk., now deceased, his executors, and died 22 Aug., 1 Hen. VII. Thereupon the said Elizabeth became solely seised in her demesne as of frank tenement of the said rent, and entered as executrix on the demised manors. And afterwards the said Ralph, her co-executor died, and she took to husband one William Cheyne, esq., and they are seised, as above, of the premises in her right. Giles Alyngton, aged 12 and more, is his son and heir.
CAMB. Manor called ‘Argenteins’ in Melburn and Melreth, worth together with the said rent 17l., held of the Bishop of Ely, by service of one knight’s fee.

995 ANNE, late the wife of GILES WILLESBORNE, esq.

The said Giles Wellesburn and Anne his wife being seised of the under-mentioned manors in fee in her right suffered a recovery thereof to William Danvers one of the justices of the common pleas, John Verney, knt., and Thomas Gate, to the use of themselves and her heirs.
After the death of the said Giles she in her widowhood in consideration of a marriage had between one Humphrey Wellesburne, gent., and Margery her daughter and heir apparent, and of certain sums of money paid beforehand by the said Humphrey, and in consideration that he had paid and undertaken to pay divers of her debts and of the debts of John Harecourte, esq., and of the said Giles her late husbands, willed and declared by her writing indented dated 18 Jan., 9 Hen. VII, enrolled in the King’s Bench, that the said Humphrey should take the issues and profits of the said manors yearly during her life, viz. 20 marks for the maintenance of herself and her maid after that rate while she continued to make one of his household, and the residue for the purposes specified in the said indenture, but if she preferred to withdraw from his household and reside at her own charges elsewhere he was to pay her 20 marks half yearly.
And whereas a feigned and crafty contract was alleged by one John Russheton between himself and the said Margery, she willed that if the marriage between the said Humphrey and Margery should hereafter be voided, or annulled, at the suit of the said John, the said Humphrey should continue to hold the said manors for the term of his life subject to certain payments, with remainder should the said John and Margery have meanwhile been married to the heirs of the body of John Chalers, knt., other than the said Margery, namely to such persons as would in the event of her, the said Margery’s, death without issue have inherited them, with the like remainder to Sir John’s right heirs: failing such divorce she willed that the said Humphrey and Margery should enjoy the said manors with remainder to their issue male, with remainder to the heirs of the body of Sir John Chalers, with remainder to Margery’s right heirs: provision was also made for the payment of the specified debts in case of the said Humphey’s decease within eight years then next and in the lifetime of her, or the said Margery.
She died 10 March, 9 Hen. VII. The said Margery wife of the said Humphrey, aged 18 and more, is her daughter and heir.

996 ALEXANDER CLYFFORD.
Writ wanting; inq. 30 Oct., 10 Hen. VII.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Shorne in fee, and being so seised on Thursday after the octave of the Epiphany, 30 Hen. VI, enfeoffed John Lukenore, Richard Lukenore, John Culppeper, Richard Waller, Nicholas Sybyll, John Brenchesle, Thomas Roger, Thomas Norton, Morgan Walker, chaplain, and Sampson Style of Middelton, now deceased, and Richard Culpepyr, who survives, thereof, to the use of himself and his heirs and of his last will. The said Richard Culpepyr the surviving feoffee received the King’s pardon for acquiring the said manor, by letters patent dated 8 October last.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Sutton Valence in fee and being so seised by deed dated 20 July, 13 Edw. IV, having previously obtained licence of alienation from the King as appears by letters patent dated 6 July the same year enfeoffed William Haute, knt., Nicholas Gaynesford, esq., William Crowmer the younger, gent., William Brent, and John Nethersole, who survive, and John Gaynesford, esq., John Roper, esq., Robert Martyn, esq., Roger Brent, John Hart, Thomas Wade, and Stephen Feltwell, now deceased, thereof, an acre of land called ‘Chart Chirchcroft’ then parcel thereof excepted, to the same use as above. He died seised of the said excepted acre in fee.
By deed dated 26 Jan., 5 Hen. VII, Richard Culpepir, esq., being seised of the under-mentioned manor of Traseis in fee and having obtained licence of alienation from the King by letters patent dated 28 Dec. the same year enfeoffed Henry Horne, esq., Mildred Evias, William Warner, esq., John Borne, and John Anger, gent., thereof, an acre of land excepted, to hold during the life and to the use of the said Mildred, who survives, with remainder to Reginald Sondes, John Culpepir, and John Sampson, now deceased, and Nicholas Culpepir, William Brent, John Nethersole, Walter Culpeper, and John Herynden, who survive, to the use of the said Alexander and his heirs and of his last will.
By his last will dated 3 Sept. last he directed the feoffees of his manor of Shorne to give the said Millicent now wife of Lewis Clifford a rent-charge of 10 marks to be received yearly by her and her assigns out of the said manor and afterwards to make an estate of the said manor to the said Lewis in tail male, with remainder to the heirs male of his own body, with remainder to his own right heirs; he likewise directed the feoffees of his manor of Sutton Valence to permit his executors to take the profits thereof for the expenses of his funeral, of his month’s mind, of his anniversary, of the probate of his will, and for the payment of his debts and legacies: further he willed that, after the death of the said Mildred, the said Lewis should have an estate of the manor of Traseis in tail male.
He died 10 Sept. last. The said Lewis Clyfford, aged 41, is his son and heir at common law, and the said Lewis, Christopher Clyfford, aged 39 and more, Humphrey Clyfford, aged 37 and more, Sampson Clyfford, aged 30 and more, Thomas Clyfford, aged 23 and more, and Richard Clyfford, aged 21 and more, are his sons and coheirs according to the ancient custom of the County of Kent of whatever lands he held in gavilkynde being divisible between the heirs male.
